Just a heads up gang - I'm slammed operationally with work at the moment. Have leave booked for Friday but time will likely be sparse before then. Please bot me as required.
Ukufa
Work bug continues to bite folks - have bunch of After Action Review content to prep, ongoing jobs offshore and a technical response to an Non Conformance Report to prepare this week...
As such, time and creative energy will be on the low ebb for the foreseeable, so if Ukufa can be botted during this time that would be appreciated.

Hey folks,
I've had a player reach out to me inquiring about joining this game. They're super active on the boards and seem keen, so I'm inclined to bring them aboard, but I just wanted to run it past you all first, since we weren't actively recruiting. The player is noral if you've gamed with them before.
In any case, PM me with any concerns, but if I don't hear anything, we'll probably be finding a prisoner/survivor in this pirate base shortly.

Dear all, thanks so much for welcoming me to your group!
I am really looking forward to playing with you all.
GM Fanguar was so kind to inform me that you are in need of an arcane caster so I will start fleshing out a couple of options to present those to you.
Thanks again and I wish you all a great weekend! ;-)

Hi GM,
I am currently evaluating character options and saw in your recruiting post that ratfolk would be allowed.
I was just wondering where they fit in as I could not find any reference to a ratfolk community in the background to the city districts that you provided. ;-)
Would be interested to create a ratfolk but would like to have background that aligns with the current campaign. :-)

I just happen to like rat folk, call it a warhammer bias, but there is no particular details about them in the city. The campaign is 3.5 D&D and ratfolk aren't a D&D race, so there's not going to be any specific details to them. As Sassarine is a large port city, any and all races are going to be represented in the population, but whether or not there is a full blown ratfolk community? Probably not. As such, your character could realistic be from any of the districts.

Okay thanks! That actually sounds like more freedom to create a customized background. ;-)
I really like the idea of a ratfolk tinkerer so I’m thinking alchemist which gives arcane options.
What do you guys think about that?
Bhru Angraddson
i think i briefly played a ratfolk alchemist, it was fun and destructive.. was a few different ways to go (i think i went explosives)..
they might not be IN Sassarine, but they could be UNDER Sassarine.....
Troy Gol
Great idea! I’ll include a small cell of ratfolk under Sassarine in the background if there are no objections. Maybe Troy is one of the first that dared to venture into the life of the surface dwellers? :-)
In terms of mechanics of the character I was thinking about an alchemist with the Dimensional Excavator, Grenadier, and Toxicant archetypes which all stack because they alter different aspects of the alchemist.
I’m open for any suggestions or different ideas of course!!

Welcome Noral/Troy!
Also... Hoooomg. I think I messed up the map, was trying to zoom on the phone and things went drastically sideways. Sorry GMF!
Troy Gol
Thanks a lot Kellan for the warm welcome!
Hello GM, is the character idea ok? I am also thinking about a half-elf unchained summoner as an alternative option. Would that be better in your opinion?
I also checked the recruitment post and saw char gen rules. Here my stats:
2d7 + 4 ⇒ (6, 5) + 4 = 15
2d7 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2) + 4 = 7
2d7 + 4 ⇒ (5, 3) + 4 = 12
2d7 + 4 ⇒ (7, 6) + 4 = 17
2d7 + 4 ⇒ (5, 4) + 4 = 13
2d7 + 4 ⇒ (2, 3) + 4 = 9
Happy thanksgiving and have a great weekend everyone!

Hey everyone, so I am throwing character ideas up and down.
I really would like to have your opinion of what fits best into the group. I saw that you need arcane support but potentially also ranged options so these three ideas are in my mind with very different character concepts:
1. Ratfolk alchemist that has been living beneath the earth in a very small community that is relatively near to Sassarine and that chose years ago to venture up into the world above and is now living in Shadowshore.
(Mechanics are mainly ranged bombs and buffing companions via infusions & potions).
2. Half-Elf unchained summoner from a Sassarine minor noble family that has been involuntarily bonded with a fallen Azata - when the outsider died because of her transgressions, her soul did not pass properly to the afterlife but became a servant spirit to the half-elf.
(Mechanics Half-Elf is primarily buffing the group or debuffing enemies and the Azata Eidolon is a ranged combatant).
3. Elven Magus that has arrived a couple of years ago in Sassarine and serves the Lidu family in the Noble's district as a bodyguard but is currently looking for new opportunities to venture into the unknown.
(Mechanics will be an archer Magus so that you have ranged and arcane offensive support).
What do you think?
Kellan Ved
Yea, ditto on one and three. Bombs sound cool and GMF does seem to have a spot for ratfolk but at the same time we haven't really seen any others. Kellan has kind of morphed from my original plan into divine controller and Stealth, with a side of archery until the casting really turns up, so definitely happy to have a back line buddy. Blasting and/or buffing with some archery or bombs sounds dope, I don't really know where the AP takes us tbh, so your call ultimately on core race vs potentially an outsider?
Troy Gol
Okay thanks for your feedback! That seems like a bunch of votes for the ratfolk. ;-)
I will sketch out the background and the crunch in the next days and post here.
Have a great week everyone!! :-D

Hello GM and fellow players, Troy is now ready for action! Short background and character sheet are now in his profile.
In case something is not clear then please tell me!
Thanks

Mechanically, the character seems fine at first pass. If you want to come up with a reason you were either captured by pirates or working for the pirates, the party could find you in this dungeon. Otherwise, we'll have to wait to get back to town before we can bring you onboard.

Thanks GM! Super sorry! I had actually wrote a more detailed background but obviously not pasted that in the char sheet and did not notice because of the spoiler.
Troy is a Ratfolk that has been living beneath the earth in a very small ratfolk community that is relatively near to Sassarine. Many years ago, curious as Troy is, he chose to venture up into the world above and eventually arrived in Sassarine where he first lived a life on the dark side of Shadowshore - this small area with its notorious businesses near Champion’s District was the perfect haven for Troy to hide among the poor that make their home here but even the miscreant inhabitants had to get used to the rare sight of a ratfolk.
Among the thieves, thugs, and criminals of the Shadowshore district the often too bold Troy was able to quickly make a name for himself as a strange little newcomer that had some skill in picking locks, stripping people of their belongings and brewing the strangest alchemical reagents. This reputation allowed Troy, who is not really the bravest soul, to at least pay the local gangs in services so that they allowed him to stay without being forced to kill someone in order to survive. It was in this time that Troy was so afraid of getting attacked that he developed a unique poison that he ingested daily and which allowed him to fend off those thugs that wanted more than just his services because even touching Troy became dangerous.
During one of Troy `s alchemical experiments, unfortunately, the destructive force of Troy’s bombs misfired and thus attracted the attention of the city watch and could have easily led to Troy’s arrest. It was mere luck that the person that Troy was showcasing his bombs to was a scientifically interested minor noble, Corin Star, who was able to persuade the guards on duty to let Troy go with a warning. Corin Star`s parents had died when he was young and he was the last heir to his family. Corin immediately saw Troy`s raw talent as an alchemist as a chance to have a sparring partner to further his own research and thus invited Troy into his service.
Troy until then only knew abuse and blackmail in Shadowshore and had no idea about politics and thus thought that corruption ran deep in the whole city - so when Corin asked him to attend the academies in the Noble district with him and even offered to pay his tuition, Troy could not believe his luck! Troy was at the beginning seen as Corin`s little pet but his intelligence convinced those that he interacted with of his talent - but there were still many nobles that were disgusted by Corin`s benevolence and just did not want a ratfolk in their midst. Nonetheless, together with Corin the little ratfolk attended the House of Dragons Acadamy, during which he was schooled in magical theory, planar lore, alchemy, linguistics and the history, nobility and politics of Sassarine.
Just as Troy really had accepted Corin as his one and only true friend, Corin was killed during a magical accident in the academy under dubious circumstances! Troy was absolutely devastated and tried to find out what exactly happened but the lack of funding and the many questions he asked led to Troy being flunked out by his academy superiors! Without the support of Troy`s noble patron, he had to start looking for real work which meant that he went to the one place he felt safe in Sassarine: the merchant district. Here Troy saw people from every race and fortunately a ratfolk was not so exceptional at a place where merchants from all over the world came to sell their wares. Troy had no other chance than to sleep on the streets at the beginning and although he tried to interview with businesses in the Merchant district that sold everything from potions to magic items, it was harder than expected to find a job.
It was during one of these cold nights on the streets when a small dart hit Troy`s neck during his sleep … the next thing he knew was that he was in chains in a small wooden cell and that it very much felt like he was on a ship! What the heck is going on!?!
Troy Gol
@UKFA: I realized that we both chose a feat from the Noble`s District. Would it be possible that our characters could have a little bit of a joint history? Maybe we met at the academy or an event or had a beer together once?
@KELLAN: As you also chose the Academy Graduate feat I think we definitely would know each other although we of course had very different specialties and probably did not have much interaction but as we both studied there it would make sense to have some idea of what we know about each other?
Kellan Ved
@Troy Perhaps a shared class on the nobility? Kellan, even then was charismatic enough but far from a social butterfly. Seems they both have a bit of an investigative/revenge streak post academy. I'm up for more than just knowing each other as the one ratfolk and the winking pensive if you'd like, not sure of a hook though. Could be the merchant district as he's the son of reasonably prosperous merchants if thats Troy spent time there prior as well...
Troy Gol
That sounds great.
Maybe we knew each other casually during the academy days and Troy was always impressed by Kellan’s natural presence!
I can rewrite the history so that the death of Troy’s friend was months ago and after that Troy tried to find a job in the merchant’s district and Kellan was so kind and helped Troy to find employment with one of the shop owners that Kellan knows. Kellan and Troy haven’t seen each other in months since then.
Troy being hit by a dart and falling unconscious could then have happened just recently on his way back from work.
Is that ok?
Kellan Ved
Works for me. Kellan has largely been dispossessed but could have had a run in or two out in the alleys while Kellan was doing his Punisher shtick, and a friendly shop keep from the "good times" likely wouldn't know the full story of his parents sordid connections.
I kind of got a bit of a wild creative writing hair up my ass when I wrote Kellans bio so it's a bit long but feel free to check it out at bottom of the char sheet.

Sorry for the radio silence gang - work had me burned out and since finishing for the holidays I've been decompressing and letting batteries recharge.
God Yule when it comes to one and all. Off to give the present of Xmas posts :)
@Troy: Ukufa's not the "sharing a beer" type, but she often carried out tasks for the Temple of Wee Jas as they needed. More than likely she's come across you when tempe and academy business intertwined. Likely that rarer components for rituals or Jasdian services could have been something you'd have been asked to prepare (and Ukufa entrusted to collect). Easily that they are known to each other, and have exchanged pleasantries more than once?

Happy New Year, folks!
@GMF: Mind clarifying how we should roll double dmg? I've checked a few spots online but can't seem to find a consensus. Many thanks!

Super sorry GM!! Yes, only 1 round and I was obviously completely brain confused because I was really thinking we’re level 4. :-D Sorry again.
