Hadn't thought of that, but it's a good idea especially with re-rolls.

The goblin AC is 14.

Just waiting on Morwen to post.

@Bergur - thanks for the clarification on sneak attack in 5e. I'd clocked that you didn't need Advantage, but wasn't sure whether the melee rule applied if you were shooting; it seems that it does. Nice. Is there no range limit (e.g. have to shoot from within 30 ft as in Pathfinder)?

Male Barding Treasure Hunter 1 | HP: 9/9 | AC 14 | Perception +4 | Initiative +3 | Insight +6 | Wis Save +2 | Con Save +1

Technically no. The exact wording, (from the Player's Guide):

"Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon. You don’t need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn’t incapacitated, and you don’t have disadvantage on the attack roll."

However practically there is a limit of 80 feet, as beyond that I would gain disadvantage on the attack roll due to a short bow's range increments.

Sorry guys! I had planned to make a post when I got to work this morning but work said no! Had a moment of calm so I got a post in, sorry it is small. Just want to keep it moving.

Scribe of Middle-Earth

No problem - there will always be days when I can't post, and days when I can post more than once.

Seriously! XD Poor guy is waaay off!

Yeah? YOU run fast as you can from a pack of orcs and see how long you can keep your intended course :P

The obvious answer is that he was driven here in a DM Fiat.

You're more likely to run into the mountain than around it if you're heading that way! XD

Why not just have him coming back from the Misty Mountains instead of the Blue Mountains?

Scribe of Middle-Earth

You'll find out.

Also! This is driving me bonkers! Are they orcs or are they goblins? Because in this world those are two different things! One would not use them interchangeably.

Scribe of Middle-Earth

They are orc-kind. Most of your PCs probably don't know the difference anyway.

Tolkien himself was vague about whether the goblins from Hobbit were the same or not as the orcs from LOTR - pretty sure he refers to "orcs from the Misty Mountains" at least once. And did Moria fall to orcs or goblins? When the party flees into Lorien following Gandalf's fight with the Balrog, they are pursued by what the elves refer to as orcs...

Also I should correct myself, in the elven language you can use orc and goblins interchangeably because they have the same root word. But! Both goblins and orcs do come from a similar form. Goblins are the lesser form, orcs are the like... beefed up form. You can tell the difference. For example the Goblins in Goblin town vs the Orcs like Azog and his group are like. And the Uruk-hai where bred from Orcs but they're not full orc, they're half-breeds. But we don't have to worry about them for a long time! In fact most of you all would be dead before we see those. Only Morwen and Ónar would likely live to see them naturally. Or at least to live to the point to see them...Any ways! I'm off topic!

Goblins do bow down to Orc and this Orcs often use them. Moria, or Khazad-dûm if you're a dwarf, was taken by the Balrog. Also known as Durin's bane. When they awoke the ancient creature it went on a rampage and killed several of the Durin line even killing their current King Durin VI, hints the name, before the dwarves of Durin fled. But Sauron during the second age tried to push his orcs to take Khazad-dûm, because it was the dwarves from there that where turning the tide during battles. But they couldn't take it. The orcs found Khazad-dûm too deep and strong and filled with a people too numerous and valiant for Sauron to conquer from without. But when the Balrog pushed them out, after five centures, the orcs the Sauron had been trying to push in finally got to and some of the goblins that live within the blue mountains also moved in. They finished off any dwarf too foolish to remain, if any, and hints forth it was name Moria, meaning the Black Pit.

Battle map is updated.

To be clear, you DON'T get Advantage on the saves vs the Shadow points. You ONLY get Advantage on rolls against the Spider.

You also get a +1 to all skill rolls (but not attack rolls or saves, I think).

Good luck! This is a perilous foe indeed.

Female Rohirrim Slayer 1 | 13 HP | AC 15 | Perception +4 | Initiative +2 | Insight +4 | Wis save +2 | Con save +3 | Portrait

Ah! Just zoomed in on the spider and now i wish I hadn't.

Scribe of Middle-Earth

A Frightened character has Disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls while the source of their fear is in line of sight. They also can't willing move closer to the source of the fear.

Thankfully, Morwen and Harry have Advantage so having Disadvantage merely puts you back to where you were - and you're using missile weapons, so you don't need to move any closer :)

Just waiting on Bergur and Onar to post their actions this round.

Everyone's current hit points are located in the "status" spoiler. If you want to know how many Shadow points, Inspiration points, hit points or anything else, it's the place to be :)

EDIT: that doesn't mean you can't keep track of this stuff yourselves. But the "status" spoiler is definitive.

@EVERYONE - I'm still getting to speed with the rules of this system. If your character has a special ability ("I never get lost" or "I can't be surprised" or "I always know what's going on") please remind me frequently as I won't remember it by default. Thanks!

Just remembered myself that Ónar possesses the following ability from his background:

Foreknowledge; Your dream often grants you riddles, verses and visions that not only directly aid you on your quest but also tangentially give you an insight into people and places that may only be peripherally related to your dream. Whenever you enter a new community or meet a person of note, you may have a flash of insight about their relationship to your dream. For example, if you are meeting a lord for the first time you may recall that a dream-verse indicates that he acts honourably, which likely means that you can trust him. Similarly, you may walk into a community with a vision of their friendly faces turning to abandonment and even betrayal when they stand with others in the face of Shadow.

Think any visions and insight would be on your fiat DM WL... Am not looking to have the foreknowledge be a common occurrence, so would prefer any such dream visions to be significant when they occur. Just thought I'd flag it up should you want to forward plan etc :)

@Onar - noted. Will do my best to try and remember but like I said earlier, please keep reminding me of this stuff so I don't forget to use it.

From our previous posts, it looks like the watch order was

Illyria
Morwen
Bergur
Harry

Now that we have Ónar who also can see in the dark, I would suggest we put him after Bergur.

Illyria
Morwen
Bergur
Ónar
Harry

Revised Watch Order makes sense :)

For avoidance of doubt: yes, following Belgo means leaving the Elf-path.

Okay, IC I’ve just proposed...splitting the party. [dun dun DUUUUN!]

The thing is, I’m not sure what else to do. Take Halla with us? Leave her alone while we all go off on what we have every reason to believe might be a suicide mission?

Both Bergur and I are open to suggestions.

Female Rohirrim Slayer 1 | 13 HP | AC 15 | Perception +4 | Initiative +2 | Insight +4 | Wis save +2 | Con save +3 | Portrait

I think we have to do that. Taking Halla with us is a non-starter.

But my suggestion would be for just 1 of us to stay. Leaving the Elf-path is likely to be more deadly than staying on it.

I'm not as much use without my horse anyway, and Illyria has made some sort of connection with Halla so it makes sense for her to stay behind. But I think the everyone else should go.

Male Barding Treasure Hunter 1 | HP: 9/9 | AC 14 | Perception +4 | Initiative +3 | Insight +6 | Wis Save +2 | Con Save +1

That’s a decent compromise. Sorry to leave you out of the action, but you are the best IC choice to take care of Halla. (And get her to safety, should the worst happen.)

Halla should not venture off the path unless there is literally no other option.

So this plan sounds as good as it gets!

Yeah, that wasn't entirely clear, my bad. The pause was meant to give you time to dismount and put yourself between Halla and the spiders, but it could have been clearer.

Just curious if that will work.
