And we can spend our gold freely in between modules, but we cannot exceed the amount of magical items as laid out in the guide?

Yes as long as we are tier 1, we get inspiration and a potion that is use it or lose it. In between modules you can freely purchase anything from the PHB equipment chapter. The magic item limit is for permanent magic items (Common magic items notwithstanding), but magic items (short of potions/consumables listed in the ALPG) are not for sale.

Also, you fully heal between modules.
