So is everyone in the party up?

AvernusArt 2Grid

Shae and Mender are down currently, most others at quite low hp indeed.

Target Giu, Gor: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Dmg: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3

The fiery painting steals the last bit of energy from the paladin...

The painter meanwhile seems wholly aloof the entire time, barely paying the fight any attention other than a sharp "Can you keep it down? The artist is at work!"

Party up. Mender, Gor, Shae down. Mender and Gor need a death save. With the 2 magmin on the right side gone, there is a path around to painter with disengage. 2 magmin remain...

Hold up, I was waiting for Gor to roll his own healing potion. The Second Wind was me (what brought me back up to 4 hp). Shall I roll the potion for Gor?

If so, potion for Gor: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (3, 3) + 2 = 8

Male Half Elf HP 10 | AC: 15 | Saves: Str: +0; Dex: +1; Con: +2; Int: +0; Wis: +5; Cha: +4 | Initiative: +1 | Spell Slots: 0 (2) | Inspiration: [ ]

This has turned rather quickly

The potion was for last round, this round...

Gods, please hear me, I ask your aid...

Giuseppe takes a few quick breaths and surges forward at a full run toward the magmin!

Don't know if this is going to work, but I am going to try to leap over the pair of Magmin, rolling up to my feet and run toward the artist! Action: Disengage

Strength (Athletics) at Disadv: 2d20 + 4 ⇒ (18, 7) + 4 = 29 Only an 11...

So I have failed 2 death saves then, since I was damaged while making death saves?

It depends on how you were dropped. If you were dropped by their attacks, then each of the explosions would be a failure. If you were dropped by the first explosion, then you would only have one failure. If someone deliberately attacks you while you are down, then it is 2, because of the critical hit. Hope I am not being too confusing. Do you still have your inspiration?

I do. I'm just waiting to see how our glorious GM weighs in.

This party just cannot catch a break. Holy hell.

AvernusArt 2Grid

Yes, things as they are, with that 8 roll Mender has died. The magmin attack reduced his hp to 1 and he became on fire. Instead of putting himself out with an action, he cast a spell, and the fire killed him at the end of his turn. Then the two explosions gave 2 more death save failures. They were not attack rolls so they could not crit.

However, one thing that annoys me is how messed up this is with regard to the initiative order that was rolled. We all agree to make that concession for ease of PBP play, but for stuff like this it really quirks stuff up. Mender was technically at the very end of the initiative order. Were we at a table, Sha/Io/Gor would have all attacked before Mender cast a spell or even had a chance to douse himself, and therefore the explosions would have happened before he dropped...it couldve played out quite different (For example having seen the explosive nature of their deaths he may have chosen to reposition).

So because of that annoying (to me) quirk, lets just say he is down and has failed 2 death saves instead of three.

AvernusArt 2Grid

Giu, you can definitely get over the magmin and get into painters range with disengage, you can just walk around them (only purple and green up there is no need for athletics roll).

I'm a bit confused....did Io make the second dex save vs the exploding mini flamey guy? The role was 15 but you said he fell. Kind of determines what I do next!

AvernusArt 2Grid

It was save for half damage so it still knocked you down. I was waiting to see though if you wanted to adjust your action after noticing the first explosion.

Oh duh, got it, thanks. Yeah I think his INT is high enough (10) he wouldn't have done that twice. If we are running around with our packs on, he has a crossbow in there somewhere. He would instead spend the round fishing that out and backing up.

AvernusArt 2Grid

Sure thing. Indeed its quite the sloppy mess here, please lets just push through to the end if we can.

All but Giu and Mender still have actions for this new round.
Green and purple are the only magmin still up.

I still have inspiration, so I was going to reroll my death save if I was dead. I just wanted to see if it would matter or not.

I think I am done. Action: Disengage, Move: 30 feet toward the artist.

EDIT: I think Gorum should have an action left, if he has 6 hp (9 hp from potion -3 hp from the hit) now...

Pretty sure I’m unconscious, but I still inspiration as well. Let me know what you need me to roll GM

AvernusArt 2Grid

Sha you don't need to roll since Quen stabilized you.

Giu, Mender, Sha, Io, Gor, Quen <--UP

2 magmins and the painter remain. Gor can still take a corrected action from the first round in addition to this new round if he chooses.

Crossbow attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20, damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

After making sure to keep some distance this time, Io pulls a crossbow out of his pack, quickly loads it, and fires at the nearest target which looks like red; here's hoping this somehow damages the thing!.

Hopefully one of us can get a potion down Mender's throat soon, yipes

AvernusArt 2Grid

Io, red is not up. Updated map with current situation, take a look. Note that if you drop one of the magmin with Mender within 10 ft, he will autofail his final death save and die.

CG human fighter (battlemaster) 5 | AC 17, 19 w shield | hp 44/44 (0/5 HD used)| Saves: S +7*, D +4*, C +6*, I +1*, W +2*, Ch +2* | Insp [ ] | Second Wind [ ] | Action Surge [ ] | Sup Dice used 0/4 | Passive Per 14 | Stat Block

I am not within 5 feet of the artist, am I? I think if Gorum can use his last 1 hp from his lay on hands, he can possibly drag Mender back and heal him to 1 hp... At least, I am hoping...

AvernusArt 2Grid

No, your 30 ft movement didnt quite get there last round. But of course you can step up and attack next round if you choose.

I thought so, was checking in case Io wanted the sneak damage on him... :p

AvernusArt 2Grid

Quen, the spell ensures success. Would you like to also perhaps pull him back a few squares so his carcass isnt caught in future explosions?

Ah sorry about the confusion. Io would only fire if there was no friendly person adjacent. If it can apply to one of the ones currently blocking us from the painter, great. If not, will use that next round and either way, intention is to get to the painter. Without catching on fire.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
AvernusArt 2Grid

You could fire at the painter. The magmins are size small so do not present cover.

AvernusArt 2Grid

The paladin stands defensively, ready for anything in the face of danger...Gor dodges

Suddenly a dark masked man, one of the Hawks no doubt, forward flips out the front of a burning building to the east. His thin dark clothes still smoldering, he attempts to draw off some of the heat...

Hawk Dart: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

...catching one of the dancing paintings sharply in the throat. The magmin chases after the hawk...

The other one advances to attack the paladin...

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Attack, disadvantage: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

...but Gor turns the bizarre living paint attacks to splatter instead upon the concrete.

Meanwhile, the painter continues painting. Pausing a moment to consider a certain crimson hue.

Party up. Map updated.

Giuseppe moves to the artist, Stop this, or I will stop you.

Presuming that he will continue raving, Giuseppe brings the butt of his sword down on the back of the man's neck.

AvernusArt 2Grid

At Giuseppe's order, the aloof painter rambles "...and if you hear a voice say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced..."

*clonk*

With a girlish sigh, the crazed man is instantly knocked out, hitting the ground...sadly, his creations yet endure.

AvernusArt 2Grid

Yes, only Sha is KO (but stable) once Mender rolls the healing potion Io gave him.

Sir Gorum attempts to draw the paint splotch towards him towards the north...there is a moment before it follows where the magmin stands alone in the middle of the street.

I'll say Gor in this brief moment has disengaged north and out of the range of a possible death burst from green.

Mender, the artist is down, there is one magmin that is clear of allies around it.

Mender, Ill assume you're attacking that one instead.

Dex vs Mender: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Mender's divine energies are unable to decipher the living essence of this painted construct, the chorus calls receding with a note of disappointment and confusion.

The magmin follows Sir Gorum's goading and bounces along to attack...

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

...luckily missing the already singed orc flesh.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

...the one assaulting the Hawk likewise fails to find a way past the nimble fighters defenses. The Hawk counters, pulling dual shortswords from his back in a quick downward slash...

Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Off Hand: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

...but the burning hues slide through the cross gap, frustrating the melee.
