Action 1:

Zdravko had been trained in illusion magic as part of her shadow arts, even mastering the most basic incantation despite her other equally as taxing studies. The fact that her companions believed her arm to be missing, when it clearly wasn't, planted the seed of doubt in her mind about this place.

"Illusion, yes. Misdirection, I expect. It forced Artur to move forward in reaction to what he thought was real, did it not? It deluded us all into spending resources that were, to some extent, not necessary. I know this art well..."

She snaps her fingers in your face twice and then looks down. There's a huge solid gold bar lying on the floor. "It is what you think you see, not what it is." Minor Illusion

Action 2:

"...they must have killed them all." she concludes. "Or the artist is biased by his own culture. Perhaps the painter behind this scene is orc..." She tries to walk through the wall as well.

"That's possible. We can try to bring the limbs to them and see what happens, but we might need to run if that doesn't appease them." said Artur as he started walking back towards the now finished swarm.

Once there, he collected an armful of the rotting arms, returned to the ghosts, and dropped them in the center of the room.

Assuming that worked:

Artur made multiple trips to return all of the limbs to the ghosts. After the last trip, he turned to Veratash and said "Good job!"

Upon Veratash's insight and suggestion, Tharivol returned to the swarm of limbs. He undid is cloak and filled it like a sack to drag toward the spirits. The dragonmarked elf emptied his makeshift sack within the ghosts and did as many trips as necessary to move the pile of limbs.

DM question:
So, reading up on Dhakaani the other day, I noticed spiked chain being mentioned as a popular weapon. I thought that might be a cool monk weapon for Z. I'd use the spear stats for it, d8 piercing and throwable/retractable (like this). I was thinking, maybe its a hidden property of the Stargash blade she hasn't found yet (like rotate the hilt and a chain drops out connected to the blade). OR, since the ghost had mention of wrist scars, maybe she finds a chain related to that.

Briar let her cold, frozen rage burn inside her, its touch like acid as it ate away at the ribbon wounds the Master's blades had wrought.

She took her glaive in both hands and used it like a hammer, its crushing force coming down once, twice...

slashing: 1d10 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 2 = 12

...The monster's guard beaten aside for a moment, Briar stepped close, acid blood dripping on the floor, her eyes all black, she smashed her forehead in to the thing's face...

Glaive haft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
slashing: 1d4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6

...it was too swift, like it could read her thoughts before she moved. It laughed at her.

She then spat in its face, gritting her teeth in anticipation of the counterattack.

Liti continued to harass the creature, her neck serpent-quick, snaking around the thing's legs and reaching up to tear at the belly...

Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Extra Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
piercing: 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 3) + 3 = 8

...yet she too found it hard to strike at the phantasm, that seemed to be where it wasn't. She snarled in frustration as her teeth snapped closed on empty air.

Anyone else having issues with the Paizo website right now? I have to get a mod to run on Thursday, but my shopping cart simply will not load.

Also, I should be out of level 1 slots. I had one when the Phantom appeared and then threw a level 1 magic missile at it.

Nyd begins to repeat his gestures from the previous spell, but the gestures go on a bit longer, and a little more complex, as Nyd uses a higher spell slot to cast the anti-apparition spell.

Magic Missile 1: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Magic Missile 2: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Magic Missile 3: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Magic Missile 4: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

And again, Nyd prepares to counter spells or elemental damage, though it seems that this foe might wield neither.

OOC: What I usually do in my games is I take a monster with a CR equal to the party's level, then double or triple its HP, depending on how min-maxed the group is.

I was feeling more challenged in the first encounters where I was being hunted. Also the blue mansion fight was scary too. The rotten wood floor and the wide spaces were interesting spice.

Stunning Strike is nice when it lands. On single foe encounters anything that removes actions is pretty strong. I think Z's/monk damage is pretty meh even when rolling decent. Liti's 2 strikes can equal her 4 (which requires ki). ;p

IMO the stock encounter builder from DMG or Fight Club is pretty borked though for anything above 4 PCs. Counting Liti, we have 7. Multiple foes and environmental effects can balance it out too of course.

But another thing is, statistics. Can't analyze science/engineering on a single data point. Can't judge an encounter on a single run. Rolling decent and stun landed...this time. And final point, DM and players see fights differently. When my monsters are getting slaughtered my players are usually just thinking 'we did a good job' and high-fiveing not 'that was boring/easy'.

Off-topic: high-fiveing autocorrects to high-fingering...

I thought the arms were pretty neat actually. The 'arm detachment' trick got Nyd a new phobia, lol.

I'll admit that sometimes that sometimes Nyd doesn't feel to be contributing too much. I keep burning through spell slots, but my rolls always feel low, particularly with skill checks, and while I've cast every spell I have prepare at least once (with one exception), I keep falling back on the same spell.

Realizing that the opening created by his party, Nyd gestures mechanically with his wand, and launches a bolt of chilling cold frosts the phantom over.

Frostbite: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 4) + 1 = 8 -- DC 17 Con Save to negate. If it fails it has disadvantage on its first attack next turn.

Tharivol pulled another arrow from his quiver and drew down on the master of knives. He continued to hum the tune that played in the Sharn target gallery of pop up monsters. The minstrel paused when the whirling dervish goblin passed and the master of stunned paused and released the fletching.

I think the combats have, for the most part, be really well balanced. A couple of them have had me sweating bullets, and one or two have been easier. I think, for example, that barring the chuul we would have won the cultist combat, but not without casualties.

That's my idea of good balance for a campaign's combats: the PCs being alive at the end, all in single HP status, with almost no spells or other resources left, and even less consumables.

Artur calmed himself, closing his eyes for a moment, then raised his rifle, slowly took aim at the creature's face, and fired.

The goblin, senses fully heightened from the battle, nevertheless stumbled as she lurched forward. Seemingly about to speak, all that came was a *hiccup* and Zdravko vanished completely with a soft thunderous rumbling...exploding into a thousand shadowy snakelike tendrils.

An instant later her solid form reappeared, and she glanced down at her hands confused. But as Liti's body was rended she snapped back to action and continued her assault...

Just foreshadowing next level class power there.

Stargash: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Dmg: 1d6 + 3 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 5 = 13 Fury of the Small
Stargash, EA: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Dmg: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Zdravko slipped a dagger from her waist and lunged, plunging the two blades into the things chest. Then, she alternatingly removed one and reinserted just a bit higher, then the other...climbing up the creature to its face. Once there, the prize was before her: a nose. She latched onto the shnoz with her 4 1/2 goblin fangs, tearing it from his face before escaping.

Bonus disengage.
