Kolgradd is impressed and grateful as Boodiddly matches magic for magic with this blobbly creature of chaos, but he launches into action when it grabs Jevar.

"No!"

He steps to flank the evil old git with Boodiddly and strikes, hoping whatever curse caused him to miss so badly is exorcised.

Jevar tries and fails to escape the old man’s grasp, then puts up a shield.

Kolgradd moves to flank the old man and hits him twice.

Boodiddly sings and throws a dagger, but misses.

Shakur throws a dagger and cuts into the man.

The old man brings himself close to Jevar’s ear and whispers.

Jevar, relieved that the old man released his grip, rapidly backs away returning fire.

To the North

This underground storage room is furnished with two large wooden shelving units on the west and east walls, holding many small chests, caskets, and several loose objects. In the middle of the floor lies a wooden coffin.

A search of the sundries reveals a set of professional-looking clothing as well as a silver seal matrix—a bell-shaped object with Thrushmoor’s crest engraved on its flat bottom and a ring for a string or ribbon at the top.

Society 17:
These are items that are used by Thrushmoor’s magistrate.

As the amnesiacs start to continue to the north, Boodiddly suddenly notices, subtly imprinted on the floor, is the Yellow Sign, clearly magically inscribed.

Boodiddly Thievery: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

The gnome easily scrapes away the magic sigil without triggering the hazard.

To the North

The walls of this bitterly cold room are clad with raw wooden boards. Many blocks of hazy ice and wooden crates of various sizes are stacked near the walls. This room just leads up to the building where y’all fought the cannibals.

To the East

A low, circular stone wall marks the lip of a well in the center of this room. A bucket sits beside a block and tackle attached to a wooden frame near the wall of this round chamber. A corridor exits to the west.

There is a small crevice that holds a nest of rats. The rats themselves do put up a fight, but are inconsequential. Inside the nest of note is a single diamond ring worth 100 gp. Inventory Updated

Backtracking and through the double doors

This elongated subterranean hall is decorated throughout with finely wrought Pharasmin symbols, which culminate in a seven-foot-high bas-relief of the goddess’s face on the south wall. Against the other walls, whose surfaces are riddled with burial recesses, sit seven sarcophagi, four sealed and three uncovered. Maps Updated

Leaning against one of the sarcophagi is a strangely-dressed woman twirling a kukri in one hand. The woman wears a scarf over her head and face in a traditional Keleshite manner, as well as flowing silk clothing that covers her entire body—the only skin that is revealed are her wrists, which jangle with various bracelets; her hands, which end in pointed, well-manicured nails; and around her eyes where the scarf does not cover her face. She appears human, however her pure-white eyes and disturbingly-long limbs seem to indicate that this woman may be an elf.

The woman looks up as the door opens and she grips her kukri tightly. ”So, the prodigal amnesiacs return at last!” She speaks with a Kelesh accent, but something is…off when she speaks. Not with her accent or what she says, its something about her that seems off. ”And without the orc. A shame. Since you don’t recall, I am Weiralai Character Profiles Updated. Do not forget it this time. You have made a grave mistake returning here. Lowls should have finished the job of sacrificing you instead of sending you to that...doctor. You won’t interfere with Melisenn’s work any longer.”

Weiralai intones and snaps her fingers as she becomes surrounded in magical energy (that Boodiddly immediately recognizes as occult magic), and in the blink of an eye she quadruples as four Weiralais stand before the amnesiacs. All four then sprint to the other side of the room.

Boodiddly:
Occultism: Weiralai’s magic seems…cold and otherworldly. He’s not entirely sure why, but he recalls stories of the plateau of Leng, the realm of nightmares, whose aberrant denizens are well-known slavers and raiders. When outside of their home realm, denizens of Leng typically wear flowy clothing that covers most of their body in an attempt to appear humanoid. They always maintain a certain connection to the plateau, which heals them periodically. Translation: denizens of Leng have fast healing while they are not on Leng.

This is an important thing that Boodiddly’s player said his character would do: Boodiddly shouts ”We will banish you back to your nightmare plane of Leng!”

I'll keep the save

Kolgradd experiences a primeval horror on seeing Weiralai's true form. His vision narrows to a point, and the words "nightmare dimension" ring in his mind.

He's brought round from his shock though when he finds himself slammed into the floor and bitten by an extra-dimensional nightmare. He manages a shout when he hits her from the floor "Hah!", and bursts into action.

Boodiddly gives Weiralai’s alien gaze a cool reception, staring back unflinchingly even though every muscle in his tiny body is screaming for him to run. “Things I shouldn’t know? Perhaps you’re referring to the fact that I know you can’t eat solid food with those jaws and must have your food ground into mush just like a baby?” The music dies down, but the gnome continues to speak. “Or maybe it’s that I know that you know that I know that your name is really Verily,” (though he pronounces the word “VER-eh-lai”. “Verily Fruitcake, to be precise.”

Weiralai lowers her shoulder and suddenly bull-rushes into Kolgradd!

GM Screen:
1d100 ⇒ 47

You know you guys can roll your rerolls yourself, right?

Kolgradd:
Madness Reroll: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19 Still a failure, but the madness has an onset.

Resolving in turn order (rather than post order): Kolgradd reacts and hits Weiralai easily, and then he moves over to her and bashes her in the head, knocking her unconscious! Jevar can keep the acid arrow.

Now, unfortunately, Weiralai has fast healing (not regeneration), so truly trying to subdue her is very unlikely (especially since she’s higher level than y’all), so here’s how I’m going to resolve this:

Weiralai DC 5 flat check (if someone successfully Grapples her): 1d20 ⇒ 16

Weiralai awakens from unconsciousness and scrambles for her fallen kukri. ”I won’t forget what happened here.”

Trigger Warning: Suicide (just to be safe):
Weiralai vs herself: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (10) + 18 = 28 Going to make a ruling based on the Violent Healing sidebar on this page that Weiralai increases the degree of success of her roll by one step since she’s a willing target.
Damage (doubled from crit): 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 4) + 6 = 12 plus 1d12 persistent bleed

Weiralai steadfastly chops the kukri deep into her neck! The wound bleeds profusely. Dying 2 from a crit, +1 from wounded 1, and then at the end of that turn she takes persistent damage, meaning that she becomes dying 4.

Weiralai’s unmoving body lies slumped on the floor, and curiously, after 1d4 ⇒ 3 rounds, the body itself dissolves into nothingness, leaving behind her clothing and anything she had on her.

Healing:
Assurance for the DC 20
Healing to Kolgradd: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (6, 7) + 10 = 23
Healing to Kolgradd: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (1, 5) + 10 = 16
Healing to Kolgradd: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (2, 1) + 10 = 13
Then Shakur Refocuses

So, Kolgradd’s clumsy 1 condition was actually a result of a curse that Weiralai inflicts with her pincers, and because of that Kolgradd actually can’t remove the condition without something that removes curses (like remove curse). Thankfully the condition goes away on its own, but for now Kolgradd is clumsy 1 for the rest of the day.

GM Screen:
Boodiddly vs kukri: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33
Boodiddly vs Scroll: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
4d20 ⇒ (19, 10, 1, 10) = 40
3d20 ⇒ (18, 15, 3) = 36

Loot:
The sarcophagi do have loot in them, but I’m pretty sure the Pharasmin would take offense to stealing the jewelry that was buried with the Lowlses, so I’m not including it here.

Among Weiralai’s remaining belongings are two fist-sized rubies worth 30 gp, as well as her kukri (which Boodiddly identifies as a +1 striking wounding kukri). She also had two scrolls: one of the scrolls is blank, and the other is a scroll of talking corpse.

Inventory Updated

Occultism 25:
Those rubies have been mined from the quarries of the nightmare plateau of Leng.

If you critically succeed, open the spoiler below

Spoiler:
Those who willing accept a Leng ruby that was willingly given by a denizen of Leng can be targeted by the fell magic of any denizen of Leng within one mile. (But because Weiralai didn’t willingly give these to you, then you are fine).

Lying on top of one of the sarcophagi is the rotting corpse of a woman wearing the regalia of one of Ustalav’s Royal Accusors.

Notes on the sarcophagi:
Two of the sarcophagi are unmarked and uncovered. The rest of them are marked as follows:

Haserton Pragmus Lowls III, 4631-4694
Gordel “Brigandslayer” Lowls II, 4589-4655
Ulunda Lowls, 4602-4661
Cerilde Lowls, 4593-4659
Elistor Lowls, 4672-4693

Society 25:
Nemira Lowls should be interred here with the rest of her family.

Boodiddly discovers that the bas relief of Pharasma to the south is actually a secret door, behind which is a staircase that descends downward.

Box-text for the room to the north:
In the middle of a circular, vaulted chamber, standing on a platform of natural bedrock, a black stone monolith similar to the two Star Stelae in Thrushmoor glows with a pale, yellow light. Blood stains the floor surrounding the monument.

Box-text for the room to the south:
This large chamber resembles the courtyard of an ancient, subterranean palace, with columns supporting a 30-foot high cloister dome. In the middle of the floor, a tile mosaic of the Yellow Sign emits a thin, yellow vapor that fills the room with a faint odor of chrysanthemums. The vapor rises to the concave dome of the vault, through which an image of the minarets, towers, and spires of a mysterious city silhouetted against a yellow sky can be seen. The image sways softly with a slow alternation of light and darkness, to the sound of invisible pipes and strings. At the far end of the chamber, a marble throne sits within a semicircular apse. A floor-to-ceiling band of gilded mosaics decorates the walls, depicting a fantastic urban landscape populated by figures in flowing robes and full-face masks.

As Kolgradd and Shakur descend further, they see two winged creatures that combine the features of a carrion bird, an ant, a bat, and a decomposing human in the most hideous of fashions! I’ll hold off on the sanity saves until everyone has seen the creatures.

Aberration Lore: These creatures are byakhees, insatiable bloodsuckers from the space between the stars. These creatures’ anatomies are beyond your comprehension; they are capable to surviving attacks that most creatures would be unable to. Translation: resistance to precision damage and critical hits.

Behind the creature is a rather normal-looking creature compared to the horrors the amnesiacs have seen in Iris Hill thus far: a beautiful, olive-skinned woman in very expensive clothing and jewelry—to call this woman a “noble” would be a slight understatement. The woman stares angrily at the amnesiacs. She begins incanting and waving her hands as she is surrounded by divine energy! She walks forward, rising in altitude as it becomes clear that she is walking upon the air as if it were solid ground!

”If you think your condition means you’re important, you’re wrong! You are nothing!”

Tangent:
For the record, in the initiative card whenever I list “X feet above ground,” I am referring to where that creature’s feet are relative to the ground; whenever a creature is “0 feet above the ground” (meaning that they either have their feet planted on the ground, like the PCs currently, or are otherwise hovering a few inches above the ground), then I omit it.

Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (1, 3) + 5 = 9

The dwarf then swings his hammer, connecting with the strange creature twice! Though it still remains standing.

Shakur advances forward and places a curse upon the woman.

Woman Will: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (7) + 19 = 26

The woman continues her monologue. ”You are an ember floating from some putrid bonfire that will also wink out in the cold death of the universe.”

She looks downward at the hammer-wielding dwarf and begins Casts a Spell.

GM Screen:
DC 20: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

↻ Jevar:
You do not know what spell she just cast.

The woman snaps her fingers and points at Kolgradd, who suddenly feels pins and needles in eyes.

Kolgradd Fort; inspire defense: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 12 + 1 = 15 Critical Failure I will pause to allow Kolgradd the choice of whether or not to reroll; the effects of this spell won’t matter until after Jevar’s turn.

The woman then reaches to her hip and draws a rapier, though she does not look particularly well-versed in using the weapon.

Kolgradd’s reroll is, unfortunately, still a failure (but not a critical failure).

Kolgradd feels pins and needles in his eyes as suddenly, all of his sight disappears! Kolgradd is blinded for 1 minute.

Tangent:
So, I do feel the need to mention that being blinded in 2e is actually not as bad as it was in 1e. Yes, you still treat everything as difficult terrain and have to make a DC 11 flat check to successfully target something, but you are still able to TARGET stuff. And, unless creatures take specific actions (mostly Sneak) to move away from where they are, a blinded person still knows what space creatures are in because they’re hidden from them (which inherently means that you know what space they occupy), meaning that Kolgradd can still take AoOs (just with a DC 11 flat check). Being blinded is definitely still debilitating, but it’s not completely neutralizing.

Botting Jevar: Jevar uses his magic and launches several missiles at the byakhee in front of Kolgradd! ◆◆◆ magic missile

Force Damage: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 3, 2) + 3 = 12

The byakhee in front of Kolgradd looks at the dwarf hungrily as it bites at him!

Black jaws vs Kolgradd FF w/clumsy 1 and inspire defense: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (14) + 14 = 28
Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (5, 3) + 5 = 13

The beast sinks its fangs into Kolgradd and latches onto him with its claws ◆ Grab! It then moves to bite into the dwarf’s arm to drink his blood! ◆ Drain Blood; Kolgradd becomes drained 1.

As the creature sucks on Kolgradd’s blood, it doesn’t necessarily look revitalized by the act, but there is a sudden, insatiable hunger that appears in its eyes! ◇ Bloodlust; Black gets 11 temporary HP along with some other bonuses and penalties.

White likewise rushes over to Shakur and attempts to bite the Pharasmin!

White jaws vs Shakur; bane: 1d20 + 14 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 14 - 1 = 21
Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 6) + 5 = 14

The creature then follows up with a swipe with its claw.

White claw vs Shakur; bane, 2nd, agile: 1d20 + 14 - 1 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 14 - 1 - 4 = 19
Damage: 2d4 + 5 ⇒ (2, 3) + 5 = 10

I think I mentioned this at one point in time to this group, but I’m unsure, so I’ll say it again: whenever I put “+#” in the parentheses in the initiative card, it’s used to signify temporary HP (which is why I keep it separate from the “-#” that I use to represent damage taken). Also, once again, the HP loss from the drained condition is not included in the damage Kolgradd has taken (the “-#”) in the initiative card below.

Boodiddly harmonizes.

Kolgradd swings in his blindness, feeling himself knocking the byakhee’s head clean off! He moves over to the other one, and swings twice, missing both times. Replacing the Escape with a Stride to White.

Botting Shakur: Shakur moves over behind Kolgradd, casts shield and concentrates on his bane to increase the radius to 10 feet.

The woman standing on air spreads her arms outward. ”We are all worthless before the Unspeakable One! Even if he has marked you, I am the one who will open this world to him—not Lowls, and not you!”

The woman begins Casting a Spell, one that is very familiar to Shakur and Jevar as a 4th-level spiritual weapon!

↻ Jevar:
Rolling Religion because you could get a crit success: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 And you didn’t.

A shimmering rapier of pure force materializes right next to Jevar! The woman then lunges forward with her own rapier, which causes the spiritual weapon to strike identically to the one in her own hand!

Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (6, 4) + 5 = 15

Kolgradd flails about in his blindness, but actually manages to land a hit on the byakhee! Though, he wasn’t so lucky with attempting to escape its grasp.

Woman basic Reflex: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (10) + 15 = 25

Damn, I'm not sure how I missed that. I think I should only be Frightened 1 with bravery

Screaming with pain and frustration, Kolgradd lets out the magical energy he prepared this morning with a word that guides his strike.

◆ Advantageous Assault? He may not realise it's prone I suppose so maybe just a strike
Flat check: 1d20 ⇒ 6

◆ Shield
He's low on HP so he'll save his reaction for shield-block and use it the first chance he gets

Boodiddly edges into the room, continuing to clap encouragingly even as he looks up at the hovering woman. “You keep saying that like you’re trying to convince yourself,” he quips, a cheeky smile on his battered face. “Show her how it’s done, Shakur!”

Cast inspire defense [A], Stride [A], and cast guidance on Shakur [A].

"Uhh...Let's pretend we didn't see that, alright?"

◆◆ Spiritual Weapon

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

I completely forgot about Bravery, so Kolgradd indeed should have been only frightened 1.

Kolgradd slams his maul into the byakhee and knocks it onto the ground! Though, miraculously, it is still conscious! Taking out the +1 to damage from inspire courage since Boodiddly didn’t actually cast it this round.

Boodiddly moves forward as he continues his song.

Shakur summons a dagger of force that he sends at the woman.

The airborne woman scoffs. ”Enough of this!”

GM Screen:
1d20 ⇒ 14

↻ Jevar:
3rd-level divine sound burst

The woman waves her arms around and utters an incantation. She snaps her fingers, and a sudden BOOM of sonic energy manifests right next to Jevar and Boodiddly! Yellow radius

Basic Fort; inspire defense:
Sonic Damage: 3d10 ⇒ (3, 9, 7) = 19
Boodiddly: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 12 + 1 = 25Failure
Jevar; frightened 1: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 - 1 = 15 Critical failure
Kolgradd; drained 1: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 11 + 1 = 28 Success

Boodiddly gets an unnerving ringing in his ears, and Jevar is shaken to his bones by the sonic energy! Boodiddly is deafened for 1 round, and Jevar is deafened for 1 minute as well as stunned 1.

Tangent:
Technically, the deafened condition only requires a flat check for auditory actions, which does NOT necessarily include spellcasting, which is silly to me. One of the things in my house rules document is that providing verbal components for a spell will still require a deafened creature to make a flat check.

”Hmph. Now as for you…” The woman points her rapier down at Shakur, and her own spiritual weapon flies over at the Pharasmin and lunges at him!

Woman vs Shakur w/frightened 1 and inspire defense: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17
Force Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (4, 7) + 4 = 15

As the sword flies straight past Shakur, the woman just stares incredulously. ”Uhh…Yes, let’s pretend that didn’t happen, indeed.”

Botting Jevar: Loses one action from being stunned 1. Unable to hear anything that is going on, Jevar unsheathes his dagger and casts hand of the apprentice at the woman! Which only has a somatic component, so it won’t risk failing from the flat check.

Jevar vs woman; frightened 1: 1d20 + 12 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 12 - 1 = 28
Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

The barely-conscious byakhee glares up at Kolgradd and stands, then flies over and interposes itself between Shakur and the woman! I’ll let Kolgradd decide whether or not to use an AoO there, because you know it’s moving away from you and you could feasibly kill it with the AoO.

Assuming it survives the potential AoO: The byakhee, hovering five feet above the ground, bites at Shakur!

White vs Shakur w/frightened 1 and inspire defense; bloodlust, bane: 1d20 + 14 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 14 + 1 - 1 = 31
Damage; bloodlust: 2d6 + 5 + 4 ⇒ (3, 5) + 5 + 4 = 17

Shakur will probably Shield Block, but for now I’m going to assume otherwise until I get confirmation on how Kolgradd wants to spend his reaction.
