--BOOK I: THE BRINEWALL LEGACY--

Oathday, the 4th of Arodus, AR 4711--Sandpoint, Varisia

This is the first, last, and only time I will make any decisions for your character; they're only for getting us to where this campaign begins.

The road from Magnimar was dusty, as always. The length and condition of the journey was no less familiar to you than your companions, your family. But unlike so many other trips between the city and your home of Sandpoint, the frontier town further up the coast of the Varisian Gulf, this one had an ominous air. It was not silent; Atsuii was still insistent on going over your latest lessons, Ameiko played her shamisen, and even Lonjiku, stoic and seemingly lost in grim thought for much of the trip, did not still his tongue entirely.

But the mood, these past two days, has not been jovial, or even very comfortable. Your parents have both been dour and quiet since the events in Magnimar; any questions about the discussion they mentioned, or about the event itself--the man, the name he asked for, the sudden rush to leave the city when you returned to the inn--are met with gentle but firm admonitions to wait. Even Ameiko, normally so open to discuss anything, merely looks guilty and turns her eyes from you if you ask. "Mother and father say we must wait until we're home to talk about it," she says. "Please trust them, sister. This is important. For all of us."

So two days passed, with Lonjiku driving the wagon through the night and only short breaks for rest. By the time Sandpoint came into view, its familiar streets and buildings seemed almost as unrecognizable as your family's behavior, and returning to the Rusty Dragon offered little comfort as the sun began to set across the waters.

- - - - -

It is past sundown when Ameiko knocks on your door and gestures for you to follow her. The inn is far quieter than you are used to, even at this hour, and your way through the upper floor's halls is lit only by the candle in your sister's hand. She brings you to the family's common room, a rarely used place in a building where the family frequents the areas below. But the room is homely: tapestries on the walls, a shrine to Shizuru and your ancestors at one end, mats and cushions for sitting. Atsuii and Lonjiku are already seated on the floor, candles lit next to them as well to provide dim light, casting flickering shadows across their faces and the room behind them. Ameiko bows to them and takes a seat to the side. Atsuii gestures for you to take the seat before them.

Seated, you look to your family in turn. Ameiko looks anxious, more than anything; you can see her struggling not to fidget, or speak, probably biting back a joke to lighten the mood. Atsuii, to your surprise, has moist eyes, and looks almost fearful, as though she worries for what is to come. Lonjiku looks as he almost always does: the very emblem of composure and discipline, spine straight, shoulders back, head poised, and warm gray eyes meeting your own.

"Atsuii has told me what happened in Magnimar, as she understands it." His voice is serious, but very calm. "But I would hear the events as they unfolded for you, from your own lips. I know it is a fearsome thing, to face such things again in the mind, after living them in the body. I would not ask you to do this if it was not of great importance. But I must know the truth, in full. And I must hear from you the name this stranger sought." It seems such a small request, in some ways, just as the stranger himself seemed to be asking such a simple question. But the gravity of your father's voice makes it clear that whatever this name means, it is as important as he suggests.

Rei takes a slow, deep breath. The last two days had been difficult, especially her parent's insistence not to discuss what happened. This alone, was more of a red flag than anything else. Something unlucky but normal - perhaps the man was a mugger - would have been immediately discussed and dealt with but this...this was different.

The two days difference had helped though. While Rei had been initially shaken by the encounter, eventually she had mastered control over her emotions. Ever analytical, she had spent the time thinking about how she could have handled the situation better. No-one was perfect, but in Rei's opinion, wisdom came from learning from past experiences and this was definitely something that she wanted to learn from.

Rei adopts a comfortable kneeling position on a mat in front of Lonjuku, resting on the back of her legs. She avoided the cushions - while comfortable it was difficult to maintenance balance while seated on them. Atsuii had been teaching her last week how to best do this but Rei didn't feel like making a fool of herself today - not in such a serious moment.

"I'm not afraid Father. I remember my lessons, we don't run from Fear - instead we meet it on our own terms."

"Ameiko and I were going to the theater together, but the streets were busy and crowded. We got...separated" Rei remarks, trying to avoid looking in Ameiko's direction. She didn't want to get her sister in trouble and she hoped that the simple fiction might spare her this. Technically though she wasn't lying - they had separated and the streets were crowded, but Rei didn't think telling her parents that they had tried a street race would go down well.[/b]

"I ended up bumping into a man, dressed all in black. He was...wrong somehow, but extremely intimidating. He went on about my manners, as if he expected them to be better, as if he expected more from me somehow. He mentioned that he had traveled far, that he was looking for a friend called Sugimatu. He wanted an address, but of course, the name means nothing to me. I...I remember him being disappointed, he said that it was interesting that I didn't know. He wanted to know who I was, said I reminded him of his daughter - he gave his name as Kite but I consider that a fiction on his behalf - it seemed an untruth to me."

Rei paused for breath for a moment, before rattling off the rest of the situation. "A member of the public intervened, and he learnt that I don't have a father. That seemed interesting to him for some reason. He left and I went to find Ameiko. For some reason, this man followed me down an alley. I...I don't know how he missed me to be honest, he was so close but I was able to hide from him, get Ameiko and return to you. That is mostly the sum as to what happened" she thinks after a moments reflection.

"Why was this man so interested in me personally. The questions he asked are simple in face, and I gave simple responses if pressed, but it was enough to drive him to follow me through a crowd. Its enough for us all to flee as if devils are at our heels instead of informing a guard that there is a creep running around the city. What information am I missing?" she asks, trying to be cool headed and analytical - as by the end of the conversation she felt slightly frustrated at clearly being in the dark about something.

Lonjiku nods with a smile at your response to the idea of fear. "I am glad you remember our lessons, my daughter. The absence of fear is not bravery, but foolishness. The courageous man is the one who stands before fear with a strong heart." It's an old aphorism, one you have heard many times throughout your life, from your first nightmares as a child to even now.

The family sits in silence as you share your tale. Ameiko blinks and shifts her weight when you mask the truth of your race; it is a small tell, but you notice Lonjiku's gaze shift to her for a passing moment in the flickering light. But he does not interrupt your story for chastising or demands of the full truth, and so you hope he will let it go in light of the more important events. And as you share those matters, his face remains as stone, even when Ameiko and Atsuii frown or otherwise react in small ways. For all the world, your father could be a very lifelike statue, a monolith dedicated to the ideology he has instilled in you from birth.

When you finish and turn to questions, he remains silent still, for a long while. His face is cast in shadow for several seconds as he lets his head sink in thought. Finally, he returns his gaze to you, and takes a long, deep breath before speaking.

"There is so much you do not know, Rei. Truths which were best left in the past, hidden away to keep you safe. Secrets which even your parents did not understand in full, for their own safety. But perhaps it was foolish to think such secrets would remain in place. The past cannot be abandoned, or hidden away, and even if you run from it, it will always find you. Rain feeds the rivers, which feed the oceans, which feed the rain." He sighs, and looks to Atsuii. She looks back, and after a long moment, nods, as if signaling some old agreement.

Your father looks back to you and bows slightly--an unusual gesture, almost foreign to you coming from him. "Rei. Tomorrow, you and your sister will venture into the Brinestump Marsh, taking the Old Fish Trail and using the map I will give you. The path will take you to a ship, lost to the swamp in a storm many years ago. You must venture into that ship, and there you may find the answers which you seek. When you return, I will tell you what more that I may."

He takes another deep breath, his shoulders rising and falling behind his downcast head. "You will face a great challenge on this venture, my daughter. But Ameiko will protect you, and I believe your training will guide you as well." He turns his head slightly toward Ameiko. "You know what to do, as well, my daughter. You have also been trained for this moment, though we did not know it would come, and so soon."

"Yes, Father," your sister replies, quietly.

There is another long silence, and though your father's head is still inclined to the ground, hiding his face, you sense he is anticipating a response--questions, acceptance, even argument.

Rei reflects for a moment, thinking hard on Lonjiku's words. She knows every single one would have been chosen very carefully. Lonjiku hadn't answered any of her questions - which was telling and troublesome. It meant that whatever answers he had would be hard to take, believe, follow, or understand. Rei predicted the quest or task - whatever it was - was clearly meant to address this in some way.

"A smart explorer or investigator is a well prepared one - yet flexible enough to adapt depending on the situation. You wouldn't send me out just with Ameiko for company if you were still worried about the man I encountered - not when we left so quickly and suddenly. With that said, there must be some danger otherwise I wouldn't need protecting or face a challenge. So, is there anything that I should know or be aware about? Any hazards or threats that I should be prepared for?"

Rei was tempted to hurl more questions or arguments at her father, demanding more answers but knew that Lonjiku had deliberately given her all the information he was comfortable imparting for now. Demanding clearer answers would be viewed as childish or impolite. Lonjiku always gave everything careful consideration and Rei knew that she had to trust that there was a reason behind this task and completing it would be the fastest way to get satisfaction.

What sort of knowledge check would I roll for Brinestump Marsh / Old Fish Trail? Is it Knowledge Geography or Local? I'm mainly trying to prepare myself for any threats.

Geography, Local, and Nature would all be of potential use here, revealing different sorts of information based on the roll. Also, my apologies for silence yesterday; I was busy with some other stuff that led into this morning.

Your father remains silent after your question, almost as though he didn't hear your words. But finally he speaks, his voice low and almost choked with barely repressed emotion. "Yes. You should know all I can tell you of what you face.

"The ship you will find is an old one, one of three which sailed from a city in the north almost eighteen years ago. It was sailing for Magnimar. From there, the passengers would travel to Sandpoint, a small town on the coast, far from the danger and intrigue of large cities. They were to live here, safe in a quiet town.

"But there were great storms. A wicked thunder and wind which followed them all the way from the city, and struck hard when they approached their destination. In the chaos, they were driven into the Brinestump Marsh, the violent rains flooding passage deep into the swamp. I imagine even in that torrent, the ship was ablaze from lightning strikes, burning as it crashed in the mire. The other ships, I believe, had already sunken into the ocean, claimed by the storms.

"I do not know how many were lost in the storm, how many died in the crash. But I know my brother was aboard that ship, and he kept his guard still when it crashed in the swamp. We had always said that Tsutamu was loyal even beyond death, but we did not imagine how true our statements were. I hope his passing was peaceful, but I know it was not. Only unfinished business or painful death causes a spirit to remain tied to this world, and my brother's skeleton stands guard in that ship to this day, challenging all who would dare to enter."

When Lonjiku raises his head, Atsuii moves a hand atop one of his own, and Ameiko's breath catches. Tears trace the weathered lines of his cheeks, running like streams from his eyes to his jaw. But his voice remains controlled, even harsh. "I know this because I have seen it. I love my brother as I love your parents, Rei. I ventured into that swamp in search of them not long after we came here, when I heard of a blazing ship which passed into the swamp in a storm. But I could not face him, then. Now I realize why. It is your destiny, not mine. For me, that wreck holds only the past. For you, it is your fate."

Your father stands and walks to kneel directly before you, kissing the top of your head as he pulls you into a hug. "This is what must happen, Rei. Perhaps what was always meant to happen. Go to that ship, and find your destiny."

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei's mind rattled with Lonjiku's statements. Finally, pieces of her life were gradually coming together, questions she had longed for answers to finally coming to light. Her parents had been on a ship, travelling from a northern city. Lonjiku's brother had been on board that same ship protecting someone. Rei wondered if her own parents had been guards as well, like Lonjuku's brother - protecting something. Perhaps that was why she had been adopted into the family. She keeps her thoughts to herself though and returns her father's hug.

"I will do you proud father, I will try to ensure that your brother gets the peaceful rest he deserves. I'll set off at first light tomorrow" she remarks honestly. Truthfully, she would have left right away, such was her eagerness to proceed, but Rei held this in check - she had waited years, and she could wait one more night. Rushing out into the darkness was risky - far better to plan and wait."

Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 10 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 10 + (6) = 21

Im ready to track down the shipwreck from first light tomorrow. No worries about silence, I'm moving from one part of the country to another to start a new job so I'm a bit silent too!

"I know you will," Lonjiku says, his voice muffled in your hair. He leans back and lets out a short breath, a smile on his face. "Now rest. We will see you off in the morning." He stands up and bows once more, not deeply, but still a poignant sign of respect. It also signals the end of the family's meeting, and Atsuii stands and quickly hugs you as well. Ameiko seems torn between wanting to make a joke, and the serious tone so far; she settles for a grin and her own hug, whispering into your ear.

"Try to sleep if you can. This will be exciting."

- - - - -

As you lie in bed, you think on what you know of Brinestump Marsh. The swamp is just south of Sandpoint, a murky region of stagnant water pooled in a low point along the Lost Coast, where the ground sinks to the level of the ocean. Multiple paths cross in and out, mostly trails the local fishermen use when brave or desperate enough to venture into the mire. There aren't many reasons to enter the swamp otherwise: a halfling named Walthus Proudstump lives there, the marsh's self-appointed warden, and rumors persist of a witch who dwells in the swamp's depths.

The true dangers of Brinestump are the goblins who make their home there. But even they are little threat these days; the Licktoads are more a nuisance than a true danger, occasionally harassing lone travelers on the Coast Road and scavenging around Sandpoint. A few years ago they were greater trouble, but the mayor and sheriff reinstated the standing bounty for goblin ears, and adventurers and bounty hunters have thinned their numbers. With any luck, you should encounter a few of the little brutes at most, and may even slip past unhindered.

Drifting into sleep, you can only hope that your father's map is accurate enough to show the trail and location of the ship. The swamp is unfamiliar to you, and you know little of its size, shape, or layout. But these are thoughts for the day ahead...

- - - - -

The first rays of the sun peek through your window when you awake, and your door opens, Atsuii standing there with a somewhat sad smile on her face. "Prepare quickly, Rei," she says. "Your sister is getting ready as well, and your father is waiting to see you off, downstairs in the main room. This is truly an exceptional day."

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei wakes when the door opens, groaning slightly. Try as she might, she always struggled to get up early in the morning - despite her adopted family insisting on it. Sleeping in wasted the day they all said - which Rei knew to be technically true, but it didn't make it any easier to get up early.

Rolling out of bed, Rei swiftly dresses, picking an outfit of dark green and brown, the better to blend into marshy areas. She wasn't sure how good her sister would be at acting unseen or hiding, but Rei thought it best to play to her strengths in any case.

Rei prepares her extracts for the day trying to prepare for the most likely challenges she might face. She worries most about what she might actually find today. It was one thing to be wanting answers all her life, but she hoped that she wouldn't be disappointed with what she found. A small, childish part of her wanted to shirk away from the responsibility but after a moment Rei crushed those feelings - it was a weakness and she had long ago learnt not to let such things dictate her actions.

Buckling on her clothing, weapons, and items, Rei heads down the stairs to see her father. Along the way she runs into Ameiko, giving her a quick hug. "Thank you for accompanying me sister. I'll let you be the bait this time" she remarks with a teasing grin.

The bait reference was an old joke. Both sisters liked to strike from the shadows while attention was diverted and both would frequently switch places. On this occasion, Rei wanted to trail a little further behind in case they ran into trouble on the road.

Bounding down the corridor, she heads towards the main room to meet with Lonjiku.

Might as well have a quick ooc discussion about battlefield formation in the near future when Rei is walking with Ameiko (just Ameiko specific for now). I don't know what Ameiko is best at but for this particular exercise, Rei probably probably hangs back 20-30 feet back in the Marsh and tries to move Stealthed when there are no enemies in sight. Its so that if Ameiko meets trouble, she can get a sneak attack and move to flank with her sister. Would this be ok? I still intend to have Rei join and participate with any NPC's we meet on the way / road - its purely for strategy purposes. I can rework if needed.

The first surprise of the day comes as you make your way downstairs, meeting Ameiko in the hall. Your sister has just exited the common room where your family met last night, and she grins and eagerly wraps you into the hug. The surprise, though, is her attire: clothing you've never before seen your sister wear, and didn't know she owned. Ameiko normally dresses in cheerful colors, and even adopts the Varisian styles popular in Sandpoint and the surrounding region. Today, though, she wears a strange, dark outfit, at once close-fitting and loose, with a cloth jacket over the shirt and baggy pants tapering below the knee. In even the dim light of the hallway, it's difficult to separate her form from the shadows, and only her bare face and head made her easy to see.

"I'm almost ready," she says, pulling back and nodding as she looks at your own gear. "Just need to grab the last of my things. I'll be down soon, let mother and father know?" She playfully punches your shoulder. "And I can be the bait, but I'll never get caught. Neither will you, if you keep up." With that, Ameiko laughs and trots back to her room, fading into the shadow almost without effort.

Downstairs in the main room, Lonjiku is already seated at a table, bowls before him filled with rice, eggs, and fish. From the smell and sound of things, Atsuii is already in the kitchen with some of the employees, readying breakfast for the rest of the Rusty Dragon's clients. Your father stands and gestures for you to sit across from him, resuming his seat after you've taken your own. He beams at you, pride clear on his face, and after a long moment of silence he places a scroll tube on the table.

"The map I have is my own creation, and I am sadly not trained in such work. But if you follow the trail, and keep an eye out for the marks I provided, you should reach the ship without much struggle. Hopefully, the landmarks have not changed greatly since I ventured in there. But it was a long time ago. You and your sister should be ready for danger, either way."

He sighs and looks toward the stairs. "Speaking of her, I suppose she is still getting ready? I know I said Ameiko would protect you, but I would also ask that you protect her. Atsuii taught her many things, and I hope my own training has helped her, but... Well, I'm sure you know her as well as I do. You will keep each other safe, I know."

We can stay in this scene for a bit longer if there's anything you want to do, say, or ask, but feel free to post moving on to the swamp. It's not a long walk to its borders and the trail you want to use, but from there going gets a little more odd. I'll need a Survival check for navigation, and Stealth if you want to try moving without drawing attention. Also let me know what pace you want to set for the exploration, in a general sense (going slowly to keep hidden, trying to get there as quick as possible, somewhere in the middle, whatever you like).

As far as battlefield formation, that sounds fine. Ameiko is also stealthy and quiet, so she'd just as soon move hidden herself, but having a little distance between you does mean that even if one is spotted the other might get the jump on any threats. And I fully expect strategy and tactics to change over time based on developments and circumstances.

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei raises an eyebrow at her sister. "You look amazing sister! When I'm a super rich performer I'll be sure to invest in some black attire similar to yours"

Basically the style of clothing Rei is visualizing

Laughing at Ameiko's quick tongue she heads down the stairs, seeing Lonjiku already present and waiting for her. Rei wastes no time in digging into the food in front of her father - it wasn't that she was particularly hungry but it was good food and she couldn't be certain when her next meal would be. Besides, it was fuel and Rei knew that she would need much of it on the journey ahead.

Rei reverently opens up the scroll tube, tracing its contours as she examines it. Rei always appreciated old documents - history and spends a good few minutes listening to her father while taking in as much of the map as she could.

"Yes, Ameiko is just getting the last of her things - she should be down presently. You shouldn't worry father, Ameiko and I know how to play to each others strengths and we fight together well. We should be able to keep each other safe against some of the likely threats we might face."

Rei makes conversation with Lonjiku while she waits for Ameiko but she is distracted as she does so , preoccupied with the task ahead.

I'm happy enough to move towards or into the swamp. I don't have any ranks in Survival yet though - its one of the (many) skills I still want to put ranks into but dont yet have the spare skill points. If Ameiko is just as talented as Stealth as I am, then by all means have Rei be the bait and Ameiko stay hidden - I only suggested Rei stay hidden because I knew for certain she had points in Stealth! As for pace, I imagine on any busy roads there isn't any need for stealth so they move at a good pace but when the roads get isolated or quiet that's probably when Rei and Ameiko exercise caution / stealth. SO probably straddling a balance between speed and stealth, using speed in area's where threats / ambushes are low and caution when Rei feels unsafe or at risk.

Survival: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Ameiko only laughs at your comment; she knows you well enough to imagine what you're picturing. "And I'll be sure to make sure it actually does something instead of look good."

- - - - -

Your father smiles as you tell him not to worry. "You should tell the river to stop flowing, while you say such things." He shakes his head, and eats his food and makes a little conversation with you as you wait--mostly comments on how the weather looks fair for your adventure, and hopes that you won't have any troubles on the road. Before long, Ameiko makes her entrance, now with a small pack for supplies, and a few carefully placed straps with pouches on her person. She eagerly sits down to eat, and Lonjiku gives her a similar overview of the map.

Once everyone is done eating, your father leads you to the door, where he hugs each of you in turn, and offers a brief prayer of protection to your ancestors. "The time has come," he says in Minkaian. "Your naginata are polished and waiting outside. May the heavens guide and protect you as I have, and see you home safely with much to tell."

Indeed, resting against the door are two naginata, their blades gleaming in the sun. You recognize both: your own weapon, and Ameiko's. She deftly snatches it, gives it a flourish, and points it toward the south road. "Let's go, Rei! Destiny awaits!"

- - - - -

The road to Brinestump Marsh is well traveled and patrolled; you see two of Sandpoint's guards in just your short trip. The pair give you a peculiar look, obviously unused to seeing young women with such equipment, but they only make small talk and pass by. Based on your father's map and instructions, you're making for the Old Fish Trail, which begins further afield from Sandpoint than the newer path the fishermen use.

So it is perhaps an hour after your depart that you stand at the beginning of the trail, looking over the marsh. Brinestump is set much lower than the surrounding coast, surrounded by a cliff of nearly forty feet; even the tips of the trees are below you. The trail winds along the cliff as it descends to the swamp's level. Ameiko takes the lead, picking a careful path along the unused walkways. The going is not as fast as on the Coast Road, but the trail has held up well enough over the years, and it isn't long before you reach the bottom.

Brinestump is a place unlike any you have visited before: the atmosphere is oppressive, the smell overwhelming, the sounds of wildlife constant. The air is thick and hot, even in this morning, and Ameiko is already wiping sweat from her brow as you stand at the entrance. She glances back at you and nods. "I guess now's the time to start moving quietly. Make sure you can see me, I'll keep an eye on you. I think maybe neither of us should be the bait today."

Lonjiku's map shows you to follow the trail for most of its distance into the swamp, turning off to the west as it nears its end. You and your sister move through the undergrowth to each side of the path, near enough to see one another in glimpses through the green, but only because you know to look for one another. As you near the turning point, though, you hear some noise from around a bend in the trail, and when you draw nearer, you see the source.

Four goblins are set in the path, probably meant to be guarding it. Only two look like they're doing much of a job at that, vaguely looking around at their surroundings. The others look to be watching a pair of frogs hop about, and yell and hiss in their own tongue, as though engaged in some incomprhensible game. Occasionally one of the others will turn to look at them.

The goblins wouldn't be an issue... except that Ameiko is on the wrong side of the trail to split off from it. You see your sister pause, and she stands up slightly as though to try silently asking you whether to engage. But when she does so, one of the goblins looks up from the frogs, and the timing is just right for him to see her duck back down. It gestures with its spear and croaks out something, and the others begin readying themselves as well...

We're about to enter combat! You have a surprise round on the goblins; I don't like the limitation to standard actions on those, so feel free to take a full round worth of actions. As a side note on dice rolls: Always feel free to look at the spoilers for them that I include. For the sake of transparency, I will roll everything on here, always; for the sake of secrecy, I don't include enemy dice modifiers, and sometimes won't even label the dice in the final post. I'll also roll certain things for you reflexively to keep up pacing, unless you'd prefer to roll everything yourself--as this is a solo game, I'm fine with that, so just let me know.

I also prefer theater of the mind for combat, favoring the player in case of things being unclear. Right now, you are easily within a move and attack of the goblins--the undergrowth is difficult terrain, so you can't charge them, but that doesn't prevent an attack of any kind this round. Also always feel free to let me know if you want to try something unorthodox or outside of the usual rules, because I'm happy to work with you to make combat dynamic and fun, so long as it sort of makes sense. (And flourishes with no mechanical effect are always allowed, so have fun with descriptions!)

I'm all good for you rolling some things for me personally :)

Rei feels a slight pang of disappointment as the goblins reach for their weapons. While obviously a pest, she had no real fear or hatred of the goblins but on the other hand, she wasn't going to stand idly by while they moved towards her sister with weapons in hand.

Swiftly moving forward, Rei opens up combat against the nearest goblin with an overland looping slash, twirling like a dancer as she does so to pick up maximum speed. Rei feels little resistance against her blade as she attempts to cleanly slice the goblin apart.

Her strike complete, Rei swiftly withdraws the blade in a brief flourish, before whipping the blade into a complex web of near liquid metal. Only Rei's family would recognize the move for what it was - the ready stance of Rei's chosen combat style: Dapaav - created by Rei to maximize speed of the wielder and the practitioners blade in combat. At its peak level of mastery, Rei hoped to eventually have her blade speed advance to the level where her blade would almost move almost too fast to see individually - but she wasn't there yet.

Sneak Attack (if Goblin is Flat-Footed): 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5

Your burst from the brush is as unexpected as it is graceful and deadly; the goblin before you does not even seem to notice your presence, let alone defend itself. The blade of your naginata deftly slices across the back of the goblin's skull, biting deep through bone and the muscle of its shoulders and back; it collapses with barely a shriek.

Across from you, Ameiko responds swiftly as well. She steps forward with a swift kick, launching a clump of dirt and growth at the nearest goblin to her, but it goes wide and the goblin is unfazed. The quick slash which follows is graceful at its start, but your sister missteps, probably losing her footing in the unusual terrain of the swamp; her own naginata sweeps high, and the goblin is able to knock it aside with its sword.

As the goblins move to counterattack, however, the main advantage of the naginata comes into play: its reach, enabling you to quickly respond to assailants as they move to strike. The goblin which deflected Ameiko's attack steps forward, and in that moment she spins her weapon about in another slash, this time catching the creature's throat; it falls with a burbling groan. You yourself are attacked by the spear-wielder, who attempts to lunge in, but that move leaves it open to strike. You had best strike true, for you can see in that moment that the goblin's spear will pierce your side if you do not strike it down.

The final goblin still standing moves for Ameiko, dashing in while she cuts down its fellow. Without time to respond, she can only attempt to dodge back, but her footing is still imperiled, and the goblin's sword draws a slice across one arm, bringing a hiss from your sister.

In Summary: If you don't kill the goblin with your attack of opportunity against it, you will suffer 6 damage from its attack. Ameiko has taken 4 from the goblin attacking her. It's now your turn; there are two goblins still standing (one on your turn, if your AoO kills the one attacking you.)

Rei retreats slightly under the second goblins onslaught, spotting the counterattack coming and knowing that the marsh would restrict her movements to evade. Not trusting her ability to deal a critical blow to prevent the attack coming, Rei instead strikes out with her blade, flicking her wrist as she did so, trying to Disarm the strike before it happens.

Disarm: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Rei doesn't waste time after the attack though, immediately Studying the goblin before stepping into her front foot, spotting how the goblin moved, how he attacked, trying to maximize the inevitable opening. She spots it, and strikes out, trying to cut it down and thus bring the combat down to a close.

Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 1 = 18

As the goblin thrusts forward with its spear, you twist your naginata, the blade dipping to catch the weapon and twist it aside. The goblin is just quick enough to avoid the attempt, however, and it shifts to one side as it drives in. You have to twist yet further to one side to avoid the worst of the blow, and you feel the pain of the spearhead scraping on your mail shirt. It did not draw blood, but you're sure to have a bruise, and you don't know how often you'll be able to keep up dodges like that.

With such concern in mind, you focus in, and with a careful step to keep the goblin at the right distance for your weapon, you bring it about as the little beast raises its spear. But you watched how it stepped, saw the angle of its defense before it was even begun. Your naginata catches a stray spot of sun, gleaming in a flash of deadly steel, and the goblin collapses to the ground, a terrible slash across its chest.

Across from you, Ameiko likewise steps back from the goblin before her, making enough space to properly use her naginata. She brings it about in a whirling flourish, simultaneously swaying back and forth on her feet. You recognized the technique, one she has shown you before as a way to use misdirection and stealth even in an open fight. The goblin falls for the trap, lunging where your sister is not, and directly where her naginata sweeps to strike. The goblin's body drops to the ground, and its head rolls away into the underbrush.

Just like that, the battle is ended. The only sounds are those of the swamp, and the breathing of you and Ameiko. After several long moments, she twists her naginata with a quick motion, flicking goblin blood from its blade, and then she looks to you, pulling down the wrap from her face to reveal a grin. "That was well done!"

Rei grins back as she lets the adrenaline fade slightly after the fight. "That was well fought sister, excellent moves" she remarks, before bending down and searching all four of the goblin bodies, checking to see if there was anything of value. Rei didn't like the idea of grave robbing but it wasn't as if the goblins had any use for their items anymore and you never knew what items might end up saving your life down the line.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Finishing her inspection, Rei stands in a swift motion, sheathing her blade in one single movement. "We should exercise caution in pushing onwards. Those goblins looked like they were guarding something, which probably means they were taking orders from someone. Its possible that there could be more goblins around." she finishes, before heading down the trail, determined to cover as much ground as she could before night came.

Goblins are not known for carrying much of value, and these are no exception. In the fighting, the frogs hopped off into the foliage, and there are few belongings to be had among the bodies still present. The weapons of the goblins are crude and rusted, little more than junk even if they were serviceable in a fight. Any pockets are filled with rubbish, and the one item which catches your interest--a rolled scrap of parchment--proves only to be a crude drawing of one goblin sitting on another's head.

Ameiko stands watch as you search the bodies, scanning both paths of the trail as well as the underbrush around. She nods at your words. "Father's map doesn't show anything dangerous here, does it? It could be one of the changes since he's been here." She frowns and peers down the trail in the direction you were headed. "We turn off here, don't we? I think I prefer moving with some cover."

The map indeed shows your trail continuing off of the more beaten and established path, and the two of you slip into the greenery to continue your journey. Your travel is slower now, as you move into the thicker growth away from the Fishing Trail. The air is even warmer and damper, and the insects grow thicker with the trees and vines. On more than one occasion, you have to avoid large pools of standing water, or else wade through and accept the disgusting sensation as the stagnant swamp water soaks into your clothing.

It is good you set out early in the morning, however, as you guess it must be noon or later when you finally come close enough to see the ship before you. It is clearly a vessel meant for travel, far larger than the fishing boats you've seen in Sandpoint. It is also very old and worn from its appearance: moss and vines grow across the weathered, rotted hull. From where you first see it, there are no identifying markings, nor do you see an entrance.

Ameiko crouches beside you and wipes her brow before nudging your shoulder. "That must be it. How do you want to approach?"

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei raises an eyebrow at the scrap of parchment. "I see goblins have the same refined sense of humor as I have heard about" she remarks in a dry tone before discarding the drawing and moving up the trail.

As the ship comes into view, Rei takes her time observing it in silence for a few moments. A old ship was a good sign, but was not necessarily proof of anything.

"I'd feel better if we circled the ship first to start with. Even if there is no direct entrance, nature might have made one for us - see the wood rotting? If we should be so fortunate, I'd prefer to not hide our presence. Even if Tsutamu has chosen unlife, it was done out of loyalty to his charge - he would respect someone brave and honorable enough to meet him face to face rather than sneaking around in the hope of avoiding him - or at least I hope so" Rei finishes with a wry smile.

After a moments reflection, Rei takes out a chemical vial before drinking it - sharpening her reflexes.

"Are you ready to proceed Sister?"

Drinking Heightened Awareness extract. Its probably a good time to drink my Shield extract as well, but I might need to save that for when (if) I'm in combat so I'll hold off since its duration would be pretty short.

Apologies for the wait.

Ameiko nods at your question, and moves with you to begin circling the ship. The vessel itself sits in something of a clearing, the ground covered in standing water with moss, algae, lilypads, and general scum across the surface--and probably more than a handful of wildlife dwelling within. All around, though, the foliage is still thick, and you move between trees and brush to keep some distance as you examine the ship.

Circling gives you a better sense of the structure as a whole, and reveals that it is even more damaged than the first sight suggested. The whole ship leans precariously to one side; the railing on the edge near the ground is perhaps a foot or two from the surface of the water, and you could probably climb aboard if you swam to the right spot. The masts and rigging are all missing, rotted away or broken off before the ship came to rest here. The whole thing is badly weathered and rotted away, and looks like it might be precarious at best should you enter.

Perception DC 15:
The ship is clearly damaged, but looking closely, you notice markings here and there that tell a story beyond just rotting in the swamp. The base of the center mast is still visible on the ship's deck, and it looks like the thick wood was broken off several feet from the deck's surface. But if it were broken in the swamp, you'd expect to see the mast nearby, or at least for it to have snapped higher up. And the break looks like the mast would have been hit from one side, not head-on from colliding with trees.

DC 20 Additional Info

Spoiler:
Looking at the ship as a whole, but especially on deck, you notice another oddity. Even in the few spots where the wood hasn't been covered in moss or rotted away, it looks discolored: blackened, almost as if by fire.

Moving to the opposite side, you can see the largest factors of the ship's current resting place. A large boulder and thick, rotted stump, quite near one another, rise to a large, jagged hole in the ship's hull. Apparently, the ship crashed into them as it came to this location; there's even a long strip of slightly raised moss and dirt that suggests the remains of the fallen tree. Thankfully, you shouldn't have to do more than wade through very shallow water should you wish to enter through that hole, and not even that if you step with care and grace.

Dangling from a spot near the railing above the hole is a weathered bronze nameplate. It's been marked heavily with age, but it remains intact enough that you can make out the ship's name if you look closely: The Kaijitsu Blossom.

Yay

Rei glances at the ship, trying to burn all the details she can spot into her mind. She was so close to getting answers but she wasn't going to rush things without thinking things through. There was always, always a good option somewhere and only with a clear mind would it become obvious

"This ship has possibly been caught in a storm...or maybe just experienced its fair share of combat - you can tell by where the mast was snapped but furthermore you can see blackened wood. I'd speculate either elemental magic or perhaps an unfortunate lighting strike" Rei observes quietly after a moment. "Maybe both combat and stormy weather happened. The ship also shares your...our family name sister. This seems to be the correct place. I'd prefer entering through the hull. If you wish to flank anything that might be making this shipwreck home feel free to swim through the swamp and enter via the railing..but I'd prefer to avoid splitting up on this occasion. I'd prefer to avoid the railing myself - I never like to disturb unknown waters and besides looking like a drowned rat is rather unbecoming - among other things."

Ready to explore, but if its unclear, entering via the tree stump / rock hole while stepping delicately to avoid disturbing the water just in case something aquatic likes to chill out there.

"I agree. I've got nothing against swimming, but I'd hate to make anything angry by barging through their home. And someone needs to make sure you don't take a wrong step getting in there." She stands slightly and peers at the ship. "I think you're right, that thing looks really beat up. And so quiet... I don't like it. But I'll be right behind you."

The two of you approach the hole in the ship's side--closer to its bottom, you can tell as you get closer, as you better see the rotted remains of the keel. Clambering in is somewhat difficult, especially with your armor, but Ameiko's help keeps you from slipping or stepping in the wrong place--your sister's always had an eye for this sort of thing. The stump offers some holds that allow you to climb onto the rock, which itself is large enough for you to stand on and peer into the ship before entering.

The interior is dark, with the only light coming from the large hole and a few cracks and breaks here and there. The sun is already filtered through the trees, and so the inside of the ship is very dark, and you have trouble seeing more than a few feet in detail. What you can make out is more weathered timbers and damage, although not nearly as much as the outside; the wood just at the entrance is heavily worn, but even within your short range of sight, you can see the growth ends, moss giving way to plain wood.

The inside of the ship is also far colder than the swamp outside. The air, which smells of must and salt and sawdust, feels the way you imagine a tomb might. It's clammy and uncomfortable, and has an ominous sense about it.

Ameiko steps up behind you and peers in as well, frowning at the darkness. "Do you have anything for light? I think I brought a sunrod, I can strike it if you like."

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei looks slightly guilty, and flushes a bit, irritated with herself. "Yes, I think we will need the sunrod. It was extremely silly of me to not bring one along, I'll have to craft you a replacement one after all of this" she remarks - glad that Ameiko had at least prepared better than she had. With an available light, Rei weaves deeper into the ship, staying on high alert for any sort of danger or threat.

Ameiko nods, and sets her naginata against the ship's hull as she swings her pack around. You suspect that she'd normally give a quip about forgetfulness, but your sister is unusually serious and nervous, as she has been since you found the ship. Ameiko is on edge, whether from the ominous air or something else, but she keeps the sunrod steady after striking, and holds it high as you step into the entrance.

The interior of the ship is remarkably well preserved: the timbers are weathered and worn in places, but you can immediately tell it is the markings of use, not neglect. Between the ship's resting place against the boulder, and its being half-sunk in the water and mud, the floor is uneven, angling down away from you at an awkward slope that will make movement precarious inside. But you keep your feet as you enter, and look up as you hear the sound of a sword being drawn.

Standing some twenty feet away from you is a skeleton with burning red orbs in its empty eye sockets. It wears an armor like that you've seen only in old books and scrolls about Minkai: a mixture of mail like your own shirt, interspersed with laminated plates, which hangs from its bony frame in worn tatters, rust scored across its surface. The skeleton bears a short sword in one hand, a curved wakizashi with a blade that shines in the sunrod's light, unaffected by the wearing of time. As you watch, the skeleton's jaw clacks up and down, though no sound can be heard apart from the chatter of the teeth as they come together.

Sense Motive DC 15:
The motions of the mouth are not random chattering: it looks a good deal like speech. You can't hope to guess what the skeleton is saying, but between the "talking" and the gesture it makes with the sword, you get the sense that it's issuing a challenge.

Rei observes the skeleton for a moment, a little upset that she cannot effectively communicate with it. Still, she recognizes the challenge and nods her head in agreement. She smoothly drinks her Shield Extract, and [i]Studies[i] her opponent as she hefts her weapon, standing into her custom fighting stance and observes her opponent with a serious and solemn look, before giving a short bow of respect.

AC is 24. Studied Target is also in effect. This uses both my Standard and Move action I guess as preparation.

As you prepare yourself for combat, the skeleton allows you time to act. It raises the sword in a serious gesture, and shifts its feet and blade into its own fighting stance. After similarly bowing, a long moment passes, Ameiko standing tensely behind you. Who will make the first strike?

A moment later, it becomes apparent that it is your foe, as it dashes forward, closing the gap between you with surprising speed for one of the undead. The quickness of its motion means you're able to offer only a hasty swipe as it comes within range of your naginata, and the clash of steel on steel rings as its own blade parries yours. The wakizashi is an arc of silver lightning in the glare of the sunrod, and it slashes in toward your abdomen in a flash. Fortunately, though, that first slash is more quick than powerful--you feel it scrape across the mail of your shirt, but you are unharmed.

You're up! Ameiko is prepared to let this play out as a duel, unless you ask her to step in, or it looks like you're about to be defeated.

Rei curses slightly for her slower reactions as the skeleton charges, opening with a simple slashing attack. The attack was quick - almost lightning quick, but its lack of power opened Rei's opponent up toward an easy counter attack while he was unbalanced.

Disarm Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28

Her response was a careful flick of the wrist, not laced with power, as Lonjiku had taught her not to be heavy handed with such attacks. With a sharp rap of her blade, she aims to send the wakizashi spinning out of the skeletons hands. She finishes with her adopted fathers trademark flourish, before before trying to pick the blade up or kick it away in a smooth motion.

"My name is Rei, and my adopted father is Lonjiku Kaijitsu. Please, you have served your time here honorably, accept a peaceful rest."

Your father has taught you well, and your naginata is true. The quick movement of your feet puts you in the perfect position, and the flick of your wrist works your blade up and around the wakizashi until a sharp rap knocks it from the creature's hands. You flourish the blade in a show of skill and easily slide the sword behind you, hoping that it effectively ends the fight. The skeleton, however, appears ready to continue with its very clawed fingers... until you speak.

Between the brevity of your speech and the emotionless mask of the skull, it is difficult to tell what words bring the greatest reaction from the skeletal defender. Your own name certainly gives it some pause, but when you mention Lonjiku, it stands entirely still, arms still raised, caught as if frozen in motion. Finally, it drops its arms, and the red orbs seem to dull slightly in its eye sockets. The jaw works up and down for several seconds, again in imitation of speech, and it bows deeply, then kneels before you in a ritual fashion. It looks up at you and gestures to the wakizashi, then raises its hands palm up, as if seeking the sword returned to it.

Sense Motive DC 20:
You sense not only no animosity from the skeleton--this doesn't seem to be a trick--but somehow, even sorrow, guilt. Perhaps even some level of relief, probably brought on by those very feelings. Whatever the case, you doubt the skeleton means to use the sword to harm you.

Knowledge (nobility) DC 20:
It takes a moment to realize what's happening, since the skeleton cannot speak or show emotion well, but you have seen this--or heard a description of it--before. The ritual pose, requesting its blade back in this manner. It appears that Tsutamu is seeking seppuku, even in his undead state. But perhaps such an act would grant him peace.

Rei cannot get entirely much of a read on the skeleton, but she had read about that ritual pose before. She knew what it represented, and therefore didn't see much of a threat from the skeleton.

After a moments reflection, she elegantly sheathes her blade, bending to pick up the blade before flourishing it, letting it catch the dim light from Ameiko's sunrod.

"This is a beautiful blade. After so much time, you can see how sharp the blade it - it hasn't dulled. Look at the purity of the metal, how it shimmers like silver lightning as it glides through the air. Its been extremely well maintained."

Rei pauses for a moment, before bowing, holding the blade out towards the skeleton, hilt first.

"Its a reflection of your honor, its never faded, never dulled, and its dazzling to look at. Its only right for you to have it by your side" she finishes solemnly before looking at Ameiko.

"Sister, I consider us family but I'm not technically family by blood. Do you have anything you wish to add that might be better suited coming from you than me?" she asks, unsure if Ameiko would get a better time.

Ameiko had been simply looking on as you hand the sword back to the skeleton. Tsutamu takes the weapon without a sign of threat, and leans forward, placing it on the floor before him, carefully angled so it won't slide away. Your sister watches with a curious, solemn expression, and shakes her head. "I barely remember him, I was very small when I last saw him. But I always knew my uncle Tsutamu was a true samurai, devoted and honorable. I'm sure he did all he could to defend your parents and their secrets. Now, he has offered his final service to their daughter." She looks at you directly with a sad smile. "I imagine he would be honored if you were his second, in life. To slash the neck and make his passing swift."

The skeleton kneels silently for a time, as if in prayer. Eventually, it takes up the sword, but instead of performing the act, it grasps at the hilt and, using its sharp fingerbones, presses the mekugi pins from the hilt. It slides the handgrip from the tang of the blade, and tilts it over one hand, shaking until a small, tightly coiled strip of paper falls out. This, it unrolls and places before it; in the light, you can make out a lengthy scrawl of writing in Minkaian lettering, although you can't read what it says. From your knowledge of the act, you imagine it would be Tsutamu's final words: a death poem, and perhaps a message.

This complete, the skeleton reattaches the grip to its wakizashi, and grips the weapon in both hands, the blade positioned just under its ribcage. It stares ahead, the light already fading from its skull, and then plunges the blade toward its own spine, drawing it across and up in a swift, violent motion that scrapes the blade against one of its ribs. It jerks forward only slightly, as if the memory or symbol of pain is being repressed. As the last of the red light disappears in its sockets, it raises the wakizashi once more, balanced on both raised palms, clearly offering you the blade as the soul departs from the long-dead body.

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei nods seriously at Ameiko's request, and watches the skeleton patiently. She watches the blade slide into the rib cage and the unlife die out from the skeleton's red eyes. Rei bows again in response to it offering her its blade, taking a single step forward and taking the offered blade - honoring its final request.

If he would have wished me to slash the neck down at this point I can (and wouldn't mind) doing so, but I'm unsure if thats required at this point of undeath.

Rei's eyes glisten a little with moisture before wiping her eyes. "He was a loyal man, in life and in death". She bends, taking the slip of paper up from off the ground and attempts to read what it says. She hadn't missed Ameiko slipping a little and mentioning that Tsutamu defended her parents, but it seemed rude for an interrogation so swiftly after the skeleton had left jer families aparent service.

In this case, it doesn't seem necessary to perform the second strike; the fading light makes it clear that his unlife is ending quickly here, and given that as a skeleton he can't feel physical pain, it wouldn't do much practically. You honor him enough by allowing the act and accepting his offered sword.

As you take the wakizashi from Tsutamu's skeletal hands, the body drops to the floor. It isn't a sprawling collapse, but almost graceful, in a way, simply a final release of the energy that had kept it more than so many bones. As it lands, the scabbard for the wakizashi rolls from its belt, coming to rest at your feet.

Holding the blade, you can see how well-made it is, and how untouched by time. The grip itself is more damaged, worn and cracked, and you can easily see through one split the hollow space where the paper was hidden in its pommel. Etched along the shining blade is a scene of seven birds perched on a coiling branch, and a brief message at its base: Honor in Service.

The scroll of paper, when you examine it closely, is clearly two separate writings, although both in the same hand. The first, as you may have guessed, is a brief death poem; the second, however, is a message.

Tsutamu's Death Poem:
Had I not known
that I was dead
already
I would have mourned
my loss of life.

Tsutamu's Message:
Lonjiku, my brother. I am sorry that I will not see you again in this life. But I die knowing I have helped to defend the honor and secrecy of our lord. The line must continue. That duty rests on you and your own family, now.

We know now that the opening of the warding box was foolish. I have no anger for our lord and what he did, only anger for myself, that I did not properly think of the danger and prepare him. In secrets we find safety, but blindness leads to ruin. I know this now. We should not have kept our ward in darkness. It forced him to seek that which we should have made clear. It is with shame that I think of how we reacted--the words I spoke--and the way we hid the truth. I have apologized to my lord already. Now I voice my apology to the gods, the ancestors, and to you, in the hope you will find this message.

I left Brinewall two days ago, and I hope we left the danger behind us. I had hoped our many enemies had forgotten us, that they had given up the search for our lord and the contents of the box. But they have pursued us. The Storms which now assail us are no stranger to me, and you would know them from our father's stories. I do not believe we will survive long on this ocean, and I only hope our final deception will be enough to fool their wicked minds.

The box is not here. You need not look for it. I ensured it returned to Kortun's care, and that it would remain secreted in the third vault of Brinewall Castle. I pray it is obscured from our enemies' gaze, and my heart tells me that Shizuru will make it so. My lord and his wife also remained there, after I told him the truth of what he would face. They wished to die with honor, not allowing their enemies to hunt them down and slaughter them like beasts. I wish I had convinced them otherwise, but our lord made me proud with his honor and wisdom. If they ran, we would be pursued once more. But if they are found, and the box hidden, the Storms may finally cease.

Now, it falls to you, Lonjiku, and the heir you have hidden yet. Do not make the same errors as I made, as father made. Tell her the truth, raise her to know the secrecy and the reason why. The Storms pursue us now because they seek the warding box and the seal within. I do not know if they suspect a living heir. But I know that the longer we run, the longer they will chase. Destiny cannot be avoided; the time has come to stand and face our enemies.

I pray I will see you, but I know I will not live to tell you this myself. I hide this letter in the handle of my blade, where I know you will find it. It will survive; it is a fine sword, my Whispering Shrike. Even if I die on the sea, the winds will carry it to you, I know.

Honor in Service.
Kaijitsu Tsutamu

Knowledge (History) DC 15:
The date on the letter suggests that it was written using the Imperial Calendar, which began 2,500 years before the Absalom Reckoning more common in Varisia and Avistan at large. Converting the date would mean the letter was written seventeen years ago, and you recall stories of Brinewall-- a colony city to the north--being razed by unknown forces around that same time.

Rei carefully opens the letter, reading it quickly, committing details to memory before handing the letter to Ameiko.

"It says that you should tell me the truth, and the perils of keeping the truth from someone - I assume the letter refers to my father" Rei replies shortly with a trace of irritation in her tone. She didn't begrudge her adopted family much - she knew that they meant well and in hindsight had probably made the right decision to keep her in the dark for as long as they did - but that didn't mean that she was pleased about it.

"Assuming I have this right, so far I know that Tsutamu served a lord - and I'm assuming this to be my father. My father was in the dark about something, and opened a box, something that drew some enemies referred to as the Storm down on them. Tsutamu left to draw them away, pretending he had the box, I was hidden, and my parents stayed in Brinewall to ensure the enemies would stop hunting for the box...and maybe me. It appears to have been successful as Brinewall was destroyed about 17 years ago, and I have been kept safely hidden ever since. It doesn't tell me what this box is or why my parents were being hunted - an entire city being razed to the ground is no small amount of resources - someone wanted this box very badly."

When you hand the letter to Ameiko, she quickly begins to read over it herself. Her eyes widen, and she looks to you with more than a few emotions clear on her face. Sorrow, surprise, worry, but also her own confusion and irritation. As she continues reading and listening to you--a skill you've known for years your sister possesses--she nods, biting her lip as her brow creases further and further. Finally, she looks up at you again, and takes a moment working her mouth, trying to find the right words.

"I think you're right, Rei. But if I tell you the truth, I don't really know everything myself. I don't know if any of us do. Father and Mother can tell you more than I can, but I know that you were hidden. You were just a baby, and I was very young, but I remember a little of coming to Sandpoint. Our family was always worried, then. Father and Mother were very intent on opening the Dragon, but they were also worried all the time. I think it's because of this. The Storms were so close to finding us, all of us." She shakes her head. "But I never knew how close, or what happened. I knew Uncle Tsutamu went missing, along with your parents, but Father never said exactly what happened until last night, right before you came to the room."

The sunrod flares in your sister's hand, and she raises it high, looking around the boat. The deck you stand on is mostly devoid of anything useful. Even as you watch, the moss and rot is beginning to spread from the entrance to the rest of the interior, growing across the boards. Whatever magic or spirit was maintaining the inside of the ship seems to have passed on with its protector.

"We should get going, I don't know how safe this ship is going to be soon. It doesn't seem like there's anything left here, anyway." Ameiko looks outside, and then back to you. "When we get home, Father will tell you--tell us--everything. I think the letter will convince him. And we'll make sure of it, too. You and me--right?"

Rei considers things for a moment before agreeing with Ameiko, nodding in acceptance.

"I think we should leave, it looks like it might not stay stable much longer, and besides, I want to speak with Father after this letter. Do you think Tsutamu will want his remains here, at the site of his long vigil, or be brought back to his family for any proper preparations?" she asks thoughtfully.

Do you think Tsutamu will want his remains here, at the site of his long vigil, or be brought back to his family for any proper preparations?" she asks thoughtfully.

Your sister shakes her head. "He's spent so many years here since his death, protecting this place. I think he would want to stay." She places a hand on your shoulder and smiles. "You did a wonderful thing here, Rei. You turned what he probably thought to be his greatest failure into success. You honor him by accepting his sword and bearing his final words."

She looks around and sighs. "But I agree, it's time to go. I'm sure Father will want to talk to you when we return." She steps back outside, nimbly finding her footing as she helps you with descending from the ship.

The journey out of Brinestump is little quicker than your travels within, although you can move with a little more speed along the trails if you wish. The climb back up the cliff path, however, is slow going, and the sun is falling in the sky by the time you find yourself on the Coast Road, returning north to Sandpoint, offering a dazzling sunset when you reach home.

Your return to the Rusty Dragon is met with some curious looks from the patrons, and a warm welcome from one of the servers, who also calls to let your parents know you've come back. Both seem joyous and relieved to see you, and wrap you and your sister in warm, tight hugs. Atsuii whispers in your ear as she holds you close. "We were so worried. We both knew you would be fine, but even so... And Lonjiku is so proud. He may not say it, but he is."

Lonjiku himself uses his typical restraint, although his own hug is filled with silent affection. "We will meet tonight, as we did yesterday, at the family shrine. Bring whatever you have found, and tell us of everything you have seen and heard. For now, rest and refresh. Atsuii will bring you food and drink." He brings you close and kisses the top of your head, ignoring any grime from your adventure.

Once more, after sundown, Ameiko comes to your room and knocks. Tonight, however, she is openly grinning, and seems much more excited than anxious. The scene in the common room is much the same, as well: your parents sitting on their cushions, another placed for you. The air in the room is still thick with anticipation, and the candles cast their shadows across the walls. Lonjiku bows slightly, indicating for you to speak your tale.

While the journey hadn't been a backbreaking distance, Rei was still relieved to be home safely. She still didnt know all the circumstances involved, but she did worry about some unseen enemy or threat tracking her. Being home surrounded by family ensured she was able to relax a bit more, and avoid being on edge.

Spotting the curious looks from the patrons, Rei immediately heads over and assists with serving the patrons with food and drink. She also attempts to trial some of her choreography in a simple dance by way of entertainment. The entire purpose of this, was to reassure anyone watching or onlooking that nothing much was wrong - that the curiosity would die down or be quickly forgotten about. Rei was being nothing if not careful.

At sundown, Rei noticed the change in her sisters mood since the previous day. She heavily suspected that there had been conversations behind her back but chose not to pass comment. Ameiko no doubt had much cause to be thrilled and excited about something, and Rei knew that she would learn this in time. She sits in an identical position and location that she did previously, keeping her attention fixed on her adopted parents.

"I won't go into too much length on the various details, but Ameiko and I were able to find the ship without too much difficulty - save for a small group of goblins in the area that we were able to dispatch without much trouble. The ship had been badly damaged, with evidence that its mast had been been broken side on - not by any nearby trees as part of its shipwreck. The ship was also blackened - perhaps by fire damage. Ameiko and I managed to enter the ship safely, and met Tsutamu - in the form of an undead skeleton. His skill with a blade was remarkable - no doubt I would have been outskilled had he been flesh and blood - but I was able to disarm and prevail against him in single combat - a trial of honor as it were. Tsutamu chose to meet an honorable end at his own hands, with his own blade, and he was able to finally enjoy the peace and eternal rest he deserved for his long service. He offered me his blade, with a note as his final act" Rei finished smoothly, drawing the blade, showing her father the secret compartment where the note was stored, as well as the blade, offering it for him to take. Technically, she felt that the blade should stay within the family in many respects and that Lonjiku might have some opinion on it.

"Feel free to read the note in its entirety, but I have read it myself, and already mentioned to Ameiko that I have made some judgment as well based off the information it contains." Rei finishes, before swiftly repeating her deduction she had told Ameiko about several hours previously.

The patrons still cast some odd looks your way as you aid in their service; you are, after all, clearly returned from a foray into the wilderness. But only a few old-timers make open jokes or comments on the mud that spatters your feet and legs, and no one is too put off by your appearance. Ameiko laughs and joins you in serving the customers, and a few more comment on her own strange clothing, but the mood is light and pleasant.

When you take to dancing, many of the patrons watch on and applaud, especially when Ameiko finds her shamisen to play along with your movements. As the performance comes to an end, a few toss gracious comments, blown kisses, and even a handful of coins your way. By the time the night is winding down in the Dragon, it seems your subtle plan has worked. You suspect most folk will remember it as just another enjoyable night, perhaps one when the Kaijitsu girls gave a pleasant performance, and nothing more.

- - - - -

In the family room that night, however, the mood is far more serious and memorable. The scene is not so unlike that of the prior night: Ameiko barely controlling her motions, Atsuii looking to Lonjiku, and your father sitting as stone. When you mention Tsutamu's self-sacrifice, though, his shoulders sag a little; he reaches eagerly for the blade and note when you offer them.

Long silence holds sway in the room as your father spreads the parchment before him and reads over it. After a few moments, you hear a quiet sound, but it isn't until the third of its kind that you realize the source. You watch as a fourth tear drops from Lonjiku's face to land on the parchment, a quiet homage to the deep emotions that would draw such a display. When his hands clench into fists, and his shoulders buck once, Atsuii shifts from her cushion to his side, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders. But still, no sound comes from the man himself.

Some time later--perhaps only seconds, perhaps hours, given how it feels in the moment--Lonjiku draws a deep breath and straightens his back. His eyes are wet, but stoic, as they meet your own. He has a slight smile on his face, and you read sadness, pride, and regret etched there.

"You are more right than you might guess, although you do not know all. And I will tell you all I can, I swear. But..." He shakes his head. "It would not surprise you, I think, to know that I have thought for many hours of how I would tell you the truth. Every word is a gift, a curse, a burden, and they must be shared wisely. And yet now, with this, I find... I do not think my words were enough, even those I can recall."

His gaze falls once more to the parchment and blade before him, and he takes another deep breath. "I must think on this, and pray to our ancestors for guidance. I would ask that I be left alone here, for now. Return in the morning, my daughters, and find me here. We will speak of what has passed, and what is yet to come." Lonjiku turns to Atsuii and raises a hand to cup her cheek. "And you know what that is, my love. I trust you to prepare."

Atsuii nods, and she stands, gesturing for you and Ameiko to do the same. Lonjiku remains kneeling, his eyes once more locked on the parchment, as though reading its message for hidden meaning in the dim candlelight.

You can speak with Atsuii and/or Ameiko as you like before everyone goes about their necessities for the evening. Ameiko is looking for sleep, and you notice the Atsuii is moving in the direction of the stairs to the first floor, rather than your parents' bedroom.

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

I...I'd probably sleep to be perfectly honest. Rei thinks Atsuii is doing something in relation to what Lonjuku is currently keeping from her, so probably doesn't think following Atsuii will give her any answers.

Apologies again on the slowness of posting, this has been an unusually busy week for me. The next week may be as well, but I'll try to post sooner than a week from now.

The Dream:
You are in a garden. It is a garden you have never seen before: magnificent, luxurious, imperial. Low-arching bridges provide walkways over ponds and streams, the clear blue water reflecting the sky above. Beautiful fish swim by, their brightly colored scales catching the sun in a brilliant display. The plants are manicured and artfully arrayed, every turning branch and flowering leaf working together to fill you with a sense of calm. In the midst of all is a great flowering tree, its branches heavy with delicate pink petals. You know, in the way of dreams, that this is not your garden--but it could be.

Suddenly, the skies darken. Five massive clouds appear above the walls at the garden's edge, creeping across the blue sky above: thunderheads, dark and threatening. More clouds come behind them, but these five stand distinct, large and bulging and wicked. They rush across the sky, toward the sun. The sun is a woman, her flowing dress unlike anything you have seen--no, you recognize her. Her golden attire, her flowing hair, the sword she draws too late to stop the clouds from overwhelming her. You've seen her in a book, in a dream.

As the sky turns black, thunder booms all around. Sharp rain falls to the ground, pelting you, slicing your skin. A great gust whips up. You can no longer see the fish in the water. The plants are blown about in disarray. The petals of the great sakura tree--you know its name, you're certain--are scattered five ways, and lightning bolts strike each group, burning them to ash in a moment. A sixth lightning bolt strikes the tree itself, setting it ablaze, even amidst the driving torrent of the storm.

And then, as suddenly as the storm came, it stops. The clouds above retreat from the sun, dissipating as they go, splitting where golden rays pierce them until they are no more. After a moment, from the heavens, a new rain falls: gentle, calming, soothing. Pleasant, you think. Pleasant Rains. The sun is warm on your back. As you watch, the plants of the garden settle back to their places, flowers opening once more. Fish come to the surface and float just beneath the water. After a long moment, you realize they're looking at you.

The sakura tree is no longer ablaze. Its surface is blackened with ash, but it stands firm. Now you notice a seat carved at its base, as though from the living wood. And you look down to see something in your palm.

A single pink flower.

- - - - -

You awaken to find the sun already poking above the horizon; the light may well be what awoke you. None of your family roused you before dawn, which may be unusual, but you suspect you might have slept well later were it not for those golden rays on your eyelids. Yesterday's ordeal, coupled with the late nights on either side, must have tired you.

Lonjiku is still seated in the family shrine room. The window shutters and curtains are thrown wide now, though, and that same glorious sun shines through, lighting the room far brighter than the candles of night. Lonjiku himself is lit from behind with that sun, and you see he has changed to more ceremonial clothing, the sort he normally wears only for important holidays or religious ritual. The family daisho is set before him, along with Tsutamu's blade, now once more fitted with a grip and scabbard.

"I had a dream, this night," he says, without looking up. He is pouring two cups of tea from a pot, presumably one he fetched himself, or brought by someone for the occasion. He motions for you to sit, and once you have, he hands you one of the cups. "I suspect we all did. What you saw is yours; you may share as much or as little as you wish. I will not presume to divine the meaning. Atsuii has always had more of that gift than I, but even she is not an oracle. We may only guess at the full truth of what we see."

Lonjiku takes a long sip of the tea, and smiles. He seems in a curious mood, especially after the somber melancholy of the night before. You can't quite tell if he's happy, concerned, anxious, excited. Likely a mix of all of these. More than anything, the difference is that your adopted father now seems far more sure of himself than he did last night. He seems more like his usual self: a man of purpose.

"Atsuii and Ameiko are downstairs already. Ameiko should come here when her work is finished, although that may be some time from now. There is much to be done, after all." He grips his cup in both hands, as though for warmth and stability. "Rei. I have already said, we may only guess at the full truth. But I will tell you what I know, if only you ask. My brother wrote wisdom in his final words. To live in darkness is a terrible thing."

He sets down the teacup and looks at you more earnestly than you can recall: his soul laid bare in his eyes. "I have no shielded you from the truth, only hidden it from you, that it might strike you as a shadow. I do not seek forgiveness for this, only acknowledgement of my regret." Lonjiku bows forward, his forehead stooping so low that it connects with the floor. "I offer my deepest apologies, Rei. The deception ends now. Ask, and I will answer."

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

"There is nothing to forgive" Rei answers simply at her fathers offered apology. ""While it hurts, I understand it was done with my best interests at heart and I cannot argue with those intentions. I'll tell you about my dream in a moment, but I do have questions I would prefer answered first."

Rei pauses for a moment, collecting her thoughts and deciding what was most important. "Firstly, why me? Its not that I'm ungrateful but significant attempts have been made to ensure my safety and protection. Apparently my family is or was being pursued as well. What is so important that resources are being expanded to to locate or protect my family?"

Lonjiku rises slightly and offers a smile at your response. He nods and takes up his teacup once again. "You speak well, and wisely. We have taught you well, and you have learned even better. Truly, you are your family's daughter."

He takes another long sip and seems to ponder your question, weighing his words before speaking. When he finally does begin, his tone is one you haven't heard in some time: that of Lonjiku as the storyteller. It is a rich, measured voice, one which evokes a sense of wonder and imagination, and yet draws on reality in all it says.

"Nearly five-thousand years ago, our homeland, Minkai, was a fractured nation of warring states. Every clan jostled for power and prestige, combating the others in endless, bloody conflict. So it had been for a hundred years and more, and so it would have continued but for the divine intervention of the Empress of Heaven. Shizuru spread forth her hand over the warring states, and proclaimed a divine mandate of rulership. In her message, she established the Minkai: the Five Families who would oversee the unity and prosperity of Shizuru's people.

"From the many clans, she chose her five, and chose them well and wisely. The Teikoku, strong and imperious, would be the champions of war. The Shojinawa, cunning and deft, would insure against foes in the shadows. The Higashiyama, devoted and honorable, would produce great works and maintain proper custom. The Amatatsu, worldly and skillful, would spread her name and defend the borders. And the Sugimatu, peaceful and prosperous, would bring joy and wealth to all the people.

"And so it was, for thousands of years. The Five Families of Minkai brought the warring clans together, forged one nation from many. From the Sakura Throne of the Divine Mandate, they saw their people enter an age of honor, and prosperity, and peace. There were dark times, and missteps, yes. Even those chosen by Shizuru herself are but mortals, and many mistakes were made. The Teikoku Shogunate became one such error, and eventually collapsed under its own weight, and that of the other four families. But even then, the Teikoku retained their right to rule.

"For a thousand years, the Sakura Throne has been ruled by an Emperor or Empress chosen from the Five Families. The Divine Mandate has flowed in their blood, carried down the ages through every member, passed on from father to son, and mother to daughter. Like the sakura blossoms themselves, they have grown and spread far and wide, carried by the wind until their beauty touches all around."

Lonjiku pauses here, and drains his cup. His brow furrows, and his eyes darken with his voice.

"My father was a young man when the dark times began. When those blossoms started to be crushed, and burned, and snuffed out. It seemed like misfortune for a long time. Sickness, old age, a death in battle. We realized far too late that the deaths were planned. That someone was moving against the Minkai, seeking to cut down the Five Families and sever their line. For only if the last of the scions should fall, if no one should have rights to Shizuru's Divine Mandate, will another be able to rightfully rule the Sakura Throne.

"When they realized the plot, each family had their own reactions. It was the Sugimatu and the Amatatsu who had wisdom to understand their enemy. The coming Storms were too frightful, the families too entrenched in peace, to stand against them. Their hearts were with the people, and they knew that to protect them, the bloodlines must be hidden. The Amatatsu did not have the chance to escape, but with their dying actions, they aided the Sugimatu in a desperate journey across the Crown of the World.

"But the Storms pursued. They chased the survivors, harried them further and further. Many were lost at every stage of the journey. The bloodline dwindled, narrowed, until it fell to a single family. And even then, the parents were found out. And, as I know now, they took their own lives rather than face the torture and murder their enemies surely would have brought.

"Even a hundred years ago, the Divine Mandate rested on many men and women, all the Five Families who dwelt yet in prosperity. But now, they rest on a single daughter, hidden away to keep her people safe from those who would seize the Sakura Throne."

Lonjiku looks you in the eye, his face proud and only a little hesitant.

"Your name is Sugimatu Rei. You are, I believe, the last true ruler of Minkai and the Sakura Throne."

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei's first instinct is to laugh. Its also her second instinct. The idea seemed so ridiculous, like a children's daydream that it was difficult to process. With that said, her adopted father wasn't known as much of a joker, so Rei took a few moments to process. She looked at it from every angle, and couldn't deny that it made plausible sense, after a moment she nods slowly.

"I understand, that's why you put such focus on swordplay, Ameiko on deception, and Atsuii on etiquette. Its why the three of you tried to give me such a complete education. Not that I would speak ill of Sandpoint, but such skills wouldn't be in high demand normally. It explains how your brother acted towards me, why that man was so interested in me, and why you kept information from me - you didn't know how I would react."

Rei pauses, her thoughts racing ahead "If thats the case though, then why do the people....oh...oh thats actually very clever" she remarks, her train of thought cutting her off slightly. "There is a caretaker leader isn't there? A Puppet or shadow ruler? I bet whoever these Storms are, they don't want to be obvious about what is going on to avoid disruption. That does complicate things."

"Its worth mentioning that I had a dream similar to what you told me. I was in a garden, watching five storm clouds approach a woman, in the form of the sun. The resulting storm was intense, but eventually the sky cleared, and pleasant rain fell. There was a seat carved into a nearby tree, and I had a pink flower in my hand. I presume its a reference to the Storms - although I'm not a dream expert"

Lonjiku only nods at your first response, having awaited it in patient silence. As you start to guess and think on the plans of an enemy you barely know, he sighs and pours himself another cup of tea--refilling your own if you wish it. "That, I cannot say. The whole affair was certainly hidden from most people, from what my father told me. Many of the Five Families did not believe there was truly such a threat, let alone the other nobles, or the retainers, or common folk. They would certainly fear rule by the enemy we suspect, but..." He sighs again. "You must understand, I was an infant when your family left the capital. Atsuii was born during the journey itself. Everything we know is rumor and guesswork, handed down by our families. As I said, I will tell you all I can, but sadly I know only enough to understand I know little."

When you bring up your dream, he looks on with keen interest and fixed attention, eventually nodding again with a frown. "I am no expert, either, but I can piece together the more obvious parts. The woman is Shizuru, and the storm clouds, our enemies. There were whispers among the Oniwabanshu of a group called the Five Storms--my father was certain they were the masterminds behind the plan, as was Tsutamu. But we never learned fully who or what these Five Storms are, or what the end of their plan might be, beyond resting control of the country."

He sips his tea, staring into the cup, and suddenly smiles. "Pleasant rains," he repeats. "Indeed. A good omen."

Lonjiku's reverie is broken by the sound of footsteps, as Ameiko enters the room, somewhat flustered. She clears her throat apologetically and quickly takes a seat on one of the mats, drawing it slightly closer and bowing once she kneels. "Forgive me, Father, some of the chores took longer than I thought. What have I missed?"

"Only the most important parts." Your father pats a hand in the air as if to wave off Ameiko's apology. "But it is good you are here now. I am answering the many questions I'm certain Rei has."

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei offers Ameiko and Lonjuku a wry smile "I might need to set myself a question quota soon I think" she remarks to break up the serious nature of the conversation before turning her mind to the problem again.

"Who or what are the Oniwabanshu? I don't know if I was told about it before but it seems to have slipped my mind. More to the point though, what happens now? The Storms ideally want to eliminate me, but if that fails, they are probably just as happy with me being on the run for the rest of my life. I imagine that they are comfortable playing the long game. I'm not. I want them eradicated from my homeland - while exercising due caution of course. Is anyone else thinking along these lines?" she asks, slightly hesitant.

Lonjiku offers a smile back at your own, and your first question. "The Oniwabanshu were the members of the Oniwaban, the shinobi guard of the Emperor and the Imperial Families. The group was created during the time of the Teikoku Shogunate, but they persisted into the modern day. I do not know if they live now; I suspect many would have died defending the final heirs in Minkai." He sips his tea and gives a short chuckle. "If you want to know more, you should ask Atsuii, or even your sister. Atsuii's parents were Oniwabanshu, and she knows much of their ways. Ameiko has been taught some of this as well, unless her penchant for light footsteps, quick fingers, and wandering ears is natural?" Ameiko only reddens and bites her lip at the comment, and Lonjiku shakes his head with another laugh before returning to a serious manner.

"As for what happens now, none of us are certain. I said the Oniwabanshu whispered of them, because the official story was that there are no Five Storms. The Oniwaban itself never recognized the rumors as more than hearsay and superstition. We among the samurai guardians only supposed their goal was the Sakura Throne based on their attacks against the Families. But, assuming that is their plan..."

Lonjiku falls silent for another long moment. "Our plan had been to run and hide. Better to keep the bloodline safe, keep the Mandate hidden, than ruin the land in the name of honorable death. But it seems to me, now, that this is impossible. I have no doubt that the man who asked after your name in Magnimar was an agent of the Storms, whether he knew their goals or not. That means they are still searching for an heir. Things must be desperate in Minkai if they would pursue us so far. They wish for the Throne, and will not rest until it is theirs."

Your father looks to you directly. For perhaps the first time, he looks his age, or even older. You know your father is more than fifty years old, perhaps closer to sixty. Even if he is still broad in chest and shoulders, his hair is more gray than black, and the lines on his face are clear. But his eyes are sharp, and filled with fire.

"The road of which you speak will be long, and full of danger. It will require casting off everything you have known here, and traveling to a land we know only from distant memories. We will stand by your side, whatever you choose, Rei. My heart seeks only to aid and protect you. I know Atsuii is the same."

"Me too." Ameiko speaks up, looking to you with a smile. "You know I'll always be with you, sister."

Female Human Investigator (Cipher) 3 / Slayer 3 | HP 36/36 | AC 20 T15 FF16 | CMD 18 | F+6 R+8 W+4 |Init +4 | Perc +6 | Sense Motive +6

Rei weighs up the options, before giving a solemn nod. "I'll not disgrace my families name by cowering in a corner. There was indeed a time for hiding, but its time to bring that to a close and start a new chapter. The road may be long, and difficult, and full of danger, but few things of value are easy, and I'll not shirk my path in favor of an easier life. I seek to return to Minkai - its time the Divine Mandate returned home."

Ameiko claps her hands with a wide grin at your proclamation, quickly realizing her break from the serious conversation with a flush. But even as she calms herself, Lonjiku's smile widens in to a fierce grin of his own, and his shoulders start to rock. A moment later, your father is laughing, a sharp, dry sound that fills the room with its mirth. But you can sense something under the laughter; this is the laugh of a man who is having expectations met and exceeded, who is witnessing his hopes and dreams coming true.

"Yes it is, Rei. And we will return it, at the end of our blades if we must. I believed you would think so, my daughter, but it fills this old man with pride that you say it so well." Lonjiku is suddenly more alive than he was a moment ago; if he looked older than ever then, he seems a young man again now. The fire in his eyes is filling his very soul.

"Atsuii has been making preparations for our journey as we talked; your sister was helping her before she came here. But there is much yet to be done." He reaches into the folds of his kimono and draws forth a scroll, which he unrolls and lays on the floor between you, motioning for you to come closer. On the parchment is a rough map of Varisia and the lands to the north, with certain cities and roads marked clearly, and small additions for what would presumably be good places to camp for the night when traveling. It looks a good deal older than the map the family uses for their trips to Magnimar, and you note some Minkaian writing in places.

"The first step of our journey will be returning to Brinewall. We lived there before moving to Sandpoint, and by Tsutamu's letter, there we will find the warding box which contains your family's Seal--an ancient relic, the sign of Shizuru's Mandate. It will be necessary for what is to come, and an important relic of your family in any case. We could travel there alone, perhaps, but there is greater safety in numbers, and the journey will be long." Your father strokes his beard in thought and peers at the map. Judging from the distances marked, it looks like traveling to Brinewall will take two weeks or more, depending on weather and the roads.

"Atsuii has a better head for numbers and traveling than I," your father admits. "I believe she has considered options already. We would do well to hire some manner of guard, or ride with a caravan; you should speak with her. Your sister may know something of this as well?" Lonjiku raises his voice in a question, and Ameiko nods. "You will accompany Rei in the preparations, then. But don't go getting into trouble. We may be leaving town, but bridges are best left unburned, and we need allies."

He leans back and picks up Tsutamu's short sword, and hands it to you. "This is yours, to do with as you will. But I will say that traditionally, that sword has belonged to the Yojimbo of your family: your first sword and closest guardian. To gift it is a sign of utmost respect and trust." Lonjiku clears his throat and bows. "I would be honored if you entrusted it to Ameiko. We have raised her with such a role in mind."

Your sister seems caught off-guard by this display and suggestion, and only shifts her weight on her cushion, looking between you, Lonjiku, and the sword.

Rei looks at the map as well, studying the scroll carefully, letting the place names roll through her mind as she filters out what she knows about the area, region, environment, people, customs, and so on. When she's satisfied that she's absorbed as much information as she can, she looks up at Lonjiku.

"I'd insist on going to Brinewall regardless to be perfectly honest. It might be the final resting place of my family - possibly at any rate. If I'm leaving on this journey I might not return for any number of reasons, so I'd like to visit the place where I could be closest to them. I would prefer that we have some numbers though when we visit. As much as I'd appreciate a private experience, there is a possibility that our enemies expect me to return there. I doubt its crawling with enemies, but its possible that they may have an agent or two in the vicinity."

"I'll head out and assist Atsuii with the guards or caravan option shortly, there is just one small matter that I'd like to take care of first"

Rei takes the blade, before bowing her head slightly, half kneeling and offers the blade to Ameiko. "Sister, there is no-one else I would rather have by my side, as my close friend and guardian. Will you accept this blade aas a token of the trust and respect that I have for you?"

A long-awaited continuation of the journey begins.

Lonjiku looks on with clear pride as you take up Tsutamu's sword and offer it to Ameiko. Your sister herself still seems startled, uncertain of how to respond. Her eyes linger on the sword for a long moment, staring at its new grip and polished scabbard. When she lifts her head to meet your gaze, she smiles broadly, and her hands close over yours before she takes the sword.

"I accept this blade gladly, and will be by your side always. It is my honor to serve you in all things as I can, Rei. Sister." She takes the wakizashi in her hands and holds it for a second, before reverently sliding it into a sash at her waist. That measured, thoughtful moment is immediately broken as she lunges forward to draw you into a tight hug, and when she pulls back, the smile is even wider on her face. "I can't believe it, Rei. This is so exciting! I never thought--"

"None of us did," Lonjiku cuts her off. His tone is firm, but not sharp or admonishing. "But here we are, and there is no time for dwelling on what we thought or how things might have been. The two of you need to speak with Atsuii about preparations, while I work on my share of them." He glances around the room, as though taking it all in for the last time. "We'll need to pack our things, and find a new owner for this inn. It would not be right to abandon even an adopted home after all this time."

Your adoptive father claps his hands and bows once more, then turns and bows to the family shrine, and then pushes to his feet. "Let us begin our preparations."

Hope it's not presumptive of me to take you to Atsuii, as you'd said you were going there next.

Downstairs, the main room of the Rusty Dragon is in full operation, although it's fairly quiet, as the townsfolk who came for breakfast have left, and it's not yet time for the mid-day rush. Only a handful of travelers or older folk linger in the room, and it's easy to find Atsuii in one corner. Her table is covered in books and scrolls and loose parchment, and she appears engrossed in the work until you draw near, and she looks up, her face curious, then breaking into a bright, affectionate smile.

"Rei." She seems to have read your conversation with Lonjiku on your face, and she comes around the table to wrap you into another hug. "I'm so sorry. I'm sure you have so many questions, even now. We wanted to tell you, so many times. I hope you understand."

Once she draws back and releases you from the hug, Atsuii hovers for a few seconds, just looking at you. You notice her age, like you did your father's--Atsuii is only a few years younger than her husband, and her own hair has strings of white through its dark luster. But she also seems possessed of a more vibrant energy than you recall seeing for some time.

"So. I'm sure Lonjiku didn't dwell on particulars very much, just said we're going on a great journey. He probably told you I'm better at this sort of thing anyway, am I right?" Atsuii glances between you and your sister, and when Ameiko tightens her lips and gives you a sidelong look, Atsuii laughs and shakes her head. "Well, he's right, but that's no reason he shouldn't take part. If he wants to do all of our packing, though..." She sighs and gestures for you to look at her papers. When she continues, her tone is more hushed, such that only the three of you could hear her words.

"The journey ahead will be a very long one, make no mistake, Rei. We would do well to make sure we are adequately prepared, and that we know how we're going where we're going. Assuming you agree that Brinewall should be our first destination"--she pauses just long enough for your confirmation--"we have a few options. If we travel by foot, just the few of us, it could make it easier to hide along the roads, but it would take longer to get anywhere. Horses would make things faster, but leaves us more exposed. We could try to hire a ship to take us, but that has its own dangers, and I don't know if any captains would willingly sail to a ruined city. If we want to hide in plain sight, though, I would recommend we find or fund a caravan headed that way. Persuade them to stop at Brinewall long enough for our business there, and then continue."

She pauses and flips through some papers. "Thankfully, there is no shortage of caravaneers in Varisia, even in Sandpoint. I believe at least two are here now, and we could, as I said, fund or hire our own completely. In either case we'll want enough wagons for people and supplies." Having found whatever she was looking for, Atsuii clicks her tongue and folds a parchment, handing it to you. "This has some information on what we might want, and a summary of how much we should have to spend. I trust you and Ameiko will be wise in how you use it." She folds one hand over your own with a smile. "But this is your journey, and I want you to make the choices. I can offer my guidance, but I would not rob you of this."

This is already a big wall of text to reignite things, so I'll hold off on the precise information Atsuii has at the moment; feel free to ask any questions you'd like answered. Also, if you could roll three Knowledge (local) checks for me, that will also add to the information I can give you in the next post.
