Sayuki doesn't rest at the oasis; rather, she keeps her bow drawn, scanning the area around her. She's a little on edge about that whole area, for some strange reason.

------------------------------

She happily joins al-Sahba at her table, sitting as close to the couple as she can manage. "The goddess they followed grew bored and annoyed with them, and her worshipers did not know how to interpret that. Like so many men before them, they searched for alternate meaning when a simple refusal was not to their liking."

”Or she was a big hoax! I think we met her? Maybe? We saw something like her and boy oh boy was that a unpleasant. So either she does not exist or pretends not to sooooo I think we fixed it!”

"I believe, rather, that she was a leader of a cult some time ago who was able to project hey image and message to the here and now. She is truly fine for now and we have convinced the cultists to return to town and continue to lead productive lives." Bahram says with a smile at his differing take on the events in the desert.

Feeling guilty for her outburst, Sulana avoids the cultists as much as they avoid her during the trip back to town. I may have been frustrated, but these people are hurting and I just made it worse.

Back at the dinner with al-Sahba, she shakes her head. "Apparently Roidira, or something pretending to be her, sent them visions implying she didn't exist. That everything they'd been working towards was pointless. They didn't react well."

"Fortunately I think Bahram and Etna managed to talk them out of the worst of their spiritual crisis. Whether they continue trying to worship Roidira or not, I don't think they'll cause you any more trouble."

"Bah! If only you lot had seen what I saw. Rodira is real alright, and she's abandoned her followers, rather than guide them," Aulurius says with much pent up frustration. "She saw that I was not truly her follower and mocked me for it. She is angry with her followers; in her eyes, they used emptiness as a destination, rather than a journey. So instead of guidin' 'em, she abandoned 'em, and left 'em one final task," the dwarf air-quotes the next bit, "'where [she] could crush their stupidity in one fell swoop.' Rodira has forsaken her followers and left them without purpose. Hopefully they all will find meanin' elsewhere and won't be a nuisance."

Aulurius is visibly shaking when he finishes speaking. If a deity could abandon their people like that... I hope the powers of Golarion never falter.

The Waking Rune

Al-Sahba pauses and reflects before she continues:

"What unspeakable cruelty. I have no love for the Roidiran faith, but surely her followers deserved better than losing their goddess among a sea of riddles. Questions of divine philosophy can be the most challenging questions we face. It is not surprising that a divinity known for cloaking herself in secrets would make such questions even more unapproachable. Yet, I believe there is much to consider with what you have said.
Perhaps the paradox of Roidira’s nature could be understood through the lens of other absences that we tend to give names. It could be, in that sense, that as cold is the absence of heat, ignorance is the absence of knowledge, and darkness is the absence of light, Roidira represents the absence of something else. While I have studied theology extensively, you have seen more of Roidira’s nature than I have. No matter the faith, she who experiences the touch of the divine becomes an authority the wise should heed. What are your interpretations of what you have witnessed?”

Etna will rock a bit in her chair as she thinks. "Well in my stupor she said some stuff about how lesser minds construct stuff from illusion and force reality on stuff that was not supposed to be. Said all void can grant are echoes. Soooo I'm thinking they either believed her so hard she existed, or that by believing in her it makes her stop being real cause... she is a jerk like that?"

Sulana shakes her head. "I didn't receive one of the visions, but from my limited interactions with her..." She pauses, clearly thinking hard. "Frankly, she seemed completely dismissive of any knowledge or enlightenment that she deemed less worthy than her own, which was all of it. She told me she was going 'where not even the gods may follow.' Whoever or whatever she was, I don't think she's coming back."

"I began to believe parts of what she was sayin', and yer not wrong, ma'am. The lens of absences is exactly what she wanted people to remove and see through to find their own wisdom. I believe she did exist and abandoned her followers." Aulurius heaves a heavy sigh. "I feel better gettin' all that out, and I'm glad to be away from that cult."

Listening to his companions stories of what they saw and their thoughts on in, combined with his own recollections, Bahram tries to make sense of it all.

"I think that Rodira did not approve of her followers and so she left them. I saw in a vision that she ran herself through with a sword, and she fell into the pool as not blood and entrails, but as white feathers. I think that she was saying that these "White Feathers" were never her followers, but that they were born after she abandoned her misguided people."

The Waking Rune

"So it does seem that Roidira abandoned her followers then; that may be what turned them from a harmless fringe cult into unpredictable nihilistic dissidents.

This white feather imagery is troubling though, Bahram. The satrap asked me to find a way to discredit both the Roidiran cult and the White Feather. I am uneasy about treating both in the same way - but are they in fact the same? How would you have me use the knowledge that you have brought?" al-Sahba asks you all.

"From my limited interactions, I don't believe they're the same. They both share a certain tendency towards dismissing conventional wisdom, but asceticism is not nihilism."

Sulana briefly toys with the symbol of Erastil around her neck. "Perhaps the satrap would disagree, but I don't believe there's anything wrong with seeking a simpler existence."

"Fer the disbanded cult of Roidira, offer them a new path. Or, as Roidira would say, a new destination. The White Feather... well, I'm not sure what ta make of 'em." The dwarf looks over at Sayuki, thinking she had the most interaction.

Sayuki nods. "Those who do no harm do not invite harm upon themselves-- I believe that is a Serenrite philosophy as well as my own, correct?"

Etna will be relaxing on her back on top of Blue at this point. "I mean as long as they don't get all angry or mopey they are fine right? Some people like the quiet life. We may be biased considering we jump into ancient dungeons looking for trouble though."

"I would have to agree with my colleagues. The two religions are the same, yet different. The Rodirans seemed to be the more troublesome of the two, and they have now discredited themselves and left their previous path. With any luck, they will become peaceful members of the community and nothing else will need to be done with them. As to the white feathers...I may be wrong, but I'm not sure that anything needs to be done with them either. As my friends have said, they are causing no harm at this time, so we should extend the same courtesy." Bahram feels as if he my speaking out of turn here. This type of discussion is not one of his strong points. He's not sure what is strong point is yet, but still...

The Waking Rune

"So you think the White Feather harmless? The satrap does not agree. But that is a matter of politics, rather than theology.

Thank you for your service. You have aided my city and brought succour to those who needed it. Please keep my signet rings, as a token of my esteem. I have a few additional gifts for you in recognition of your efforts."

Al-Sahba presents you with a number of magic items, all of which appear on the chronicle sheet.

"Please, stay end enjoy dinner with us this evening. In the morning you can return to your venture captain, where you will no doubt have further reports to make.

Sayuki smiles. ”Our organization can not seem one group or another to be dangerous politically or spiritually. We settle for resolving that which is a threat physically, more often than not.”

Turning her attention back to more pressing matters, she admires her plate. ”I am not often this direction, but my people have a fondness for fowl, and yours have a talent for them, it seems,” she grins.

Sulana inclines her head. "Thank you for your generosity. I am certain whatever you end up doing with the White Feathers, it will be fair."

After the dinner, Sulana sits down and struggles with her report to the Pathfinder Society. It's hard to put the experience into words, given how much of the theology went over her head. Still, she tries her best.

overwhelmed with all of the political/religious doctrine and judgments, Bahram is ready to change the conversation or leave.

This is not what I thought that I would be doing. Where are all of the crypts that need delved into? Where are the ancient monuments never before seen with modern eyes? Where are the clues leading to ancient artifacts?

"Yes, I'm sure that you are much more capable of drawing the correct conclusion of what to do with the white feathers than we are. I am just happy that we were able to report to you what we experienced so that you are now appropriately armed to make this decision. I thank you for your hospitality."

Turning toward the rest of the group, Bahram addresses Alurius and Sulana. It has been a pleasure to serve these first two missions together. I hope that they will not be our last. Um.. Our last together I meant. Of course I don't want them to be our last either...
Etna, Sayuki, I could not have asked for better than the two of you to trudge through the desert with. Perhaps next time we will find ourselves in a more pleasant climate.

Okay. Need to go see mom now.

Before we leave town, I believe there is a matter Sayuki left hanging...

When Sayuki explains that she is a little short of funds, the merchant reluctantly agrees to keep the enchanted garment back for her "as a favour to Her Holiness."

”My darling Abdul!” sings Sayuki as she sways toward his booth. ”If you have sold my wardrobe to anyone who won’t look twice as good in it I shall be ever so cross!”
