"The High Priestess didn't say anything about our weapons when inviting us. Sayuki's probably right that there's a place to leave them at the temple itself, if we need to leave them anywhere at all."

Bahram hangs his head just a little, and may be blushing as well (it is difficult to tell with his complexion) and says, "I stopped by to see my mom. She's an archaeologist here in Qadir. These belong to one of her colleges and she thought that it would be more proper. His gaze comes back up to meet hers as he adds, "Maybe you could meet her after we're done here and we all head out! Anyway, you're probably right about our stuff."

But just in case we are about to make a dinner faux pas,

The Waking Rune

Either Knowledge skill would be appropriate. Bahram, you surmise that you have not been invited to a religious ceremony, so general table etiquette for a formal dinner would apply. You don't think Al-Sabha will be expecting you to act like nobility though.

A little later, the pathfinders arrive at the Grand Temple of Sarenrae. You recall the words of your Venture-Captain: "When you meet with the high priestess, be sure to put your best effort into impressing her. Represent yourselves well, and she could prove a powerful ally in the future."

The Grand Temple is where High Priestess al-Sahba makes her home. The imposing building's vast, gilded dome and soaring minarets are visible for miles around. Each is capped with a stylised holy symbol of Sarenrae, holding aloft a brass and turquoise sunburst. The communal dining quarters are more modest. The great extravagance of the room is found in its stained-glass windows, whose arches depict the triumphs and trials of Sarenrae. Dinner with the High Priestess takes place beneath a vast window depicting Sarenrae’s flaming sword piercing the heart of Rovagug himself.

Junior clerics and temple initiates take your cloaks, and any large (or obvious) weapons. They also serve you at the table.

The High Priestess welcomes you. ”Now that my formal duties for this holy festival are ended, and the blessed sun sinks below the horizon, we can talk and take our ease.”

Al-Sahba holds the letter of introduction from Venture-Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi in front of her: “It seems our interests are aligned. But before we get down to the business of the Roidirans, tell me about yourselves.”

”A pleasure to meet you again, High Priestess,” she says, ”and our gratitude for sharing this bounty with us. My name is Sayuki; my wife and I run a pastry shop in Nirmathas. More relevantly, I provide my assistance with delicate operations.” She offers a quick, respectful bow before taking her seat.

She sits at the table when it seems appropriate to do so. This is really extravagant. How much did all of this cost?

”Hello, High Priestess. I joined the Society recently, looking to explore some of Golarion’s most interesting places. I’m a ranger by trade; I started out helping protect loggers in the Ashwood. Um, that’s in Varisia.”

Did I insult her by assuming she wouldn’t know where the Ashwood was, or would it have been more insulting to assume it was important enough that she would? Ugh, I’m no good at politics!

Hoping to change the subject, Sulana asks “How old are these stained glass windows? They’re beautiful!

Bahram hands over his great axe as he walks in and looks around at the windows and admires the arches.

"I've always admired this building from afar, but have never had occasion to step foot in it. It is a true blessing. I'm curious as to how long it has stood. I'm quite sure that it will remain so for time beyond remembrance. It is quite the marvel.

Shaking his head as he finds himself at the table with the rest of his party and the high priestess, he appears as if he just remembered that he was not alone. Listening to Sayuki and Sulana, Bahram moves to follow suit with introduction.

"Forgive my meanderings, My name is Bahram Al-Urgug and I am an archaeologist by trade. Being such, I find buildings and architecture truly fascinating. I grew up here in Qadira actually. My mother works as an archaeologist in the local guild, which is how I got my start. I've always enjoyed digging up secretes, now I do it in order to help others rather than just for the sake of discovery. I have only just begun, so I am afraid that I have little to offer, but I would like to extend any assistance I may give you as the most prized gift I can offer at this time, as humble of a gift as it may be." Bahram finishes with a sitting bow of the head.

"You are a pastry chef, Sayuki? You must, indeed, have delicate hands!" al-Sahba chuckles warmly.

"You like the windows? It's Sulana, isn't it? They were fitted when the Temple was originally built. What do you think of them?" Sulana, you can impress the High Priestess here using Knowledge (Engineering, History OR Religion) but not Diplomacy which would just be flattery.

"Bahram, is your mother a Professor at the archeologists' guild by any chance? You seem a little young for such a position, though I have heard it is sometimes awarded to prodigies." The High Priestess evidently recognises your robe Bahram.

And it's incredible how the colored glass is still transparent enough to let in the light. I imagine when the sun rises directly behind this window," indicating the one depicting Sarenrae's defeat of Rovagug, "it must feel like you're getting a glimpse of the actual event."

I didn't see it specified in the description, but it seems like the most impressive window depicting Sarenrae's greatest battle should be facing the rising sun.

The Waking Rune

Bahram recounts what your Venture Captain said in his instructions to you: the Roidirans follow the goddess Roidira, the Dark Sister of Knowledge. To Roidirans, nothing matters more than following their goddess’ example and rejecting established wisdom to uncover universal truth. Recently, Roidirans have been returning from forays outside of Qaharid in the throes of grief and causing quite a few disturbances. Whatever knowledge the Roidirans have found in their pilgrimage must be significant.

You don't know any more than this - and your mother's warning against getting mixed up with the cult - but it is enough to prompt a response from the High Priestess.

"The Roidirans are little known outside Qadira. They vex me. They were never violent, until recently. I think your Venture Captain may be right about their pilgrimage being relevant to this change." Al-Sahba becomes somber. "A void is not silent; it screams with its utter pointlessness until it is the only sound your very soul can hear. To listen to these Roidirans talk, that is what they seek. They begin every incantation, every prayer, with the mantra ‘There is no presence; there is absence. There is no meaning; only knowledge.’ To reach this terrible state of grace, they abjure everything we’ve ever known. They reject the knowledge of our libraries and universities, the collected wisdom of centuries of Sarenite faith, and the stacks of debate about our laws and politics. To them, these are the playthings of lesser minds, and only the secrets that Roidira keeps are true knowledge.”

"I fear that they must, Sayuki." al-Sahba replies.

"Sarenrae is not an evangelist, and she condemns faith imposed by the sword. As in her heaven, so on Qadira’s earth. Our laws enforce religious pluralism, and this protects even Roidira’s devotees. But as of late, they have not returned the gesture of goodwill. You were fortunate to arrive on a day free of disruption from them. Yesterday they flooded the Temple Square holding signs and haranguing festival-goers, even children! Telling them that there is ‘only darkness’ and that ‘even breathing is pointless.’ This incensed citizens, some of whom started fights. I myself had to intervene in a scuffle—on my temple’s doorstep! It’s all gone too far.

Under such conditions I cannot leave the city, especially not at the apex of the Sunwrought Festival, which practically doubles our population. But clearly something must be done, and if you can do it, and act on my behalf, then that is to the good of all. I would have sent some of my paladins, but our numbers are stretched too thin by the tourist population and I need them to keep order here."

"Thank you Bahram. I do. I suggest two places that you might make enquiries this evening, each representing very different sectors of Qaharidi society, where you could find more information about the Roidiran cult. The first is a local tavern and gambling hall frequented by mine workers called the Flaming Scimitar, and the second is an elite private club called the House of Two Rivers. There you will find Vashti al-Amiyyah, of the White Feather."

As the meal concludes, al-Sahba gives each of you a brass ring emblazoned with her house’s device, to demonstrate her patronage. In addition to relieving the burden of the merchants' inflated prices, you gain +2 to Diplomacy checks for the rest of the scenario whilst wearing al-Sahba's device.

“There is another matter. As your venture-captain most certainly told you, I serve the satrap as one of his Peerless advisors. While I am not at liberty to discuss the satrap’s precise wishes, know that he has taken an interest in this matter as well. Powerful forces indeed are watching your moves from here on out.

I have a few small items that I will gift you. My shade to you tomorrow, Pathfinders. Go with Sarenrae.”

Al-Sahba provides you with 2 potions of Endure Elements and 1 potion of Cure Light Wounds each (that is, you each receive 3 potions; companion creatures sadly do not receive anything extra); and a small prayer token.

You may continue to converse with Al-Sahba a while, or visit on of the two leads she has given you, or do something else. Once 3 of you agree what to do next (aside from conversation with Her Holiness) we will proceed with that option.

Sulana remains silent throughout most of the meal, hoping to not accidentally offend the High Priestess. She does however listen carefully. A pilgrimage that leads the Roidirans to reject breathing as pointless? What could possibly be happening out there?

She gratefully accepts the potions and the ring. "Thank you for your generosity." She hesitates, then continues. "If you don't mind, I do have a couple questions. Has the White Feather cult been causing any trouble? We've talked extensively about the Roidirans, but I still know little about the White Feathers beyond what our venture-captain told us."

She glances down at her (practical, but plain) outfit. "The second question: will the House of Two Rivers even allow us entry? I can't imagine foreign adventurers are commonly seen at an 'elite private club.'"

The Waking Rune

"If I may take your second question first, Sulana: show the staff at the House of Two Rivers the rings that I have given you. They will know that I am your patron. I am certain that will prove sufficient to admit you.

As for the White Feather, they are somewhat unsettling, but they are more content to keep to themselves than the Roidirans are. Vashti al-Amiyyah is the exception: why would an avowed ascetic who renounces worldly goods spend so much time at an elite club?"

Three in favour of the fancy club, so we'll go there first...

You follow al-Sahba's directions to the House of Two Rivers, a members-only high society club in a wealthy district of the city. There are burly but well-dressed staff on the door, who initially shake their heads at your approach. But once they see your brass signet rings they recognise your patron, and suddenly become most welcoming. They scramble to open the doors for you, and usher you inside.

Merchant princes and princesses, along with high-ranking officers and public officials, gather here for fine drinks in finer glasses, beneath a ceiling painted elegantly in gold leaf with stars. The stars are connected in fanciful depictions of the constellations of the summer sky. In one corner, a woman in a red dress croons to tipsy onlookers, and in another, an unusually ascetic woman in white holds court around people whose dress is far more elegantly ornamented than hers.

The woman in red is busy singing, (and Etna looks like she's already trying that angle). Bahram and Zeta don't seem to be having any luck with Al-Amiyyah, and if they can't impress her Sulana certainly wouldn't be able to.

Unsure of what else to do, Sulana approaches the bartender. Like Etna before her, she shows her ring. "Um, hi. What's the cheapest drink you have?"

Diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

Unsurprisingly, asking for the cheapest possible drink is a major faux pas on her part.

That roll is just too perfect for her character.

Hey, with my Aid Another, that's a whopping... 3!

Sayuki, following Sulana, does her best not to show the wince that reverberates through her more cultured soul. Maybe conversation is nothing like archery... or at least, I hope not, or I'm going to have to keep an eye out for friendly fire.

Aulurius, not being terribly knowledgeable in these things, moves to listen to the lady in red.

The Waking Rune

In between songs, the singer says to Etna and Zeta: "I get a break in half an hour. Buy me a drink and we can talk then, honeys." she winks.

The barkeep scoffs and shakes his head at Sulana. "A half-carafe of house wine is 2 gold. No, we don't sell it in single glasses."

Bahram can't cut through the chattering throng.

Anyone else got any of those Knowledge skills?

Sayuki watches her friends approach the woman in white, trying to think of anything she might know that would impress.

Kn.(Local): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

She realizes she's not particularly knowledgeable about what might interest the locals, however.

The Waking Rune

OK, looks like everyone has attempted a skill check here now.

The upmarket crowd around al-Amiyyah is unwilling to allow a band of scruffy adventurers into their circle, and the White Feather monk seems focused on lecturing her audience, some of whom debate her fiercely.

Then the singer takes her break. "Do you like my music darlings, or did you come to see our favourite little diversion, al-Amiyyah? She's very peculiar. I am called Naadiya, the Desert Rose. Whilst she won't admit it, Vashti is a big fan of mine. Buy me a bottle of wine - the Sharif '02 is good - and I'll introduce you."

Naadiya will help you for a 20gp bottle.

Sayuki sighs. If they cannot get her attention socially, they can get her attention subtly instead. She finds a spot to blend in a not-too-far distance away.

She points at the woman in white, as well as each of her comrades. When Sayuki whispers, al-Amiyyah hears.

”Madame al-Amiyyah; I have a message that you must receive. In ten minutes’ time, meet the red fox beside the kitchen entrance,” she whispers.

And that’s my Message SLA for today!

The Waking Rune

Message only links one creature per caster level (plus the caster herself), but that's enough for Sayuki to reach al-Amiyyah. Decide which one other party member you link.

Sayuki receives a whispered reply: "A Message spell? Who are you, speaker? Answer truthfully. I have no particular wish to leave my audience."

Ah, I missed that! I’m gonna go with Etna.

Sayuki hid her frown behind her fingers; some of the less educated wouldn’t recognize a Message spell; other, less wise folks would recognize it but consider the implied importance of a directed whisper and a meeting place as too serious to ask many questions.

Rather than putting al-Amiyyah on the spot, she had put herself on it.

”A traveler; a messenger; a follower and a skeptic. According to some religions, I am no one and nothing. Currently, however, I would style myself as a woman with a desire to learn, and to ask. Moreover, unlike your current audience, I shall not be here tomorrow; if you would have me hear your message and spread it elsewhere, today is your only chance.”

The Waking Rune

"Step forwards then, messenger."

Al-Amiyyah invites Sayuki into her circle. Once Sayuki steps forwards, the White Feather adherent dismisses her audience and motions Sayuki to a booth. I'll assume Sayuki complies with the invitation - Etna can come along too, linked via Message.

"A novel way to get my attention - not without risk. You clearly are not a member of this club. You come seeking wisdom? Abandon rank and caste, give up your worldly goods; the artificial trappings of civilisation are as venom to the soul."

Sayuki approaches the woman, though not as the human woman she has been thus far, but as a red fox, standing tall as any human, a single tail swishing behind her.

"There is wisdom in that, surely," she says, skipping the niceties-- after all, a proper greeting is yet another trapping of civilization. "Am I to discard my clothing as well? Is anything at all kept?"
