"We have to finish some minor repairs before we can set sail. If you would be so kind as to guard my ship from any demonic activity, that would be outstanding!"

"Honestly," says Protonicus, "I would love to help these folks, but I need to know it is safe. Can you do anything to screen the refugees, to make sure they aren't just going to kill and rob us, or worse?"

Upon the approach of the mass of people, Obsidian slams his palm on the ground and forms stone walls 15ft high except for a 10ft wide space. He then grows to twice his size once more and takes up the 10ft space.

Elric looks at the masses, thinks for a short ammount and begins casting a Summon Monster 7 to conjure an Avoral Agathion.(Added to the list with expanded Summon Monster)
Once the Agathion is summoned, Elric turns to him and tells him: "Please scan these refugees for any kind of magically disguised intruder or shapechanged Demon. We do not want succubi to be mixxed into a group of helpless refugees."
The Avoral uses his innate True Seeing/See invisibility/Detect Magic and his +23 perception (and +15 Sense Motive) to look for any kind of disguises or polymorphes.

With a paladin's fine sense of smell, Slim takes advantage of the barricade Obsidean erected to focus his detect evil on the would be refugees as they approach the ship through the 10ft gap.
"I'll let you know if I'm sure any of them possess a detectable aura of evil."

Looking at the ship, the crowd of refugees and the barricade Obsidean erected, Slim takes a position near the 10ft gap that everyone will have to funnel through. From there, he begins scanning the gaggle in a 60ft cone, detecting evil.
Working 'theater-of-the-mind' here, until there's a sense of where on the map the stone wall and the refugees are.

Sorry, there is no actual map of the encounter... which is the case for many of these. I was sort of hoping Obsidian would draw in a stone wall for us, where he made it. I added something.
The scanning goes well, with no apparent evil coming out, until Elric finally notices that some of the refuges are not what they seem! With four folks on the dock, cleared by the team he sees a group of four that looks to the obvious eye to be a lovely family... but Elric sees a trio of dwarves carrying dull grey guisarmes!

The three townsfolk charge forward, demanding to be let on board the ship. One of the townsfolk is knocked off into the river when this happens.

Also, if you could add the stat block for the summons somewhere, perhaps in a spoiler, that would be fantastic.
Elric's glitterdust does hit a bunch of innocents. Remember, AS FAR AS YOU CAN TELL, the dwarves DO NOT look like dwarves... I'll say this if it helps, they have a seeming spell on them.

After some thinking and square counting, it's clear that Candi would at best get halfway to Crowd#3 since she used her Standard Action to execute an overrun. So, she'll stop in the square under the "dwarf" which was pounced by the dire tiger.
