I believe that I speak English and Spanish then.

I took English and French as Canada is a Bilingual country and most people there can speak and write in both languages.

Gavril did take Linguist to reflect the fact that he's gifted with language and has picked up a number of regional tongues during his time in the Middle East. If you're saying that we get natural ones for free on top of that, though, time to pick up a couple of others, perhaps...

Dossier on the way; I've just been tanked with work in classes the last few days, so I haven't had much time. Should be up soon though.

This is Zayne. Character is built and backstory added. I think I got everything right. I don't have the book yet so I don't have a load out. Anyone mind making a list of gear for me? From what I have read SWAT tends towards military surplus. I was thinking an M4 (5.56), SIG Saeuer P226 (.40), Kevlar vest, a few special grenades (flash bang, smoke) and if there is enough, a shotgun.

My turn..

DOSSIER: Davis, Harland Marcus:

FULL NAME: Harland Marcus Davis
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: United Nations Peace Operations Division
RANK: Lieutenant

HEIGHT: 186 centimetres (6ft 1in. Imperial)
WEIGHT: 87.1kg (192 lbs. Imperial)
HAIR: None, Keeps regularly shaved
EYES: Blue
OTHER FACIAL FEATURES: Scar beneath right eye, approx. 1 inch long.
DISTINGUISHING BODY FEATURES: Scar on left thigh, approx. 7 inches long. Burn scar on right abdomen lower quadrant, approx. 3 inches in diameter.
AGE: 47
SEXUALITY: Unknown, never married. No evidence or preference on record.
RELIGION: Unknown, no evidence or preference on record.

PRE-SERVICE HISTORY: Harland Davis was born to U.S. Marines Corps Staff Sgt. Marcus Aaron Davis and Jessica Marie Davis nee Lummox on September 5th, 1969 at approx. 12:35am local time at Bethesda Military Hospital in Maryland. His father was deployed to Vietnam during his birth and was consequently killed in the Battle of Ho Trang later that year. He never met his son. During his formative years, Harland idolized his father through stories that both his mother and grandfather told him. He spent his school years obtaining better than average grades and becoming 'a man your father would be proud of' according to his mother. Harland played high school football, obtaining a letter and a scholarship to Duke University, North Carolina. After attending school for two years and obtaining his B.A.S. in Foreign Studies, he signed on with the United States Marine Corps.

SERVICE RECORD: Harland scored high marks on the ASVAB test and was awarded his choice of occupational specialty within the Marines. Choosing infantry, he passed OCS and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and given command of a reconnaissance platoon in Kilo Company of the 3d Battalion, 9th Marines. His unit was deployed to Panama in 1989 during Operation Just Cause. After successfully capturing a loyalist outpost and defending it against overwhelming odds, he was awarded the Navy Service Medal and the Marine Combat Medal as well as a Bronze Star. His actions gathered the attention of the budding MARSOC and he was sent to qualify for Marine Force Recon. Harland passed his initial qualifiers and after further training was given command and a promotion to 1st Lieutenant. His new unit saw action during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. (See attached dossier addendum for full records.) During his time in Iraq, Harland met operators from the CIA funded Special Activities Division. Given his history and his friendship with said operators, he was recommended for testing and recruitment. All records after his training at Camp Peary are still *Classified-Top Secret*.

AFTER SERVICE: It is unknown, due to the CIA's classification procedures, exactly what caused Harland to leave the SAD teams in 2009. What is known is that after being burned, he sought work as a civilian contractor and found the work less than appealing. Though he made a lucrative living, contacts noted him as being a 'living shell' of his formerly outgoing self. A contact put him in touch with Blackwater Professional Services, a known PMC. He signed on in 2011. His current assignment is with a United Nations Peace Operations Division in Basra.

PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION: Harland's return to active duty is not without its consequences. He is still restricted in speech and thought patterns and has little to open up about. Even so, when among friends, he is easygoing and lively. It is also noted that we have no record of any intimate relationships to date. This is obviously not normal, but also not unheard of. Age has slowed his reflexes and it is obvious that this wears on him. We will continue to watch his progress and observe any indications of prior service affecting his performance.

CONCLUSION: Harland Davis comes to us with a lot of experience and knowledge as well as a decent command record. His services are not only welcomed, but needed in this situation. That said, keep an eye on him. His blacked out history with the CIA is... unnerving.

@Jackalyn: Only issue I see is also your Parry; unless I'm missing something, it should be a 6 with the Bayonet, not a 7. Also, your sheet reminded me of something: the few house rules I use for SW.

  • Climbing d4+ is required for the Assassin Edge
  • Thrown weapons use Fighting, not Throwing
  • Tracking and Survival are rolled together
  • I hope I am wrong because it mean I missed an important bonus somewhere but how is you have 3 ability increases and 2 edges? I count 1 from major hindrance and 1 from the 2 minor, then 1 from advancement. The other advancement is an edge so where is the other edge coming from? Do we get another for free?

Kristophe, I might actually recommend specializing more in skills rather than having them so spread out. Keep in mind you can always roll for everything, just untrained skills is s d4-2. Also, a lot of skills are only used when "under stress" like Driving, Piloting, Boating, etc. Just attempting to climb a building, even in combat, won't prompt a roll unless you're actually being shot at. Same thing with other skills like that; landing a helicopter in a combat zone only matters if you're being actively attacked by flying enemies, or if some of the aliens are trying to ram your vehicle off the road. Other than that, though, I think your character looks good. Let me know when you get a backstory up and moving, though.

And against your better judgment I have chosen more skills than less. The way I see it, its better to get more at the beginning because it is cheaper to increase them later. You can buy 1 skill for an advancement or increase 2 that are below the linked attribute. Also I wanted to get the full range of skills I thought a SWAT trained individual would have.

    Climbing: Repelling into buildings
Driving: Cop, so needs to be good enough to chase another car and pit.
Fighting: His personal choice to be good at close combat.
Intimidation: Intimidate criminals into giving up.
Investigation: Basic training to follow leads.
    Knowledge (Battle): squad tactics
Notice: Constant threat to self and life so needs to notice them.
Persuasion: Talk a man down or at least get close enough to disable.
    Shooting: Obvious
Stealth: Get close quietly before breaching.
Streetwise: Cop, needs to know the streets.

Hey Jon! I am halfway into finushing my submission, but I have a question for you.
But before that, I will let you take a quick peek into Jacob Farrell.

    This is how he looks
I had to upload it, couldn't find the source for the picture again

    Now to the questioning.
I've found the lack of semi-auto rifles or assault rifles capables of switching... annoying. How much would you price a mod that allows for a semi-auto or auto rifle switching to single shot only? And a single-shot, 3-round and auto switcher?

How about laser sights? And scopes? The scopes are mentioned in the rulebook, but I can't find the price.

EDIT I'm an idiot. Googling it, I found that Auto means exactly the opposite that i thought: you can fire single shot if you want.

    Humans get one free edge.

Sweet. Races weren't in the Test Drive on their website.

    Jackalyn Chase wrote:

So this is in addition to the build rules that Jon posted at the start?

Oh I also missed the free edge! Good catch.

@Zayne: I do allow purchasing a skill and upgrading another below it's linked attribute for an Advance, as opposed to how the book does it. Also, the Marksman Edge requires to be to be at Seasoned rank, which means you need at least 20 XP, or four Advances. Also, please list your skills as die types, not the amount of points placed in them.

@Emissary: He looks fine, and as you noted they can fire once per turn. A number of them also have 3-round burst. As for sights/scopes, I can't say why there aren't prices for them. I'll make them 150, sound fair? Other types of weapon scopes will become available later, but for now we'll say that covers all sights/scopes we have in modern day.

@Borax: Yes, I didn't catch that you missed that. Humans receive a free Edge at the start of the game, as long as they qualify for it as normal.

Added McGyver edge for Human boni and some background_dossier at his alias-profile. I think it makes sense IC that not many informations are known (I mean he is from the Mossad after all), but I can give some more infos *GM-only* for fleshing him out? Don't know how you like it Jon.

So only when we use an Advance to purchase a skill do we get the free upgrade?

What are the scope mechanics? Also, are there infrared scopes?

Don't know if I'll get chosen, but I will admit to looking forward to trying this game out. Been doing nothing but PFS PbP for the last couple of years so this is a welcome change. Just hope we can make it last.

@David: GM Only info is helpful to me. Please include it if you have ideas for your character you don't want being public knowledge.

@Borax: I'm not sure what you mean. Basically, you normally have to use your entire Advance to purchase a new skill at d4. Instead, I allow purchasing a new skill at a d4 to count like raising a skill below it's linked attribute. Assuming your Agility was a d10, for example, you could purchase Repair at a d4 and increase Shooting to a d10 with the same Advance. You could also just purchase Repair straight to a d6 with this system as well. Other than that, it works normally; you can increase one skill that's equal or greater than your die type, or two below it.

Scope mechanics are found on page 50; and no, not in the base game. Seeing as you all are just standard UN Peacekeepers, you probably don't have access to infrared scopes just yet; once you've joined XCOM a lot more tech becomes available to you. Scopes give a +2 Shooting at Medium Range or longer, as long as you don't move that turn.

As for making it last, I have a tendency to keep a game running as long as I have at least a few regular posters who want to continue. I'll recruit new players rather than let something die as long as those still posting want to keep going.

    Emissary's submission coming thru!

I have now realised that another submitter have chosen McGyver edge, and even though I think it fits Jacob real well I can swap that around... there's never enough edges!

    Dark Archive

Gonna have to wait on this one. Still got t figure out the system a bit more before I go on. Keep me up as a replacement for reinforcements.

Too much going on...don't have time to apply. Withdrawing! Good luck all!

Oh, sweet, scopes are available! I'll get rid of some stuff to attach one to my Barrett, if that's okay.

    Sure, go ahead.

Alright, swapped out my Uzi and the ammo for it for a scope and some extra ammo.

    Myth-weavers Sheet

Okay, so, I've decided that my character is David Wright, a red-blooded American patriot who's in the squad to, at least in his eyes, "show this multicultural cuddle-fest how to kick ass." He's a strong proponent of the "more dakka" combat strategy.

Being unfamiliar with the Savage Worlds rules, I may have made some mistakes in making my character, so let me know if I have. My advances were spent on advancing Shooting, and the Trademark Weapon edge.

    That is certainly a Heavy.

    Grand Lodge

Okay, I find David Wright intriguing... could you please explain how much is exactly 'Nuff Dakka?

    More Dakka

For whatever reason, I am just LOVING the idea of Jackalyn and David in the same squad.

Well, at the moment it seems everyone who's posted in has either withdrawn or posted their characters. I was going to close recruitment tonight at midnight, but since everyone has their characters in now (or has withdrawn), I'm going to go ahead and close recruitment now. I'll take a few hours and look over everyone's submitted characters, and I'll get back to everyone with my selections later tonight.

    Good luck @ all!

Having looked over the submissions again, I'm happy to tell you all I've made my decisions. The players I will be asking to join this game are:

    Borax Bohan
    Gavril Vascilescu
    Jackalyn Chase
    Jacob Farrell
    Kristophe Kristophson
    Rosa Vasquez

Will you six please report to Discussion for me please? The rest of you, I thank you for your submissions, and better luck next time. If I need new players in the near future, I will recruit from you all before opening up recruitment again. Sorry you didn't make the cut, and I hope you all have better luck in the future. Thanks again!

    Congrats everyone.
