Alazandaru planted the Desnan butterfly upon the bed, cleaned up the blood somewhat and placed a few of the dead birds around the human blood, in order to make it look like several of the birds were killed there, rather than a man. Once content with his handiwork, he tied off the bleeding throat of the dead man and strapped the body to his powerful frame with rope. Not wanting to leave evidence of his escapades, he attempted the climb down bare-handed, using his climbers kit where necessary but not using rope tied to the rookery.

As a final thought, he took the holy symbol to Iomedae and badly damaged it, leaving it on the floor against a wall, as though tossed aside.

Climb: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33

"I've no real talent at drawing," Tatya sighs indolently, "and it would take an accelerant and time we don't have to get the proportions right. Still, fire ought to draw their attention ... and if Alazandaru is as clever as he thinks he is, he might give himself an alibi as a friendly neighbor trying to douse the flames if he's seen in the open."

Pharast is spring, right? Are there any trees around that aren't too green yet? She can use burning gaze to set one within 30 feet afire, after first running her dancing lights figure over to it.

"Very well then. Accomplish what you can. And I am positive Alazandaru will adapt as necessary. He has no choice."

There are trees nearby, yes. There defense concerns are for the opposite direction.

Don't think game is waiting on me. I'm hoping 33 was sufficient to climb with a body strapped to back :P.

I think it's with King Mark for scene wrap-up?
Bostarg / Jonas is ostensibly entertaining Marlowe, but I didn't see any posts around that - so I assume that's being hand-waved off-screen.

King of Talingarde

Sorry, Bostarg. I was handwaving that part of things. Was there something you wanted to accomplish?

King of Talingarde

Making a couple of assumptions.

Tatya sends her lights towards a tree in front of the keep, setting it aflame with her gaze. It's clear from the keep that attention has been diverted to their activities. The two make their escape as a party is assembled to investigate the activities outside.

Meanwhile, Alazandaru climbs down the side of the tower, the body of Mad Martin strapped behind him. The distraction on the other side gives him ample opportunity to scale the side to the ground below and make his own way back to Aldencross, dumping the body on the way back.

An hour later, they all return back to the Lord's Dalliance, their activities finished.

The next morning, word has already spread to the town of the evening's events. The official word from the fortress was simply an act of vandalism had occurred near Balentyne, nothing more. But soldiers talk, and servants overhear. An assassin had infiltrated, attempting to kill Lord Havelyn in his sleep. Bugbears invaded the fortress. A devil attempted an assault against the keep. Soldiers had revolted. Everyone had a different story for what happened.

One thing was clear though, invading all the stories for it's kernel of truth. Captain Barhold had made his way into town on Lord Havelyn's request, headed to the mayor's house to speak with him. In addition, Mother Ryanne of the church of Iomedae as well as Hogan Gall, one of the more prominent Desnan's in town, were summoned by some of Barhold's men. The nature of the meeting was unknown, but rumors persisted.

HP 45/45, AC- 18, Touch- 14, Flat- 14, CMD- 21, Fort- +6, Ref- +9, Will- +2, Percep- +7, Init- +4

Having reported his success, Alazandaru posed a question to the others.

One of the Captains had made his way into town- perhaps it would be easier to ambush him between here and the fortress?

Taking some initiative, Alazandaru decided to attempt to eavesdrop on the meeting. Using his circlet to assume a third face and persona in case he was found out, he attempted to infiltrate the house using his formidable skill at climbing and stealth. He removed his chain shirt, trusting in his talents to see him through. He hid knives on his person though, just in case.

If necessary, Alazandaru will down a potion of Vanish to get past any outer guards. Will include some take 10's to make it easier to resolve for GM.

Applicable Rolls-

Take 10 on Stealth, Climb and Acrobatics for 22, 26 and 22 respectively.

The Mayor's House

Alazandaru manages to sneak his way into the house owned by the mayor of Aldencross, no easy task. The guards set to watch are alert at the front and the rear. And they are particularly alert, a sign they appear to be expecting trouble. A window open provides a means of access. to the interior.

Finding the residents of the house requires little effort, simply following the shouting. Four distinct voices are heard. Going by the conversation, you are able to identify Captain Barhold, both from his similar speeh of his brother Bellam Barhold at the inn, as well as his military way of speaking. The only woman present, Mother Ryanne is also easily identified. The final two become clear during the discussion, Hogan Gall and the mayor of Aldencross Owain Welsh.

Barhold and Hogan are the two speaking loudly, arguing back and forth regarding the attack on Balentyne. It's clear that while Barhold doesn't accuse Hogan of being involved, he believes someone from his flock is. He demands of him the names of all Desnans currently in the city, which Hogan refused to provide. Owain says very little during the conversation, obviously deferring to Barhold on all issues, while Ryanne attempts to maintain the peace and to discuss the situation like adults.

After several minutes of arguing, Hogan suddenly calls out, "ENOUGH! Take me to Lord Havelyn, I will explain my situation to him. It's obvious you have already made up your mind on events and I will not sell out my people."

A moment of silence passes before Barhold responds, "It sounds like that's the only option left to us. Guards, escort Master Gall to the ground floor and keep an eye on him." Alazandaru manages to keep out of sight as Hogan is escorted downstairs. "Master Welsh, I thank you for the use of your home for this discussion. I hope you don't mind imposing on you for a short while longer. The Mother and I have a few things to discuss before we take our leave. Excuse us."

Do you want to continue listening or head out?

HP 45/45, AC- 18, Touch- 14, Flat- 14, CMD- 21, Fort- +6, Ref- +9, Will- +2, Percep- +7, Init- +4

Continue listening. Lord Havelyn is the master of Balentyne right?

King of Talingarde

That is correct.

After the others leave, Barhold speaks to Ryanne in a hushed voice. "I need you to learn what you can in town. Lord Havelyn isn't convinced this is the work of the Desnans, but I disagree. We need a list of those who come to temple, and preferably those who do not. I'll have a couple soldiers sent to help you in any way you need, just keep us updated.

"A couple of Varning's riders are going to be heading out and establish a line of communication until we can replace our aviary. But that could take weeks to get in place."

Barhold clears his throat before continuing. "Another thing. It's very strange this happened when that Marlowe came into town. See what you can find out about him. I might just be paranoid, but I don't like it. Keep us informed." With that, Barhold makes his own way downstairs.

HP 45/45, AC- 18, Touch- 14, Flat- 14, CMD- 21, Fort- +6, Ref- +9, Will- +2, Percep- +7, Init- +4

Alazandaru will make haste back to the others and report the conversation in full detail.

I think we should ambush Captain Barhold and spread further misdirection... Perhaps we can kidnap Hogan to stir up the Desnan's as well?

Not in use

Overhearing stories, Jonas joined a conversation here or there - always adding circumstantial discussion... but also managing somehow to leave the listeners more certain that the truth of the stories were along the Desnan angle rather than any other.
____

At Alazandaru's confirmation that Captain Barhold himself had left the fort Bostarg was wary, yet hopeful. Nodding affirmation to Alazandaru "Aye, if we can get means to isolate him... opportunities must be seized where open and free."

He has no objections to the rogue's attempts to gain further information through subterfuge and observation. As Alazandaru returns he nods "Perhaps time to make use of the Widow's house? If he is going to speak to Marlowe... then I will draw him off and bring him to you there."

Jonas then situates himself within easy sight of Marlowe... and observes surreptitiously.

So Jonas convinces Barhold to follow him to the Widow's house through Bluff and Bluster. Then dogpile and assassinate him.

HP 45/45, AC- 18, Touch- 14, Flat- 14, CMD- 21, Fort- +6, Ref- +9, Will- +2, Percep- +7, Init- +4

Alazandaru had objections for Bostarg to consider.

They are taking Hogan to Belentyne however, so it sounds like he is with an armed escort. Barhold had guards as his disposal. If Hogan is allowed to reach the fortress he will likely help tensions die down. If he is seen to be taken there by Captain Barhold and then the group guarding him is slain... It further implicates the Desnans; especially if Hogan is not among those killed. We should strike on the road between this town and the fortress, now!

It doesn't read like Barhold intends to speak to Marlowe now.

King of Talingarde

Quick post before heading to work to help plan. Based on observations by Alazandaru and Bostarg, Barhold came into Aldencross with 6 men. 2 are staying with Ryanne and 2 are handling things in town. So it will be Barhold and 2 soldiers escorting Hogan. Barhold charged Ryanne with learning more of Marlowe and the other Desnans. Since they are attempting to leave town quietly and without drawing attention, it will take some time for them to get on the road. So you could grab Tatya from the farmhouse if you wanted.

Yeah - reading back I mis-read that

Bostarg hears Alazandaru's words and measures them "Aye, that would be fair. We must be quick to get ahead of them though..."

King of Talingarde

I believe the plan is to stop Barhold on his way back to Balentyne, correct? I just switched the Roll 20 map to a probable ambush site if you would like to set up for it. Barhold will be coming from the left side of the map.

Okay, let me get this straight: Bostarg intercepts Barhold at some point, convinces him to follow himself to the widow's house, which is where the rest of us are awaiting an ambush, right?

@KM: When you say you have us set up for a probable ambush, it looks like we are inside Balentyne. I would guess we're just using that map as the "widow's house" just to keep it simple? 'Cause that's the only map I'm seeing. And that would probably NOT be the best place to ambush anybody. Just sayin'. :)

King of Talingarde

I had though road ambush and set that up. If that's not what's popping up, then I'd wager I did it wrong :p I'll set up a house ambush when I get home this evening, and apologies!

HP 45/45, AC- 18, Touch- 14, Flat- 14, CMD- 21, Fort- +6, Ref- +9, Will- +2, Percep- +7, Init- +4

I think there is a misunderstanding. Barhold is leaving the town with an important Desnan in tow and he is accompanied by guards. Alazandaru is strongly urging the group to kill him and his group on the road between the fortress and the town, which has a bonus effect of implicating the Desnans! Will probably have to dispose of the Desnan too though.

So he's not on his way to Balentyne? He's on his way out? Well that would definitely be easier to get him to head the opposite direction of Balentyne for sure. :p Does this change the plan of drawing him to the widow's house? Or do we just jump him somewhere in between here and there?

Also, should we disguise ourselves as 'ourselves'? Or as a totally different person? I highly think we should stay away from our current disguises in town.

King of Talingarde

To clarify, Barhold is leaving the town (Aldencross) and heading to the fortress (Balentyne).

Female Human Witch 3 / Rogue (Poisoner) 1

He's on his way from the town (Aldencross) to the fort/wall (Balentyne). I'm not exactly sure where the Widow Dressler's house is, but my impression was that it wasn't on the road between town and the fort but more "out in the countryside" somewhere. Otherwise, why the need for someone to go out and check on her/take her supplies once a month? Surely there's plenty of daily traffic between Balentyne and Aldencross.

Partially ninja'd by DM. Also, in re the town and the fort and the road between them:

King Markadian V wrote:
The distance between the two isn't clearly defined. It's listed as taking about 1 hour to get from Aldencross to Balentyne overland, but with the secret tunnel, that's a long distance. It does further say to clarify that the path zig-zags back and forth so it's not a straight shot, which is why an hour. There are places to hide on the approach, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Oh, okay, I see. And that's what I was thinking about the widow's house as well. I was wondering how we were going to get him out to nowhere's ville.

Okay, he's going from town to the castle. Which I think was determined to be about an hour walk, I think? And if traffic in between is busy, then we're screwed. Hard to kill everyone. I guess we take a shot that there isn't that much? If there isn't, then we take our chances. If there is, then what? Abort?

Edit: Okay, well that answers that. Well that would seem to give us a bit better odds. I guess it would still depend on the level of folks traveling through. You'd think there really isn't that much; it's not like you're going from one market to another.

Bostarg leaves the most of the planning to the more martially able among them. He conceals himself behind a stone and keeps rapier in hand as they wait.

King of Talingarde

The ambush set, our villains patiently wait for Barhold and his men to come along the path. After a short while, they do indeed come. Barhold leading the way with Hogan behind him. His two soldiers bring up the rear. As they walk, suddenly Hogan stops and looks ahead, followed by Barhold following his gaze. He yells out, his hand going to his greatsword, "Who's hiding in the bushes there? Come out now."

Behind one of the guards places his own hand on his blade while another goes to a horn. If it would carry to Balentyne is a question, though help would doubtful arrive quickly.

They seem to have noticed Morthos in the bushes, but they have no active indication of noticing anyone else. No weapons are yet drawn (mostly flavor text above). So we're at round 1. Bostarg, Morthos, Alazandaru are up.

Dang. And dang. Man this is not good. Well heck. Seeing how my action is going to affect none of the others, I might as well go ahead and go.

Irritated he's unable to get to the main target, Morthos throws a bit of venom in his direction. "I'm over here, fool! You dare RUN from me, coward!" As he yells toward the goody two shoes so-called hero, Morthos is forced to deal with the two in his way.

Attack the one directly east of me.

As Barhold nearly cuts Alazandaru in two, the heavy sword's blow leaving him barely standing, Tatya begins to panic. This plan was foolishness! The whole mission will fail. What punishment will the Cardinal devise for such abject failure? Should I run? Where can I run that they won't find me? How long before they break Alazandaru if he is taken alive and he betrays us all?

Feeling that their only hope is the poison on Alazandaru's blades, she moves toward the road and fixes Barhold with her evil eye, cursing his resistance to her soporific concoction. In her guise as a Desnan guerilla, she countermands the Captain's order: "No, Brother Hogan! This way to rescue! Only the Iomedaeans need fear our Lady's vengeance."

Should have been clearer with my hastily posted action last round, but Alazandaru tossed the crossbow aside with the intention to use his move action + swift to draw his knives.

Barely standing, his mithril shirt cut open and a gaping wound to his abdomen bleeding freely, Alazandaru was almost too much in shock to consider his options. In a normal fight, the warrior would have considered a retreat, using some of the magic on his person to become invisible, bolster his defences and get back into the fight.

Now, however, Alazandaru was fighting for his life; and fighting to even remain standing. He brought both of his daggers into play, his desperation that the poison would bring the Captain down matching Tatya's, perhaps exceeding it.

TWF Attack #1 VS AC-2: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 9 - 2 = 20
Damage (Poison Applied): 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
TWF Attack #2 VS AC-2: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 9 - 2 = 22
Damage (Poison Applied): 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Even as he fought, a tiny voice played out in his head; one that sounded not dissimilar to his great mentor, Sir Balin.

You are being cut down like the treacherous scum you are... you deserve this...

If the captain resists both poison doses Alazandaru will 5 foot step towards Bostarg.

King of Talingarde

Morthos's strike at the guard is deflected by his armor, turning the powerful strike into a glancing one. Barhold momentarily turns at his words, "I have never run from a fight in my entire life, and I won't start here!"

Alazandaru sinks the first dagger in to the Captain, a grunt of pain on his face but a superficial wound at best. He shrugs the strike aside, but turns to yell at Morthos, Alazandaru taking the moment to strike with his other weapon. Once again he shrugs away most of the pain, but then realizes his movements are becoming sluggish. The poison takes effect. He feebly attempts to raise his greatsword, but drops it falling to Alazandaru's feet. "Desnan....scum."

Hogan stands confused, uncertain how to respond to Tatya's words and the fate of Barhold.

(Still need Bostarg for 1. Barhold is down for 1 minute)

Stunned at first by the casual almost effortless blow that came near to cleaving Alazandaru in twain... Bostarg regained his composure as the Captain succumbed to Tatya's foul wares. Left hand shaking and right hand whiteknuckled as he gripped his rapier tightly Bostarg channelled his will to casually walk forward and spin honeyed words at the soldiers and Hogan both "She speaks the truth Hogan, come with us... you know it not but these were to be your executioners."

His feet take him to interpose between the prone Barhold and the remaining soldiers... and his blade is readied.

Hogan listens to Bostarg's words, his confusion apparent on his face. Seeing the form of Barhold on the ground, the two soldiers engaged with Morthos, he looks first to Tatya, then to Bostarg. "Who are you, and why are you helping me?" He cautiously approaches, trying to put some distance, and trees, between him and the soldiers.

One of the guards swings at Morthos and misses, while the other turns and attempts to talk Hogan down. "Come now, Hogan, you don't really think we'd try to kill you now? Sure, there's some bad blood between our religions but not enough to go about killing anyone." His words latch onto Hogan, not quite enough to convince him but enough to cause doubt.

Round 3-

Still barely standing, Alazandaru knelt down, as much for the support of the ground as for his next move; which was to slit open Barhold's throat.

Almost numb with relief, Tatya forces her rubbery legs to move, as she comes up behind Alazandaru and tries to find an place on his shoulder to lay her trembling hand that's not covered with his own blood. "Well done," she murmurs, leaving the gnome's honeyed tongue to snare the Desnan. "My Master has a balm for your wounds."
