Ramachandra steps back into a corner of the room and keeps an eye open for any surprises that may pop out at them. He decides to keep watch for anything creatures that the others might not notice due to their focus on the containers.
Use my deathwatch spell-like ability to scan the room for unexpected creatures.
I'll keep a watch. If you would like some divine guidance, please come to me or Shashi.
Tathane Halfbarrel

"Ah ha! As I suspected." Tathane pulls a dagger from his belt and twirls it around his finger a couple times before putting it back. "Traps. That one there." He points to the grey one. "The other chests are locked but seem to be trap free. And in that jar is the key. It looks like. But I wouldn't want to touch that liquid in the jar. It smells acidic. Which is strange cause I would expect it to corrode the key."
He looks at the basket. "That thing looks pretty normal but I'd be cautious about opening it. Does anyone have a long pole or something that they could use to lift the lid?"

Doughlas

After stopping his Detect Magic concentration, "Afraid I have nothing with an extended reach to flip up the wicker lid."
PHB says a shovel as a weapon is a club, which is one-handed. so that sounds like a military hand shovel. but for a grave digger, they would be using the normal sized shovels. for role play purposes would I be able to say it's the bigger 2-handed shovel for the extended reach?
unless someone else has like a spear or quaterstaff and then I could quit over thinking that :)
Esper Zevral
|
Esper, who is clearly holding a quarterstaff, offers her services.
"I can try, if you like. But you should all step back."
Once everyone has backed up, Esper tries to lift the lid of the basket off with her quarterstaff.
Does anyone have mage hand to lift out the key?
| The World's Most Interesting GM |
Esper, (whose quarterstaff is probably not 25-feet long--let's 'move' people!) can easily knock the top off the basket when she's in range. It's lot's more difficult from across the room. ;)
unless someone else has like a spear or quaterstaff and then I could quit over thinking that :)
Even big shovels aren't really as long as spears or quarterstaves (5+ feet long) unless you are talking about a shortspear (stated to be a yard long in the rules).
Perrine Ravella

”This is getting boring. Let’s get to it. How about I just pour the acid out in the floor, not on Einarr? Then we can get the key and figure out this obvious puzzle.”
Tathane Halfbarrel
|
"Let's not rush too much here. What if there's a snake or something in the basket? Esper, can you just knock the lid off? You'll have to stand a little close to it."
Tathane stays back near the glass jar and leaves room for someone else to approach the basket.
Einarr Bjornson
|
"Well one of yous said the water thing in that blue jar aint water but an acid. But it does have a key at the bottom that has not been eaten away by the acid, so that may be our key. How about I toss the glass jar at the wall over there in the corner where no one is so no one gets wet.?"
Esper Zevral
|
Since everyone seems ready, Esper approaches the basket and flips its lid off with her staff.
Einarr Bjornson
|
Seeing the Keleshite move into position to tumble the basket, Einarr follows suite with axe and shield ready.
| The World's Most Interesting GM |
Esper: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
The top of the basket falls to the floor. Looking inside Einarr and Esper spy a blue key amid a tangle of brightly-colored cloth at the bottom. The key seems to have been sculpted of stone like marble rather than made of metal.
Other folks doing things? Remember, even if you have played this before (maybe especially if you have played this before) your character would still probably be doing in-character things that he or she thought appropriate to the situation. There is difference between character knowledge and player knowledge. The latter should not interfere with posting something. Remember too, this is pretend after all. ;)
Doughlas
|
With nothing popping out of the basket, Doughlas picks up the glass jar and pours out the liquid in the far corner, slowly to avoid splatter. Once most of the liquid is out of the jar, Doughlas then moves over to the side to shake the key out of the jar.
All new to me, was trying to hide from any surprises :)
Perrine Ravella

Once the two keys are procured, Perrine moves forward into the room to look closely at them. ”Two keys right here and several chests. Which key for which chest is the question, though?”
Would someone move me up to the basket, please?

Doughlas has the jeweled one.
Would someone move me up to the basket, please?
got yah
Thanks Doughlas!
Esper Zevral

Esper pulls out the blue stone key and the colourful cloths with interest. "Certainly not what I was expecting..."
She passes the key to Tathane. "Any idea which chest this will fit into?"
Then she examines the cloths for any hidden clues.

Amid the cloth in the bottom of the basket, next to the key, is an agitated-looking brilliant emerald-green, orange-eyed serpent.

Esper Zevral

"Snake!" Esper exclaims, reaching for her quarterstaff.
Tathane Halfbarrel
|
"Aha! I knew there would be a snake in there!" Tathane grins as if he had just revealed the world's most important secret. At the same time he unslings his bow and readies it. "Let's deal with this snake first, when we'll sort out the keys."
| The World's Most Interesting GM |
The tiny green snake at the bottom of the big basket, moves it's head slightly and tastes the air with its tongue.
Then it casts quickened meteor swarm, before it plane shifts away. Well, that's probably its readied action. ;)
Tathane, you either need to move the basket down to floor level or climb up on something to aim down into the basket otherwise the snake has total cover from your bow. And for that matter Perrine isn't tall enough to see into the basket unless the basket is at ground-level or she is being carried or standing on the shelf.

Ok. Good to know. I'm not shooting at it yet. I'm waiting for it to come out.

There are 25 5' areas in the room using guidance, Rama can check 1/round. It takes a total of 25 rounds to investigate all of them (about 2.5 minutes).
Big wicker basket Nothing about the basket has moved yet, but now it seems to be staring at you, its metaphorical eyes laughing at the group's hesitation, daring them to try something--or are you chicken, punk?

Doughlas moves south and gets his mace out. "Too bad I already poured out the acid," said with a shrug of the shoulders.

"We need the key." Esper reminds Perrine.
If the basket's not down on the floor right now, Esper will move it down to the floor level.
Then she jabs her quarterstaff into the big wicker basket in an attempt to wallop the snake.

Big wicker basket The basket's metaphorical expression changes to one of pretend indignation, and mockery. Oh, so you think you're tough, huh? 'Look at me I'm so tall. I've got stick.' Well, you know what you can do with your stick lady.
The snake diesn't seem to be very happy either.

| The World's Most Interesting GM |
That is actually a bit shocking considering that 'mesmerizing snakes' is an actual thing. I mean here I thought of anywhere in the adventure this would be Esper's moment! Anyhow like a racist caricature of a native of Australia in a Bugs Bunny cartoon, Esper jabs her pole into the basket to similar effect. Shouting: "Unga bunga bunga!" is optional.
Esper Zevral

Right? Haha. Unfortunately, Esper will not lower herself to shouting 'Unga bunga bunga' thereby negating any potential circumstance bonuses for the classic stereotypes of her people...

Douglas smashes the basket.
Einarr totally destroys the basket, the rags, the snake, a few stone floor tiles, and perhaps the stone key. Bits of all of the above fly all over the room.
Amid the carnage, the party recovers the important part of the blue stone key!
Doughlas

"I'm thinking of using the stone key with the red chest and the brass key on the wooden chest. No real deduction, just thinking runes and stone go together with the red chest. Then the wooden chest has copper bands and we have a brass key."

Ignoring the swirling magical glyph, Doughlas tries the lock on the red chest with the remains of the blue stone key.
Then, using the bejeweled key from the container of liquid he tries the copper and wood chest.
The key doesn't work.
Doughlas

does the key stay in the lock?
Doughlas puts his hand in the chest.

Which one (both questions)? Though it seems my last post didn't all stick either, so to finish...
The red chest opens, it is empty save for a jeweled scepter (essentially rod-sized) with yet another key worked into its filigreed top.

Esper let's out an undignified little shriek as Einarr smashes the basket and tiles at her feet. Wide eyed, she fans herself for a moment, before regaining her composure.
Lucky I didn't lose a foot! Oh, my...
As she recovers, she watches the ensuing key exchange with curiosity. She steps back, allowing the others to fiddle with the chests and mysterious keys, not wanting to be beside whatever the next thing to be horribly destroyed is...
