Unknown

Returning to the branching passage Alma leads the way south. The weeping stops, but from the darkness the sound faint footsteps and scratching can be heard.

The passage opens up into a natural cavern. The ceiling disappears into the darkness and the stone worked walls turn into rough rock sides. A faint sickly odor grows stronger further into the cavern. Not the smell of unwashed goblins, but a smell of something rotten.

Updated map

"This is the smell of death. Alma, are we alone in here?"

Male Human Paladin/2 HP 28/33

does my detect evil have to be focused on a specific person/item? I was reading that it can act like the detect evil spell. So if that is true, it is something like a cone shape. my reference:http://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/3635/how-does-a-paladins-d etect-evil-ability-work So assuming I can use it in this manner

Detect Evil

He walks slowly into the opening cavern. With a small prayer to Imodae to sense the evil that seems lurking. Readying his blade to strike anything that may strike. Move to AL41

Unknown

Moving in cautiously the light from Alma's sword casts shadows dancing back and forth across the room and across the cavern overhead. Nooks and rock formations reflecting the light at odd angles.

Ahead at the edge of the light is some kind of altar. Chained to one side is a man in only a loincloth. Scabs, cuts, and bruises cover his body. The man is unmoving. On the other side tied to the altar with ropes is a dwarf in a similar condition though looks to be at least partially conscious. The dwarf is also gagged. Farther back in the darkness the sound of many small creatures can be heard, rats?

Alma:
At first you sense nothing but as you move into the room a strong aura of evil nearly overwhelms your senses. It is emanating from the altar.

Warren:
The altar has some familiar looking markings, but you are unable to place the deity to whom it might belong.

I'll need 3 more knowledge (religion) rolls from you

Updated map

Male Human Paladin/2 HP 28/33

DM: Does this look like the same person I saw in my vision?

Concerned with the strong sense of evil, speaking in a hushed voice, "There is great evil coming from the altar. We are not safe here."

Pausing for a moment. He then slowly walks towards the dwarf; ready to defend himself. Upon reaching the dwarf, he uses his glowing long sword to edge the gag out of his mouth. Barely over a whisper, Alma speaks directly to the dwarf, "Sir, who are you? Why are you chained here?

Detect Evil on the Dwarf

Alma continues to scan the area, wary of the evil in the room.

Unknown

Alma:
Yes, this is the man you saw in your vision.

As Alma moves up to the altar two small creatures drop down from the rocky ledges above landing next to Warren and Markov.

A tangle of scaly avian limbs furiously beats double pairs of vulture-like wings, they peer about with a fiendish looking horned skull-head. Each holds a small spear in clawed hand.

Warren and Irina will get to act in the suprise round, Markov and Alma do not

Warren:
You recognize these as gaav's, a type of lesser devil. They are capable of breathing forth noxious fumes, but don't know anything beyond that.

Warren, then the creatures, then Irina

Updated map

Male Dwarf Druid/3

Trom spits on the ground to remove the gag's fetid taste from his mouth before speaking in a fervent whisper. "Perhaps I'll tell ye when we get out of here. Untie me and let's go"

I know its Warren and then Irina, but posting my next action anyways.

Alma strikes down on the ropes with his glowing sword.

Attack w/ Power Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 7 - 1 - 1 = 25
Attack w/ Power Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 1 - 1 = 22
damage: 1d8 + 3 + 2 - 1 + 2 + 3 + 1d8 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 2 - 1 + 2 + 3 + (2) = 15

haha, I shall now be known as Alma the great slayer of Rope :)

Warren steps towards Markov to avoid flanking and swings at one of the demons.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Unknown

Warren attacks the gaav that dropped down next to him. Despite hit the creature squarely the blade seems to refuse to cut into the devils skin and leaves only a minor scratch.

Each of the creatures lets out a billowing cloud of foul vapor from its horned head. Warren and Markov are enveloped by the nauseous fumes.

Each needs to make a DC 14 fortitude save or be sickened. Sickened applies a -2 to attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, ability checks, and skill checks.

Init for Markov: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Irina is up, then the surprise round is over and we start normal rounds. So Warren and Markov may also act.

Trom go ahead and roll init as well, though you are still tied up currently.

Updated map

Irina turns her gaze on the uninjured devil, willing it to fall asleep.
Will DC 15

Male Dwarf Druid/3

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Unknown

Will save: 1d20 ⇒ 3

The nightmarish creature standing next to Markov falls to the floor unconscious.

Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Alma, it looks as though I cannot hurt these creatures. I suggest you ask your god for aid against them.

As he finishes speaking, Warren steps over the sleeping creature and cuts its throat.

Step into its space, coup de grace

Damage: 3d8 + 3 ⇒ (7, 4, 7) + 3 = 21

Male Human Paladin/2 HP 28/33

Is this considered a Disease effect? thus rendering me immune? And/or since I have the sickened mercy, does that in anyway render me immune?

Alma wrote:

No and no, although if you use LoH while you are sickened, it will remove the condition.

I think Markov is up now. Hopefully he's still around.

Unknown

Warren steps over the sleeping creature and rams his blade through it.

Fort save 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

The devils remains unmoving, a black ichor pouring from the grievous wound.

Fort save for Markov against the noxious breath 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Markov looks ill, having breathed in some of the fumes. He will be sickend for 1d4 ⇒ 4 rounds.

Markov steps further away from the other gaav and fires a bolt at it. Attack: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 1 = 7.

The remaining creature flapping awkwardly charges towards Irina with its spear held before it.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

The spear catches her in the hip.

Updated map

Party may act, including Alma's cutting the dwarf free.

Warren runs forward to the unconscious man and heals him.

Swift action for 10' extra movement, Move (Escape route avoids AoO) to AR37, CLW

CLW: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

"Nnnnh!" Irina cries out, her face going white as the spear skewers skin and muscle and slams against bone.

She grips her morning star and levels her gaze at the devil, willing it, too, to fall asleep.

Male Dwarf Druid/3

Trom will cast Cure Light Wounds on himself. 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Unknown

Will save 1d20 ⇒ 7

The second devil falls asleep in front of Irina.

Alma cuts the ropes free of the dwarf as Warren runs over to heal the man chained to the altar. The man comes awake with a groan.

The dwarf works the words of a spell to heal some of his wounds.

A tiny red skinned winged humanoid with the tail of a scorpion appears next to Markov, its tail lashing forward to strike him.

Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

The stinger does not penetrate Markov's leather armor though.

Warren:
This creature is an imp, one of the least of all devil kind. Your experience has not taught you anything beyond that though.

Party may act

Updated map

Warren moves (AO35) back to the new opponent and cuts at it.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 ← Silver will bypass its DR if it's a normal imp

Irons will back away from the downed devils, whimpering slightly as the spear point dislodges from her flank. She presses a hand against the wound and wills the injury to close.

Heal hex on self: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 It seems her will has faded slightly and her hand still comes away bloody.

Male Human Paladin/2 HP 28/33

After freeing the druid, Alma quickly moves to aid Irina AP35.

With the foul demon immobilized, Alma seeks to send it back to hell where it belongs. he drops his longsword and shield and wields his great sword.

Coup de Gras: 2d10 + 6 - 1 - 1 ⇒ (7, 1) + 6 - 1 - 1 = 12

I thought greatswords did 2d6 base damage? Bastard swords do 1d10.

Male Human Paladin/2 HP 28/33

I have it listed as 1d10. But I will double check. I think it goes up to 2d6 when i am enlarged.

Unknown

They do 2d6 when medium sized (1d10 if small). Coup de grace is a full round action. So at best you can make a single attack since you had to move to get in range.

Male Human Paladin/2 HP 28/33

ok I will update the damge then. I will take the round to get in position and the try it next turn.

Unknown

It wakes up this turn and won't be helpless anymore.

TowerOfTheHeavens wrote:

It will still, however, be prone, injured, and surrounded. Could be worse...for the party

Male Human Paladin/2 HP 28/33

ahh if he's getting up next round, I will go ahead and just move to him and take a swing this round.

Alma taking advantage of the demon's prone position raises his great sword
for a forceful blow.
Power attack Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 4 - 1 = 23
Damage: 2d6 + 3 + 2 - 1 - 1 ⇒ (1, 4) + 3 + 2 - 1 - 1 = 8 [ooc]Silver Blade if that helps bypass any DR]

Male Dwarf Druid/3

Trom steps forward and mutters and incantation. A hyena appears next to the scorpion-tailed monster. Trom to AQ38, hyena AM36.

Unknown

Alma's blade strikes the creature, but the edge feels dulled, unable to cut deeply.

Warren moves to defend Markov, but the tiny imp laughs maniacally at him as his swings passes overhead.

Markov steps away from the creature, leveling his crossbow at it. Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Damage: 1d8 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

But is unable to inflict any damage on it.

Trom begins an incantation. Summoning is a full round action, the hyena will appear at the start of your next turn and can act then as well.

The imp steps back away from Warren and disappears from sight.

The prone devil leaps back to its feet Warren and Alma may take AoO's and launches itself into the air, flying 30' over Trom's head. It lets out an angry hiss as it does so.

Updated map

Party may act

Male Human Paladin/2 HP 28/33

What kind of evil is this that I cannot make bleed? Alma thinks to himself in frustration.

As the devil gets back on his feet Alma strikes at him again.

Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 1 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 - 1 - 1 = 23
Damage: 2d6 + 3 + 2 - 1 - 1 ⇒ (2, 3) + 3 + 2 - 1 - 1 = 8

Irina pulls out a tanglefoot bomb and hurls it up at the devil.

Staring up at the creature, Warren speaks slowly and clearly, his words laced with magic and power. Come back down from there.

Casting command to make it drop prone this round. DC 14 will.

Unknown

Alma and Warren both inflict superficial wounds on the devil as it takes to the air.

Irina hurls a tanglefoot bag at the flying beast.
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Sticky strands burst from the bag as it erupts, hampering the creatures ability to fly.

Warren commands the creature to come down in a voice empowered by his deity.
Will Save: 1d20 ⇒ 7
The Gaav will drop to the ground on its turn. The tanglefoot bag will prevent it from taking to the air again until the condition is removed.

toweroftheheavens said wrote:

Ok. The hyena appears at AQ38 instead then. Trom will cast flare (dazzled 1 minute DC 15 fort negates spell resistance yes) on the Gaav that is descending towards him. The hyena will prepare an action to attack the Gaav when it comes within reach.

Unknown

Fort save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Markov loads another crossbow bolt but does not fire, the other worldly protections on the devil making it unlikely it would hurt the creature anyway.

At Warren's command the vulture like devil drops to the ground, falling prone. It lashes out at Trom with its spear.

Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 7 - 4 - 2 = 19

Cursed for his blasphemy...

Alma clumsily swings his greatsword as the gaav drops from the air, mistiming his attack the blade whistles through thin air.

Warren has better luck in connecting, but is unable to pierce the creatures protections.

The hyena proves more successful than both, its teeth finding hold on its second attack and tearing away fetid skin. The wound oozes with a pus like liquid.

Markov is up.
