Tomb of Horrors? (Inactive)

Game Master leinathan

The PCs are drawn together to tackle the most impenetrable tomb known. Will they survive its deadly traps and find its incredible reward?

I've gotten somewhat addicted to this, and I've been thinking of a short, non-campaign adventure to put some players through that I have, when I seized upon an excellent idea!

THE TOMB OF HORRORS

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone is interested in being subjected to the aforementioned tomb. It's a mind-rendingly difficult, and vintage, adventure for 4-6 9th-level characters, so that's what I'll be looking for.

Just looking for interest right now, if I get a few players posting I'll put up submission requirements and expectations. I'm free to answer and questions you might have, additionally.

Lantern Lodge

OMG yes!

Sczarni

Absolutely! I'm in!

Liberty's Edge

sounds like a killer dungeon crawl, replete with traps, beasties, and all sorts of nasty challenges, am I right? Haven't had a lot of those here. I'll throw my hat in and see what pops out.

I'd be interested.

Are you doing it in Pathfinder, or some version of D&D?

It's gonna be pathfinder, cause that's what I've got all the books to. The adventure was revised to D&D 3.5 (from its original old incarnation), but I'll convert it as necessary.

Aight, I think that's enough initial interest for me to put this stuff up here!

Somewhere under a lost and lonely hill of grim and
foreboding aspect lies a labyrinthine crypt filled with
terrible traps and not a few strong and ferocious
monsters to slay the unwary. Rich treasures both
precious and magical fill the crypt, but in addition to
the aforementioned guardians, some say a demilich still
wards his final haunt. (Be warned that tales told have it
that this being possesses powers that make him nearly
undefeatable!) Accounts relate that adventurers have an
extremely low probability of ever finding the chamber
where the demilich Acererak lingers, for the passages
and rooms of the tomb are fraught with terrible traps,
poison gases, and magical protections. Furthermore, the
demilich has hidden his lair so well, that even those
who avoid the pitfalls likely will not locate their true
goal. So only large and well-prepared parties of the
bravest and strongest should even consider the attempt,
and if they do locate the tomb, they must be prepared to
fail. Any expedition must be composed of characters of
high level and varied class. They must have magical
protections and weapons, and they should equip themselves
with every sort of device possible to ensure their
survival.

Daynen is right, it is a total dungeon crawl, and was designed to defeat even the cleverest of players, so I thought I'd give it a go here.

The Tomb was built by a lich, the legendary lich Acererak, who hasn't been seen or heard of in generations. Waves of adventurers have braved the tomb, but none have emerged. It's up to the PCs to finally venture inside the tomb and claim the treasures it has to offer. As a character creation note, I'm looking for fairly iconic or memorable characters here, the people to venture into the tomb should really be heroes of the highest caliber.

Any and all paizo races are allowed, as long as they are on the SRD. Any and all paizo classes are also allowed, save for antipaladin and gunslinger (no guns, and CE gets complicated).

Stats will be generated by 25 point buy.

Starting level is 9th, and starting wealth is 46,000gp as per the wealth table.

Two traits, chosen from the pathfinder "character traits web enhancement". HERE

As for backstory, I have a few expectations. There must be some justification for why you are 9th level and why you have decided to go to the tomb. Thirdly, there must be a reason why you either currently do not have an adventuring party (as you're clearly an adventurer-and if not, why are you suddenly adventuring?) or your connection to the other PCs should be built during the character creation process.

Don't hesitate to make powerful characters, cause it's a tough dungeon, but make them as interesting as you can also, please :D

Setting note: on Golarion, assuming it matters, the Tomb is probably getting placed in Cheliax, somewhere out-of-the-way.

Oh, I should also add on here something: If the players are amenable, and I'm attached enough to the characters, I might just fold them into some continuing adventures, perhaps the high-level portions of an AP that I've got. I haven't decided, it's just something that I considered that might catch a bit more interest.

I'm just wondering what death-recruitment is? :p

:D That hyphen was supposed to be a little pause but I suppose I was using it wrong, huh?

Hyphens between everything but there would probly have worked. But eh, I was just being picky :)

Dark Archive

Dotting for interest.

I'll be working up a Divination focused Wizard for this. Just a short bit of his backstory worked up so far: he was a member of a previous, quite successful adventuring group, until they ignored his warnings and decided it was the right time to assault that red dragon's lair. Needless to say, the dragon was quite happy to add their treasures to his multitude. Since my wizard didn't go, he's now on the look for a new adventuring group - one that will hopefully lend a little more credence to his harrow readings.

Interested. Not sure if I have the time to build a 9th level dude though...

I have a 9th level monk around here that actually almost fits into the setting with out modding anything. I'll get to modding it on Tuesday. His original back story is an undead hunter.

though I might change his feat progression to a different style focus.

Time to kill me some Demiliches!

olde school dungeon crawl? I've got an olde school magic-hating dwarf that seems like he would fit pretty well here. Just need to level him up, should be able to have that ready in a day or so.

2 quick questions:

- are you allowing alternate racial traits (ie, swap out "hardy" for something else)?
- any traits from outside that link allowed? ie, Glory of Old

Name: Scaleskin
Race: Human (Avistan)
Class: Druid (Saurian Shaman)
Alignment: N
Backstory: Scaleskin is from far northern Avistan, the realm of the Mammoth Lords. His father, Bloodeye, has taken ill with a disease contracted from contract with southern traders, and he will die within the month. When he does, his following will disintegrate, leaving the Mammoth Lords disunited and weak when Bloodeye fears that they must be stronger than ever before to ward off growing southern interest in their realm, and the orcs. Thus Scaleskin seeks to accomplish a great deed- to defeat the demi-lich prophesied to reside in his hideous vault of traps and terrors, as seen by the following's soothsayers. Inside, Scaleskin hopes as well to find a cure for his father's disease.
Personality: Gruff, blunt, and a holy terror when the rage comes upon him. He speaks and knows the rough wisdom of the north, and is well experienced from his travels along his land. As the son of a great leader he has often been used as a conduit for speaking with traders and others who would seek their fortune in the realm of the Mammoth Lords, and thus is acquainted with their tongues and ways. He does not dislike southerners, though he believes them soft and their customs bizarre. Perhaps this will change. He is married, and has six children- four girls and two boys.
Party role: Divine caster (Summoner)/Frontline melee.

I'm thinkin' maybe a TWF ranger. flurries of damage, ranged accuracy, and some good scouting. I'll see what I can cook up.

BTW, given this is a level 9 start, how do you feel about races with templates/advanced races, etc.?

I thinking a halfling trap monkey.
Probably a couple levels of rogue the rest some bard archtype.

The link isn't working?

Kairen Valos here, probably the most complicated paladin build I've ever made (two archetypes and an oath, lol,) but it looks awesome to me, and I'm ready to lead the charge, blitz some baddies, and knock the unholy CRAP out of the undead.

role: frontline offense, secondary healing, party face, smiter of all things evil and or/undead.

(That lich is so screwed.)

As long as you can show me on the SRD the trait, it's fine :D

Also, Daynen, which one are you talking about? I'm assuming you're meaning +ECL races, like say...vampire?
If you do, obviously you'd take a hit to # of class levels, but ask me which one first.

Jorr's Background

Spoiler:

Jorr hails from Lastwall. A product of an Orc raid on an outlying settlement. His mother was raped and subsequently impregnated with the bastard Orc seed. Being a devote follower of Iomedae she chose to keep the child and raised him under strict faith. After reaching adulthood he chose to shift his faith to the more vengeful Ragathiel and sought to purge evil from the world around him. Living in Lastwall there was plenty of "Evil" around and he soon found himself ranking among the elite Watchers of Gallowspire. Recently though he heard rumors long forgotten dungeon of evil. Deciding to stretch his legs he sets out to rid the world of this sinkhole of evil...

how would level adjustment work for taking a template?

Typically, templates have a CR adjustment attached to them, and that is what I would use. For my own example of vampire, for instance, you could play a 7th-level vampire character because of the CR adjustment of +2.

sweet

So ur allowing templates? If so ill redo a half-celestial pally

I'm allowing templates because I'm convinced they are not overpowered and I want to see just what kind of characters come out if all the options are available :D

Billybrainpan here dont have the full crunch yet but here is the back story for Aaron Curseborn.

Fluff:
Aaron was born to a tribe of mountain savages while they were in the middle of war with stone giants. however Aaron was very unusual the reason for this is that his father was not of the tribe but was a powerful Oni the had seduced and impregnated his mother. His father had hoped he would spread pain and chaos within the tribe but he worked past his evil heritage to redeem himself and eventually became the tribes most powerful warrior. this is not to say he didn't use his father's power. Aaron uses his demon blood to great effect wielding enormous weapons taken from even the largest of titans. however in recent years Aaron has taken to hunting the most vile of creatures, the undead. Aaron hates two things in the world above all else... demons and undead.
Aaron is an Advanced Oni-born tiefling barbarian (titan mauler) 8

So were shooting for CR 8s or 9s?

CR 8, as a 9th-level character is CR 8. Don't get TOO crazy.

By the way, I'd like to state that the advanced template won't be allowed. I didn't say all templates were allowed, I said to ask me XD Mostly what I had meant are racial templates, not simple templates.

Mind letting me know why your smite evil damage is +11 instead of +7?

Oh, also, it seems you're missing channel energy (4d6), two trained skills, your divine bond should be +2, your health should be 7d10+35, and if I'm reading everything right your CMB should be +14 and your CMD should be 25.

If I'm mistaken just let me know and why :D

Oh, and those of you who haven't yet submitted, remember that party balance is important and there's a dearth of one role and a lack of all of the rest :D Paladins are great but they can't do everything haha.

She has the Oath of Vengeance archetype which gives up channel energy. Divine Bond goes up every 3 levels after 5th, so wont be +2 till 8th level. Most of her skills i didn't mention, but i can list them all if u wish to see. smite damage is +11 due to silver smite bracers, they add +4 to your level for determining how many smites u have and smite damage. Hp is +4con, +1fav. class, +1 toughness each level so 7d10+42. CMB should be +14, changed that. CMD is 26, 10+7bab+1dex+7str+1deflect/25ff.

I have changed advanced to half-dragon, my logic behind this is that as supposed to just a powerful Oni my father was actually a red dragon with powerful oni blood that was in the form of a human. tieflings dont have to be direct descendants. breath weapon doesn't work if you dont have racial HD right?

Just an fyi i have no problem switching to something like an evangelist cleric, or bard if support is lacking.. Would rather the paladin, but open to w/e will get me a spot :)

Erm is there a particular reason you think you can wield a greatsword sized for a GARGANTUAN character? Your massive weapons ability lessens the penalty for wielding inappropriately sized weapons, but a Gargantuan sword is two sizes too big and you can't be wielding a two-handed weapon that's also inappropriately sized. I understand that you are Large, but the biggest weapon you can wield right now is a longsword (or other one-handed weapon) sized for a Huge creature in two hands. It essentially functions as a greatsword sized for your own size category.
