Jurin Kreedsön wrote:

Jurin is sitting on a barrel by the mess tent, casually flipping a burlap sack into the air and back into a shiny frying pan.

"Hello Beagle. Pancake?"

The Gnome's eyes light up at the sight of Jurin, and his mouth waters at the thought of a griddle, although the burlap does not appear to be too tasty.

"No, I've had my fill tonight. Just butted in where I had no business, and probably alienated someone who's important, and maybe even stepped on Cole's and Serra's toes when it's not my place. Gotta learn to focus on the recipe ahead and leave the main dishes to the more talented chefs." He sighs. "But that's neither here nor there. I'm sure all will do their duty when called."

He eyes the wise man curiously. "So, by the looks of it, you might have been well-done by the time you left the ovens below." Almost looks like being spit-roasted.

"Not all of us are knights, nor even wished what the Queen gave to us," Serra head bobs over towards Ely's direction. "The titles do more harm than good to those who do not want them nor support them. If they will not aid us, then we need not keep them."

"Like you said, we best serve ourselves and the Queen by succeeding: and we've succeed by doing things our own way. The sooner that we get these knights used to being unconventional and adaptive, the better off we'll be."

Jurin concentrates on his flapsack, sending it ever higher as he talks to Beagan.

"That's too bad, fiber is good for you. Learned that in the ovens. Yes, they spitted me and cooked me until I was tender. People and goats and demons and dragons, the things that tried to keep me from scones were many. Best thing to remember Beagle is that there are always people who want to help you with the cooking, but you can't let them. Only you know how to make the bacon right, only you know how the scones should taste. Need to break a few omelets before you get the best eggs, oh yes, but once you have the right pan..."

He catches the sack and shows his pan to Ragathiel's finest.

"You like? Non-stick, best thing I found down there. Killed a few unhappy customers with it, they don't like the flavor. Don't you worry my friend, we've got the favor of stones to see us through. Let Cole and Fatso play at being knights. You got the favor and the rabbit, that's all you need."

"I guess I'd best see to things then." He nods to Serra and heads out to see what the Knights and other support staff are doing. He does his best to stay out of the way, and he salutes back when saluted to (more or less), but he otherwise moves throughout he camp quietly, almost stealthily.

At the start of the second watch, he turns in and tries to get a few hours sleep. If nothing else arises, he'll get up early and walk the camp again during the last shift of the night trusting in his magic to keep the worst of the fatigue from his body.

Eli finishes the Greengold applejack with his kith. "Marcus, I think this is as good a time as any to hear what you experienced that made you travel all this way, and continue to travel with me, into the Worldwound. Did Erastil talk to you?"

...

Eli takes advantage of the swirling mass of paladins to sleep as best he can to rise early, and perform his morning ritual, and ready his horse for a new day's travel.

"Not Erastil, No...." Marcus says, with an unusual solemnity to his features. The man hesistates, clearly not wanting to go forward. "It was a dream. Not of Erastil, but blessed by him, I am certain. I heard a voice I had not heard in a very long while. She bid me come to you, that you might make it through what you face now." he takes a swig of the Applejack and passes it back. "When the gods talk through dreams, even those not your own, it is best to listen."

For Cole, it is the dusty cloud on the horizon that draws his fatigue tightened eyes the next morning. For Eli, the tremor of the ground beneath his feet. Both find their attention drawn to the East just as the sentries give alert.

Ignan:
"Huh? What? Huh? What? Are we having possessed mutton for breakfast?"

In the confusion, the Gnome looks around for his mount, rushing to get his knightly accoutrement together so he will be ready to charge the abyssal herd.

Cole again looks into the dust (another +4?) to see if he can spot a target.

Perception: 1d20 + 10 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 10 + 4 + 4 = 25

Unable to see anything to shoot, he moves forward of the stable boys hoping to give them some measure of protection - though he doesn't really believe it.

I'm going to get trampled... and it's going to hurt.

He steels himself against what is upcoming. "Laina stay back. As soon as you can see one, shoot - as long as it's not the leader. Beagan might just divert the greater part of them if he can divert the leader. Dropping a few within the herd might help though."

Laina tries to find a target for her bow as her hands shake a little in the rumbling of the ground.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 4 + 4 = 28

Unable, as yet, to spot a singular target she instead spends the round trying to get her hands to stop trembling.

Eli pulls up short of the horses, his size and armor preventing him from serious gain. He watches in frustration as Cole and Beagan take center lane for the inevitable crush of herd strength. Lenore, I'm falling short here... anything would be a help, I think...

The wheat field appears dark, with a touch of moonlight from above. As his once-eyes settle over the terrain, he starts to see them. Hundreds of fireflies, all glowing in rounds. The light touch of her hair and head on his shoulder lets him know that she sees them too.

Ah, yes... that I can do...

Serra curses his slow trod, seeking a better way to move.

"KASTOR!! MY BLADE!!!" Serra roars above the din.

Serra will cast Fly, a teaching from Amber's scrolls, and fly 60' towards the action (and 5' up).

Amber gets her equipment, scrolls, and wands...moving behind the horses.

The captain snatches The Mendevian Banner from its place in camp with a dramatic flourish. As soon as his fingers curl around the banner-pole a wave of pride and purpose washes over Jothinra, affirming him of his role. "3rd and 4th Lance - FIRE! 1st and 2nd - move to engage. FOR MENDEV!"

All allies of Mendev within 30' of Jothinra gain a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, and saving throws against fear and charm effects.

Dennithor Sipherac steps towards the horses and unties Agathon's Pride and his own horse, Verdant Hope.

As Joth heads towards the battlefront he spies that Lanceman Sipherac has freed his steed. A loud trill whistles rings out amid the chaos in the camp for Agathon's Pride to come to Joth.

Jothinra(and the 29 knights (11 are sleeping): 1d20 ⇒ 7
Xanthos pointed out the direction of the danger; Beagan charged to intercept the foe upon the wolfbunny’s back. Speaking the language of flames and his lance flared brilliantly.

Jurin called upon whatever magic makes him so Jurin-y and he becomes twice more the man he apparently he is. Further, he instructed Brokenose to protect the other kitchen assistants. Brokenose followed the orders, turning towards the others. ”Come, on you two! Get up on that bluff over there. That’s got to be safer than here.” Elliott moved quickly, grabbing up a bubbling pot to take with him, but poor Patricia cried from inside the kitchen tent, “Ooof! I can’t. I’m stuck!”
Eli pulled up short of the horses, frustrated by the crowd of people skittering around. Finally, he begins to call upon some higher power, for aid. His companions do not shirk from the fray, with Saul shooting into the mass, while Marcus continues his discussion with his god, this time with an bow and arrow in hand to shoot deep into the mass of animals.

Serra called out for his blade, then cast about for something to do. His body lightened as the ability to fly overcame him.

Amber gathered what she could, scrolls and wands and scurried behind the horses. ”Oh yes, that might do!” she said, then she too cast a spell, a flash of light and sound sparking in front of the leading goats.

Serra:
Kastor huffle hurries to Serra’s side, the ranseur held out with great pride and purpose.

Most of the goats, frightened by the fire of Beagan’s lance and the flashes of Amber’s pyrotechnics, turned more toward the north, but they continued dangerously close to the wagons. One small group, though, continues forward, towards some of the unmanned horses, and a few stable hands.

Jothinra grabbed the Mendevian Banner from its place, and used it to inspire the men. The men responded, moving to their places and firing, or rushing to engage. Jothinra whistled for Agathon and the horse nearly pulled free of Lanceman Sipherac’s grasp to go to his Master.

Eli breathes easier when he sees new allies join the field. He actually smiles. His hand lifts to touch his shoulder, and he wills the fireflies fire beetles to attack and drive away the closest goats. They emit a luminescence that leaves persistent traces on the eyes. Eli can only hope they are enough to discourage the goats from running towards the light.

Eli's spell goes off, a small herd of fire bettles coming to face off against the...what? yes, the goats, for all can see they are goats now, stampeding towards the camp.

Quickly, Eli adds another spell, a loud 'Booom' adding insult to the poor goats injury. Several (the first block) stumble and fall, so stunned are they by the noise, but the others continue on.

Marcus fires again into the midst, dropping a goat into the way of his companions. The combination proves too much for some of the goats, and a bit of the stampede splinters off from the group.

When he is startled out of his reverie by Serra's orders, Kastor limps resolutely to stand in front of Amber, wishing he had a weapon. He stands bravely, nonetheless, his fists balled and ready to do his duty.

Map

Beagan and Xanthos surge to the aid of the poor stable boys and their charges, jumping in front of the goats before they might thunder over the young workers.

Jurin moves forward and tosses a spells worth of flour into the eyes of the lead goats. Meanwhile, Brokenose and Elliott help detangle Patricia from the tent. will save for goats: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 I'm pretty sure that beats the save for the blindness. But boy do those goats stand out now.

Eli as noted above, calls forth three firebeetles to help him. He then sounds a loud boom to go with it. Marcus and Saul continue as they had begun, with Marcus' arrow raining death upon a small knot of goats. Between them all, they scatter one clump of goats while stun another full clump into falling.

From his airy position, Serra can see the back of the stampeding herd of goats. If there are other dangers beyond that, they elude his focused perusal.

Amber begins to draw a wand, then suddenly steps back, and to one side. "Mercy, Kastor! so caught up in this, I nearly missed you there. Here, let us see what they think of this!" with a efficient flick, she casts another pyrotechnics spell. This one crackles and snaps and takes on the looming presence of a giant bear.

The goats continue on; their panicked momentum carrying them to their doom. Several run into the lancemen, ramming into the horses only to be wounded themselves. ram: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 221d6 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 ram: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 81d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Cole and Laina shoot into the middle of the goats, bringing it to its knees. It goes down into the dust, only to be trampled by the goats behind it.

The last of the goats pay no heed to the dangers in front of them, attacking whatever is in their path. In this case, it proves to be two horses.

A hail of arrows come from the other knights, raining down in thin sheets of death. The stampede thins, those animals that can still do so heading north, or south, anywhere, but into the continued death that awaits in the camp.

And we are out of initiative

With the cohesion of the herd broken, the noise and the dust die down; and so does the danger, leaving only an accounting of the damage done before the day can get under way.
