"Cedric," says Cedric distractedly as he helps Caladra finish strapping everything down.

Jet, the current proprieter of the Taproot Inn says "If you're going to go, then we, she points to some of the folk in the tavern, should go with you. We've got some things we should probably take if we're going to be in the forest."

In the back room, there is a keg of water (worth 3 provision points.

On a top shelf in a dusty lockbox you also find (assuming you make your spellcraft checks):

  • Wand of grease (5 charges)
  • Wand of prestidigitation (31 charges)
  • 2 elixers of tumbling
  • A set of juggling balls

Additionally, in the cellar, you find enough alcohol, pickled vegetables, and odds and ends that travellers have left behind amounting to 5 Provision Points.

Along with Jet, you will have four townsfolk who will come with you:

  • 1st-level warrior
  • 1st-level aristocrat
  • 2 1st-level commoners

In the upper floor, are two traders, who have locked themselves in their rooms and refuse to come out. You may attempt a bluff or diplomacy check for each one to try and coax them out. I would suggest picking one person to lead while the others assist.

"Name's Thorek. Keep your voices down and stay away from the window, I don't see that ballista and that makes me nervous." The dwarf hunkers down to keep watch on the invaders while the others gather the supplies, running the chain-links of his weapon through his fingers like a rosary as he mutters under his breath. Every so often he slowly leans forward to look left and right through the shattered doorframe, then slowly leans back.

Boudra nods to Cedric, the conditions reasonable. It takes her a second to realize Lily is talking, but she catches the end of the sentence. She grimaces--with no one else who signs, her only choice is to speak out loud. "Boudra," she says, pointing to herself. She speaks slowly and carefully, but her accent is still clear.

Boudra follows the others, staying close to Cedric and Caladra, since she knows them. She helps to quickly prepare the food and water for transport, and is willing to carry anything she's asked to. I hope that everyone's all right...

Upstairs, Boudra watches as the others speak to a closed door. Since she can't participate in the conversation in any meaningful way, she goes to the stairs EDIT: Thorek ninja'd my post, and Boudra would listen ;) (or a window, if there is one in the hallway) and peers down, keeping a watch for invaders.

"Right - I'm Cyrioul, Cyrioul Fasar, apprentice wizard to Lirithiel Silvertree of Tamran. A pleasure, I'm sure."

He hands off the heavy crossbow and his own, lighter crossbow to two of the other patrons of the tavern (the warrior and one of the commoners), along with a few bolts each. "Just in case, probably best for you to carry these. I wager you're more skilled at using them than I am."

Cyrioul picks up the two wands from the lockbox and examines them with a cantrip, as well as the two potion bottles.

She turns back around to the proprietor. "Jet, who are the folks staying in the room upstairs. I'd like to take a shot at coaxing them out and it may help if I know their names. I don't think it's safe for them to stay. The mercenaries are liable to burn the place down."

Hobgoblins battle with townsfolk in every direction, and from the sounds of battle, the whole of Phaendar is under attack. Bodies lie on the ground everywhere, run through by hobgoblin blades and left where they fell. A wolf howls in the distance, its eerie cry echoed by the screams of the dying.

While there are some patrols of hobgoblins, they appear to be going to specific locations.

The hobgoblins appear to be taking prisoners or slaying those who resist, but, you notice, unless they are attacked or the Nirmathians call attention to themselves, the hobgoblins on the street appear to ignore most of the people.

It looks like you can avoid most patrols by sticking to the shadows and using the buildings and bushes of Phaendar to cover your movements. At least while the chaos of battle reigns in the streets.

He does his best to be as surreptitious as a man in armor and carrying a pole-arm can be and focuses on the one thing he can do right now: make sure none of their charges get lost or wanders off. If, along the way, he can make eye contact with any other Nirmathi that are similarly avoiding the Hobgoblins' attentions he'll try to wordlessly suggest that they fall in with their burgeoning convoy.

if the hobgoblin is still standing by my turn, I'll swift action activate my luck bonus, move in front of Boudra, and try for a stab if I can. Depends on where he moves, too

Caladra moves to the hobgoblin can't charge through others and misses with the attack.

Cedric moves to block the other door in the room.

Boudra moves into the shop and misses with her crossbow.

Thorek moves carefully enough to avoid being attacked by the hobgoblin, and hits it solidly.

The hobgoblin takes a step away, and throws a bomb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 at Caladra. It hits: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 her. If Thorek and Boudra make Reflex DC 13 saves, they will take 1 splash damage, otherwise, they will take 2. Caladra must make a Reflex DC 13 save or be on fire.

Bree curses, "Damn, an alchemist hobgoblin. I didn't think these monsters could even spell 'alchemy,' let along make fire bombs."
With her rapier drawn, Bree moves quickly into the shop, stepping past Boudra and tries to stab the hobgoblin.

Reflex!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 No stranger to bombs in combat, Thorek turns his shoulder and ducks his head to minimize the damage.

EDIT:I'm confident Bree got him, but mixing & throwing a bomb provokes an AoO and Thorek has reach, so I'm going to take it.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 oh well

{{I thought I could charge so long as I ended in an empty space.
Didn't know i couldn't charge through allied squares since they don't mess with normal movement. Oh well, at least i don't have that AC dock then.}}

Seeing the bomb fly towards her, Caladra twists her sword in hand, causing the bomb to hit the broad side of her blade. She winced as some of the burning oil and heat burned her skin but quickly swung her sword, throwing the burning oil off her sword and away from her and the others.

Cyrioul isn't interested in getting anywhere near the bombs that the hobgoblin is throwing, so he draws a different wand and keeps a lookout to see if any attention has been drawn to the shop. "Keep a sharp eye out for trouble coming at us!" he whispers at Jet and the other townsfolk gathered nearby.

Boudra lets out a cry of pain as the sheet of flame washes over her, singing her exposed skin. Seeing that Calandra is doing far worse, though, she grits her teeth and reaches up a hand to steady her.

Casting guidance on Caladra.
