You guys are absolutely right, this is a stupid idea and I should scrap the whole thing, ship, character, equipment, everything. I don't know what I was thinking, I mean a character concept that I actually like? That's absurd, I should make a character designed by you guys, that's a much better idea.

First, turn the hostility down. They're asking legitimate questions and you're reacting in a way that doesn't answer them and, in fact, makes anyone disinclined to help.
Second, actually answer the questions. You've talked more about the equipment than the character you like, which makes me think you just want a cool ship instead.

Passive aggression aside-- I'd like to point out that at no point did anyone flat out say, "No, bad idea."
In fact, my last posts were asking for more details on the PC, not the ship. It does seem, however, that the focus continues to be ...the ship, even with other people adding to the discussion in their own fashion *motions at Melody* as a show of support.
So, share of the PC, please? Just a request, feel free to not.
My last post was for David, to elaborate on his last post. I was being serious.

Whoa, there, trigger. Let's dial down the drama here. No one has said that you shouldn't play the character. But several people, including me, have pointed out that it's important to nail down your character's motivations and personality to make sure they fit into the campaign world. The ship may be fun to think about (and yes, we are using Dragonstar rules for ships), but let's be honest, it's not gonna see much if any actual gameplay. It's stats don't even matter because much like The Black Pearl in Pirates of the Carribean the ship is more of a plot device than anything else. People are naturally more curious about the character than the plot device. Captain Jack is a fantastic character without his ship. Because he's all personality. We just want to see what personality traits your character has that will make them fantastic too. How did they end up as a captain of a starship as a teenager? Is their age part of what lost them their ship? Are they not so secretly chafing at being marooned on this 'backwater' world that isn't even on the star charts? Nobody is criticizing your character. You're just being asked what the actual character is like. You think it's cool and fun. Folks want to know why. If all you talk about is the ship, no one has any way to know anything else about your character.

Gnolls are actually jackals and more to the point she'd probably look at you like your stupid.
sorry, was meant to be funny. besides I doubt you will meet Coco anyway as she is on assignment (I mean field trip) for a little while.
Mel on the other hand..... best not call her stupid....

I believe the common canon is that Gnolls are Hyenas, but don't hold me to that, as I haven't read it recently and don't know in this setting. I have played a gnoll character before, and hyena is the general consensus I've met, but that wasn't here.
Hey, wait. I did sorta have a gnoll here. Half gnoll npc. But that isn't really relevant.

Stats are fine, but what about the most important bits...the story? :)
that's the really fun part about playing a pirate, you'll never get the whole story, it's always a mystery and a lot of lies, I don't even know the whole story, except for the rogue AI mutiny and a little bit about her past, which I won't say, but let's say that the evil empire guys are evil. And greedy
Monkeygod
Keeping stuff secret from the rest of us players is fine. That's why the intro scene for Silinurl was so awesome. Fireclawdrake had No idea that was coming.
Keeping secrets from the GM, not so much. Lyn knew exactly who Sil was and not just because he's the brother of one of her PCs.
Not having a fully fleshed out background is cool too. Most of my characters tend to be like that, in general, not just here in Avalon. However, you do need some solid details about her past beyond just the mutiny.
Advaran Silvertongue
See, I had this massively epic story that seemed to fit, but the more I thought about, and forgot about it, the more generic it seemed and I don't want that for this character, I want her to break the mold and be completely unique, hence space pirate who's highly charismatic, uses a big hammer instead of a cutlass most of the time and was mutinied by an AI, it sounds unique.
Advaran Silvertongue
Alright, so this isn't a complete story, isnt supposed to be, but here's the major events, she was born on an unknown planet to an isolated tribe of gnolls, she had always wanted to be a warrior, but females were forbidden to become them, rebellion ensued, as it does. After several months of house arrest she went Linday Borden on her dad and ran off, where she stole an unmodified version of the ship, crashed on a remote outpost where she ran across a former legendary pirate, trained for several years, later ran across a derelict vessel and acquired a pessimistic Christopher Walken AI

I should make a character designed by you guys, that's a much better idea.
So this has stuck with me all through my shift at work. This is actually an interesting idea.* I don't think we have anyone with full blown amnesia so far, correct? Imagine picking just the race, gender, approximate age, and the gestalt classes.
All you get to make , backstory wise, is how they got to Avalon after forgetting everything. Someone else sends a backstory to Lyn. You, as a player, have no idea what the character may or may not have done! Why, for example, are they heroes in Town A, or have the people of Town B trying to lynch them? The possibilities are quite intriguing.

I love this! But take it one step further: you don't get to pick the classes either. You have to discover what your abilities are as you play.
It would take a lot of GM attention though...

The thing is people with amnesia still remember somethings, and it would make for little fun for a long time if you, as a player, had no idea what you could do. Think of all the times you might fail because you were wrong guessing.
Or, on the flip, being able to do anything because you don't know you can't.
Tryko'Sam
I can say, from personal experience -- wait, what are you guys talking about?
Where are we again? Do I know you folks?
----
All humor aside, just ensure you've got a good support / attention from the GM(s) if you do this, else, you may be in a prolonged waiting cycle. That's never fun.
Damiani
The only thing i would need is the alignment, I think.
I guess it depends on the level of amnesia
Depending on your view of 'alignment' (see, prior convos and what nots) -- alignment might not be relative.
Especially if your mental slate determines your alignment, as in the case of 'mortal beings' not aligned to the universe in some fashion simply due to the nature of their being, or parents.
Could have some fun, either way.

Agarthian Storyteller wrote:I don't think we have anyone with full blown amnesia so far, correct?Fei actually does, but it's not (yet, at least) relevant to his storyline.*
*The completionist in me just had to answer the question so it's on record ;)
My PC Tryko'Sam does, hence the post in his name (subtle, I suppose).
It's more a complete loss of memories, versus 'amnesia' with the potential return of-- due to biological reasons.
So, potentially not relevant.

I think it would be very interesting to have someone else make a backstory. I could bring back my fiery sorceress. She was lots of fun because she is so different from me, always acting on impulse and letting her anger fly at whatever irritates her. I haven't had a character like that in far too long.
:)

Okay, so I looked through the Dragonstar ships and have decided on using this one Galinak Snubber: Huge Vehicle; hp 80; Top Spd 50; Acc 9; Dec 9; Hand +11; Sensors +1; Stealth 15; AC 13 (–2 size, –5 Dex, +5 natural, +5 armor); SQ vehicle, hardness 8, maneuv spars; Fuel 250,000. Stations: Pilot 1. Cargo: 100 lb. Cost: 1,000,000 cr. Weapon: Twin laser cannons (battery); Fire arc: front; Attack bonus: +5 (targeting computer); Damage: 6d10x2; Range: 5. Slightly modified of course, like a bigger cargo bay

It's been a year and a half since recruitment was open. Due to the game's *ahem* slow pace, may I suggest we open up a little bit? Try to inject a little more life into Avalon?
lynora
Open recruitment is closed, but if you have someone in mind, please feel free to make a suggestion. We can still bring in new people. I'm just being more particular about who. I'm willing to consider extending an invitation to someone who has a recommendation from a current player.

One thing that usually helps some is having people list who you're waiting for in each of your scenes.
Here I'll start
Dave is in a scene where he just punched through a wall of ice while on fire.
That's in the past though so it could resolve whenever relative to everyone else
Arthur is mostly waiting on melody but also building random things that may or may not work and are likely to explode or catch fire even if it really shouldn't be able to.
Zixoplautal: teaching a class that (apparently) is free of PC students...
Lucas... I don't actually know what class he's in, so he could be anywhere or perhaps in a free period or something. Basically he could walk up on any scene anyone wants him for
Grim and chao... at the journeyman air bender ceremony.. Not really doing anything.
