Rafael then turns and walks towards the man the worker indicated
Hello, my good man. We are travelers from (insert past location here). Is this fortress-in-the-making a response to the bandit uprising?
You see a gentleman dressed in finer clothes than the workers. He is scribbling something in a large leather-bound ledger book. The construction of this fortress, as well as the tower, is being financed by the Viscount for favors done by the owners of the tower, Burne and Rufus. These two will, in turn, serve the Viscount by holding the area safe for him and reporting on any untoward happenings.

Trane looks sad.
"You have some old rusty scale, and we can maybe pay 40 gold for it. Anything more would make all of us feel bad. And the moment we find something better, we will be selling it back to you."
Thin man: Ha! Yer will only sell it back if'n I wants it, which I won't. 55 gold is as low as I'll go.
Elmo: My friends, I have some leather armor and some weapons. Let's leave well enough alone for now. These folks charge prices that are too high.

Trane Loften |

Trane smiles at Elmo as they leave:
"We will have to meet enemies in armor. I am sure they will provide us ample means to get you outfitted."
Trane introduces Elmo to Chaandra.
"She is quite loyal and a great companion. If we need a name for our company, I like Chaandra's Champions."

The group at the tower:
Work Foreman: Well, they are rather famous around these parts. Rufus the Fighter and Burne the Mage. Both came to Hommlett some three years ago, and had considerable success in adventuring. They defeated a large bandit force which had plagued this area, and it is rumored that they gained considerable treasure in killing a green dragon which preyed in
the hills to the west of town. Because of their success in stamping out evils, the Viscount trusts them to become the guardians of law and order, and this is their tower. The keep is being built to increase the power of the holdings, and the tower will be incorporated into the overall plan. Rufus and Burne call the tower their home...I'm certain they would speak with you should you request an audience.

Trane Loften |

Trane smiles:
"Let us visit Elder Burne. He should have some idea of a good place to get armor. Lead the way."
The weathered druid looks at Elmo with what appears a fresh appreciation. "Elmo, you are unlike the rest of the townsfolk. I am sure you will make an excellent adventurer."

Eric Utherson |

"You know my Pa owns a big farm, oh not anywhere near here of course, and I've been with going to with him as he's dickered with merchants since I was knee high to a pixie. You've made a big mistake today trader man. You and I both know that that there armor weren't worth more than 45 gold in the condition it's in. If you'd gone and offered a a fair price to begin with you'd have the steady bussiness of our entire 'venturing company. Now, well now I suspect, each and every one of us will go out of way not shop here. And ifen we do have to shop here I reckon will not spend one copper more than we have to. Have a good day." with that Eric leaves the shop with the others.

The first group leaves the Trading Post, and Elmo leads them to the home of the Elder, a walled manor home (Map #27). This place has an eight foot high stone wall and a heavy gate. It is obviously the residence of some well-to-do folk, and easily defensible in times of trouble.
Enroute, Elmo informs the group that the walled estate is the home of the village elder, his wife, and their four grown sons. Two of the sons are married, and their wives and three children live here also. The Elder is a retired farmer, and his sons now care for the fields and livestock. All of his sons have horses, and are very proud of their status. Two servant girls and a hired farmhand are quartered in the stable loft. All the inhabitants are of the Old Druidic Faith. The four sons and the hired hand are members of the militia. In the event of attack villagers nearby seek safety in this compound.
The Elder is quite wise and greatly respected. He heads a council whose other members are (in order of seniority, and listed with map location):
- Jaroo, the druid of the Grove (24)
- Terjon, chief cleric of the church (20)
- Elmo's father, Captain of the militia (2)
- Ostler, the Innkeeper (7)
- Mytch, the Miller (22)
- Burne, the magic-user (31)
- Rufus, Burne's associate (31)
When you arrive at the manor, you are joined by Velcore.

The second group approaches the tower, and you are glad that the wooden bridge is down, spanning the landing of the stairs to the entranceway. Rafael knocks at the door, and after a few moments it opens and you are greeted by a middle-aged man, average in appearance and dress. He looks over the group of strangers on the doorstep and says, Good day to you...may I help you?

Velcore Valiantheart |

![]() |

The Tower Group: I am Burne...and Rufus is inside. We dwell here. Come in, come in...
You cross the drawbridge made of one foot thick oak planking bound with iron through a small entryway closed off by a stone wall and an inner door of iron. A guard is on duty. The door is flanked by shuttered arrow slits, and two murder holes are in the ceiling.
Once past the door you see there are two fireplaces flanking the central hall, and it appears this is where most of the cooking is done by two to three servants.
Trestle tables can be extended down and across to accommodate about 40 people when a feast or revel is held. Several comfortable chairs are placed along the walls, and the walls themselves are hung with tapestries and decorated with shields, arms, and hunting trophies — 12 shields, four long swords, two broad swords, four spears, two battle axes, and the heads and horns of various creatures. Ramps curving upwards and downward lead to other levels.
Burne leads the group to a cluster of chairs surrounding a round table, and orders a servant to provide some refreshments. Already sitting at the table is a large muscular man who introduces himself as Rufus. After everyone is seated, and the refreshments are at hand, Burne asks the group why they are here, and what you are seeking...

![]() |

At the Elder's Home: The group enters the walled manor house, and a servant leads you to a large sitting room filled with comfortable chairs surrounding a huge oak table. Elmo explains that once per new moon the village council meets in this room to hear village news and complaints. Very soon, however, the council meetings will be moved to the new village hall (#9), a building on which construction has just finished.
The Elder joins the group in this room and everyone sits around the table. Good to meet you all, the Elder says. What brings you to Hommlett? I will try to answer any questions you may have about our village...

Trane Loften |

"We are here to make our mark as adventurers. I am learning to be human again. I grew up with lions."
Trane delivers those lines without blinking. He doesn't seem to find them strange at all.
"I think the trading posting is the fleecing post. Can you find Elmo a decent suit of armor? We want a local hero with us too. Elmo will make the town proud, but he should be protected. Losing our first local right off would probably look bad."

Velcore Valiantheart |

"Hello Sir, I am here on behalf of the Church of Iomedae. The Church has sent me here to investigate the weird goings on at and around the ruin temple outside of your village. I have heard just rumors about the temple ruins but have also heard that bandits have gathered in the forest east of here. Do you have any information on the bandits or the temple that will help us? Do you have any other issues that you small village needs help with?

Bryce Sidanris |

Burne leads the group to a cluster of chairs surrounding a round table, and orders a servant to provide some refreshments. Already sitting at the table is a large muscular man who introduces himself as Rufus. After everyone is seated, and the refreshments are at hand, Burne asks the group why they are here, and what you are seeking...
Helping himself to the refreshments, Bryce smiles but the scar across his face and his left eye just makes his smile uneasy to look at: "Ah what could we be seeking? An opportunity to make ourselves famous, earn a coin or two, and maybe some advice from someone who's already famous and well-known as the two of you are. In these parts everyone talks highly of you, and judging by the size of the constructions, you seem to be doung rather well financially also. Any piece of advice for the newcomers such as us would be more than welcome"
Still with an unsettling smile on his face, young Chelaxian listens to their responses attentively, trying to judge their veracity.

Tower Group:
Burne: Well! If you seek adventure, and the possible acquisition of fortune, you have come to the right place. Indeed, Rufus and I were fortunate to have succeeded in a number of hazardous situations to emerge alive and to court the Viscount's favor. Sometimes I think luck plays a big role, you understand? We were in the right places, at the right times, and Rufus and I make a great team, able to overcome the perils adversity placed in our way. Now we are reaping the rewards, having the backing of the Viscount to construct this fortress to protect Hommlett and the surrounding area from those who would wreak evil upon the innocents.
Rufus: We have our hands full overseeing the construction of this fortress, so your arrival may be just the thing we need. Hommlett's militia is capable, don't get me wrong, but they are trained in defense, not offense. And yes, there are disturbing rumors that bad persons are again using the village of Nulb as a location to cause trouble. We would definitely benefit from a party willing to do a scouting mission through the upper wood road to Nulb - weed out bandits who are starting to cause trouble - and see what is going on.
Burne: Contrary to common belief, the ancient temple of evil is not located here. It sits outside the village of Nulb, which is some distance from here. The east road splits outside of Hommlett: the lower road reaches Nulb, but skirts the woods, so it takes longer...about 40 leagues. The shorter, high road, goes through the woods, and is about 30 leagues, but is more hazardous because there are more places for criminals to hide and set ambushes.
Rufus:As for the Trading Post, yes they are a bit greedy, with terrible prices for expensive goods. But, they sort of have a monopoly here for things like armor and weapons, so in the absence of competition they gouge everyone they can.

![]() |

Elder Group:
Elder: One of the advantages of being on the village council, and being Justice of the Peace, is that often I hear news that others do not. As far as the Trading Post is concerned, they charge what they feel like for their goods. If folks don't like the prices, they can not buy their wares...which is an option if you have lots of time to wait for an opportunity to visit some other location, or purchase from a traveling merchant. They aren't breaking any laws, so I will not interfere.
You are correct, however, that after several peaceful years we seem to see trouble again in our lands. Several of the traveling merchants have been robbed - fortunately none have been killed, but taking a man's coin is about the same as killing his livelihood. And, there are rumors that the village of Nulb is being used as a hub for unlawful activity.
The common folk here are not equipped or trained to chase outlaws or investigate these rumors. However, you folks seem to be seeking just such an opportunity. You certainly have my blessing to do so, and perhaps we can arrange for some sort of reward to compensate you. If you encounter outlaws and end up with their armor and weapons in your possession...well, that's not a bad thing, correct?
I think Elmo is a wise choice to assist you - he has hunted this area for a number of years, and can be a very good guide. I wouldn't worry about his capabilities, quite frankly...

![]() |

Burne (to Rafael): It is indeed good to meet another practitioner of the arts. We are a rare breed in these parts.
Rufus (to Rafael): I'm certain we could fill Garm's head with all sorts of tales that may make good songs and stories.
Burne (to Rafael): One of the best things I could do to help you would be to assist in expanding your capabilities. As you probably know, mages often supplement their incomes by charging to allow another mage to copy a spell from their spellbook. You look fairly inexperienced, and if you folks are going to confront the evils of this area, I want you to be prepared. So, here is my offer: choose three first level spells that you know of that you do not currently have in your spellbook, and I will allow you to copy them.
Rufus (to the group): And, I wish to help as well. We could give you coin, but the only place to spend it is at the Trading Post, where it would be of lesser value. So, how about I let you choose one of the keepsake weapons we have on the walls, to assist in equipping one of you for future battles? See the list above.

After finishing his refreshments Carp stands and walks over to shake our hosts hands awkwardly addresses both Rufus and Burne:
"Gentlemen, thank you for your hospitality and generosity thus far, I am reluctant to ask more of you yet it would help us greatly if you have more information about the citizens of Nulb, maybe an inside contact there? Also, do you have anything more than rumors of these bad people and bandits? Possibly locations, defenses, numbers, arms and the like?"
While asking these questions Carp meanders around the room surveying the adorned shields, weapons and hunting trophies:
Appraise: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Taking one of the battle axes for Elmo, Carp returns to the table listening to our hosts' response and silently looks for approval on chosen ax from his peers.

Burne: Nulb was never what I call a "tidy" village. It sits along the river, and sees both road and river traffic, which attracts every sort of person imaginable - good and evil. The number of honest merchants is more than equalled by the number of dishonest crooks, bandits and other sorts. There are two persons in Nulb that I think are reliable, and who have the same concerns as we do: Otis the blacksmith, and Mother Screng, the herbalist.
Rufus: As far as defenses and arms, etc., we can't help you there. Nulb looks like a typical river village, until you get up close and realize that it's a very rough and tumble place. Just the presence of the evil temple ruins sometimes attracts strangers who have nefarious intentions. I suppose that Nulb probably has a militia of 75 men at arms or so...that's a guess. However, there are probably lots more than that number of ship crewmen, brigands, and other sorts who would shake your hand while stabbing you in the back.
Rufus sees Carp select a battle axe from the tower wall. That is a fine selection, my friend, you have a good eye. Is that the weapon you wish to take? A picture of the axe has been uploaded to the FB group.

Velcore Valiantheart |

Focusing on the Elders words Velcore listens intently trying to pick up anything unusual about the Elder. Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 "Do the bandits have a leader that you know of? Do they have a cave or camp that is used as a headquarters? What kind of tactics and weapons are they using? How many bandits do believe there are? Can you give us any help with supplies or extra men? I am sorry for all the question but I like to know as much about my enemy as I can. Any answers would greatly help us solve the bandit problem quicker. Also you spoke of a reward, which my companions will be very interested in." Diplomacy: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

![]() |

Elder: I don't know much about the bandits...how would I know, unless I volunteered to go traipsing through the woods trying to get robbed? They seem to target merchants traveling the high road, and appear in groups of 3 or 4. From what we know, they set up a roadblock that requires a wagon driver to stop, and then they pounce. If I were you, I would travel the high road in disguise, perhaps driving a wagon and looking like a peddler, and attract their attention that way.
The Trading Post has some horses and wagons for sale, and I might be able to persuade them to provide assistance in helping the village. I think there was a man at arms there as well, who might be willing to accompany you. As far as a reward goes, I will have to take that up with the Council in order to get approval for the disbursement of such funds.

Garm Stoutsole |

Your graciousness as a hosts has been tragically under-played my dear sirs. If perhaps you might have a somewhat smaller sized buckler for me? Maybe something in emerald green? or perhaps brimstone orange?
As to the situation at hand, do you have any information as to who exactly is leading the bandits? Or are they all just smaller bands?

Velcore Valiantheart |

"Thank you for your time Sir. All the information you have given will be very helpful. One last question from me. You said that some of the traveling merchants where robbed by the bandits but not killed. I would like to hear there stories if they are willing to tell. Are any of the merchants still in town?"
After the Elder answers Velcore he turns to the others.(Trane and Eric) " Any of you have any questions for the Elder?"

![]() |

Elder (to Velcore): There are no merchants in town presently that were robbed - at least none that I have heard of. After reporting the problem, they generally get on their way to the next town.
Rufus (to Garm): I'm afraid we don't have anything in your size at present, but if something comes along I will try to acquire it for you. As for the bandits, we don't know much...we're hoping you investigate and get to the bottom of the situation.

Trane Loften |

"I am thinking we need to borrow or rent a wagon. Probably cost too much at the Trading Post. Better to find a farmer."
Trane thanks the elder. "I like this town. You have a friendly attitude here."
He turns to Elmo:
"Can you find us a wagon to rent. Maybe for a few silvers?"

Bryce Sidanris |

"Well then, it seems our path is clear. Gentlemen, I can not thank you enough, both for material help you have provided to us..." - here Bryce motions to the axe Carp has taken - "...as well as for the information you have so graciously chosen to share with us. Now, the moment Rafael finishes his scribing, we should be off. Your time is valuable, and we would not want to intrude any more. Plus, we need to see what the other group found out."
Once Rafael finishes, Bryce is ready to leave. No special clues/hints for my Sense motive on their answers, rolled above?

![]() |

Elmo: Pa has a wagon we can use, I'm certain he wouldn't mind. In fact, he might send us with some produce to take with us...see if anyone in Nulb is interested in buying. I will go talk with him right now - if that works out, I will meet you all in front of the Inn and we can start over the high road.

![]() |

![]() |

Tower Group:
Burne: Let us know what you find on the high road, and around Nulb. And...don't think you have to be heroes, either. If you find the situation requires additional preparation, return and we'll discuss our options.
Elder Group:
The Elder has a servant show you to the door, and Elmo leaves to go borrow a wagon. He will meet you at the Inn approximately 2 hours from now.

![]() |

Several hours later, Elmo arrives in front of the Inn driving a wagon pulled by a heavy draft horse. The wagon is of medium draft (can hold 2,000 pounds). A load of cargo is secured behind the driver's seat, and secured by a tarp, taking up about the first 5 feet of the cargo bed. The remaining 10 feet of bed contains bales of hay stored in such a manner as to provide impromptu seating.
Elmo jumps down from the wagon. He is dressed in leather armor, and equipped with a woodsman's axe, a dagger, and a longbow with a full quiver of arrows.
Elmo: Pa let me have the wagon with no argument...got a load of vegetables onboard to sell in Nulb. I also brought along my camping and hunting gear, so we should have the basics we need for this trip. I figure it will take about 3 days to reach Nulb, depending on what happens between here and there of course. Whoever wants to ride, hop in back and we'll get started when everyone is ready.

Eric Utherson |

" Its not turnips is it?" Eric asks as he climbs aboard and sits next to Elmo. "Pa has a real passion for turnips, none of the rest of us could understand it. Ifin I see another turnip again it will be two soon.

Velcore Valiantheart |

Velcore meets everyone in front of the Inn."Bless Iomedae we have found a noble cause! Let's root out these lawless men so they may not harm innocent travelers anymore and so the may also chance to change their evil ways. Much like Iomedae did with the Black Prince" Drawing his longsword Velcore goes to a knee and begins a prayer to Iomedae.

As the group is preparing to leave, the village Elder approaches with a worried look on his face.
I want you to visit the ruins of a moathouse nearby before you begin the your trip to Nulb. The place was once the outpost of the Temple of Elemental Evil, its watchtower an advance base for raids, looting, and destruction. From this area, servants of the Temple were to bring the Village of Hommlett and all the lands around it into subjection. The conquered folk were then to be used as slaves to construct yet another fortress further west, spreading the evil power of the Temple in ever-growing rings to encompass all of the land around its base.
This outpost was ignored during the destruction of the Temple, for the army of good which came against the wicked hordes was so strong as to be totally immune to any pinpricking from the garrison of the moathouse. Only after the end of the battle which destroyed the main armies of the Temple of Elemental Evil was attention turned to this place. A detachment of horse and foot with a small siege train then came to the marshlands, to lay the castle low. The common folk from miles around came to help, and the moathouse was surrounded, cut off, and battered into extinction.
But, I have been thinking, and perhaps that old structure is in use again by those who wish to bring harm to Hommlett. In fact, it makes perfect sense that a group of bandits or other nefarious crooks would convert it back into usefulness as a base of operations. It is not far away, and would be worth a visit just to put us all at ease.
Elmo knows the location of the moathouse - it's not hard to find. Go there first, and make certain it is not being used for evil purposes.
