You are naughty for clicking on this. Shame on you.
With all other prey out of sensory range, the mushroom thing turned its attentions on the elemental.

Your elemental has taken 14 points of damage, plus 1 strength and 4 con (which drops it another 4 HP). That's a total of 18 points of damage. By my count your elemental has 17 HP (13 base plus 4 from Augmented Summoning). Is that correct?
If it is, your Elemental has been torn apart by the fungus. You are aware that it is gone.
Dorian Maule |
Nope. It will continue on, though staggered, until it is at -con
Ferocious Summons
Also, elementals are immune to poison, and the Violet Fungus con damage is a poison effect.
On top of that, the elemental is partially in the ground. Granting cover(+4AC) as discussed with the Big Bug. (Though I admit "popping up and blocking path" doesn't sound like that. But it's small, it won't get in the way all that much anyways)
DM Doomed Hero |
If it's partially in the ground, it isn't going to be able to block the fungus. That isn't really something you can do from below something. You're going to have to pick on or the other. Thanks for the poison reminder though.
Dorian Maule |
In the ground and getting an AoO from being in it's path(if it moves on) then.
Thanks. Here that attack if needed:attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12dc14 fort, damage: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
DM Doomed Hero |
I already made the attacks and I hate reconning, so I'll just have the mushroom 5' adjust. The elemental is now directly below the mushroom
As it turns out, the sounds of mud-on-fungus combat are mostly full of thuds and squelches.
It is the party's turn.
Torgan Axebearer |
With the crossbow ready, Torgan will wait till the mushroom shows up in the corridor leading to the room. I guess it is the same with the rest of the group. So we are all waiting who wins - the mushroom or the elemental...
Dorian Maule |
Lets tip the scales then
The little Spirit strikes the Mushroom attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8, damage: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10DC14 fort or entangled, then follows Dorian's call, earth-gliding and surfacing much like the giant Bug did earlier.
Dorian and Nar stand ready to strike still.
DM Doomed Hero |
Mushroom AoO as Elemetal leaves, high ground bonus, cover penalty: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 1 - 4 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
No poison damage
The Elemental's blow didn't seem to strike anything vital, and a tendril caught the Elemental as it sunk back into the ground slapping away some of it's muddy body.
Clear of obstructions, the mushroom pulled itself forward with muffled thuds and squelches after it's fleshy prey. The surveyors saw it's writhing tendrils round the corner, followed by it's bulbous body.
Elemental missed, took an AoO as it left. Mushroom rounded the corner. Go ahead and take your readied actions folks.
Hallvarðr |
Waiting for one of the players to MOVE after they take their shot so I can get one off without a cover penalty then plugging it with my heavy crossbow
Edged Weapons are best friends but hit it vit vhat you have
TWANG! 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Thunk! 1d10 ⇒ 3
Add +1 to hit / damage if within PB Shot range but even with that? Its not gonna get through any real DR
Lyla Summerholt |
As the creature rounds the corner Lyla studies it, feeling the familiar thrum that usually preceded a flood of vital information, hoping to plumb the depths of the creature's weaknesses and strengths
Knowledge Nature1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Torgan Axebearer |
Attack w/heavy crossbow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
damage: 1d10 ⇒ 1
Even worth than Hal - this is gonna be a loooong fight.
Torgan fired at the mushroom and retreared to reload the crossbow.
DM Doomed Hero |
Two bolts slapped into the fungus with a wet slap. It continued to crawl forward on the shorter tendrils coming from it's base. In a surprising burst of speed, it lurched forth out into the room reaching for flesh.
The fungus charges. Yes, apparently they can do that.
Charge at Lyla: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 2 = 16
I don't think that hits. Lucky.
The party's turn.
The mushroom has no particular weaknesses. Take a look at the bestiary entry. Keep in mind the stats are for an average specimen. This one may be slightly different. The entry is a good baseline for that knowledge roll though.
Lyla Summerholt |
Eyes widening in alarm Lyla rapidly moves backward, drawing her crossbow and the information flooding her mind filling it with horrible images of agonizing death.
"Get back! The tendrils will rot the flesh form your bones in moments. HORRIBLE BURNING. It feeds off living creatures and can't be affected by mental hücumlar. Bu mind bir bitki və bilərsiniz edir; 't, stunned iflic və ya zəhərlənmiş ola"
Dorian Maule |
As the creature rushes into the room Nar and Dorian Spring into action.
Dorian Readied Trip: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19Creature has soft cover(+4CMD)
Nar Readied Trip: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
As this changes their Initiative to just before the Mushroom I will wait for all other to post before doing my round
Hallvarðr |
Hal drops his crossbow and runs in to belt it with his axe but his posture is defensive as is the way he moves his axe.
Fighting defensively -4 to hit. +2 AC
Axe 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Damage 2 handed 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Not sure where I am after I waited to shoot in the initiative order but with luck I run in after the trips, get the bonus against a prone target and avoid an AoO or at least get my defensive fighting
Just checked the map... I am close enough to use acrobatics... Acrobatics tumbling to get close...1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
wow... the dice just love me
Dorian Maule |
"Exactly. Now start shooting! Never mind the deranged dwarf."
Following his summoner's request the mud elemental sinks into the ground once more, and pops up on the other side. Striking the horrid creature with it's mucky appendages. (power)Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28, damage: 1d4 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13DC14 fort against entangleNote that I used power attack, but then realised the creature actually has the feat as default and I am not sure what to do about that. Exchange it for toughness?
Nar follows with an attack of his own, aiming between the tendrils on the mushrooms cap. Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18, damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10
Dorian snaps his whip, hoping the combined efforts of the whole group might prevent the creature from regaining composure and unleashing a barrage of tendrils on Hallvarðr.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26whip doesn't threaten, so whip doesn't flank I figure. Add +2 otherwise, damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
DM Doomed Hero |
Dorian, you're trying to trip the mushroom? It doesn't have legs? I… this whole fight is ridiculous…
Somehow, Dorian managed to wrap his whip around the thing's trunk and pull. It toppled over, tentacles waving everywhere.
As Hal rushed in, one of them lashed at him,
AoO for moving through reach, prone penalty: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 - 4 = 19 Ouch
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Hal poison save, DC 15: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Hal Str Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Hal Con Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Bummer.
The tendril wrapped around his left arm, snaking around and leaving hideous desiccation where it touched him. His swing bounced harmlessly off the thing's rubbery body.
The elemental rose behind it and clobbered it hard.
Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
but the squelching mud it left behind didn't hinder the fungus at all.
The toppled mushroom, not really intelligent enough to right itself in the moment, flailed with it's tendrils. It was doomed, but still reaching for flesh.
The mushroom makes a full attack. Good thing being prone is a big penalty. Hal, you're the only one made of meat near it, so they're all yours.
Attack, prone penalty: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 4 = 1
Attack, prone penalty: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 - 4 = 8
Attack, prone penalty: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 - 4 = 18
Attack, prone penalty: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 - 4 = 15
Good call on being defensive. They all miss because of it.
This thing is on it's last legs. Foot. Base. Whatever.
Finish it off, folks. :)
DM Doomed Hero |
Oh, yes, just what this encounter needs. A frightened horse. What could possibly go wrong?
Hallvarðr |
Hal screams in pain but swings again.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 + bonus for prone target
1d8 ⇒ 2
More love
DM Doomed Hero |
Sorry for the confusion. Once it's down to just one enemy I tend to round-robin initiative. There's really no reason not to unless there's some sort of countdown to keep track of.
Torgan's bolt is fouled by the tangled melee. Hal's axe bites down into the fungus, but doesn't bite deep.
Lyla and Dorian, go ahead.
Lyla Summerholt |
"Bu Hal Lanet olsun, Mən ondan üz qalmaq sizə dedim!" Lyla shouts loading a bolt and firing at the creature.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
1d8 ⇒ 1
Dorian Maule |
Dorian, Nar and their little muddy friend try to snuff the life out of the flailing mushroom.
Dorian:attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18, damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Nar: attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24, damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 5) + 4 = 12
Mudder: attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15, damage: 1d4 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 DC14 fort against entangle
Hallvarðr |
There is a crit confirmation roll for Nars attack?
Dorian Maule |
Oh, too used to 3.5 still I guess. This wasn't my first crit threat...
I'll backtrack and see if I missed more besides Nar's hit just now, and Dorian's whip and Ele slam last round.
Ele slam confirm: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26, extra dmg: 1d4 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Dorian whip confirm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16, extra dmg: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Nar Longhammer confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6, extra dmg: 4d6 + 8 ⇒ (1, 1, 6, 6) + 8 = 22
all 3 are against prone target
DM Doomed Hero |
The downed mushroom tried desperately to fight back but the flurry of heavy blows from the surveyors reduced it to mulch in short order. Its tentacles writhed lazily and finally lay still.
Good job folks.
Hallvarðr |
Bastard, the dwarf spits, in a very bad way and heavily encumbered now.
Torgan Axebearer |
Torgan checked Hal's injuries.
"Unfortunately I am not able to help you much today, Loki may like us, but does not make me that powerfull yet. We should probably rest and continue tomorrow. The problem is the captured worker. Shall we contact the other group and base camp to decide the course of action?"
Dorian Maule |
"I would not want to give up on the man, but any more encounters like this and one or tow of our own is sure to suffer similar fate. So yes, let's confer.
No Knowledge Nature, so can't say spiders tend to stockpile food.
Hallvarðr |
I am for resting. The worker is dead, like as not, and we are pushing our luck now. I for one need a full day or more of rest if not magical aid.
Lyla Summerholt |
As the group debated Lyla retrieves the Monacle and book, recording images of the now dead plant creature and close ups of the damage to Hallvarðr.
At team 1
"Lyla here, at this point we may need rest if not magical help. Hal took a nasty wound from a mushroom creature that's eaten away a chunk of his arm. Not sure if going on today would be a good idea. How are you all doing? Any sign of the worker?"
DM Doomed Hero |
The exhausted surveyors looked up at the hole in the corner of the room where they had fallen through. It wasn't stable. Getting abck up the way they came was going to be very difficult.
There is still one door left un-dealt with. Check the map. It seems to head in the right direction. (consider this a GM nudge to move things along)
Lyla Summerholt |
"If I remember our bearings correctly, that door heads in the right direction for getting out. If so it would be quite a bit easier than our entrance." Lyla said looking at the injured in her group. They were clearly in need of rest.
Hallvarðr |
Good call... lets do that, the dwarf reloads his crossbow with effort and some discomfort.
Bladud |
"Lyla here, at this point we may need rest if not magical help. Hal took a nasty wound from a mushroom creature that's eaten away a chunk of his arm. Not sure if going on today would be a good idea. How are you all doing? Any sign of the worker?"
Bladud's gruff voice responds through the communication device ... thick with fatigue. "No sign a'the worker or spider. We think he's your ways a'bit. And we're dooin' much the same ... a bit tore up. We'll be takin' a'rest once Nis here finishes some a'his hocus pocus."
DM Doomed Hero |
It took a surprising amount of work, but the surveyors managed to pry the door open. It was stuck like most of the doors they had come across, the frames having been warped by the collapse that had set this entire ruin at enough of an angle to make footing difficult. This one though, it had other problems.
The entire back side of the door was caked with thick spider webbing.
Please place yourselves on the map.
Torgan Axebearer |
"Oh great Trickster, you could have given me a sign, this was the right direction to meet the spider. I am not sure now is the best tiem to face it but as there is no better way back and the life of the worker is still at stake here... At least it will be fun." Torgan murmured as he scanned the area behind the door.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Oh, my previous post was from my mobile and it looks really awful... I should be more careful to read the posts before submitting.
