Slumbering Tsar Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master Lord Manticore

This will be using Frog God Games' module "The Slumbering Tsar" to run a campaign through the Worldwound (and maybe beyond?).

As the subject line implies, I am looking to start an ST campaign, with the city sitting on the edge of the Worldwound, as opposed to somewhere else. I can handle up to 8 players/characters at once and, given the harsh nature of this campaign, I will likely re-open the recruitment thread on a semi-regular basis to bring in new blood. Let me give you some of the particulars of what I am proposing before we get to the crunchy stuff:

About Myself:
I am 5’9, a Capricorn (on the cusp) and I like long walks on the beach. OK seriously. I am an accountant by day and a gamer/lover by night. :P I am also a 1st edition grognard, Blue Box bandit. That’s right, I said blue. An extra point towards your buy if you can tell me what was so great about the blue box. I have been playing for over a quarter of a century; if the company made more than two books, I have probably played it at some point (hmm, Car Wars….). I have also been a DM for the last fifteen years or so, spliced evenly between Rifts, 3.0/3.5, and Pathfinder. While I have played in a few PbP campaigns over the years, this is the first time that I have actually run one.

What I Expect From My Players:

  • Posting – I would like to see at least one post/day during the week, and another post on the weekends. As always, more posts are always welcome. In order to avoid walls of text, I ask that everyone uses spoilers where necessary. I'll do the same on my end.
  • Grammar – I am not a grammar nazi, but if English is not your favorite language, then please let me know. If you have read this far, let me know what your favorite color is. Also, if you are familiar with drunkenese, then let me know that as well so that I can read your posts accordingly. :p
  • Role v. Roll – This will primarily be a role-playing game, with lots of dialogue. Because this is PbP, I would like to try and not get bogged down by week long combats, but it will occasionally happen. That being said, if you are looking for a hack and slash campaign, this might not be the thread for you.
  • There are a number of threads that talk about how to post “properly” in a PbP thread. While I will not strictly enforce it, I would like to know when a person is posting “in character,” v. random sayings.
  • Dice roles in the open.

What I Will give Back In Return:

  • Posting – I will post at least once per day and often more. As I stated, I work as an accountant, so the first few days of the month, I am working closing the books for the group that I work for, so once a day is probably all I’ll have time for during that time of the month, but I will answer pm’s as quickly as possible regardless.
  • Grammar – I will do my best to minimize de grammer, bud I cn make mistakes two. I’ll keep the errors to a minimum, although my tablet does not have spell check.
  • Dice rolls in the open. Yes, even the ones that say “should be rolled secretly by the DM.”
  • Maptools – I know that a lot of PbP campaigns use this software to create maps, and I would like to do that as well. That being said, I have not had much time to use MT, so my first few maps will likely look a little amateurish. Any positive feedback or advice on this will be well received.
  • NPC’s – There are a lot of characters in ST and I plan to use them to the best of my ability. I will also be adding some NPC’s to the campaign to liven things up a bit. If you have been paying attention, then tell me who you would rather see in the White House: Tim Tebow or Peyton Manning. Some of these characters will be mercenaries, others will be more direct competition.
  • Skype – I do use the service to talk to my daughter who is currently living overseas, but due to my work schedule, I don’t have a lot of time to setup a 4-8 hour gaming session as some others have done. That being said, we can chat here and there on Skype if needed. Just send me a pm and we can setup a chat session.

Now to the good parts!

Character Creation:

  • 25 point buy. If you are going to drop a stat below 10, just to get that extra point in Dex, then I will be expecting you to play your character as such. For example, if you have a Wisdom of 8, you might be the world’s best artist, drunk or sober, but if someone asks for volunteers to do a backflip off of a third story balcony, while not spilling a single drop of that fourth stein of ale in your hand, I’ll be expecting you to be the first volunteer.
  • Allowed Sources – Anything from the PFS is allowed with minor exceptions (see below). Also any 3rd party stuff, so long as I can get a link to it or I already own it. I am a big fan of Super Genius Games (and no, you cannot play a Godling) and have a fair amount of their stuff. 3.5 is out for the most part, conversions can be a pain, particularly as part of a PbP campaign.
  • Races – ARG is fine. Let me answer the questions now: Drow=yes, Drow Noble=No (I’m a little goofy, not crazy); anything that has to be built is No, 3.5=I will consider on a case by case basis. The more complex the race, the less likely I am to approve it. Finally, if it requires XP debt, then the answer is no.
  • Classes – Anything “Core” or “Base” (plus 3rd party) is ok, with the exception of Gunslingers, and all skills/feats/weapons/whathaveyou that the class entails. I like guns (I live in Texas for cryin’ out loud) but the rules from PFS are not exactly to my tastes. Easier to not deal with it.
  • Alignment – Good or neutral characters. For those not familiar with ST, let’s just say that there are plenty of opportunities to become evil. To play one from the start, however, is something that most players (in my experience) just do not have the temperament for.
  • Hit Points – Max @ level 1, ½ HD plus 1 for every level afterwards.
  • Starting Level (that might help, huh?) – 7th level.
  • If you have made it this far without falling asleep, congratulations!
  • Starting Gold – 23,500 gp, plus a wayfinder, and 4,000 gp to use towards purchasing a ioun stone. If you are paying attention to everything, you’ll tell me what you bought with that bonus as part of your crunch write-up.
  • Skills – House rule: Perception is always a class skill, regardless of class.
  • Traits – You may select two traits, plus one from the Pathfinder Society.
  • Background – I would like to see a basic setup for your character. If I choose your character for the campaign, I would like to see additional information, including the items that I will mention further on.
  • Other Stuff – No hero points, no guns, no piecemeal armor, and no words of power. Those sound nice on paper, but it takes a lot of additional crunching to deal with, and I am already asking for a fair amount.

The Twist:
As ST is setup in a generic world, it makes things relatively easy to convert over to PFS. In this case, Tsar has been around for centuries, but it is perched on the edge of the Worldwound itself, separated from the hole only by some mountains that were formed as part of the rupture. Also, I would like to run this using the Pathfinder Society Field Guide as the entire group will be part of the group. Here are the additional rules/guides from that source:

  • Each person must pick a second faction that they belong to as part of the Pathfinder Society (PS), such as the Silver Crusade. Each member is considered to belong to the Grand Lodge faction (mostly to have access to that part of the prestige rewards) as their secondary faction.
  • Because you are starting out at 7th level, your characters will have had time to accrue some prestige. Each character may roll 1d10 to determine the number of Prestige Points your character has earned. If your character has used any PP, then that should be part of the initial crunch/background to determine how much Fame you have.
  • As mentioned previously, each character gets a wayfinder as part of their starting equipment. If you wish to trade the basic model in for another wayfinder (i.e. the Wayfinder of Shining), then your trade-in value is 500 gp.
  • The campaign will be starting in Nerosym, along the border of the Worldwound (to receive your final briefing and get a little role-playing in from the get go). It is expected that you will have all of your starting gear at that point, as you will not likely have a chance to buy anything before you leave the city.
  • Finally, the group as a whole will receive a few items to help them survive (at least initially) in the Worldwound as they make their way towards Tsar (via The Camp).

I am recruiting as of this posting (assuming Paizo’s servers don’t glitch again :( ) and will continue to recruit for the first batch of people until the end of the day on Halloween. I expect we will begin play the following week, as we get some loose ends (i.e. additional background, tie-ins to your faction, etc.) taken care of. I hope that everyone pays attention to everything as details are almost a must for a PbP campaign. If you have any questions...well, as Jesse Jackson always says "The question is moot!" 2 points towards your buy in if you can name the reference, and a bonus 2 points to the first person who can tell me the name of the actor that said it. Otherwise, I’ll try to answer questions to the best of my ability.

M

I've setup the discussion thread for those that want to talk about setting up a group and figure out the logistics (at least for now). Use this thread primarily to show interest and do the crunching.

I am intrigued and will ponder.

Dotting, going to try finding the player's guide...

OK, so there's no player's guide. So just spin up a toon? Is there someplace I can get some idea of the setting?

For DM's Eyes Only:

1. My favorite part of the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set, purchased at a garage sale in 1994, was the dungeon geomorphs. This allowed me to run games for my friends and me that did not require copious amount of graph paper and could be easily sorted and mixed for different encounters.

2. My favorite color is teal.

3. Peyton Manning.

4. Saturday Night Live, "The Question is Moot". Jesse Jackson was the only person to actually say the line.

Would the Machinesmith be an acceptable class choice?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thoughts at present are for a Half-Orc Ranger (Warden) 4 / Fighter (Unbreakable) 2 / Horizon Walker 1.

Will need to give appropriate thought to the specifics, but will essentially be a melee fighter with a focus on durability. Outside of combat will be a very accomplished scout and tracker.

Benevolent Overlord:
I didn't miss the hidden questions, just wanted to wait till I had a formal submission to answer ;)

Hmmm, the most death-defying adventure ever...must apply :)
Thinking of dragon aspected sorcerer...maybe :)

answers:

Sorry blue box was a bit before my time :)
red
Peyton manning
snl skit
the reverend himself

Your hidden ?s:
My favorite color is green, if either of them gets into the White House I will just want to die. The last one's already been answered by others (but SNL).

I'll read up more on Slumbering Tsar and see if I can come up with something compelling before Halloween. Nice long recruitment gives me time to think. I'm running my own game in the Worldwound at the moment, so this should be interesting. If the module is super deadly, I'm probably gonna go synthesist summoner.

Sounds like a good start, that's a rather interesting build I must say. Your skillset will come in very handy for this campaign. I'm looking forward to seeing the crunch on this one.

Spoiler:
just send me the answers via pm and I'll grant the 3 extra points.

Your answers are good and you've earned the extra 2 points for being the early bird.

It's getting late for me (I'm in Texas, CST, so it's 11:30 here), but I will take the tablet with me tomorrow to look at the machinesmith. It seems to be pretty popular on the forums, (and the link helps), so the answer is yes since it meets all requirements.

2 extra points for the reference, but someone beat you to the "actor" who was Jesse Jackson himself. I think the dragon sorcerer will work well, especially if you take a couple of feats and the PC dragon disciple. Hope to see some crunch soon.

If you got to Frog God Games website, you should get some sense. Basically, you're exploring an abandoned, evil city, and looking for artifacts. If you play your cards right (or not depending on your point of view), you may even take on a few epic creatures. The Pathfinder Society is sending you in to determine if there is any chance for habitation as well as items to add to the faction collections.

Your role (depending on which faction within the Pathfinder Society) might be more covert than others in your party. That's all I'll say for now, I can add some more background in the coming days, when I am more awake. LOL

Peachy keen. I will get up some crunch tomorrow.

Glad you like the concept :) - I'll work on the crunch and fluff and get it up soonish when it's polished enough.

As a general question - would you like us to limit the secret agenda to the established Society factions? - or would you be open to other groups / societies as well?

Dotting for interest.

Answers:

Blue Box: although I do remember the box cover, I don't recall what was in it. Even looking it up didn't ring a bell. Nice it had dice and a module, I guess.
Favorite Color: blue, no yel-- Aaaggghhhh!!!
White House: I don't care who's in the White House, football player or not. I'm Canadian.
Ioun stone: I'll let you know when I've figured out what I'll play.
Moot: SNL 1984. Well the announcer guy said it first, but Jesse was the one who said it on screen and the most often.

2 points for your other answers. You have a good point about the announcer, though; if you name him, I'll give you the bonus 2 points for Moot as well.

Your faction would primarily come from the PS, but if you can give me a convincing backstory for being from another faction (i.e. Aspis Corp.) I'll certainly consider it. If that is the case though, you should let me know through a pm to keep it close to your chest.

I am 5'9" as well, and do enjoy long walks on the beach too! I am a Libra, but my favorite color will be the same as yours if we walk together for a while. Hey! I'll even vote for your favorite candidate at the next election, even if I'm Canadian! Are you the one?

I'll be in Nerosym after Halloween, wearing a red rose on my greataxe...

Wait. You're a girl, right?

Will most likely be working on two Shoanti concepts: a "juicer" type warrior (Barbarian/Alchemist) and a shaman (Druid). I'm also intrigued by the Barbarian/Pathfinder Delver mix, but I'm not sure it will work.
Where can I find information on the PS factions?

Okay, done a little more reading and I'm definitely interested. I'm playing in Rappan Athuk now, and enjoying it. If Tsar is anywhere near as challenging as Rappan Athuk it will be fun.

How do you feel about synthesist summoners? I heard they were outlawed in PFS, but I don't play anymore so I'm not sure. I know they are more powerful than any other class, and with a game as deadly as this that might be a good thing. I'll wait to hear from you before I do any work on the character though.

Lord Manticore wrote:

Don Pardo.

I am equating a full blown Magus or Ranger, which I have been wanting to play at higher levels.

Answers:
I'm going out on a limb here, but since the only Blue box I remember in my 20 years gaming is this, I will go with that: D&D Expert Rules Boxed Set?

Definitely interested. Will work on some concepts this week. Might go with an aasimar cleric or oracle. Will you allow the alternate aasimar heritages?

Answers:
1. Before my time I'm afraid.

2. Green

3. Peyton Manning, Tebow is way too pious for my taste.

4. As others have said, SNL. Though the episode came out when I was 3 I love watching the older casts.

Give the man a cigar and 2 more points!! Don Pardo is awesome.

To answer your question, yes. If you have the supplement "Blood of Demons" or "Blood of Angels" you may use the alternatives (tiefling and aasimar, respectively) from that source. Just let me know as part of your crunch so I can refresh my memory.

Also, 2 bonus points for you.

OK. Initial thoughts are something like a Fighter (Lore Warden)/Duelist Dex-based fighter, maybe with a dip into Monk (and go into Duelist prestige class at 8th level). Will think about things more and see if another idea doesn't pop in and overshadow this one.

I've never heard anything about that archetype being outlawed. If it was so bad, why did Paizo print it in the first place? Of course, judging from all the monk threads out there...

I've actually thought about using the archetype myself in a couple of campaigns, so I have no real problem with it. Let's see how you crunch it, and we'll go from there. Were you planning to go straight synthesist or were you going to dip in another class?

You can some minimal information on the PFS factions in the free guide to organized play.
There i smore details in the purchased PFS Guidebook. But it really isn't needed.

I'm extremely interested. Especially since starting at mid levels.

I'm thinking either a dragon disciple switch hitter or an oracle.

Answers:
The best thing about the blue box set was that it was simple enough anyone could play. You didn't have to have someone that had been playing for 5 years teach it to you. I think we were 13 when we found it and had never heard of anything like it. Just picked it up and started in. Didn't have to buy umpteen books and spend hours pouring over the rules.
The best colour is obviously maroon. Everyone knows that.
Manning would be the best choice. He is a team player and pulls up those around rather than trying to make himself shine.

LOL I like your answers, so you get the extra point on that. If you go DD, would you go straight sorcerer or dip in bard, which I think is the other way you can get to DD. Oracles also tend to be pretty popular, being the sorc version of a cleric. I'm looking forward to seeing the crunch on that.

Interested - thinking of a Bard (Savage Skald)/Sorcerer (Ancestral Bloodline)...

I am dotting for interest. And I am a sheep in the Greek and Chinese Zodiacs.

Spoiler:
Blue box? Sorry, I started with AD&D in high school. But Blue is Better, what would life be without Blue?

Also, if you have played nearly everything, have you played Tales from the Floating Vagabond? That game is crazy, it is like they expect you to be drunk while playing it. My favorite color is yellow, but it has nothing to do with my bravery.

I wouldn't mind if either of them visited the White House. Although if you are talking about them living there, I think Peyton would be the better choice due to his experience. Although if you put in Tebow as his running mate, that could net him more votes.

Crunch: I have been trying to get into a game as a Pathfinder Chronicler for some time. I have a couple of builds I would like to try, including one that involves Cavalier levels. Are mounts a good idea in this game? I am a big fan of the cracked pearly white spindle, and will probably be purchasing one of those for my wayfinder. It is a good way to avoid death, at least right away. If there is room for me to have a horse or other mount, I will probably get one for them as well because dead mounts are no fun.

Dotting for interest.

DD - Definitely not bard. Prob 1 or 2 levels in a martial class, sorc 3-4 levels, then DD.

Oracle - not life (I'm already running that TT), not bones (animator just isn't my thing), but many of the others are pretty sweet.

Well, I prefer long walks in the woods rather than the beach. I'm a Virgo born in the year of the Dragon and love the color purple. My bedroom used to be entirely decorated in purple with unicorns all over the place, but now a days my husband objects to that sort of decorating. I didn't start playing til second edition and my first rpg game was Marvel Superheroes rather than D&D. As for the white house, I'm going to have to go with Manning since Tebow is now on my husband's most hated team.

I'll post back later when I've got a more solid concept of what I'd like to play.

As to your crunch questions, a Pathfinder Chronicler would work out very well given what I have in mind for this campaign. That being said, I'm guessing you won't be a front line fighter, even taking the cavalier as your primary class. To an extent, mounts will be useful, but once we get into the city, a land-based mount may be of limited utility.

Hello, DM Jelani here. I'm playing this guy in a module that is almost over. I'd love to flesh him out with a background, change his alignment to Neutral and raise him up to seventh level. Also a few other quirks needed to meet your rules.

Basic concept is a mermaid pirate that walks the land. He's just a total mercenary/combat junkie. He's in it for the money and the fights, not the morals. He's sarcastic, but loyal to his 'crew' unless they try to rob him.

Party role wise, he's a front line fighter who drops haste and is extremely versatile due to the Evolution Surge line of spells.

Edit:His faction would be Sczarni.

Edit edit:The numbers on the right side of the "/"s are with the eidolon bound. Except for the case of HP (the numbers on the right are the eidolon's THP), and BAB.

Liberty's Edge

I am very interested!

I would be playing a distant cousin of Nuar Spiritskin.

He came to Absalom and was promptly introduced to the Pathfinder Socity (whom Nuar owed a favor after saving him from the dungeons below the city).

The race would be asterion (minotaur-lite) or taurian.

I'd like to play one of the taurian racial archetypes.

Do we have a breakdown of what roles people have applied with thus far?

Wow I have to admit that Rasso looks pretty darn cool! The only fly in the ointment is that I will be asking you to play up your Str and Dex deficiencies during the campaign. Your not exactly a klutz, but your stats are going to make some rolls difficult for you. You probably already know that, but I just wanted to make a note of it. Have you had problems in your other campaign in whcih you lost your eidolon? If so, how did you handle it?

I like what you are thinking about with the asterion, so you may go ahead with that race if you wish. I also am interested in your backstory; are you going to go with the Shadow faction by chance? Also, are you planning to play with or against stereotype for your race?

As far as who has posted what so far, I'll try to setup a list here in a bit.

M

Rasso has never been without his eidolon (in a fight that is). That's like his Achilles heel, because without his Eidolon "power armor" he's literally a fish out of water (5 ft. movement speed, 7 strength, 9 dex). If I did lose it, I would cast summon eidolon to get it back. If I lost it, and was for some reason unable to resummon it I would likely die.

Liberty's Edge

That's why I asked what roles are covered.

If we need a party face I'd play a bard or a sorcerer with 'face' skills. He'll be played against his race's stereotypes and likely be Silver Crusade.

If there's room for a bruiser/brute I'll play him as a shameless example of such. He'll likely be aligned with Cheliax or the Szcarni.

I don't want to get too involved with writing a backstory until I know what's needed. Unless you're interested in seeing both?

OK, you guys are scaring me. (reaches for the cheese)

OK here is the list of people that have posted interest and what they are interested in. I'll try to update this on a semi-regular basis as we go along, as there seems to be plenty of interest so far.

Tanner Nielsen - Machinesmith
Mark Sweetman - Ranger/Fighter/Horizon Walker (sounds like a scout, correct me if I'm wrong)
Spazmodeus - Sorcerer (Dragon)
Edeldhur - Magus or Ranger
imimrtl - cleric or oracle
Dark Netwerk - Fighter/Duelist (possibly a dip in Monk)
Kydeem de'Morcaine - Dragon Disciple or oracle
Black Dow - Bard/Sorcerer
Joy - open for now
Rasso/DM Jelani - Synthesist Summoner
Feral - open for now
Thornborn - open for now
Oterick - open for now (my apologies for missing you)
heliopolix/Numar Nejem - Paladin (archetypes)/Bard
psychicmachinery - Alchemist (crypt breaker)
Paladin of Baha-who? (nice name btw) - looks open for now, but interested in playing a face

If I got something wrong, or the folks currently on this list want to change things around, just let me know. I'll also add new folks to the list as we go. If there is enough interest (around 22-25, we have 16 now), I may run a parallel campaign with another 8 people. We'll play it by ear as we go.

I am definitely interested in this.

This sounds as deadly as rappan athuk (and I love Frog god games).

Count me in for submission

Answers:

1)blue box: No idea, I was probably in diapers. First dnd played was 3E in 2001. Been playing since then, though,
2)Gold. albsolutely gold.
3)I hate football. That being said, I'd go with the guy that doesn't wear religion on his sleeve.
4)Clear spindle Ioun Stone
5)No idea. Also before my time.

I doubt there is any particular reason you decided to skip me, but I thought I should point it out.

The Exchange

alias of helipolix.

Will be going for front line damage dealer.

Basic story: Numair is Quadiran agent with strong moral convictions. He is a constant thorn in the side of his Venture Captain. Said captain hears about an expedition to Tsar, and decides it is perfect. Not only will Numair be out of his hair, but if he actually succeeds, there will be great wealth for Quadira!

Basic crunch: Paladin (Oath of Vengeance, Warrior of Holy Light) / Bard (Dervish Dancer). High Dex, High Cha. Lots of smite evil, buffs self & others with holy light.

Interested -- this would be my first pbp but I'm very excited. Maybe an aasimar oracle, healer/face/diplomancer type, or a controller witch, aasimar, sylph or elf. I will post answers and build later tonight.
