Wat was dat thing!? wrote:

Not long after the Chiefs left (and long before it could be revealed as part of the feast), the goblin chieftain effigy that Reg Runtweed and Plunger wheeled out began acting strangely.

It started slowly enough. At first, some of the nearby goblins thought their eyes were playing tricks on them when another goblin claimed the statue moved. Others said they heard voices talking about eating their tender, green flesh. Some of the goblins chose not to say anything, thinking that it was a chieftain trick and the big bosses were actually keeping an eye on the tribe while they were away to make sure none of the dumb goblins messed things up too much—or sat in their throne-chairs!

The effigy that the goblins built was intended as an endearing gesture celebrating their chieftains’ past accomplishments. Reg Runtweed and some other goblins ventured to the sites of their chieftains’ heroic battles and collected trophies that would remind them of their mighty victories. Unknown to Reg, one of the goblins snatched the skull of Vorka—the cannibalistic goblin druid and incorporated it and some of her bones into the statue.
Now her vileness seethes through the effigy, causing it to shudder to some semblance of life.

With the goblin chief effigy destroyed, the goblins of the Birdcruncher tribe slowly slink from their hiding places, ready once again to cheer their beloved chieftains. They bowed and scraped at their fearless leaders before, but now— after witnessing the destruction of the fireworks-laden monstrosity—the goblins of the Birdcruncher tribe would follow the PCs into Hell. It takes a bit of time, but with a little cleaning up and additional cooking, the feast goes on!

Congrats on finishing WBG3!

See you all next year for WBG4!

Qillion Jones is a gruff-looking, square-jawed brute. He usually wears a bandana to cover his short cropped, messy, sandy-colored hair, and is usually wearing an eyepatch (although it occasionally switches eyes). "Aye, ain't this shapin' up to be a fine crew. Clearly, we be sailin' a vessel this mission. Anyone know the score?"

VC - Sydney, Australia

From the Grand Lodge in Absalom you make your way down to the Docks and the scents and sounds are somewhat less pleasant than the rest of the city.

It is a bustling area where longshoremen constantly load and unload cargo destined for Absalom's markets and elsewhere. The district itself appears a rather rough place, and the ubiquitous Harbor Guard seems to keep an uneasy peace as they patrol, not paying too close attention to the goings on around them, only really acting as a deterrent ‘to the worst of it’ On On the street corners and darkened doorways of the run down businesses and sailors dives, young touts announce the services of all manner of businesses, not many of them sounding like the sort of wares or establishments you’d find in the upmarket areas; the names of the various taverns and inns involving at least a double entendre or some grim sounding fate and a mythical creature, with the names of the brothels even more lurid and suggestive.

Whilst watching the comings and goings, you learn more about ‘Pelicans’, or ‘pelican warehouses’ unique to Absalom from other bored sailors waiting for their next voyage. These buildings perch at the end of piers, allowing a ship to load and unload farther out from the busier docks. Many of them either accommodate smaller vessels that are in a hurry or larger ships unable to find an open dock. Rare these days, most pelican warehouses lie in disrepair, withered from storms and salt, and every year it seems another one falls into the harbor.

It is further revealed that an increased tax on this type of property keeps many of the owners from rebuilding and some have even relinquished the titles to their small warehouses, allowing them to fall into the hands of squatters and smugglers—or into the bay itself. He further explains that smugglers sometimes use small boats to slip under the warehouse, sawing a hole in the floor or prying boards in the night, and sneaking in to loot the place or just drop a crate into their boat from above and paddle away in the night.

All of this leaves you wondering just what sort of moonlighting you might otherwise get up to.

After some banter back and forth, the vessel you are waiting for docks at one of the piers - a sleek ship, clearly built for speed along the Inner Sea routes. Enquiries reveal you leave on the morning tide for Magnimar.

Just setting the tone for your interplay, first actual posts begin tomorrow

You arrive in Magnimar in the very early hours of the morning.

The light from the rising sun performs a splendid dance upon the windows of Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch's Magnimarian manor house as she pours the coffee. Her young servant brings in a platter of pastries and fruits before the Venture-Captain begins to speak about the mission at hand in her distinctively low, breathy voice.

"Welcome - I was told I should expect a group of fresh Pathfinders."

She eyes each of you for a moment as if trying to form an opinion about each of you.

“As I'm sure you're well aware, much of the reason Riddleport was founded where it was is because of its easily defendable position as well as the enigmatic Cyphergate, which has baffled scholars since its discovery. The Pathfinder Society has a keen interest in the Thassilonian monument as well, since solving its mysteries would undoubtedly unlock a number of other secrets regarding that lost empire. The Order of the Cyphers has been amassing support from outside sources for some years now, and scholars from all over the Inner Sea have come to aid Elias Tammerhawk and the cyphermages.”

Heidmarch takes a bite out of a chocolate-filled biscuit before continuing.

“Just recently, however, we received word from Elias himself that several of the visiting scholars haven't arrived in Riddleport Bay as expected. It seems as though a band of raiders, led by the Vudran pirate Alejia Netrav, has been intercepting the ships at sea, killing the crews, and destroying the ships. While Riddleport is hardly a stranger to the likes of pirates, Overlord Cromarcky has declared it illegal for any ships that wish to return to Riddleport Harbor to attack ships bearing the Riddleport flag. Alejia's ship is clearly coming from Riddleport—the attacks all took place just outside Riddleport Harbor—but attempts to identify her ship have been unsuccessful so far. "

She pauses for a moment to let the information sink in

“I needn't explain to you that the Pathfinder Society is also very much interested in the secrets of the Cyphergate, and that the deaths of these knowledgeable scholars have severely hindered progress in unraveling the artifact's mysteries. The unexplained attacks are beginning to wear on the other sailors of Riddleport as well, and if something isn't done about the matter soon, there will be no shortage of civil unrest, if not anarchy."

“In a few days, a ship called the Topaz Titan is scheduled to arrive in Riddleport Harbor from Minkai, bearing the acclaimed Tian scholar Hirako Gurukaza—who is also a former member of our Society. We fear that he may be Alejia's next target, and your task is to prevent her assault at all costs, both ensuring Hirako's safety and shoring up our relationship with Tammerhawk. I have heard rumors that some of Alejia's cronies have been storing their stolen goods somewhere in the Wharf District, so that might be a good place to start your investigation. Regardless, there is little time to waste, as there is no knowing exactly when the pirates will choose to strike the Topaz Titan.”

"Please let me know if you have any questions before I send you on the last part of your journey."

"Looks like our best lead is in the Wharf District, at any rate." She turns to Tetchy and grins. "Now now, we're workin for the Pathfinders now. We're saving lives first."

"Of course if we find any loose goods along the way...hehe."

VC - Sydney, Australia

Shiela gives the slightly-less-than-legit Pathfinders a mirthful grin at their interplay, and responds to Aquavius, “While she is a lowly pirate, Alejia possesses more enemies than friends in Riddleport, having backstabbed many business partners to get to where she is now. Her sudden disappearance and recent activities have only
spurred public resentment of her, and many would like to see her dead. In any case, don’t be surprised if your investigation gets you entangled with some of her less savory ex-associates.”

Arrrr we be getting right into the goodly vibe o this here hijinks upon Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Aquavius doesn't recall anything personally, but reckons she'd know where to start asking in Riddleport, a great den of pirates and thieves!

The sixth member of the party looked a bit out of place among her fellows. Her dress was a palette of pastels, as if she wished to carry springtime with her always. She had long, diaphanous locks of bright blue that swam around her slender form as if stirred by a breeze unique to her. Her hair was plaited with ribbons and beads of many colors as well as tiny silver bells that tinkled softly as she moved, the hem of her Varisian dancing skirts fluttering showily in her wake.

Her wide eyes shifted from a deep sapphire blue to a bright cyan as her brows quirked in apparent confusion. "But why would a pirate target a ship carrying learned scholars? It makes no sense. There are no riches to be gained from slaughtering folk and scuttling ships. Is there some reason to try and halt the study of the Cyphergate?"

Sorry for my late arrival. It would not be exaggerating to describe myself as a "complete mess" at this time.

"A curious thing to target scholars, normally"

"When I spoke to Elias, he was very cryptic about why someone would want to hinder his efforts as Speaker of the Order of the Cyphergate so much, but if I had to take a guess, I'd say this is a direct attack against Elias, rather than the scholars themselves."

Hey, I'm a pathfinder too, now. Tetchy says to Aquavius, clearly ruffled by the challenge, Joined a year ago after the sulphies got a bit too hot on my tail. Been saving the society pipsqueaks from dying ever since. Good fellers, all of 'em, but some of them just too frail. All it takes is one good blow to the noggins, and they go right down. Now you seem like you can handle yourself, but I'm not so sure about that frail frilly type over there, he says, pointing 'candidly' at Azura with a hand the size of a shovel.

Also, Tetchy is all riled up and good to go.

Riddleport Tourist Guide wrote:

Riddleport is the third-largest city in Varisia and is a haven for pirates and sea-faring brigands, who find themselves far to the north of the Arch of Aroden. Teeming with criminals and rogues of all kinds, Riddleport is full of potential danger and hard-to-avoid intrigue. Also known as the City of Cyphers, Riddleport takes its name from the Cyphergate, a giant stone arch spanning the natural cove around which the city is built. It is covered on both sides with ancient Thassilonian symbols, although their exact meaning is unknown.

The vessel makes its way to the Pirate haven of Riddleport and passes peacefully beneath the impressive Cyphergate.

You find yourselves in Wharf District. This raucous district lies hard on the edge of the very docks of the city and is where much of the city’s day-to-day action of commerce and thievery occurs. Nearest the docks are a series of warehouses and cheap grog shops where merchant and pirate crews mingle in a haze of rum-soaked debauchery and blood. Once the most commercially successful portion of the city, its aged facade and Riddleport’s slow slide toward legitimacy have seen much of the action move northward to the Free-Coin District, leaving the Wharf District a tattered shadow of its former self. Inns and shops have grimed windows and peeling paint hinting at a prosperity that no longer exists, which is just fine for the run-of-the-mill pirate crew.

Activities and actions?

Venture-Captain Balentiir has arranged for the party to travel to Eto as part of a trade caravan of heavily laden camels, and he pays for the cost of their travel. The journey overland is uneventful.

The immense rock walls that ring Eto rise from the horizon like a shimmering mirage that gradually sharpens into focus. The city sits inside an elevated crater with sheer, weathered sides broken only in two places by heavily guarded gates. Long lines of caravans wait in a meandering queue awaiting entrance as officials search their cargos for contraband and calculate taxes.

Water sellers, food vendors, and guides march up and down the lines peddling their wares and services to the visitors. Beyond the gates, the main thoroughfares fan out around the various districts of the city before dwindling into the dozens of pathways that flow through the bazaar like the delta of the great River Sphinx

The walls of the cliffs rise 60 feet above the city. The gates remain open during daylight hours and are closed at night, though a patrol of guards is stationed nearby to review any requests to enter after nightfall.

The caravan driver starts giving you a commentary "Each caravan or group of travelers is assigned one or more trios of officials, each of which consists of two guards and a customs agent. Eto is a hub of trade in Osirion’s interior, and these officials ensure that no one brings dangerous contraband, such as certain drugs or large quantities of explosives into the city. All Osirian relics are documented and taxed; the opening of Osirion to treasure-hunters by the Ruby
Prince’s decree stimulates the economy, but the Ministry of Culture ensures that the kingdom receives a cut of all finds and withholds artifacts of special importance. If you have anything you don't thin you want them to find, you have a few moments to make them disappear like a merchants morals faced with a wealthy fool"

Up ahead a trio is awaiting your caravan, conversing between themselves...

"Good fellers, all of 'em, but some of them just too frail. All it takes is one good blow to the noggins, and they go right down. Now you seem like you can handle yourself, but I'm not so sure about that frail frilly type over there..." he says, pointing 'candidly' at Azura with a hand the size of a shovel.

"Haha, no worries mate. I know you're on the up and up." She laughs. "Honestly, it's types like her you need to be worried about the most. You can never get close enough to land one on the noggin. Usually I'm wrapped up in vines or blinded by lights. I know this one guy. If he didn't like you, you were dancing a jig while his friends beat you silly. Now that was fun!"

At the gates of Eto, Aquavius (for once) has nothing to hide.

We're back to land-lubbing now, so let's get this over with. We're looking for stolen loot, in a warehouse. You got loot, you need to shift it, that how it works. Might as well ask around, see if anyone has been trying to get rid of stuff lately.

Now I'm not must of the asking type, you know. With a face like this, you're not in it to make friends, you see. Any of you good at making friendly?

Aquavius shakes her head. "Ugh, my head. too much rum last night. Haha, no such thing, but I thought we were in a desert."

Aquavius tries to help Nacalli find more information about the local groups here, but she keeps referring to locals in Eto. Oops.
