I read how another group once had a teleport mishap. Rolled randomly, GM looked at a map.... Dargaard Keep. Not sure if it was a TPK but it wasn't good.
Loren also took ranks in ride because "horses" are cool. <_<
o:-)
I also think being gone that long is a recipe for disaster.

Ah yeah teleport is 5th level, never mind. Also scrying only counts for seen casually so that's somewhat risky - possibly less risky than leaving that seeker 'in charge' of the refugees for 11 days! Even without the dragon armies he'd cause a disaster.
OK then I guess we get to drag them with us. Poor them!
Jakun Stormhoof
That was tough! Had to ask questions without allowing my own meta knowledge spill over into Jakun's limited understanding.
I think we know enough now to piece things together when we get there at least!
Jakun Stormhoof
I am fine with just collapsing it without trapping them under it. Really just looking to slow them down, I don't think two days which would be three days with travel away from the refugees is a great idea.

Are there any horses with the column, such that those who stay behind would be able to move more quickly and catch up? (I'm assuming Jakun doesn't yet have access to Teleport; so setting aside risk of teleport errors, that's not even a live option.)
I'm torn but, absent a way to catch up, I'm inclined to agree with Jakun. I don't think the answer is to have the column wait for two days while he army catches up just to kill some of them in an avalanche and delay them for an unknown number of days.

No horses or other pack animals. It's all foot traffic.

Btw Samnell not sure if you saw it in your recruitment thread (loads of posts!) but I thought I'd mention the mythal idea again
just because they are cool. Somewhere I have the Myth Drannor box set - never got to run that :)

I ran a Ruins of Myth Drannor chronicle and the Fall of Myth Drannor as a time travel adventure. Bit of tweaking for each but they were pretty great games.
Two of my PCs were slain by the Trio Nefarious ;0)
They didn't so much like that but I did!

Rather than post OOC in the gameplay thread, figured I'd just do this here. I'm trying to make sure I understand the lay of the land.
It sounds like we have two (potential) paths forward. Relative to the rift, one is the far side, the other is the near side.
The far side looks like easier passage but could make for a longer travel time to our destination, raising questions about food and supplies.
The near side is more direct and likely to lead to our destination, but we haven't scouted it and there may not be a path for the column to take. If there is a path, the column may not get through it in time before the army arrives and attacks the rear of the column.
Jakun knows this:
If there was a pass or opening in the mountains to the south and east, it might be directly to the Plains of Dergoth. Zhaman should be near to the center of the plains, so they may even have gained some ground.
If there is a pass to the SE, is that helpful for us? Does that apply to the near or far side?
Sorry, I'm a little confused as to where exactly we are and where we're heading.

Yes. You would also need to find a way to cross the rift or follow it out to its conclusion, which may be quite far out of your way indeed.

Also so.

Not a problem; you came late to the madhouse. :)
The Companions have decided their best bet for getting the refugees to safety is to find the dwarf kingdom of Thorbardin. Jakun knows it closed its gates to refugees a few centuries ago. Those refugees formed an army under the black robe wizard Fistandantilus. He had a fortress at Zhaman and blew himself and his army up there. The Companions have reason to believe that the ruins of Zhaman will hold at least information on how to find Thorbardin's gates. The weird oracle thing, the Memory of Stone, told Jakun that there's some way within Zhaman to actually get the gates open if the dwarves don't want to play ball.

Great. Thanks!!! I remember a lot of these events from the novels but not always the name. (Or, depending on the reference, all of the multiple names for the same thing.) I was literally sitting here going, "Zhaman? I thought we were going to Thorbardin," and didn't remember that Zhaman and Skullcap are the same.
And the reference to whether there is a pass to the south and east...that's the near side?
I don't suppose anyone can fly or summon up something that will stay long enough to scout the area and report back in an understandable language?
(Dang I wish we had horses. Would make scouting ahead so much easier.)
Caitlyn Weissman
I'm tempted by the near side. Perhaps we could send a few of us ahead - forced march. Maybe climb up something to get a good view and figure out if it's worth it?
Loren uth Brasel
Well, if Jakun can fly with enough duration to the spell for it to work, that might be ideal. Otherwise, I'd agree with Caitlyn and it's why I've been asking. I'm not sure if Loren would be comfortable going straight to bed without a plan for the next day.

I don't think it's feasible to do it the night before due to the sight at night being limited (even with a Darkvision spell). Plus he was still learning a new spell.

Hmm. Fair point. I guess then the question is how quickly can you get it done the next day. I don't think we can spend another day with the column in neutral. Put another way, should some of us who are land-bound start marching that direction just in case?

Only problem there is that if it is the wrong direction, it would eat up time and resources to change directions. I say the camp packs up to go, hunters hunt and then once Jakun returns, the column is led in the right direction. This way hopefully more people can forage and bring in a bit more food. If we go to Dergoth the pickins might be slim...

Southeast is the near side and you're presently northwest of where Jakun thinks Zhaman is.

A real world way of safely crossing ice (although not if it's melting) is sand - lots of it. Apparently been used for thousands of years.

I guess i shoul mention: boyfriend is taking me to Disneyland to celebrate the day of my whelping (it happened last week). So, posting will be sporadic until Thursday. Lease bot me as needed

You were just whelped last week? My, you're a fast grower. ;-)
Enjoy! Wish my husband would do that but he hates amusement parks.

I dread the day the kids want to drag me to Disneyland ;( I know it will happen too!
Anyway hope you enjoy!

In all seriousness, Samnell's clarification does change my mind. In character, Loren would be worried about the risk of a collapse and "dead end", but it sounds like weather/temperature is an issue whichever way we go and right now he wants to avoid losing any more time. To metagame it just slightly I'd expect another fly spell and some knowledge (engineering) will help us figure out what to do and maybe even collapse it behind us. My mind has completely changed.
PS, "Help us, Paladin Mittens. You're our only hope (at a medallion of faith in a totally not 100% transactional way)." ;-)

Fireballs put in the right place would probably take the bridge down. Might take three or four, though. Determining the right place would be know: engineering, much aided by a close, flying inspection of the bridge.

Often I find that if I fall behind in updates, I need to make time to simply update a Discussion Thread to inform the PCs of a particular game that I am either going to be posting later in the day or week or will be on a break form the boards for one reason or another.
To save time updating so many damn threads I am going to open this thread and link all of my DM aliases (and PC aliases) to this thread to inform people as to my status. So if I am missing for a time, just go ahead and click on the link in my Avatar and you will be able to ascertain my board status.
My sincerest apologies if this is a bit of an inconvenience where you are waiting on me for an action but posting "I will be away for the next 3 days" 47 times (or more) is just not working for me any longer. Thank you for your understanding!

Aw man, dude. I'm really sorry to hear that. Marriage is not easy. Wishing you the very best through this hard time.
Jakun Stormhoof
guys really sorry for my lack of play right now. the thing is ive been having marriage problems and now my wife is filing for divorce. i was staying off here to work on my marriage we see how well that worked
I am sorry to hear that as well, I can relate trust me! Hope all will be well for you. We will be here if you need to be here and if you need to not be here we understand that too.
Storyteller Shadow
"Obviously", grinned Caitlyn, "I imagine we'd have them encamped a short distance away, but you know what they say, curiosity killed the cat."
You know we could send them in first - to set off any traps and get eaten by the undead that are sure to inhabit such a place. Knowing where all the trouble is we kinda waltz in fight it on our terms and take all the loot.
On a less somber note I am glad I swallowed my drink before I read that post! :-)

I'm so sorry. :( You have nothing to apologize for; you made the right choice.
