Actually both Balthazar and Sharmain claimed a +1 bonus, but both would hit even without it so it's fine.

Round 7
Zac pours his heart into boosting the engines, and Ratatat takes the ship away at top speed, but the Besmaran whelp is keeping up and even managing to close the distance once again. Bat Elf targets the brain once more, while Faria rallies Balthazar to wait for just the right moment to take his shot. Just as the whelp is closing in, Balthazar and Sharmain open fire. Both weapons find their target and do an incredible amount of damage.

17 damage this round! That means two more critical thresholds. Plus, Bat Elf successfully targeted a system so the 19 that Sharmain rolled is another crit. The first is the targeted brain, the other two are random:

Crit 2: 1d100 ⇒ 48
Crit 3: 1d100 ⇒ 38

Both to propulsion, so its ability to pilot is now 'malfunctioning'

The Besmaran whelp opens its mouth wide in what would be a roar, if it had been any kind of terrestrial beast. Simultaneously, everyone onboard hears a wave of static coming over the ship's communications. The sound dies away, and the whelp is left hanging just off the side of the ship, looking confused and battered. It turns tail and prepares to flee, although it is flying very weakly at this point.

The Besmaran whelp will do nothing but try to escape from now on. You can pursue if you want, but based on what folks have been saying I assume you'll let it go. In which case, the starship combat is over!

Survivor's Salvation

Ratatat is able to bring the ship over to some of the drifting Besmaran whelp remains to bring some tissue samples on board and store them safely in the science lab.

When the crew members are ready to turn their attention to the planet below, a scan from orbit confirms the information that Guidance provided earlier. The planet known to you as Colony-293 has galactic standard gravity, and the air, though breathable, has a mildly corrosive nature that will disrupt technological devices used on the surface.

Mechanically speaking, after one hour of exposure to the atmosphere, every time you use an item that can be targeted by technological effects, you have to roll a d6, and on a 1 it doesn't work for that round. Items labeled as analog are not affected.

You identify the location marked as the site of the outpost, but unfortunately a storm is disrupting the ship's sensors. It appears to be a very high-intensity electrical storm that would be too dangerous to land in. There is a safe landing site several miles from the outpost, from which you can approach on foot.

Earlier

“Don’t judge so swiftly, Faria.” Bat Elf frowns, watching the fleeing whelp. There’s a sadness in the grey eyes that lie behind the mask. “In darkness of earth, the seed germinates. In darkness of mind, ideas are born. And what child does not begin in darkness of womb? Creatures can arise from darkness, and be reborn. I know, for I was one.”

Bat Elf paces around the room, her bat cape flipping around her heels. “Don’t get me wrong. It was a threat to our mission, and a predator. But it was also unique, and I did not relish having to hurt it.”

★ ---- ★ ---- ★ ---- ★

Now

Bat Elf scans the planet. “The good news is that we should be able to land safely a few miles from our target site, despite that nasty electrical storm. The bad news is that the corrosive atmosphere will disrupt much of our equipment, including our beloved Bat Tools. Are we ready, Bat Friends?”

Then she turns to Alfred. “Do you want to join us on this mission, Alfred?”

Alfred grabs his camera. “I would not miss it for the world, Miss Apastron.”

Survivor's Salvation

The atmospheric effect doesn't bother constructs, so no, androids are not affected. That would be really unpleasant. Also, here's the info for additional scans. I won't make you roll for this scan information; assume that interference limits any more specific details.

The ship orbits for a while, and periodic scans reveal that the entire surface of the planet is prone to similar electrical storms. Sometimes they clear up quickly, but others linger for as long as you watch them. The storm over the outpost loses strength slightly, but is still too dangerous to land in.

By scanning clear locations, Bat Elf discovers that the outpost's continent does have signs of small settlements and intelligent life. It's difficult to tell anything more about them from orbit.

* * * * *

Landing the ship is a little bumpy but safe. Stepping out onto the planet's surface, you see a flat landscape, covered out to the horizon with tall amber grasses, ranging from three to five feet tall.

You all head out in the direction of the outpost coordinates, but after a short time two figures suddenly appear out of the grasses ahead of you. They are both bipedal and humanoid, standing roughly four feet tall, with short flat snouts and eyes that are pure black. Their heads are covered with shaggy green hair that looks more like thick fur as it extends down over their shoulders and upper arms. Across their faces and bodies they each have patterns of yellow dotted lines that are glowing faintly as if bioluminescent, and they are wearing thin woven garments.

One is holding a long spear, the other carries what looks to be a rifle, and both have round devices that resemble baskets, piled high with grassy shoots. They tilt their heads back and forth as they look at you.

"Baruuk t'cha nalqiq?" The one holding a spear speaks in a loud voice.

You can make Sense Motive checks to try to understand their intentions, and if you want to communicate you can attempt Culture (to use gestures and try to make yourself understood) or use any other means at your disposal.

Zac checks his gear. He changes out of his standard shipboard coveralls and puts on his environmental clothing (radiation) over his second skin. He pops a pair of frag grenades and two extra battery packs into his cheek pouches. He takes his laser rifle out of it's case and gives it a once over, and double checks his laser pistol. He wonders should I take both lasers? He decides with all the atmospheric induced equipment problems, it makes sense to have a backup, and straps on the pistol. He double checks the laser power packs to verify that they are fully charged.

Ready, he heads for the bridge to watch the landing. Beautiful! he thinks as he takes in the lightning dancing around the towering thunderheads as the ship slices through the air, streaming condensation trails off the nose and wingtips, glistening white in the sunlight.

After the ship lands and the team has disembarked, Zac takes a moment to sniff the air, feel the ground and take in the view. Another world! This is why I signed up! Zac takes a tiny vial and fills it with soil from the ground and then puts it away. One more for my collection.

“Alright Miss...” Alfred stops filming for a moment, and shifts to projection mode. The whole Bat Elf show is a silly project, but as Miss Apastron’s home health care aide, Alfred understands that this role she’s adopted, and the whole persona of Bat Elf, has turned her from someone traumatised by the Gap to an active and productive citizen again. He’s not about to jeopardize this reinvention that she’s created. Even the fan mail from the Bat Elf show has been helpful. It’s good for Sonarisa to have friends and a purpose again.

He rolls up the sleeves of his tuxedo as he works, his face concentrating. As Bat Elf spreads her cape as a projection screen, Alfred projects some of the footage that he’s already filmed of the mission.

When Ratatat starts making some gestures and whooshing noises, both of the creatures look down as if they're seeing him for the first time, and then freeze for a moment. One of them loudly exclaims, "Lauta! Me lauta! Lau Shu Po fettar!" Chuula looks wildly around and then with his eyes open wide he takes some of the grass shoots out of his basket and tries to hand them to Ratatat. Rizt looks over at Zac and approaches, almost shyly. She tries to offer him some shoots as well, even though Zac doesn't appear to be paying attention to them.

Culture 10:
Among their speech you recognize the name Lau Shu Po: she is also known as Grandmother Rat, a goddess of assassins, rats, spies, and thieves. It seems that the two ysoki are being associated with her.

(This is a check to recall knowledge; as a reminder, anyone can attempt a DC 10 check even untrained.)

Sharmain's gestures are less well received, though it's unclear why. They watch her warily, not in a hostile way, but they don't get too close. She takes the opportunity to observe them in return.

Sharmain:
You pay particular attention to the glowing yellow patterns visible through their fur. Seen up close, it is clearly a natural bioluminescence, similar to a type you have seen on other life forms. You speculate that it might provide a mild form of resistance to electricity and fire. You rolled very well on life science, not to mention having the xenoseeker theme, so if there's something else you'd like to know about them you can ask.

When Bat Elf holds out her cape, the two approach with gentle cooing noises. They examine the material closely, and then get very excited when Alfred starts showing the footage. Both kneel in front of the cape and watch with rapt attention. When it finishes, they leap up and start chattering again. They gesture repeatedly in the direction that they came from, and Rizt even pulls gently on Ratatat's arm. It seems clear they want you to go with them in that direction.

Also looking for general state of health, potential natural weapons, indications of any significant relationship between the two. Given my suspicions regarding the bioluminescence, I would also observe for signs of exposure to electricity, fire, or other elemental forces.

Whoa. Is there anything else that I can get off of that roll?

“Well, whatever it is, it appears the association is favorable. Let’s go with it for now.” Turning to Zac and Ratatat, she asks in an amused tone, “Do you think that they’d have a better association with me if I had been ‘Rat Elf’ instead?”

Then she turns to Sharmain. “I’d talk to you in Castrovellian, but I don’t think these two would like the sound of that language. They reacted to you being a lashunta, and I don’t think they liked it. What are the chances do you think that there are lashunta here, somewhere?”

Responding to Bat Elf, Sharmain replies "I have not heard of any Lashunta expeditions to this region but that is not my area of learning and who knows who the Knights of Galorian may have brought with them. We have no idea if the expedition was fully abandoned or if some remained.

If you think that it is my Lashunta appearance that has them wary of me then perhaps we should indeed hold off from speaking Castrovellian. I do not wish to upset or alienate our new potential friends."

As she unobtrusively moves close to Bat Elf, Sharmain whispers "Of course, if there is something you wish to keep private between us we could take the risk. What languages does Alfred know? It would be awkward but is it possible he could translate between Elven and Azlanti?"

As soon as she utters the words Sharmain is embarrassed and thinks to herself Those spy dramas have gone to your head! Back in the real world right now. You have a job to do.

Surprised, Sharmain transmits her reply to Bat Elf.

Bat Elf:
Hah! I did not know that was an option. Your selection of Castrovellian made me think for some reason you wanted a private conversation without the rest of the team involved. Though I could not think of a reason why.

So what do you not want our two new friends (and maybe others) to hear or at least understand? Do you think they understand more Common than they are letting on?

I'm fascinated by this whole situation. We have so much to learn.

Bat Elf responds to Sharmain. I don't know what they understand and what they don't, yet. I'm just intrigued at their reactions to Zac and Ratatat. Why Lao Shu Po, and why here?

She turns to Ratatat and Zac.

Mysticism to recognize Lao Shu Po: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

"I know only a little bit about Lau Shu Po. I have heard about her connection with underworld groups, criminals, assassins and spies. But... I also know enough to know that no god is just one thing." Bat Elf feels at a loss. Matters of gods and faith -- what is that to her, who is a creature of science? And yet... The gods live and carry with them the secret of the Gap. Understanding them is also part of understanding the central mystery of the universe. "What is she beyond that? What does she mean to Ysoki? Is she a trickster god, or a protector of the downtrodden? Is there more than her than an outsider to her faith might comprehend?"

Survivor's Salvation

Sharmain:
The two of them appear to be generally in good health. They have no natural attacks beyond what anyone could do with a good punch. For the relationship between them, you would need to observe cultural interactions with larger groups of their race, to be sure. Neither of them have marks of being injured from elemental forces, but as you're pondering the question you do hear the noise of one of the planet's not-too-distant electrical storms, which might well be connected.

Bat Elf: Such high rolls! You know quite a lot about Grandmother Rat and her impact in the Pact Worlds. Everything you've written is about all I know on the subject as well.

Chuula and Rizt look from face to face as you discuss amongst yourselves, clearly not understanding any of the words. But when some of you begin to follow, they part the grasses in that direction and usher you forward.

You can continue your conversations along the way if you want to make any more plans, but I'll jump to the arrival.

Not far from that place, you come to a clearing that is occupied by a small village. You see between 30 and 40 houses roofed with woven grasses. Chuula leads you along a path that winds between buildings. You spot a number of the same race, most of them hiding in doorways, peeking out as you pass. There are some excited whispers when Ratatat and Zac walk past. Your guide ignores all of them and leads you up to one larger circular house. A stylized image of a rat perches on its wall above the entrance.

Chuula calls out. In response a slightly larger female comes out of the building. She is wearing clothing decorated with an elaborate swirling pattern. She talks to the two of them for a moment, then turns to you, points to her own chest, and says, "Yuusht." She then utters a few more words, points to the sky, and makes a waving side-to-side gesture with her hand. She looks at you expectantly.

Sense motive 12:
The gesture she's making looks remarkably like the movement of the Besmaran whelp you just defeated. She seems to be asking you about it.

As the party progresses, following the locals, Sharmain observes "Those storms are a little worrying. One, in particular, seems to be closing with us. I hope where ever we are being led will provide us with some shelter."

On arrival at the village, Sharmain tries hard to be invisible while increasing her efforts to study and absorb all she observes.

Finding herself somewhat overwhelmed with all the new input and her first real First Contact situation, Sharmain focuses in on the apparent leader, now gesturing at them. It looks like she wants to know about their space encounter. Should they show more video? Will it be beneficial or detrimental to admit they damaged the creature and chased it off? Perhaps one of the others has a clearer idea of what they should do. Sharmain is leaning toward full disclosure but is acutely aware that is not always wise.

Zac looks around at the few guns he can see and tries to identify them to see if they are offworld import, or if he can see signs in the village of manufacturing capable of producing them. He also looks for any other items the could be from offworld.

“Yes, they’re asking about the Besmaran Whelp. Fascinating.” Bat Elf joins the interpretive dance with Yuusht. Pulling off the Bat Cape again, she says, “We filmed the entrance of the Whelp coming to us. Alfred, can you play the initial footage of it?”

Repeating Yuussht’s moves, she then points to the whelp picture and asks, “This?” Once again, the important thing is not the words — it’s the rising interrogative sound. She waits for the sign of recognition in Yuusht’s body language and explanations. Then she pantomimes chasing the whelp and scaring it away.

Then it’s time for Bat Elf’s own pantomime. She points to the whelp picture and then points up at the sky. Then she points to the ground and Yuusht. She shows the distance between the two. “Whelp. How do you know?” She tries to gesture her confusion, and once again makes the interrogative noise.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Pointing at Yuusht, and then to the sky, she asks, “Are you from there?” Pointing at herself and then Yuusht, she gestures with her hands to show two people talking. “Can we all learn together?”

Survivor's Salvation

Zac:
You get a good look at the technology in the village. In general, it is below the standard of most races in the Pact Worlds, but they do have some projectile weapons like the rifle that Rizt is carrying. There are also several small vehicles that look like they would be powered by gas. One of the houses you pass has a yard spread with bits of machinery, so someone probably has the ability to at least repair the technology you see, if not create it as well. You do spot one junkcycle that has a large symbol of Iomedae on its side, so it was probably scavenged from the outpost you came to find.

Enough people have rolled well at Sense Motive that I will interpret the rest of the communication, as much as you are able to follow without sharing a language.

Yuusht looks at the footage of the whelp and bows deeply, indicating that it is what she was asking about. She watches Bat Elf's gestures solemenly and appears to understand the questions. She points to her own eyes and then up to a point in the sky, and makes some explosion-like gestures with both hands. Evidently they could see signs of the combat from the planet's surface.

She thinks for a moment, and then gestures for you to wait. She enters the roundhouse and then returns with a sort of bound book. She carries it carefully, as if it is a precious item. A few others bring over some oblong shapes about two feet wide, and Yuusht takes a seat on one. There aren't enough for everybody, but she gestures respectfully for Zac and Ratatat to sit down first.

Yuusht opens the pages of the book, and you can see that they are filled with drawings and symbols of an unknown writing system. You see many pictures of a rat, probably meant to be Lao Shu Po, but she skips past those and goes to a page near the back.

There is a picture of one of their kind, looking old and infirm. Next to it is an image of him being put into a hole in the ground, with others gathered around. On the next page is a stylized drawing of the Besmaran whelp, flying up into the sky from the ground. She looks to see if you understand, and points back and forth from the old person to the whelp. It appears they believe the whelp is a reincarnation of one of their own.

She then hands the book off to another and makes a wide gesture at your party. She holds out her arms as if lifting something heavy, then makes the gesture for the Besmaran whelp and flips one hand over. The sense that you get is, she is saying you were strong, and it was defeated in a fair fight. She then gestures again with the movement of the whelp flying away, and claps Bat Elf on the shoulder, as if to thank you for letting it escape.

Finally she points to each of you, mimes the ship landing on the ground in front of her, and looks up questioningly. She repeats Bat Elf's gesture of people talking to each other. 'Why did you come here?' she seems to be wondering.

As Yuusht indicates that she’d watched the Batmobile’s battle, Bat Elf’s intrigued, and her brows raise with the implications. “Sharmain, is it possible that their senses are good enough to watch a space battle from planet side? Or do you think that they may be using some sort of telescope or other tech?”

But when Yuusht shows the soul transforming into the Whelp, Bat Elf trembles, tears glistening in her eyes. Images flash through her mind from her former life. White walls. Walking barefoot in her hospital gown, feeling too numb to move, to act. Then a vid of Luwazi Elsebo. Then the moment she put on her mask, and was reborn. Laughing, jumping, living.

“Wait. That happened to me, too!” She pats her own chest. “My former self died, and then my soul flowered into something else. Not as glorious a transition as that of your people, but a transition nonetheless. I don’t know if you are speaking in metaphors, or if this is the true life cycle of your people, but this speaks to me. I too have emerged from the chrysalis as a new being.”

"I haven't seen any indication of heightened senses so I suspect Zac is correct and they have access to some technology, probably from the old outpost. I wonder if they have a translation device somewhere, or if there is one still at the outpost, it would be so helpful to be able to communicate more effectively.

"Given the indications from their gestures, whether it is truly part of their life cycle or more likely part of their belief system, I sure am glad we did not kill that beastie!

"Bat Elf, you seem to have established the best communication, though Zac and Ratatat clearly have a special status and respect. Do you think one of you could find out more about what technology they have and maybe what state the outpost is in?"

In response to Yuusht's question of why did we come here, Ratatat will point towards the outpost and make building shapes with his hands.

Then he snaps his fingers as a better idea comes to mind. Ratatat grabs a piece of paper, draws the logo of the Knights of Golarion on it, shows it to them, then points again in the direction of the outpost.

Survivor's Salvation

When Yuusht sees the icon, she freezes for a moment, and then stands up. She makes a gesture at some of the bystanders, and they start bustling around with some activity you're not sure about. Yuusht is avoiding looking at Ratatat, and her stiff manner is different from the confidence she has shown until now. It seems she understood the inquiry but is not comfortable with it.

In the midst of the bustle, one of the inhabitants who stands about two feet tall comes up to Zac and tugs on his sleeve. She covers her hands with her eyes, and then points up at the picture of the rat and then to a nearby alley filled with random clutter. She then looks at him with wide eyes and tugs again. A group of others around the same size are all watching intently. It seems they are inviting their guests for a game of hide-and-seek.

If you want more information, you can attempt Diplomacy or Bluff checks to get them to open up. You can also participate in the game by making a stealth check. (That doesn't have to be Zac, by the way, he's just the one they approached.) Also, Ratatat, Zac, and Bat Elf do get +2 bonus on any of those checks, for having the favor of the village.
