The priest has regretfully heavy armor and a large axe, the monster a double dose of ugliness.

Slowly the team leaves the toxic lake and dangerous heat behind, retiring back to the iron fortress where the heat is merely oppressive. The monk and the prisoners have already left (you saw them off to the cart tracks), although you should probably have little difficulty in catching them up if you wanted to follow them.

The dead cultists at the bottom of the mine cart tracks remain dead.

Is there anything else to explore in the caves? We give it a good search but move on if nothing interesting is found, catching up with the monks.

Before they head out of the acid lake. Meran casts Detect Magic on the area to see if there's anything "interesting" down there. "I can't believe I couldn't climb the stupid rock."

In the horendously hot cave with the lake, Meran detects a lingering enchantment on an old piece of paper stuffed into a scroll tube used scroll. The priests breastplate is also magical, as was a small wand he carried but didn't use.

During your first nights rest on the travel back, you have a dream of Amenopheus. "I have sensed the completion of your work at Tar Kuata. Tahonikepsu and myself are interested in learning more about what has happened and any connection you may have uncovered between the monastery and the jeweled sages. I will contact you again tomorrow. You will have 25 words to reply to me, think carefully on what you will say."

Indeed shortly after you break your fast the next day. "“This is Amenopheus. As requested, please report on your most important findings so that we can court a new candidate or seek another jewel.

If you want to do anything more in the mines we can probably retcon that as we start back through the mountains.

With the evil priest taken down, Garn finally allows himself to morph back to his original form. He limps towards Snowball, holding himself gingerly from the bad wounds, and pat his faithful companion for guarding him.

We did look in the carts and elevator though, didn't we? if not then Deluge will, with a detect magic. He's not interested in a dip in the lake or the moldy goods though.

Deluge will cast an endure elements on himself each day as they travel.

@deluge, you looked inside the carts, but didn't find anything. Nobody went near the elevator, but it doesn't look very functional..

@Sajan, one of the things Amenopheus was after was anyone who might be valuable to acquire as a new jewelled sage candidate

Yeah... sorry... got nothing, but if Sajan did meet someone like that Intelligence Check to Remember: 1d20 ⇒ 1, he'd perhaps let the old Amenopheus know... but right now he's pissed for having his beauty sleep disturbed... his cognitive functions are deeply impaired... he is trying to fight the mounting anger with inner serenity, but all he finds inwardly is a supply of migraine and muscle pain from the lack of good regenerative sleep!

Well, there are at least a few monks you have met and had a chance to talk with. Aramaya you duelled with on the plinth. Bertrag who rescued the slaves and kept them alive in the mines until you arrived. Aeotsep was the monk who guided you so well through the challenges. Menkha was the monk who met you at the start. Itephta is the head of the monastery. You might decide none or several of them.

The rest of the trip back is hard, but without major peril. Between Bertrag and your own resources there are no threats you do not easily overcome. It is a tired group that a few days later finally makes its way back to Tar Kuata.

While the commonly accepted path toward self-perfection rarely involves revelry, even stoic Tar Kuata celebrates news of the cultists’ defeat. Bertrag narrates his account of your deeds, omitting his own contribution. Aeotsep warmly congratulates you. "Overcoming such a trial is another step on your own path."

Honoring their bargain, Itephta and Menkha formally transfer their
Sky Key component to the Pathfinder Society. Itephta also gives you a sealed letter to deliver to the Society,
"It extends the hand of friendship from our community to your masters." he explains.

Itephta and the other senior monks gather together in conference. At the end he comes forward. "You have proved your worth. Any of you who wish are welcome to join our community here."

Sajan remains terse in his description, but does reveal that all the monks here are deserving of the Scarab Sages' admiration. In his personal thoughts, away from the prying of the Scarab Sages, he adds, '...but are the Scarab Sages worthy of THEIR admiration?'

"Bertag, you are too humble. You keep everyone safe until we arrived. This wouldn't be a success without you." Meredith makes sure to congratulate the man.

"I would not mind some training here, but I know I wouldn't be able to stay for the long run. The trees call to me..." Meredith stares outside.

Meredith spends some time learning about fighting and grappling techniques. She rarely sleeps indoors, and spends some time as the local animals.

Finally, she knows it's time. She thanks the monastery for their hospitality, takes some water and food, and prepares her journey back to Absalom. Who knows what she will see along the way...
