It is a warm summer evening. Crickets argue with the distant rumble of the sea against the cliffs of Sandpoint. It is late, as Korihor and Konghruul enter town through the North gate of the Lost Coast Road, returning from a camping trip.
The streets are empty, as the village is asleep. You pass a city watchman posted at the gate, who nods at you.
The watchman appears to have jerked himself awake right before you passed him.
"Sleepin' on the job again. Useless." Konghruul chews on an apple as he walks.
"They aren't useless. There's no army from Irrisen, or the Hold of Belkzen beating down our doors to take our riches, so what do they have to worry?"
You walk down Church street, passing the White Deer. Two life-size deer carved out of white birch stand at it's entrance.
The new cathedral dominates the square.
"The Sandpoint devil. It exists, I swear." Konghruul throws the apple core away. "It's going to prey upon someone in this village soon, I can feel it." He sneers. "But not me."
You turn down high street. The cobblestone road turn to dirt here, due to the steepness of the drive.
"We've been out to the devil's platter half-a-dozen times, Konghruul. We've never seen a goblin, let alone the devil, or it's pit. I don't think any of them exist, to tell you the truth."
"Then why does that wispy elf keep coming round? She's right useless, but Sheriff Hemlock says she's fought goblins in the Tickwood."
"I don't know. I think it's all just rubbish. All those stories my...mother told me growing up. The Sandpoint devil appears when there is a shipwreck, obey your mother or you'll become an attic whisperer, a man from Riddleport will never speak the truth." She sighs, and kicks a stone in the road. "I'm just tired of it."
With a resounding boom, the wooden wall to your right explodes outward, a figure hurtling towards you.
Konghruul yells, unsheathing his dagger.
"Aroden's might!" Korihor unsheathes her dagger as well.
Demon stands. "You'll have to do better than that." He charges his assailant.
"What the bloody..." Drawing his dagger from his wrist sheath, Konghruul jogs closer to the fight.
"Konghruul! Wait!" With a curse, Korihor follows, her palm glowing white.
A warforged burts out of the hole in the wall. It's wooden frame glitters with woven in metal. Burns into the wood make a tattoo across it's plating. It carries a heavy battleaxe.
"Little forged, I will use you for tooth-picks."
"জাদু ক্ষেপণাস্ত্র." As soon as he appears, a bright white ball of light streaks from Korihor's hand impossibly fast at the warforged.
The bright ball slams into the warforged. "Gah!" he tucks his shoulder and continues running at Demon.
Demon's elbow flies up towards the warforged's face.
Demon's metal-plated elbow slams into the wood and mithral jaw of his opponent.
The warforged slams into Demon, but Demon catches the warforged's shoulders, absorbing most of the momentum of the slam. "Brought your breather friends, did you?" hisses the burned warforged.
Demon punches the warforged in it's lower back, and spins it past him.
The warforged groans as you throw him past you, clutching his back.
Konghruul moves quickly to flank the warforged, stabbing at his exposed back.
The warforged slams the butt of his battleaxe into Konghruul's throat, startling Konghruul, but leaving him unharmed.
Korihor steps to the side, speaking the words of magic again. "জাদু ক্ষেপণাস্ত্র." Antother tiny point of white light streaks at the warforged.
The warforged slashes at Demon who leans away from the cut.
"I've heard tell that the Lord of Blades is looking for your tin hide." the warforged hisses as he swings his axe around, stepping away from the building. "Think Cutter'll be the one to take you to him."
"And I'm looking for the Queen of sighs." Demon replies, slamming his fist into the back of Cutter's axe arm as it sails by his face.
The blow knocks Cutter's hand aside.
Korihor moves close to Konghruul as he gasps for air. "জাদু ক্ষেপণাস্ত্র." For a third time her voice rings out, and a blast of light slams into Cutter. "Konghruul, are you alright?"
Cutter lunges at Korihor, as she ducks away from his axe blade. "Bleed, witch!"
Demon lunges at Cutter's back, flanking him, and kicks out at Cutter's side. "Where did you find me? Tell me, infernal creature!"
With a roar, Konghruul stabs Cutter. His blade digs deep, but doesn't seem to harm the warforged.
Korihor jumps back, blasting Cutter again. "জাদু ক্ষেপণাস্ত্র!"
