There is a line on the Battle Map. Everyone's current position is on the stairs. Anyone moving off this line must make a DC15 Strength or Escape Artist check or become Entangled. Movement beyond the second landing is treated the same.

Surprise Round

At the second landing, the webs become animated and try to entangle Leira and Kaos. But neither the nimble Rogue Arcanist, or the Dragon Disciple become ensnared.

Round One

Ettercaps move up from the dense webs below and attack the party. None were able to do damage to our brave heroes.

The animated webs move up the stairs trying, this time, to entangle Ingrahild and Ulfgard. Both the Dwarves become victims of the animated webs.

Ingrahild Fort Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Entangled: The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) or lose the spell. Entangled creatures can attempt to break free as a move action, making a Strength or Escape Artist check. The DC for this check is equal to the DC of the spell, or in this case Supernatural Ability. (DC16)

@Ulfgard - The webs are anchored. Which means Ulfgard and Ingrihild both can't move. Ulfgard could attack the third Ettercap at a -2, or attempt to break free.

Umlo slices into the second Ettercap. Then, he cleaves the strange humanoid's brain into two halves. The Ettercap goes limp within the sticky webs.

Ragnir asks Torag to Bless the party. Everyone gets a +1 Moral Bonus on Attack rolls.

Ulfgard is entangled.

Droja seeks for aid at our time of need. (She begins to cast Summon Monster III.)

Kaos drops his torch and hacks into the fourth Ettercap, nearly dropping the spidery-like man.

An actual spider moves up an attacks Leira.

Leira pulls out her Hopeknife, and slashes at the new threat. She nearly makes a critical hit on the eight-legged menace.

The spider's initiative was later in the Round. Leira's attack shifts her initiative.

Anga casting defensively sends two Scorching Rays at the first Ettercap burning the purple creature. It screeches in pain.

Ingrahild attempts to break free of the bonds, "Ick! I had ratha be cover'd in mud th'n this sticky stuff." But is unable to break free.

Ingrahild Strength Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

The Dwarf Ranger tries to break free again. This time Ingrahild frees herself from the sticky webs. (Move action first attempt. Standard action second attempt. She can take no other actions.

Ulfgard still has Round One actions.


The first and fourth Ettercaps fall back. Both of the spidery-men are in pain and suffering from their wounds.

The third Ettercap attacks Ulfgard. Its claw were ineffective, but the Ettercap bit Ulfgard.

Ulfgard took 7 points of damage less his DR, and needs to make a DC 15 Fort Save. If failed, Ulfgard would take 1d2 points of DEX damage. Poison (Ex) Bite—injury; save Fort DC 15; frequency 1/round for 10 rounds; effect 1d2 Dex; cure 2 consecutive saves. The save DC is Constitution based.

Attempting again to bottle up the front of the approaching invaders, the webs animate again around Leira and Kaos.

Leira and Kaos must again make a DC16 Fort Save or become Entangled.

The spider attacks Leira, but continues to miss the nimble Rogue Arcanist.

The rule could have been clearer, for sure. The webs are anchored to the walls of the the stairwell. I have misplayed this in times past, too. You would need to free yourself before you can move.

"Best way to fight spiders, is with spiders," three Giant Spiders appear around the creature below and attack. None of the attacks were effective, but Droja knows they will be a nuisance.

Ulfgard Argimosshes the third Ettercap. It falls limp and unconscious in the webs.

Round Two

Retcon: The third Ettercap does not bite Ulfgard.

The webs wrap again around Leira and Kaos. Leira becomes entangled.

Umlo readies an attack.

GMPC Ragnir Ragnir too readies an attack.

Ulfgard is unable to break free from the entangling webs.

Droja brings forth three Giant Spiders of her own. The appear next to the creature below and attack. The attacks miss, but they will be a nuisance to the creature.

Kaos casts Burning Hands. The flames kills the third Ettercap and frees a region from webs.

The spider tries to bite Leira, but the Rogue Arcanist is too timble for the slower moving arachnid.

Leira returns with a Hopeknife bite of her own, slicing into the eight-legged menace.

With the third Ettercap toast, Anga changes her target with her Magic Missiles targetting the big spider on Leira. The big Spider becomes limp and motionless.

Ingrahild tries to break free from the webs, but is unsuccessful.

Seeing other spiders appear and attack their master, the remaining Ettercaps go after the spiders.

The first Ettercap moves and goes after the third new Giant Spider, but does not taste spider goo.

If you have the Entangled condition, and you want to move, you will need to roll the Escape Artist or Strength check for your move action. Also, every step below the second landing is thick with webs. You would need to cut through them to move, which is a regular attack roll.

Droja recognizes enough that the creature below is a humanoid. The Oracle tries to put a hold on this creature's efforts. Droja cast Hold Person against the strange humanoid. But this creature has incredible will power and resists the affects of the spell.

Strange Creature's Will Save: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26

Droja's spiders continues to be a nuisance and little else.

You can either cut through the webs or burn the webs. Cutting throught the webs takes one round per five foot section. Burning the webs does create the risk of the fire spreading and hurting members of the party.

If Entangled you remain Entangled until you can free yourself. The rule states that it takes a Strength or Escape Artist check to be freed from the bonds. But I see no reason you can't cut your way out too, as Ulfgard has done. The web rules are a mess at best. You can still attack if Entangled with the -2 attack penalties noted above.

Round Three

The first Ettercap moves and attacks the newly appearing threat. It misses its attack.

The fourth Ettercap moves and attacks the first of Droja's spiders. It damages the new spider, but not enough to send it back from whence it came.

It is still difficult for the party to make out details to the mysterious humanoid through the thick mass of webs. This humanoind was unable to do too much harm to the second of Droja's spiders.

Umlo advances down the steep and treacherous stairs as far as he can at this time.

Ragnir asks for and recieves a Spiritual Waraxe. It slices into the first Ettercap. The first Ettercap falls unconscious into the thick webs.

Unable to simply break throught the tangled webs, Ulfgard draws out his Hopeknife and cuts through the webs, freeing himself from the sticky threads.

I would think that Agrimmosh may not be the best tool for cutting through strands of webs.

Droja cast Hold Person on the strange humanoid. But the creature easily resists its effect. Droja's spiders continues to be a nuisance.

Kaos moves in front of Leira and cuts through the next section of webs.

Taking your CMB roll as an attack, it would have cut through this section of webs along the steep staircase.

The big spider remains unconscious.

Leira switches to her trusty bow.

Leira can still take a standard action in Round Three.

Anga can see enough of the strange humanid to hit it with a Magic Missile.

Ingrahild is unable to advance or do much else at this time.

Haskyll misses the last Ettercap with his blob of acid.

The last Ettercap continues to defend its master. The first of Droja's spiders returns to the plane it came from. The last Ettercap takes a step through the webs like solid ground, and goes after the second of Droja's spiders.

Round Three

Leira fires an arrow at the strange humanoid. Her arrow gets caught up in the webs.

Round Four

The fourth Ettercap sends Droja's first spiders back to the plane whence it came.

The Mistress of the Ettercaps entangles Kaos as webs animate around the Dragon Disciple.

Umlo hesitates and looks for an opportuity to advance.

Ragnir sends his Spiritual Waraxe to attack the Unique Humanoid. It missed.

Ulfgard begins to advance down the treacherous and steep web covered stairs. He sees Kaos beginning to weave a spell and holds his advance.

Droja's spiders continue their assault. They don't really do anything. But they do get in the way. Droja advances further down the stairs.

Kaos remains entangled. He takes his mind off the animated webs and sends a fan of flames out to consume the webs.

The flames engulf around the big human. The fan also catches the 2nd of Droja's spiders, sending it back to its plane of origin. But at least Kaos is free of the entangling webs.

Burning Web Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4
Burning Hands Damage: 5d4 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 2, 4) = 17

Kaos takes 4 points of damage. The Burning Hands fans out one more square in each direction at the 15' section. When Kaos cast the previous Burning Hands I did not catch this. Since all the enemies are dead in that area, there is no need to retcon the action. Also the webs above the second landing were not as thick as below, so no back damage from the flames above the second landing.

With Kaos' flames clearing a section of web below, Umlo advances further down the stairs.

Ulfgard now follows Umlo.

Inintiatives shifted for both.

Leira takes a deep breath and puts her best effort into her next arrow shot. It sails through the tangles of webs. The arrow sticks into the chest of the strange humanoid causing critical injuries to the odd part Dwarf, part Spider humanoid.

Good strike!

Anga hits the Unique Humanod with a Force Missile.

Ingrahild advances past Kaos.

Haskyll pulls out his crossbow and takes a shot. The bolt gets caught up in the thickening webs below the second landing.

The last Ettercap turns its attention toward Umlo. But none of the Ettercap's attacks touched the poorly coifed Dwarf.

The mistress of the Ettercaps bites at Umlo, but fails to strike the advancing Dwarf.

The RNG has not been kind to the GM's monsters. That is not a bad thing.

Does Ulfgard wish to jump off the stairs into the webbing? This is one of the most difficult combat maps I have ever used. I put lines along the stairs to indicate which squares are stair squares.
