The day started out routinely. Ulfgard calling out dangers in the water. Haskyll guarding Melira down in the smelly bilge. The Coxswain starts out delivering insults at Kaos, but later offers an approved grunt toward the big human. Ragnir is not catching any fish this day. But this was OK as there is plenty of leftover Drake. Anga works on preparing a savory Drake stew.
About mid afternoon Mordea calls out that they were coming up on an outpost to the left.
A broken pier rises from the gently flowing waters of the river, its pilings blackened by fire and splintered by axe. Only a few waterlogged planks remain, hanging drunkenly from twisted nails. A path leads up from the dock toward a small stone building atop a low hill nearby.
Captain Bloodtusk is concerned. Fifteen days ago, he had visited this outpost. All was well, but now the dock appears broken up. The Captain orders an all stop in the middle of the river. He weighs anchor and calls the party to the top deck. "Take the Jolly boat and row ashore. I had a shipment of weapons for this post. Something is wrong. Find out what is going on."
As the party rows toward shore, they see a bloated Orc body floating amongst the reeds.
When the party approaches the structure, they see Dire Wolves feasting on the body of dead horses.

The Dire Wolves are not aware of your presence. They are busy with their feast. You have surprise on them. If you try to move closer, you will need a Stealth check to see if they notice you. But as you can tell from the rolls above they are perceptive creatures. When either the Dire Wolves notice you or you attack, we will go into Round play. To move things along, I am going ahead and start it. Everyone still has one action in the Surprise Round.

On arriving, she grins, and starts casting a familiar spell.
She creates a ball of flame and rock in her hands, then flings it at the wolves.

I realize you are having issues viewing the map. Anga is well out of range for a Molten Orb attack in the Surprise Round. Would you like to use a different spell in the Surprise Round and save your rolls for Round One?

The first Dire Wolf whimpers from the pain and moves around to the back side of the structure, tugging at the crossbow bolt lodged in its flesh.
The second one, angry at being distracted from its meal, bounds over logs and bodies to get at the party.
The third one takes a less littered route and moves to the party's left.
That's all they can do. Party's up.

before gnashing his teeth and hammering and slamming into the wolf with ragefilled strength.

Round One
Two Dire Wolves, fierce but not too bright, attack the party. The other one moves around the structure to lick his wounds.
Kaos steps up and delivers a brutal strike on the second Dire Wolf.
Haskyll shifts to the right, one boot in the river's edge shallow water, the other on the firm sand and stabs the same second Dire Wolf with his spear.
Mordea drops her Crossbow and pulls out her shortsword. She makes a thrust at the Dire Wolf hitting only fur instead of flesh.
GMPC Ragnir. Shrug. It has been a week. Ragnir with his Dwarven Longhammer can stand in place and reach the prehistoric canine. He swings and misses. Strike One.

Anga cast a Scorching Ray at the third Dire Wolf hitting it solid with the heated spell.
Ulfgard hits the third Dire Wolf with Agrimmosh, but drops it with a punishing blow from his shield.
(Best shield strike so far. The Dire Wolf would have survived Ulfgard's double stike, but Anga's firey ray put it over what was needed to drop it.)
