Eben MacTeague |
I actually hadn't been accounting for the shield, so good to know the results are the same. Eh, from a practical point of view, being unconscious and being panicked amount to the same thing, as far as this fight goes.
Carina Viera |
Round 4: Actions
Move Action: Reload Crossbow
Standard Action: Shoot at the demon again
Rapidly running out of ideas, Carina keeps her eyes closed, reloads her crossbow and fires again.
Can't risk throwing my bombs into that crowd--I'd just end up hurting the others more than the demon.
Ranged Attack (PBS, Precise, Good Hope, Sickened): 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 2 = 13
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 48
...
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Through the haze of his rage, Tanith catches Farrukh's warning. He retreats a step and grabs the dark metaled dagger hanging from Astraden's belt.
It looks like the space to the right of Tanith isn't a squeezed space. Move to take the dagger. Standard to bless it. Swift to heal a little. If the Azatas end up healing him he'll use the swift for insight AC instead.
Fervor: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10
Dungeon Kobold |
As Tanith retreats a step, a bolt flies through the space his head had been in.
Rodrigo is up. I'll NPC him when I get home if he hasn't posted yet. Veeeery tired right now.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
There's plenty of folks around that would appreciate some CSWs. =P
Eben MacTeague |
I think calling in a load of DR ignoring laser guns lantern archons might be the best summon option. But that's just the unconscious guy's opinion. :-)
Dungeon Kobold |
Hm. Any tiebreaker votes between the two options? You have twenty minutes.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Did we determine if he could do both? Is having the azatas act, summoning new stuff, and then letting them act too cheesy? How about for an action point?
Dungeon Kobold |
I don't think that's a call I want to make for an NPCed action. I'm inclined to say no (for the same reason you can't have a mount move and then full attack yourself).
1 means healing: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Rodrigo sighs, dismisses the azatas, and conjures up the heavy artillery. "Just avert your gaze and blast that thing."
Using a Summon Monster to conjure up 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 lantern archons.
Averts: 6d100 ⇒ (16, 67, 12, 94, 1, 59) = 249 Three need to save.
Fort Saves (Augment Summoning, vs evil): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 181d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 161d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 Paralyzed for: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Two of the archons freeze up and acquire a blurry quality, drifting aimlessly in the air.
The other four open fire. Lasers fly everywhere, some rebounding dangerously off the sides of the tomb and the sarcophagus itself. Three, however, strike the demon itself.
Concealment: 1d100 ⇒ 441d100 ⇒ 541d100 ⇒ 411d100 ⇒ 21 All potential hits.
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 3 - 4 = 141d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 3 - 4 = 21d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 4 = 101d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 3 - 4 = 51d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 4 = 111d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 3 - 4 = 141d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 3 - 4 = 141d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 3 - 4 = 1 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5) = 10
ROUND 5: DEMON
Will vs. Aura of Menace: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 9 + 2 = 211d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 2 = 191d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 9 + 2 = 171d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 2 = 221d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 2 = 151d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 9 + 2 = 14
Rodrigo, Carina Target Select: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Longsword vs. Carina: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (18) + 22 = 40
Crit?: 1d20 + 22 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 22 + 4 = 32
Crit Confirmed!: 2d8 + 20 + 2d6 ⇒ (7, 7) + 20 + (1, 2) = 37
Eyebolts @ Tanith: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (4) + 24 = 281d20 + 24 ⇒ (5) + 24 = 291d20 + 24 ⇒ (11) + 24 = 35
Damage: 6d8 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 2, 3, 5) = 19
Snarling, the demon rushes forward, aiming straight for Carina. "Your chain is mighty. But, I see, only as strong..."
Farrukh and Tanith each get an AoO, against ACs 28 and 26, respectively. Assuming the AoOs don't stop the demon's advance:
The demon rushes forth and, before she can dodge the unseen enemy, swings up at her torso. One of the spikes impales Carina through the gut. She staggers. "...as its weakest links!"
Tanith continues to be hit in the chest with eyebolts.
Carina takes 37 damage (half of this goes to Tanith) and must make a Fortitude save, DC 25. Success indicates you are staggered for 1 round. Failure indicates you are staggered for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 rounds.
Tanith takes 19 damage and must make three Fortitude saves, DC 25 (he gets a +4 bonus on this save from Astraden's shield). Failing one means he's sickened for an hour. Failing two means he's panicked for 1d4 ⇒ 4 rounds. Failing three means he's unconscious for an hour.
IMPORTANT: ALL LANTERN ARCHONS ARE TEN FEET OFF THE GROUND. They are not in your way when moving, nor do they provoke AoOs for shooting.
Round 5: You are up! Tanith (and Astraden, if she keeps her eyes open) must make Fortitude saves, DC 18, or be paralyzed for 1d4 ⇒ 2 rounds by the gaze.
Rodrigo Dantares |
I can't get my outside-great-firewall-of-China internet working right now, so I can't see the map.
Seeing that shit is getting real, and that his azatas are useless against this demon, Rodrigo shifts tactics and calls on his old standbys, the lantern archons.
1d3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Action point to cast infernal healing on someone I can reach without taking an AOO if possible.
The archons begin firing upon the demon in concert.
Attacks: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 131d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 221d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 101d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 51d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 171d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 211d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 61d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 231d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 61d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 51d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Confirm crit: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 5, 6, 3, 3) = 24
Crit damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Seeing that he has been ninjad by the great DM in the sky, Rodrigo castes haste instead.
Casting haste with an AP to get all the archons and whoever else I can get. Still can't see map.
Eben MacTeague |
Also, Astraden can now move again. Consider yourself unsqueezed as long as Eben is unconscious.
...did you just give her permission to step on my face?
Astraden Limhaare |
Does the demon need to make saves vs. aura of menace? And huh, I had no idea I was still squeezed. What constitutes "medical attention" for Eben?
Fortitude (good hope): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 2 = 25
Astraden is momentarily transfixed by the demon's many stares, but she warns herself against looking, telling herself not to fall prey again. Still winded from the stomach wound, she can only muster the energy to channel Olidammara's divinity, and even that damages her connection to the god. Then, she closes her eyes.
Channel positive energy (healing): 6d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 1, 5, 2, 2) = 19 [2/9] [73/73] Excluding the demon.
Round 5: Five-foot step (no action) and channel positive energy to affect all of us (standard action). Air walk on Astraden lasts 682 rounds, magic circle against law on Tanith lasts 696 rounds, daylight on Eben's arrow lasts 697 rounds, comprehend languages lasts 756 rounds, and copycat lasts 1 round.
Dungeon Kobold |
Yes, it did. It made every single one. Protection from Law helped.
Eben feels consciousness return as healing rushes over him, lifting the overwhelming need to curl up in a ball and shut down.
Back to being terrified out of his wits.
Eben has been panicked for 1 out of 4 rounds so far, not counting this round. On the bright side, there are no longer any feet on his face.
Eben MacTeague |
Oh, yay, going from a status effect that made me completely useless to... a status effect that makes me completely useless.
Eben whimpers. And sucks his thumb.
Moment of greatness lasts 75 rounds, good hope lasts 74 rounds, cat's grace on Astraden lasts 67 rounds, mirror image lasts 66 rounds, cat's grace on me lasts 65 rounds.
Mirror image has 3 images remaining.
Carina Viera |
Fortitude Save (Vs. Stagger) (Good Hope, Moment of Greatness, Sickened): 1d20 + 8 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 4 - 2 = 11
...seriously? Come on, RNGesus. Why? Did I kick your puppy or something?
The shock of the sword going through her stomach causes Carina's eyes to open in surprise as the wind is knocked out of her.
Fortitude Save (vs. Paralysis) (Good Hope, Sickened): 1d20 + 8 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 2 - 2 = 12
AP Boost? *Last AP!*: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5 Final Result: 15.
Unfortunately, the demon's paralytic gaze promptly takes hold.
Astraden's healing doesn't do much to soothe her nerves.
Farrukh Al-Khatel |
Farrukh steps over and keeps trying to bash the demon's face into the wall.
Slash: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Damage: 1d6 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18
Bash: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32
Damage: 1d6 + 16 ⇒ (5) + 16 = 21
Bash Haste: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17
Bash Iterative: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Dungeon Kobold |
The demon resists being knocked into the wall, but does take a couple nasty cuts to the left wing.
Tanith and Rodrigo are up. Map.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
When the demon turns away to charge Carina, Tanith swipes at it powerfully with Astraden's freshly blessed dagger.
Blessed Cold Iron Dagger AoO: 1d20 + 15 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 15 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 34
Damage: 1d4 + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + (4) = 20
The big man groans when the demon's eye rays continue to hammer painfully into his hairy chest. Astraden's divine light helps ablate the damage until the shared pain from Carina's injury hits him.
Fort vs Paralysis: 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 12 + 2 + 6 + 2 = 39
Fort vs Fear: 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 12 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 4 = 41
Fort vs Fear: 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 12 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 4 = 41
Fort vs Fear: 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 12 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 4 = 41
With Carina in danger, hurt, and already in a rage, Tanith calls on his mighty patron once again and goes after the demon with his dagger in a frenzy.
Blessing for strength surge.
Primary: 1d20 + 15 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 15 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 = 39
Damage: 1d4 + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + (4) = 23
Iterative: 1d20 + 10 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 10 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 = 20
Damage: 1d4 + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + (2) = 20
Haste: 1d20 + 15 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 15 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 = 34
Damage: 1d4 + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + (1) = 18
Final Action Point!: 1d20 + 15 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 15 - 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 = 26
Damage: 1d4 + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 4 + 2 + 2 + (2) = 18
Dungeon Kobold |
Tanith slashes the demon as it moves by. Astraden's knife, once owned by Tanith's old boss, Balabar Smenk, sizzles as it strikes the Abyssal, porous flesh. A deep gash is left in its side. The demon hesitates after striking Carina, glancing back at the blade. For the first time, a look of fear enters its eyes.
Tanith lunges forward and stabs furiously. This is not his god's favored weapon, but it will do. The blade slices up the demon's wing as it turns around, then skewers the demon right in an eye in its chest.
The demon knocks aside the fourth strike, snarling. "Cruel, hard, chilly steel. Augerric sees—"
Tanith swings upward. The knife cleaves straight through the demon's arm, severing it at the shoulder. The arm hits the ground. The demon stares in stunned silence at the arm, then at Tanith.
The demon hits the ground two seconds after.
End combat.
Carina Viera |
Carina collapses to the floor, exhausted and gasping for breath in the aftermath of the demon's gruesome demise.
She turns a venomous glare on the fallen beast, gets up, and starts stomping on the corpse as viciously as she can.
She lets loose a string of words in Infernal. They're mostly invectives.
Farrukh Al-Khatel |
"Abyssal would be more appropriate, I think." Farrukh says as he opens his eyes and looks around for the Inevitable.
Carina Viera |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
Carina's language becomes more creative. This time a few words of Abyssal are sprinkled in.
Dungeon Kobold |
Carina gets a very bloody foot? boot? sandal? extremity. The demon's body releases small squeaking noises every third or fourth time she steps on it, like a child's plush animal.
Farrukh sees the kolyarut watching this with interest.
Farrukh Al-Khatel |
As Farrukh opens his eyes and looks around, he instinctively squints again and hisses in pain.
"Was it always so damn bright in here? Those torches are burning my eyes."
Through the pain, he decides to do a more thorough investigation of teh sarcophagus.
Using a Move action for EVEN MOAR Perception.
Perception: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (15) + 29 = 44
Rodrigo Dantares |
Woohoo!
"That was a close call!" Rodrigo exhales. "Anyone want some demonic lovin'?" he continues, holding up a bottle of fiend blood.
Got 6 infernal healings for whoever wants them.
Dungeon Kobold |
One of the archons flickers unhappily. "Master, I thought we talked about those."
Dungeon Kobold |
Farrukh finds no more traps or tricks on the sarcophagus or around it. Another thing he doesn't find: A lid.
After some awkward shenanigans, he manages to examine the top side of the sarcophagus. Like the bottom side, it depicts the image of a sleeping Wind Duke. This carving's hands, however, are empty, and protrude out of the top. They seem to be carved as if to hold an object.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith flicks Smenk's knife a few times to shake the demon's filth from its blade before wiping it clean. He spits on its corpse as one final insult and then gives Astraden back her dagger.
He wraps a brawny arm around Carina's shoulders as she finishes her string of extraplanar expletives. "You okay Red? I've never felt you get hit that hard before."
Dungeon Kobold |
Performing a variety of impressive maneuvers to achieve the height, Farrukh deposits the Seal in the image's hands.
The sarcophagus slowly descends to the ground. A few seconds later, the top of the sarcophagus fades away, leaving the Seal of Law suspended in the air above Icosiol's remains below.
Icosiol's body is nothing more than dust and fragments of bone, but several potent-looking items remain within his tomb:
A heavy platinum ring set with four large, pale blue sapphires and carved with the crisp runes of Law.
A curious fragment of rod. The outside surface is smooth, glassy, and dark, like obsidian. The interior, though, is studded with geode-like crystals. Carina recognizes its significance instantly. Image.
Two swords: A mithral shortsword and a mithral scimitar. The shortsword's pommel is a single huge star sapphire that glitters with electrical energy. The scimitar's hilt is set with six pale sapphires the size of grapes.
Farrukh Al-Khatel |
Farrukh is, naturally, drawn to the beautiful scimitar, and reaches his hands out to touch it...but stops himself before doing so. He eyes the Kolyarut suspiciously.
"Okay seriously, why are you watching us? You tried to kill us just for being in the temple before, but you're fine now that we've reached the inner sanctum? What gives?"
Dungeon Kobold |
A familiar mechanical voice rings out from the far end of the room, its source invisible to all but Farrukh. "I am waiting."
Farrukh Al-Khatel |
"Waiting for what?"
To the others: "Can one of you guys identify what these do?"
Dungeon Kobold |
The inevitable points first to Eben, then to Farrukh. "Both of you have interacted with the deceased snow weird. I am waiting to see what happens when you interact with the possessions of Icosiol. It will determine my reaction."
Farrukh Al-Khatel |
"I see. That's...ominous."
"But what the hell, since you're waiting so patiently..."
Farrukh calmly picks up the scimitar.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith positions himself between Carina and the inevitable but otherwise ignores the construct/outsider as he moves closer to the contents of the sarcophagus.
"Well those a couple swords. The curved one looks a lot like yours", the big man offers helpfully.
Dungeon Kobold |
Farrukh lays his hand upon the scimitar's hilt and lifts it from the sarcophagus. As he does so, he feels a momentary rush of jealousy and anger welling from within the blade. The hilt burns his hand as though white-hot.
The others feel a fraction of this—a sense of extreme unwelcomeness. It hurts just a little, and starts to hurt more. Tanith's head starts to throb with a splitting headache. Carina hears something in her pocket emitting an awful, high-pitched hum that only she can hear.
But just as quickly, the sense fades away. It is replaced with a feeling of acceptance, peace, and resolve. A ghostly blessing settles around the party with a soft sigh and feeling of contentment and support. The headache vanishes. The humming lowers to an almost imperceptible level.
Farrukh finds that the scimitar's hilt feels cool and pleasant to the touch now, as well as tremendously well-balanced. Tanith feels his mind opening slightly, awoken by the faint Auran whisperings of Zosiel's diadem.
And Carina pulls out the object emitting the hum. It is the defunct talisman of the sphere acquired from Zosiel's tomb. She senses that it has been restored to full functioning.
Tanith, the diadem is now a circlet of Wisdom +4. In addition, it functions as a circlet of persuasion, and grants you the ability to speak and understand Auran. This bonus persists as long as someone from the group is wearing it, but if it is sold or lost, Icosiol's blessing will fade away and leave it as it was before.
Astraden Limhaare |
". . . Snow weird? Didn't Eben have a . . . negative . . . reaction to that?"
Knowledge (planes) (good hope): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 2 = 28
Astraden checks out the scimitar before Farrukh picks it up, then (seeing no pyrotechnics) takes the time to cast some orisons before she more leisurely examines the rest of the items.
Scimitar Spellcraft: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 11 + 2 = 18
Take 10 on Appraise for a 23 with good hope and guidance.
Then ring, rod, short sword. 23 Appraise on all three.
Spellcraft (good hope, guidance): 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 11 + 2 + 1 = 28
Spellcraft (good hope, guidance): 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 11 + 2 + 1 = 29
Spellcraft (good hope, guidance): 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 11 + 2 + 1 = 24
"After this we should bring Robin up. Let him know we're all right."
Farrukh Al-Khatel |
Farrukh hefts the sword appreciatively.
"It's perfect."
"Well, did you see what you were hoping to?" he asks the Inevitable.
Dungeon Kobold |
"But the subject elsewhere referred to as 'Farrukh' had a positive one. I could simply slay those of you with undesirable qualities, but an analysis showed that delicate separation bore a low probability of being successful. Additionally, I...this unit determined, mathematically, that the extermination of the majority of this party based solely upon ethical placement would prove...unpalatable."
Astraden is unable to determine the qualities of anything, but they are all definitely magic items.
Astraden Limhaare |
"And you probably didn't want to get tied up and dropped in a pit again," Astraden chimes in. She's looking somewhere left of the kolyarut's shoulder.
He's still invisible right?
Dungeon Kobold |
Farrukh hefts the sword appreciatively.
"It's perfect."
"Well, did you see what you were hoping to?" he asks the Inevitable.
"As an emotionless automaton devoid of personal agency, no. However, with Icosiol's blessing, I have no particular obligation to destroy you." It gives something almost like a shrug. "And with Sionsiar's, I have no particular inclination to."
The invisible inevitable bows. "It appears that whatever is happening in this world at present, those items will be needed to help stop it. You have been found worthy of wielding them. I will honor the intent of the contract."
Carina Viera |
Carina readily fills the party in on the specifics of the rod piece and the busted talisman of the sphere.
"You okay Red? I've never felt you get hit that hard before."
"...I'm kinda shaken up, but otherwise I think I'm fine." She says, her boot now caked in demon gore. "I just felt so damn helpless--I couldn't do much of anything to help..."
Now to work on levelling myself up!
