The Waking Rune

You have been summoned to the Twisting Garden Lodge in the Thuvian city of Merab.

Whilst you wait for the Venture Captain and your fellow pathfinders, porters bring you cool water, iced lemon tea and thick, grainy Thuvian coffee.

You may dot and delete. Or feel free to post your in-character introductions and physical descriptions.

A woodland dressed elf armed with bow and scimitar wearing an antler helm walks into the local Pathfinder lodge and checks to see if he is in the right location. 'they did say the city of Merab' he mutters to himself. Once greeted by the servants and confirmed that this is indeed the place he is supposed to be at the elf introduces himself.
"I am Nithrandyl Eikrekkr, of the Silverleaf family in the Treetender Clan in Kyonin. I come from the Fireani Forest and am a nature scholar of sorts. I was told to come and report for a rather delicate mission for the Society. And who might you all be?"

He takes the iced lemon tea, grabs some herbs from his side pouch and mixes it into the tea before drinking it.

A multitude of magical items are visible, including a small stone that orbits his head. A small dagger at his belt is the only visible weapon.

He sets down his traveling gear and takes a seat. "Thank you," he says, in a voice somewhat garbled by the tusks protruding from his bottom jaw, as he accepts a cup of honeyed tea. "My name is Vordrek. You might say I'm a wizard-priest."

Greetings! I am Kramac. Looks like we've all been summoned for a mission togeter...er... Jino! Get in here! Stop causing trouble

His greeting is interrupted by gasps of surprise from outside, and after Kramac bellows, a large rhinoceros with a riding saddle gingerly works his way through the door.

This is Jino! A more noble steed you will never find!

Kramac grabs one of everything and sits down to sample them, making a face when he sips the coffee, before chugging the entire cup in one gulp.

The Waking Rune

Enora is away till Monday, but has dotted in, so we can proceed with some roleplay.

As you sip your drinks, and Kramac wrangles Jino into the Lodge, a lean sand-coloured dog trots in. The dog is followed immediately by a tattooed Garundi elf woman in desert garb.

"Aha! I hear our guests have arrived. Well, most of you at least. Enora will be joining us via teleportation before long. At the Sages' expense! Oh, what is that smell?! Hippo? Ah no, rhinoceros! Magnificent creatures, rhinos. Not really desert-dwellers though, eh? Now, does this mighty beast belong to Nithrandyl, or Kramac, I wonder? Ah, where are my manners? Venture Captain Diya Akan, at your service!"

The elf steps forwards, and you notice that her eyes are wholly white and unseeing.

"Let's get that rhino into the stables shall we? We have a separate coral for exotic beasts so as not to scare the horses. Tahonikepsu and Amenopheus are waiting for you in the Garden. I'll guide you through the maze; I mainly grew the maze myself, I do hope you enjoy it. Please tell me if the colours are agreeable. I primarily work in scent."

With that, Akan claps her hands and the Lodge's experienced animal handlers enter and assist Jino to a more comfortable space where he or she? is fed and watered.

Leading you into the labyrinthine maze of plant-life that gives the Twisting Garden Lodge its name, Diya Akan calls back over her shoulder: "Amenopheus specifically requested that I provide 'scholarly agents.' I am familiar with Enora, the halfling arcane specialist and ancient artifact enthusiast. The rest of you I know by reputation. But why don't you fill me in on your areas of expertise whilst we walk?"

Enora, a small female halfling in fine robes looks at all of you with interest. She walks through the room and quietly sais "Hello, my name is Enora. I assume we are all waiting to meet with Venture-Captain. Might be a good chance to get to know each other. I am from Rahadoum originally and am quite interested in magical phenomena - I hope to have your support in uncovering the secrets of this wonderful world. And I am quite optimistic that we will be successful!" she sais cheerfully.

The Waking Rune

The Venture Captain leads you through the fragrant, leafy maze to a courtyard. Beneath a pavilion, seated at a table, are the Diamond and Sapphire Sages.

Amenopheus (a late-middle-aged human male wearing a resplendent jeweled turban) looks over a book with a bemused smile as a blindfolded Tahonikepsu (a young Osiriani human female, with violet eyes that betray far greater age) cautiously sniffs at several metal vials bearing the marks of local alchemists. She confidently names each alchemist by the scent of the vial before adding with a smile, “The scent of blood, oil, and old books could only be our Pathfinder friends.” Amenopheus closes his book and pushes an ancient Azlanti coin over to the Diamond Sage, remarking that he should know better than to wager with dragons and that these games are merely distractions to relieve the tension of a serious situation. Tahonikepsu rises, removes her blindfold, draws forth a small metal box, and opens it to reveal an onyx gem in the cushioned interior. “Our situation is actually quite fascinating, though I agree it presents some difficulties. Each of our order’s sage jewels houses the personality and knowledge of its creator. Through field tests and research, Amenopheus has made a remarkable discovery: each of the jewels contains a second and unidentified persona. Your comrades recovered this jewel, and its former bearer knew the source of this anomaly. He can best explain the situation.”

Tahonikepsu intones a rite, and the morning light dims as the spectral image of a bronze-skinned dwarf manifests above the gem. He wears the simple garb of a warrior-monk, but his amulet bearing the ureaus over staff and scepter marks him as an advisor or guardian of the pharaohs.

“Greetings, stewards of knowledge. I am Padrym of Erekrus. I served the pharaohs of old and witnessed with sorrow the decline of a land of wonders. The Diamond Sage has asked me about a shadow within my sage jewel. I know this shadow as Aryana Tahari, an Usij necromancer who served at the court of the Pharaoh of Forgotten Plagues with me. Known to some as the Black Moon, her skill and wisdom were a dark reflection of the virtues of holy Thoth. She knew more of life and death than any living scholar of the time, and her enemies died horribly of exotic afflictions. She vanished from court for a time to her sanctuary beneath the village of Resa, set on a task the pharaoh personally assigned. I can sense her within the gemstone now, and casting back through memory, I feel her presence upon my every thought—perhaps even to my first acceptance into the order of Jeweled Sages.”

Amenopheus worriedly joins in. “The necromancer’s spirit has stirred recently. It may be that as more sages take up the sage jewels she grows in strength. The Usij are working to speed her awakening. With every passing year there is a growing chance she could seize control of us. While certain desperate measures—” Tahonikepsu frowns and Amenopheus hurriedly continues, “— may not be necessary yet, I have a plan to assemble the sage jewels in this necromancer’s sanctuary. There, in a place tied to her life, we can draw forth these fragments of her mind and safely destroy them with a ritual I have devised.”

Tahonikepsu nods excitedly. “We can safely remove this annoyance and perhaps discover some wonders this Tahari hid away. Regardless of her flaws, she seems a remarkable scholar. However, our numbers are too few to safely mount such an expedition. The Pathfinders have provided exemplary aid before; please assist us once more in preserving our legacy.”

Perhaps you know something about the Usij Cult?

Knowledge (history OR planes) DC 15:
The Usij are a scattered group of cultists who worship Ahriman and the divs. They do not function as a unified organization, and members range from maniacs seeking destruction to the wicked and power-hungry.

DC 20:
Once, the Usij were more widespread and acted openly, serving in the courts of kings and pharaohs until the Sarenite faith drove them into hiding.

DC 25:
Usij often use their div-granted knowledge and power to infiltrate the halls of power as advisors and sages, earning sufficient trust to then undermine leaders from within, all to bring about death, misery, and destruction.

DC 30:
The Sarenites sanctified the remains of the Usij cultists they slew in order to keep their spirits at rest; invoking Sarenrae in some fashion might aid a person fighting the Usij.

Perhaps you know something about the Night Plague?

Knowledge (history OR nobility) DC 20:
The Pharaoh of Forgotten Plagues unleashed a terrible disease during his war with the Jistka Imperium that ravaged the Imperium’s leadership.

DC 25:
The Usij captured a Jistkan efreeti commander, transformed him into a ghul infected with the plague, and sent him back to his homeland. The disease specifically targeted the Imperium’s royal bloodline, causing a breakdown in society from which the Imperium never recovered.

DC 30:
There were unconfirmed reports of immunities to the Night Plague, and the pharaoh commanded the Usij to craft a second, more deadly disease.

Karos:
As a result of your previous adventures, you may read the spoilers for DC 20 and 25 regarding the Night Plague without needing to make a skill check.

Don't forget to update the Discussion thread with your details, including the answers to the questions I asked about your previous adventures.

Nithrandyl nods courtly to the Sages and listens with interest as to what they have to tell the group. He then adds some insight he has gained from his missions and readings.
"As I understand it the Usij are a scattered group of people who worship Ahriman and the divs. They do not function as a unified organization, and members range from maniacs seeking destruction to the wicked and power-hungry. Once, the Usij were more widespread and even acted openly, serving in the courts of kings and pharaohs until the Sarenite faith drove them into hiding eons ago. Usij often use their div-granted knowledge and power to infiltrate the halls of power as advisors and sages, earning sufficient trust to then undermine leaders from within, all to bring about death, misery, and destruction. To use such knowledge in such a cruel fashion is unthinkable."

Amenopheus' smile fades as Enora asks about the hidden threat. He pauses, looking back to Tahonikepsu, and then answers. "It's true Enora. The spirit of each jewel offers its bearer wisdom and knowledge from the past, but a second voice whispers and drives darker impulses. A thoughtless action or response could nudge one toward more ruthless methods. So far the urges are easily quashed, but they’ve grown more insistent. We must act. My ritual is designed to draw out the malign influence from the jewels - Tahari's influence - and destroy it. We must perform the ritual in a place important to Tahari in life. That is why we will travel to her former stronghold, which we have located in the deep desert. We must leave as soon as we can. Grandmaster Torch, through disreputable means, now bears the emerald sage jewel. Torch requests the opportunity to contribute to our expedition in person and purify his jewel. He is untrustworthy, but allowing the gem to corrupt him holds its own dangers. He was an ally once; perhaps he could be again. As Pathfinders, you may know him best. Should we invite him to join our expedition?”

The infamous Grandmaster Torch, aka the Emerald Sage, wishes to join you. What do you say?

You owe the Grandmaster a debt. Perhaps if you were to help ensure that he gets a place in the expedition that might go some way to paying off your debt? You're not forced to speak for Torch though.

She had some involvement in the developing of the Night Plague. Divs often accompanied her, as they did all the Usij. However, she treated them especially cruelly, and they despised her.”

"This necromancer is the shadow in the sage jewels" adds Amenopheus. "If we wish to preserve the ancient knowledge that resides in the jewels, the necromancer's influence must be purged. Karos, Rogar, and Nithrandyl... if we go to fight a necromancer, you should all make sure you have some ammunition treated with ghost salts. It will allow your weapons to strike true if we encounter ghosts or spectres in the thrall of the necromancer. Perhaps torch can provide us with two doses. That should be enough to outfit all of our ranged fighters with enough ammunition.

"Good thinking Kramac. Please ensure Torch brings healing and ghost salt items for this mission."

I think we have healing. I don't mind burning through my wand if need be. I'd like a scroll of remove curse and remove disease; one of each is 750 gp.

Upon pondering a bit more, we are about to visit the sanctum of a necromancer with a fondness for disease. Perhaps good Mr. Torch could supply us with some antiplague as well? In case there are any lingering infections lurking in the sanctum.

I second the remove curse and remove disease. That plus two sets of ghost salts puts at 1150 gp. 7 antiplagues costs 350, putting us at exactly 1500 gp.

If the party agrees to the above plan, Kramac will go pick up an extra antiplague for himself and his companion for 100 gp. If not, he'll get 2 for each of them for 200 gp.

"I agree with Kramac on the list of supplies. I can cast Remove Disease as well if need be or I can ask the nature spirits for a different spell to cast." Nithrandyl will also pick up an anti-toxin and an anti-plague for himself as well.

"sounds like a good plan. "

Rogar wil also buy antitoxin, antiplague and a spare set if ghost salt.

"Ok, let us do it this way!" Enora nods.

with 20 ammunitions of ghost salt free, i can take 4 and each of the other two can take 8.

The Waking Rune

So, it looks like your consumables order for the Grandmaster is as follows
1 x scroll remove disease
1 x scroll remove curse
2 x ghost salt (enough for 20 ammunition)
7 x antiplague
I'll wait to see if Karos has any input before moving forward.

Whatever we haven't used up of our 1500 gp, Karos would like in adamantine bullets.

The Waking Rune

Unfortunately Karos the 1500gp is fully used by the list given. You can purchase adamantine bullets at the gunslinger rate yourself though (6.1gp per bullet). I'll go with the list above. Ghost salt, incidentally, can be applied to firearm bullets but not to paper cartridges.

Amenopheus departs to contact Torch. Tahonikepsu retrieves the Onyx Sage Jewel and Padrym's spirit returns to the jewel. "Finish your preparations and be ready to leave in two hours." she says, before following Amenopheus out of the garden.

When you are done with any last minute shopping, you return to the Lodge. In the street outside the Lodge, Tahonikepsu assumes her true form, that of a huge Time Dragon. Gasps of awe are heard from surprised onlookers. "Climb on board!" says the dragon. "I'll have us at Resa in a few hours!"

Then Amenopheus notices Jino. "Ah. Ahem, we seem to have a large problem Tahonikepsu. A large, rhino-shaped problem. However! I know a spell that will solve that problem. Venture Captain Akan, do you have within the Lodge's libraries a scroll or two of Carry Companion? It's a spell popular with Lastwall's mounted crusaders, and pathfinders of course. A simple enough spell. I am sure Kramac can cover the cost in gold or in favours."

Kramac: the Carry Companion solves this problem for you. Amenopheus can cast it, so can three members of the party. One scroll costs 150gp or 1PP; 5 copies on a scroll for 2PP. You need to own the source (Knights of the Inner Sea) to keep scrolls of this spell, but if you don't own it I'll allow the purchase of a casting of the spell from a fellow pathfinder in the Lodge for the normal fee of 60gp.

I do have that book (which I can, of course, verify in some way if you'd like. This will likely come up again, so I'll just drop the 2 pp for a scroll with 5 copies of the spell.
