Jino is a large creature, and is thus considered 10 feet tall, is he not? So his reach (and kramacs while riding him) should be sufficient to hit the horde, correct? If not, then Kramac and jino will just ready to attack when they inevitably descend.

The Waking Rune

Jino is Large, but is a quadruped so he has 5' reach. A rhino is big, but not 10 feet tall. To some extent, a creature's Space is always an abstraction. (A rhino occupies the same Space as a giant snake, or a frost giant, even though all three creatures are very different in shape and volume). Older editions would distinguish between "long" and "tall"; Pathfinder removed that as a rule, but still has creatures with long (generally quadrupedal) body shapes having less reach than bipedal creatures within the same Size category.

We'll have Kramac and Jino ready attacks, keeping the dice you've already rolled.

ETA: Life Bubble does indeed protect you against the ghasts' stench.

I was working under the assumption that, having removed the 'long' and 'tall' descriptors, all large creatures were considered to occupy a 10' x 10' x 10' space. If this is the case, Jino can reach the troop of undead even with 5' reach. I don't see an explicit statement of the vertical extent of a large creature anywhere from a quick search, so what makes sense, makes sense to use. 3.5 / Pathfinder really do a fairly poor job of making clear rules for moving in the 3rd dimension, especially for a game that has so many flying creatures past level 6 or so.

The Waking Rune

You're not wrong about 3-D combat rules being flaky, Kramac.

A second troop of ghasts emerges from the sandstorm, spilling over the low ruined wall around the monolith. As it approaches, Vordrek lets loose his fire!

red troop reflex save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

The pack spreads out temporarily, flowing like a wave of rotting flesh. Still, many ghasts are burned. But not enough to prevent the creatures rushing all around the monolith. Some stay in the air, attacking both Vordrek and Tahonikepsu, whilst some drop on top of Karos, and still more drop to claw and bite at Enora. Tahonikepsu bites at the creatures as they come in close, rending several. The stench would be sickening, were it not for your Life Bubble.

Karos, you'd get an AoO against the troop but I don't think you have a melee weapon equipped at present.

troop damage vs Karos: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
troop damage vs Vordrek: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
troop damage vs Enora: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
troop damage vs Tahonikepsu: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Karos, Vordrek, and Enora you need to make 2 Fort saves each, one vs disease and one vs paralysis.

Tahonikepsu, furious at being struck it seems, inhales deeply and then lets loose her breath weapon: a storm of electrical energy!

red troop reflex save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

The breath weapon is devastating, and the surviving remnant of the undead swarm scatter, some of them fleeing, others sinking below the sands! Troop dispersed/destroyed. Tahonikepsu was a good choice for this encounter.

Rogar is up! Enora, Karos and Vordrek need 2 Fortitude saves each.

fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 Replaced by 12+6=18 due to prescience result

fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

The Waking Rune

Enora, Prescience is not a reroll. You choose to use the Prescience number instead of rolling the die.

GM supervillan wrote:

Hi GM, that is what I did. :-) I rolled 12 as a result of my prescience on my turn. I used the 12 instead of the 7 and just indicated that with my +6 fort mod. this is an 18 result.

The Waking Rune

Let's try to use the discussion thread for rules queries. There's lots of complexity in this scenario and I'd like to avoid cluttering the gameplay thread.

damage (magic, coldiron), ic, pb, da: 1d6 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 + 1 + 4 = 15

The Waking Rune

Karos Fort saves:
fort save vs disease: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
fort save vs paralysis: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

Karos and Vordrek succumb to the chilling paralysis of the ghasts' attacks.

gm screen:
paralysis Karos: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5paralysis Vordrek: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Rogar advances through the field of the dead.

And then, a third wave of ghasts comes screaming out of the sands! They rush towards the closest living prey - the paralysed pathfinders near the monolith! Like the previous packs, these ghasts are airwalking. Some of them move upwards to attack Vordrek, others move downwards to attack Karos.

prey on the helpless, Karos: 4d6 + 16 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 4) + 16 = 31
prey on the helpless, Vordrek: 4d6 + 16 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 4) + 16 = 32

The ghasts rip and tear at the rigid, helpless pathfinders, trying to pull off limbs to devour.

Karos and Vordrek need to make new Fort saves vs paralysis.

The grasping graves try to grab hold of the pathfinders on the ground...

grasping graves vs Enora: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
grasping graves vs Karos: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
grasping graves vs Nithrandyl: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
grasping graves vs Jino: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
grasping graves vs Rogar: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Enora, Nithrandyl, Jino and Rogar are all grappled and injured. But...

Then, the monolith releases a wave of positive energy, sweeping away the grasping claws of the buried dead, and injuring both ghast troops at the same time as healing your wounds. Having released this energy, the monolith cracks down its centre and becomes inert.

positive energy: heals the living AND harms the undead!: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 3, 4) = 16

will save vs positive energy, green troop: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

The Waking Rune

Enora is more than 30 feet from the green troop, so cannot see them through the sandstorm. She could target a fireball in their direction, but knows that Kramac and Rogar are somewhere closeby and cannot be sure not to hit them.

However, the grey troop is visible and can be safely targeted without hitting any allies. (It's big, and you can burst the fireball in the air above them).

The Waking Rune

Enora aims her staff towards the heavens, and blasts the ghast troop presently trying to devour her comrades.

troop reflex vs fireball: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

Having to avoid Karos and Vordrek means that she cannot catch all of the troop, but nonetheless a number of undead drop from the sky.

The ghast troop advancing on Kramac's position swarms over him and Jino - but it goes badly for the ravenous creatures. As they sweep down into Rogar's field of view the dwarf lets loose his arrows. Jino and Kramac lay about themselves, the mighty rhino tossing aside the undead whilst Kramac slices them to ribbons. The pack is disbanded, the few survivors fleeing only to be trampled underfoot. Since both Kramac and Rogar head readied actions, I am saying that the troop does not get to do damage before it is destroyed.

The Waking Rune

"I am sorry pathfinders, there are so many of them!" Tahonikepsu is aggrieved. She tries to press forwards into the pack, but the mass of their rotting bodies prevents it. In her anger, Tahonikepsu swats at the undead, knocking many aside, but not enough.

With the return of the grasping graves, you are once more on difficult terrain and a 5' step is not possible at all (without certain spells or feats). You will need a concentration check to cast defensively, or you can withdraw (along the ground).

On the plus side, you made the save against paralysis successfully :)

Sorry Karos. You were gone three days, and I didn't notice anything about rerolls in your Bot Me instructions. I checked for a Talisman, but did not spot the Determination ability. I'm glad you're not deceased though. Everyone: please let me know if you think you are going to be away for more than a day. The last thing I want is to end up with a PC dying whilst their player is unavailable. Also, if you don't already have Bot Me instructions in your profile please add some. If he faisl the saves and succumbs to the disease he has Remove Disease memorized and will use it

if he is able to speak
Nithrandyl walks over to Enora and says "Great job knowing about the sword... Who can wield it?"

The Waking Rune

Enora your 3hp of real damage was healed by Vordrek's channel.

Nithrandyl, you saved against the disease but got paralysed. The paralysis wears off after several rounds though. You then diagnose that Enora, Karos and Vordrek have contracted Ghoul Fever.

Ghoul Fever details:
Ghoul Fever (Supernatural disease): Bite—injury; save Fort DC 18 (in this case); onset 1 day; frequency 1/day; effect 1d3 Con and 1d3 Dex; cure 2 consecutive saves. Death from Ghoul Fever results in rising as a Ghoul (or Ghast, depending on hit dice). So whilst several of you are infected, no effects occur until the onset time has elapsed (whereupon a new save is allowed: success counts as one of the 2 consecutive successes needed to recover, failure results in Con and Dex damage).

ETA: I neglected to account for your False Life Nithrandyl. You took 7 damage, and so have 6 temp hp remaining.

The Waking Rune

As you recover from your battle, the other Sages return.

"You were reckless Torch!" complains Dhiara. "That manoeuvre nearly saw you sucked into the maelstrom."

"Hey, I'm still here aren't I? I bought Amenopheus the time he needed to get his spell off. Teamwork, right?"

"I found it quite... invigorating." adds Sinuhotep.

"Come, come. We must get out of this sandstorm. The resonance of the Sage Jewels brought these ruins up out of the sand, let us focus their energies now." Amenopheus directs the Sages to study their jewels. Tahonikepsu nods towards you before resuming human form, and joining the other Sages in the exercise.

After a couple of minutes Tahonikepsu faces you again. "There are multiple entrances into what we believe to be Aryana Tahari's former sanctum. We must find an appropriate place to conduct our ritual."

"This whole place is structurally unsafe." says Amenopheus. "The sunken ruins have risen to the surface at the beckoning of the assembled Jewels, but with so many millennia passing since they were occupied we cannot expect that the structures will be stable. I estimate that we have a maximum of six hours before the passing of the ages undoes the Jewels' work and the ruins collapse; and we should assume four hours to be on the safe side."

"We should split into two teams, to increase our chances of finding a suitable site for the ritual." Tahonikepsu decides. "One of us will accompany the Pathfinders."

Party status

Enora: ghoul fever
Kramac + Jino
Rogar
Karos: 38hp damage; ghoul fever
Nithrandyl: 6 temp hp remaining
Vordrek: 50hp damage; ghoul fever

Which Sage would you like to accompany you as you explore Black Moon's sanctuary? Once three of you have agreed, that will be decided.

"Impressive find, little one!" Vordrek says to Enora. "You're exact right. It's a dormant luck blade, and unfortunately there's little we can do about it now. But one of us shall be keeping it and taking it back with us.

"Also, it looks like the scrolls we brought were not out of place. I myself have contracted ghoul fever, as have you and Karos. We have some time, but left unchecked it'll kill us all and make us ghouls ourselves. I can fix you up tomorrow with the right spells." Meanwhile, he pulls out a pair of wands, touching each to himself.

I vote we bring Sinuhotep. His knowledge would serve us greatly when exploring a necromancer's sanctum. As for the disease, we can have one scroll of remove disease, and perhaps Master Torch has brought some more in his satchel, if you wish to be rid of the affliction before continuing.

As he speaks, Kramac pulls out one of the vials of anti-plague and coaxes it down Jino's throat, before quaffing his own.

Come! Let us get to work!

I'm ok with using Torch to get extra remove disease scrolls to try to cure everyone if. After that, he will drink his first antiplague, and feed one to Jino

Torch is very well prepared, and has up to 1500 gp worth of scrolls and potions of our choice available when we decide we need them (this is in addition to the items we picked beforehand

The Waking Rune

"So, who got sick?" asks Torch. "Maybe I have something here."

Torch rummages in his pack.

How many Scrolls of Remove Disease are you asking for? You have 1 already supplied. You can use more of Torch's resources, each additional Scroll costing 375gp (out of Torch's "well prepared" allowance). Three of you are infected, so shall I say two more scrolls now?

Re: votes for accompaniment, we have 1 for Dhiara and 1 for Sinohotep so far.

Do we really need the scrolls of remove disease? The effect of the disease will not affect us in this scenario, right?
