GM SirSafeway's "Water, Water, Everywhere" (Open Legend RPG)

Game Master SirSafeway

This post is incomplete, and will be added to in the future.

Campaign Premise
You lot are part of the rough-and-tumble crew of the [in]famous ship Destiny, sailing the endless seas of a world with little land. During the campaign, you will band together in search of a way to defend the world from a Great Evil™, but can you defeat it before it defeats you?

The Destiny is a ship of serendipity. It always seem to show up in the right (or wrong) place at the right (or wrong) time. The ship has no real purpose it's dedicated to, necessarily, but is instead led from port to port by its faithful captain and crew. Some days you may be hauling cargo, some days you're transporting passengers, some days you're sailing into the eye of a hurricane. One thing's for sure, it's never dull for long on the Destiny.

My Expectations:
-----------------------------

Post frequently:
I expect you to be ready to post at least once every 24 hours. Don't just interject with nonsense to fulfill your "post quota", however - try to 'push' somehow, or at least describe something like your character's demeanor or how they reacted to the last action. The main thing is that you don't leave anyone waiting more than 24 hours for your action.

You all have access to the Discord server. If you will be unable to post within 24 hours, please just let me know. I will happily bot you as best I can until you can return.

I will be prepared to check the threads at least twice a day, every day. If I will be unable to do this, I will let you know. If you feel as though I am taking too long to respond to something, please let me know on Discord.

Rolling Dice and Taking Actions:
When your characters are taking actions, especially when engaged in combat, I'd like you to format your posts as follows:

  • Start by describing what your character does, in entirely in-universe terms. Don't name any Attributes, Feats, etc in this section.
  • Next, put a spoiler containing any actual rolls, mechanics, or other out-of-universe terminology. Use the [ooc] tag for the entirety of this spoiler.
  • If it is necessary to include out-of-character comments in the body of your post, you may, but always be sure to use [ooc] tags.

I do this to ensure that the campaign can read more like a story, maintaining the flow without interrupting it every few seconds with a bunch of die rolls and numbers.

Additionally, I ask that you always roll for actions in the order in which they occur. When in doubt, roll reactions to the GM first, reactions to the players next, and then your own actions.

    Example 1
    Example 2
    Example 3

  • Passive Rolls:
Rolling dice is fun and all, but I will do my best to avoid rolling dice for the sake of rolling dice. Passive things, like Perception checks when you first walk in a room, or Learning checks to identify an enemy, will not be rolled. Rather, depending on your attribute in the score, I will tell you what things you notice or what you know about this enemy in the text describing the room/enemy/whatever. Of course, ACTIVE uses of attributes, like intentionally searching a room for a hidden lever, will still require rolls.

    Additional reading, if you're interested.

    Initiative:
You fine folks will never make initiative rolls. Instead, I will roll all initiative checks on your behalf. When combat starts up, you may post in whatever order you wish, and actions will occur in initiative order (unless that wouldn't make sense, in which case I'll just say which order things happen in).

    Fun with Formatting:
In addition to the formatting mentioned above, I ask that you always use these formatting rules, in order to keep things clear and consistent:
Format speech in bold with "quotation marks". This helps draw attention to what your character is saying, as opposed to what you're saying about what they're saying.
E.g. "I don't go to the gym. I'm just naturally like this" boasts Minmaximus
Format character thoughts with italics, with no quotation marks.
E.g. The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma, Minmaximus thinks as he stares into the distance
And remember to always use [ooc] Blue Text when you are speaking out-of-character or when adding information to dice rolls.
E.g. Minmaximus attempts to scale the castle walls. Do I even need to roll, or is it easy enough to climb without rolling?

Additionally, be sure to always use Third Person Limited and write in the Simple Present tense. No ifs, ands, or buts. It keeps everyone's posts consistent and helps it read like a story.
(In simple terms, you can hear your character's thoughts, but not others', use your character's name instead of "I", and describe your actions as "do"/"does" rather than "did")

    Have Fun:
I'm only doing this whole shebang because I want it to be a good time for all of us. If for any reason you aren't finding it fun, please let me know immediately by messaging me on Discord, and I'll do everything I can to rectify the situation. If we're not all having fun, then why are we even playing?

    System-Specific Oddities
    -----------------------------
As you may be able to tell, these boards weren't designed with Open Legend in mind. This means we'll have to do some things a little differently.

A lot of these things will involve looking at dice after they've been rolled. Whenever you are about to make a post involving dice rolls, be sure to click the "Preview" button first. When you look at the preview, you'll see that the dice rolls have been made. If you further edit your post, these dice rolls won't change - They've been decreed by the Paizo Dice Gods. As a result, you can add on further rolls without fear of losing the first ones.

For examples of all of these things, please look at my post in the Discussion thread.

    Exploding Dice:
When you see that any roll includes a die that explodes, be sure to edit that die roll to include another die of that same type. If it explodes again, include yet another die.

    Advantage/Disadvantage:
Unfortunately, there isn't really any way to do this natively on the Paizo boards. As such, I ask that you simply roll all of the dice within the same roll. This will obviously result in too high of a total, so I ask that you put the actual total after removing unneeded dice in [ooc] tags next to the roll.

    The Core Mechanic in Combat:
Normally, in an Open Legend game, when your character misses an attack, you are given a choice of how to interpret that miss. Unfortunately, PbP is too slow of a format for that back-and-forth to work well. As a result, I will simply tell you upfront all of the enemy's defenses, so that you can know when you hit or miss. Even if this makes things able to be "gamed" a little more, I feel it is a worthy sacrifice for maintaining game flow.

If you do miss an attack, I'd ask that you list the desired outcome next to your roll. I reserve the right to not go with your desired outcome, and may instead force a different outcome. If you don't list anything, I'll come up with something on my own.
