Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The statue doesn't radiate evil, neither does anything else until suddenly, he feels two moderate evil presences beside him as two jackal headed statues suddenly animate and move to attack!
Zolarus, you do spot something off with the large statue of Lamashtu. It looks hollow and you think you spot a trigger for a secret door.
As the statues come to life, Othine points toward something written in Abyssal over the statue. "Great is the daughter of Heaven who tortures infants! Her hand is a net, her embrace is death. She is cruel, raging, angry, predatory. She constantly howls like a demon-dog." Then Othine cries "LAMASHTU, Mother! Accept my sacrifice" and stabs Soran in the back! Attack Vs FF, Soran: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 for 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 damage! By sheer luck, Soran steps an inch to the left at the moment and she misses!

Ferabras |
Funny, I personally wondered about Othine's suggestion - but Ferabras never doubted her!
Ferabras strides forward, calling out, "Do not kill Othine, she is controlled by some evil force!" He then turns his attention to the nearest jackal-headed statue, swinging his blade at it powerfully!

Ferabras swings at the statue, but the statue deflects his swing with its own falchion.
Soran's stab catches Othine in the chest and she grimaces, but then smiles. "Oh I'm not charmed, Paladin. I simply saw the truth: that madness and chaos hold the true path. That freedom is a lie and the only freedom we can ever hold is service!" Othine steps five feet back and murmurs a prayer to Lamashtu. She holds aloft a terrible unholy symbol and tells Soran: "Beg, dog. Beg for my mistress's forgiveness!"
Soran Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 Soran shudders, but he seem to shrug it off, only becoming shaken for a round!
Mikail too swings his mace at the statue, but it deflects the blow!

Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Now that the violence has ceased, you are alone in the room dominated by the statue that Zolarus noticed is concealing a secret door. From deeper in the temple you can hear movement and noises, but for the moment you feel unnoticed.
Which way to go? Back the way you came or through the secret door? And what will you do with Othine?
Mikail the Nimble |
Mikail gets to his feet shakily, then with a sudden burst of emotion, he wraps his small fur covered arms around Zolarus' leg. "Thank you!! I really don't know that any of us would have survived as long as we have without your healing powers!!"
If you want, I can take those charges on my wand or split them. Thanks man!
Now healed, Mikail turns back to Othine. 'Pity.. I wish your rapier weren't so sharp, Soran!"
I really didn't mean to kill her... my bad!
Hoshiko Masaru Kodo |
"So this Othine was set against us from the start then? not turned during our time together? I never liked her anyway." Hoshiko says looking at the dead female.
Ferabras |
"It would seem that way, Hoshiko," Fera says sadly. "She must have been leading us on, knowing greater danger lay ahead and might be able to defeat us. What lies must they have told her to bring her to their dark faith? I do not believe we can succeed in our mission now, since we have failed to bring her back - but we can put an end to the cult that caused her death, and perhaps bring her body back when we are done."
Secret door! They'll never know we're coming.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Zolarus points out the trigger, and Ferabras can hit it, causing the entire statue to swing forward, revealing a small space behind it where a single medium humanoid can fit. On a small shelf is a sheet of paper, upon which is written a sermon. It's quite disgusting, extolling the virtues of Lamashtu and predicting a 'Night of First Blood' when slaves shall birth the young of Lamashtu. It's definitely graphic about this event.
The entrance from the south is covered by a heavy tapestry. The hallway beyond stretches to the West, East and South. To the West you hear heavy voices chanting hymns and prayers to Lamashtu. To the South you hear watery sounds of splashing and yips and yelps, as if from very young creatures. To the East you hear nothing.
Which way?
Mikail the Nimble |
Mikail whispers to the others, "Let me scoutt ahead and see what I can see!" He quickly vanishes from sight and moves down the hall both ways before reporting back to the team.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Chanting: Crude murals cover these cavern walls, depicting gruesome and bloody birthing rites—ritual scaring, bestial consumption of the afterbirth, and other horrific acts. A huge fire pit surrounded by charred skulls takes up the center of the cavern floor. On either side of the pit stands an iron slave cage. Opposite the pit rests a blood-spattered altar, carved from a boulder with a water-filled hollow in its face. Four gnoll cultists chant in this room. Horribly enough, both slave cages are full, one with a woman and one with a man. The man's abdomen bulges horribly.
Splashing: Dark crimson fluid fills a huge pit gouged into the floor of this high-ceilinged room. The viscous liquid bubbles slightly and produces a faint light, but does not seem to emanate heat. In the pit are... pups? They seem to be gnoll or jackal or something pups. They're watched over by a thing that looks like a jackalish gnoll.
Ferabras |
When Mikail returns from his scouting and reports what he's seen, Ferabras does not hesitate, "We must stop this ritual, and save the slaves if we can. Ready yourselves."
Hope that's okay with everyone, seems like the right thing to do.
Mikail the Nimble |
sounds good. I will want to cast haste before we move in. Will update tonight from home

Ferabras |
Assuming Mikail's stealthy reconnaissance showed us that the double doors and the secret door would both take us into the temple, can we enter through the double doors? Will work much better to fight that way than in single file coming from the secret door. I've placed my token on the map assuming this is okay - if it's not, just put me at the front of the line coming from the secret door.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Yes, definitely. Go ahead and move into the temple, the gnolls will immediately spring to their feet and draw weapons, so we'll start there! But you will have the chance to place yourselves in the temple where you want before initiative.
