Ka'narg |
Stepping into the room, Ka'narg looks at the statuary with the shields. He turns his gaze over to Jaer. "Did Roldare say we would need both the shields and the keys, or something like that? Can the shields be taken off of the statues?"
Jaer Kols |
"Something like that," Jaer says, nodding back to Ka'narg. "O'course your guess is as good as mine; but with names like Home and Family...don't seem right to leave them hangin' there, now does it?"
Giving the statue another quick once-over, Jaer drops her pack and rolls a shoulder, hoping no one expects the Halfing to lug about two oversized shields on their quest. "I'll see if I can't get 'em off, if it suits ya; unless someone's got a better idea?"
Irgal Zeth |
"Home and Family are two of the precepts that Erastil holds dear," Irgal recites, somewhat rotely. "I wouldn't be surprised if the required symbolism teaches the value of protecting these precepts, as in turn, they protect you."
Gulping, he adds, "Of course, I spent far more time in the fields than at my desk... I'll... see if I can determine the symbols."
Harken the Resister |
Harken will follow behind the nagaji guy with forked tongue but wont get too close since he is superstitious of magik..."Did you find anything useful over there" he asks from behind his shield...
GM Shady |
At the point where the group step onto the lower level, the statue suddenly starts to move. It strides forward, off its dais. At the same time, the steps that led down individually rotate 45 degrees, so that where there were steps, there are now two long slides.
The statue is moving its arms menacingly, so that the shields now appear to be weapons.
As written, the slides should have caused anyone actually on the steps to slip, but the timing issues in a PbP make that too difficult to manage. At this point, I'm assuming Jaer, Harken and Keshy are at the bottom of the slide area - if you want to move back up it will require a climb manoeuvre/check. Those moving down from the upper area to join combat will require an acrobatics check. We're now in initiative order.
Initiative
Illya: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Ka'narg: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Harken: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Irgal: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Keshy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Jaer: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Statue: 1d20 ⇒ 8
H: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
K: 1d20 ⇒ 7
J: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
So everyone except Illya and Harken is up.
Ka'narg |
Ka'narg, still distracted by the burning stench from the level above, doesn't notice until it is on late the statue begin to move. Cursing, he watches as the steps near to him turn into a slide that would send him crashing into Harken if he tried to use them.
He drops the double axe unceremoniously to the ground and reaches for the masterwork crossbow given to him by Roldare. Ka'narg loads one of his crossbow bolts into the weapon and quickly takes aim at the statue, pulling the trigger.
Attack, crossbow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 The roll might include a -4 for attacking while engaged in melee, as Jaer is in front in initiative
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3
Jaer Kols |
D:
"...Nooo..." Jaer pauses, feeling precariously small in the shadow of the towering statue as it shifts. "...They wouldn't..."
Well, whatever her thoughts as to the moving hunk of sculpture, Jaer slings a hand to her second sheath and slips out a worn dagger, looking for some manner of weakness to exploit in the statue's construction. Eventually she settles on trying to ram her short sword into the construct's knee. It's just about the only thing she can reliably reach anyway.
MWK Short Sword (Flanking): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 2 = 16
Damage (Sneak Attack): 1d4 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (6) = 7
GM Shady |
still distracted by the burning stench from the level above
Note - it's not above, it's the same level, the other side of a tunnel that went down and back up. You maybe knew that anyhow but just wanted to make sure - you're still on the first level. And I doubt the -4 is going to matter much :-)
Irgal Zeth |
"What the blazes?"
Irgal looks the statue over and at Harken, Jaer, and Keshy below. He quickly starts a chant. "Deliver the strength of many to a single champion. Deliver the strength of many to a single champion."
Casting enlarge person on Keshy.
Keshik "Keshy" Moldrok |
Oh boy. This is another part of the test right? A really scary part of the test? And why do I feel tingly? Keshik will strike out at the statue, slashing at the other knee.
attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Includes flank.
Damage: 2d4 + 7 ⇒ (3, 3) + 7 = 13
GM Shady |
Statue Attacks
on Jaer: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
on Keshy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
damage to Keshy: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Ka'narg's crossbow bolt misses the statue by well over a yard, pinging harmlessly into the wall behind, and Jaer's sword thrust only manages to graze the creature. Keshy's sweep of the scythe manages to both undercut the shields and to do real damage to the wooden surface of the brute as it thumps forward into battle.
In return, the statue swings its great tower shields, on the one hand completely missing Jaer - who jumps deftly aside - but thumping straight into Keshy with the other, wounding him badly.
J: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
K: 1d20 ⇒ 7
Statue takes 2 damage from Jaer (note damage reduction) and 13 from Keshy (Keshy - I think you are missing the +2 from enlarge person on your damage roll, let me know if so and I will adjust accordingly, the extra damage isn't enough to knock it over though). Keshy takes 10 damage.
Harken and Illya are up.
Illya-Nym |
Illya casts snowball firing a shard of ice and snow at the statue.
Ranged touch Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Fortitude save dc 15 or staggered...nevermind the trend of failed rolls continues once again
Harken the Resister |
"Now is not the time to be singing little brother....and why is the forked tongue growing bigger? Let me get close enough to strike at this statue..."
Harken moves to a clear spot to strike the statue...
if Keshy is enlarged Harken would have to move anyway
DWA: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
DMG: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Keshik "Keshy" Moldrok |
Enlarge Person takes a full-round to finish casting, so no Tokyo city crushing yet. Although, I will admit I was hoping my barbarian would be the first character of mine to have this cast on him. I guess I'll have to cheer myself up by smashing this things crap in.
GM Shady |
@Keshy: thanks, good point :-) I'll also assume you're using Power Attack unless told otherwise. NB at large size I think the scythe goes to 2d6 damage? Don't come across them that much.
Illya's snowball misses the statue, but Harken's swing hits home.
Statue takes 8 further damage for a total of 23 taken. Assuming three of you are in melee in the next round the two targets - assuming the statue still has two attacks at that point - will be selected via random rolls.
Everyone except Harken and Illya is now up.
Ka'narg |
Ka'narg growls as the bolt clatters harmlessly against the wall, reaching for a second blog and setting it into the crossbow. He takes another aim at the creature and pulls the trigger once again.
Attack, with crossbow: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Clearly crossbows aren't my friend..
Jaer Kols |
Huh. Alrighty.
As she takes a brief moment to un-jamming her short sword from the statue's joint, Jaer's eyes fly up just in time to catch Keshy take the full brunt of a shield. As the creature pushes into the motion with great success, she catches the glimpse of something...odd; a purposeful, familiarly-shaped hole against its back.
"A keyhole?!" she announces incredulously, readying her weapons for another assault. "Why the heck's this thing got a keyhole!?"
MWK Short Sword (TWF, Flanking): 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 2 = 16
Damage: 1d4 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (6) = 7
Dagger (TWF, Flanking): 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 2 = 11
Damage: 1d3 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + (2) = 4
GM Shady |
Just to set expectation, when it gets to the next round for the statue, my plan is to allocate numbers to Harken, Jaer and Keshy - 1,2,3 respectively - and roll 3d3. If all 3 come up with the same character, there'll be two attacks on that PC; if all 3 are different then the attacks will be against the first two numbers thrown; on any other result the attacks will be against the two numbers thrown over the three rolls. That assumes the statue is still standing, still has 2 attacks and is still facing 3 characters (any of which might yet change). Just saying now as I want to avoid an argument if it comes to it. @Keshy given you are enlarged and potentially using Power Attack could you please also let me know what you think your AC is when you post. Thanks.
Keshik "Keshy" Moldrok |
You'd be right, the scythe goes to 2d6. To the best of my knowledge my AC would be a 15 now, -1 to my dex bonus and -1 from size increase, but +1 nat. armor. at least, that's what I remember but the spell itself isn't mentioning the natural armor.
Gah As Keshik begins to grow in size, he recovers his footing from the assault to make a heavy over-head swing.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 5) + 9 = 20
pleasenotmepleasenotmepleasenotmepleasenotme...
Irgal Zeth |
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 5) + 9 = 20
Go-ji-ra, Go-ji-ra!
"A keyhole? Do we even have a key?"
Irgal pulls out his bow and fires.
Attack+PBS: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 = 7
Not wanting to hit the large lizard paladin, he shoots poorly.
GM Shady |
Ka'narg's bolt bounces off the statue's wooden skin, while Irgal misses completely. Jaer manages to graze it, but Keshy, with his increased stature, smashes a deep groove along its front. However it still stands.
With damage reduction, Ka'narg does 0 damage, Jaer 2 and Keshy 20, so the statue has taken 45 damage so far.
Targeting: 3d3 ⇒ (1, 2, 2) = 5
Per my earlier post, in alphabetical order (H, J, K) so this means Harken and Jaer are targeted.
Attack on Harken: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Attack on Jaer: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
The statue swings the massive shields at Harken and Jaer in turn, but doesn't manage to connect.
Harken and Illya are up.
Illya-Nym |
Let's try this again
Illya fires another blast of ice and snow.
snowball: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Keshik "Keshy" Moldrok |
Hah, really? Whatever, I loosened it.
Mostly recovered from his disoriented state, Keshik watches the statue collapse.
Yeah! Go Illya! Keshik jumps in joy, but seems to rethink doing so mid-jump, losing potential altitude, and ducking slightly upon landing.
Ka'narg |
Ka'narg watches the wooden statue collapse back onto its dais and lowers the crossbow's aim toward the ground. Satisfied that the statue will not be moving again, he removes his pack and begins to reach for a couple of spare crossbow bolts to put into closer reach for the occasion he needs to shoot again. Picking up his double axe, he makes his way gingerly down the stairs, ready to attempt to leap down them if they turn back into a ramp again.
"I am well to continue, but was there anything of use within the wooden statue?" he queries, offering to aid Harken, Jaer, and Keshy search the fallen statue.
Keshik "Keshy" Moldrok |
I uh... yep gimme a sec... Keshik breathes out raggedly. He gives out his normal slightly-too-wide smile, and stumbles over to the statue, shrinking all the way.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Ka'narg |
Narrowing his eyes, Ka'narg grumbles tersely. "Do not mistake not engaging in a crowded melee as fear, Harken. Or perhaps you'd have rathered I slide down the ramp and bowled you over so that neither of us could engage the statue."
Ka'narg |
"Perhaps you are right" Ka'narg says, a slight sigh escaping his lungs. "But I suppose until the situation we find our selves in is resolved, I would prefer to be too serious than not enough."
Jaer Kols |
"Dandy as ever," Jaer answers Irgal after a brief look over the statue, the tip of her boot bouncing off one of the creature's gargantuan shields. "Hope no one's expectin' me to carry one," she says, tone clipped as if to get their internal nitpicking under control. "Them things better be worth their weight."
For a moment she gives a second look at the strange hole in the sculpture's back, wondering what use the thing might've had for a key, before turning back to the matter at hand. "In the meantime, I can take a quick look ahead if it suits ya." And someone grabs my gear. Though she keeps that one mute given the size of their prizes. "Knowing my luck, my first aid'll do more harm than good."
Ka'narg |
Ka'narg sniffs at the air and frowns at the smell of smoke getting stronger. "The smell of smoke from the other room worries me. It has been steadily getting worse, and I fear it blocking our only exit before too long. We should check it out." he says, gathering his gear and making his way back toward the tunnel.
Keshik "Keshy" Moldrok |
Irgal looks everyone over. "How is everyone? Do you need healing?"
Keshik struggles up the stairs, keeping the smile up.
Nah, I-I'm fine. I guess it wouldn't hurt to check... check out the burn smell. I'm still not used to seeing things on fire. Smoldering, sure. But an open flame sounds bad.
3 HP, heal plz.
Movement: A; Shields: A. I'll take one.
Ka'narg |
Speaking of heals - did we pick up the bottled from Roldare's room labelled 'healing'?? I know they were mentioned, but I don't think they were actually picked up.
