One would think they'd send a non-Jagdaline informant to try and get those meddlers true-resurrected, trying to get a cease-fire with the goddess ^_^ J/k, interesting twist-

"Are you feeling ill? We can try and rest up in the control room, if you wish. As I told, I am trained in the medical arts...I could try and see if there will be any problems from the bite...I was also attacked and feel unaffected so far, so I doubt it was a very strong agent."

Seeing Andretta read the Journal, Phai half-listens to Andretta, half focuses on Andretta's finger trailing what she reads...
Ultari, hu? Could come in handy, if these captors of ours use it to write down their logs...hopefully Andretta will be able to teach me some of it...but if not, I'll remember the passage she read, and can try and piece more together, and at least gain an understanding of the written language...

A bit spaced out when Ooran speaks up, Phai snaps back to the here and now:"I would assume them to be our captors. The question is, are the Lizardmen these Jagladine, or the thing controlling them?..."

Andretta shrugged - she, clearly, had no idea what the Jagladine actually looked like. It wasn't the dog-men you'd seen below, that was for sure... but that was about the only thing that was certain. "I'm not sure we're going to learn anything else here. Time to move on?"

  • "Perhaps if we find some time, you'd be interested trying to adapt some Auttaine augmentations, Ooran. I'm not sure if anyone has ever tried to install them on a non-Auttaine, but we might be able to create some less integrated equipment for you if we find a proper lab. In the mean time, these items should come in handy. This pillbox for instance, can help us give you a check up." Vincent stood next to Ooran and activated the pillbox, checking the disease pearl.

"Hmm, I don't like the sound of these Jagdaline. Not only do they sound like they're built on conquest, but they manipulate diseases to influence the behavior of those they seek to conquer? It sounds like a whole world might be under attack and losing even, without ever knowing there's a conflict. If these Jagdaline are our captors, then they sound exceptionally dangerous. That pillbox may be even more useful than I initially thought, since we can use it to check all of use each day to make sure our minds aren't being reprogrammed by their infectious agents."

"Good thinking, Vincent. We definitely should do that." Packing up the Journal, to continue her study of "Ultari" at a later time, Phai heads towards the door: "It would seem this is all laboratoy equipment for experimentation, of little use to us at this time. I agree we should move on...shall we just continue clockwise through this floor?"
Once again, assuming position with a good look on the door, ready to fire on any creature behind it-

Just for the record: The "We should do that" was in reference to checking ourselves with the pillbox, not the idea of turning us into cyborgs... ^_^

As Ooran worked on the door, there was a thumping sound, and the main doors of the elevator blew outwards. An insectoid creature like those you'd fought before came through it... but this one was much, much larger, and it promptly scuttled around to face all of you.

  • "A gigantic version of these nasty creatures? I'll drive it back, so you can get a clean shot Phai!" Vincent called out as he raised his blade and charged forward.

Let's go ahead and try a Smite Evil on this guy. Might not work, being an insect, but Vincent doesn't know any better, and it is pretty big. Bonuses are included below, if Smite doesn't apply, please remove +3 to hit, and +2 to damage. My AC will also be 3 lower than currectly reflected in my status bar.

    Mwk Falcata (w/Power Attack): 1d20 + 6 - 1 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 6 - 1 + 3 = 25, Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 + 2 = 9

The creature let out a chittering cry and bit out at Vincent as he approached.

    AoO: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Rather fortunately for the warrior, the jaws bounced uselessly off of his metal parts, and his blow landed quite solidly against the creature (with the full power of his Smite - it seemed the creature was indeed evil). Before your eyes, you could see the injury starting to slowly heal, and it let out a screech as it bit out again.

    Bite (Vincent): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 for Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

    Poison? Fort DC 16: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

There was a definite crunching sound as the creature bit into Vincent, though the poison that squirted out splashed harmlessly against metal, and it was unable to get a good grip on him with his mandibles.

From the side, you could hear Andretta chanting quickly, just before she threw out her hands and hurled a spell at the beast. Rather unhelpfully, her spell - one of Sleep - didn't seem to do anything.

"Oh come on - is everything here immune to that!?" she cried, clearly frustrated.

Once again, Phai finds herself unable to line up a clear shot, lest she risks hitting one of her companions(so need precise shot ;)). With a sigh of frustration that echoes Andretta's cry, she tightens her grip around her glaive, takes a step behind Victor, and slices at the beast.
"The day just keeps getting better every few minutes, doesn't it!"

Swift study, 5-foot-step, attack. With my attention on the beast, I'm not certain I instantly realize something may be wrong with Ooran?

Ooran, strangely silent, continues to stare at the giant insect. A look of wonder upon his face.

Phai's blow was accurate - Vincent's was not. The creature snarled and snapped out at Phai-

    Bite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

-but failed to strike. It retreated a moment later, ducking back into the shaft and disappearing into the darkness. As it left, Ooran appeared to come back to his senses, no longer affected by whatever it was that had just happened.

A few moments later, a voice could be heard from far down the shaft.

    "Ooran! Are you all right!?"

    Ooran:
It sounds like your friend - the one that escaped the gladiatorial arena with you.

not that I would hit it -_-

Certain that the creature is not gone for good, Phai looks at her comrades:"This...thing seems dangerous...we should get into a tactically sound position. Lets head to the control chamber we found earlier and consider our options in this situation!"...following that, she will start moving there, aiming at the shaft, ready to shoot if anything appears from there.even if we don't go to the chamber, it's a better position for me than "around the corner", so not trying to force this approach, movement just makes sense regardless

Can I be suspicious if something from the Shaft is adressing Ooran right after this thing went in there? I mean, Will-Save-suspicious? Because that definitely seems fishy...and I could prove it sounds fishy with Sense Motive if needed...

Vincent took a swing as the creature scuttled away and chased after it to ensure it was truly driven back. "Does anyone have any idea what that thing was? And who's there? Is that a friend of yours Ooran?"

@Phai: No Will Save here. XD

"Any reports of my death were greatly exaggerated!" There was a brief pause. "And you mean that giant insect thing, right? I think it's some kind of experiment that got loose or something, like that time we were supposed to fight a couple of animals but some idiot forgot to secure the cage!"

    Ooran:
This matches your memories of fighting with Seddon.

Ooran glances at Vincent. "I haven't the foggiest idea what that was. Amazing though, wasn't it?"

"That voice below belongs to Seddon. I'd still be in the pits if it hadn't been for Sed. He was always a crafty one. He knew more about starships and tech than anyone I've met. We split up a few months ago. I heard he went missing. Everyone thought he was dead."

He calls down the shaft to Seddon. "There used to be two more of them nesting up here. Smaller though. Yeah, but that time we didn't get to fight them, we wound up fighting those orcs instead, remember?"

You were closest, Victor, did you catch into which direction it escaped? Upwards or downwards?"

Being very aware of the cuts and bitemarks covering her body, and the pain felt from them, Phai is reluctant to approach the shaft, but slowly comes a little closer when Ooran and Vincent all but block the Shaft's exit. Still holding her bow steady aimed at the darkness, nervously gripping both glaive and shield, she inches forward, slowly.

The creature had disappeared into the darkness of the shaft quite quickly, scuttling away before you could see which direction it went.

Seddon, meanwhile, was continuing to call from pretty far below. "I remember! There's kind of a problem with that other guy's plan... you never came down to the bottom, did you? There's some more prisoners down here, and I won't leave them alone! If you can help me get them up, though, we can all try to get out of here together! Phai sighs audibly, clearly not very happy about the situation.
That...THING is in the shaft...or moves there very fluidly. I am definitely not keen on getting surprised by that while climbing down there...all I wanted was an exit...

"Can't help it. If we find no way to escape this facilty here, and so far it does'nt look like it, they we're stuck with going back into the shaft anyway. But lets continue and first make sure we are really in a dead-end."
Phai, keeping her bow trimmed at the opening as long as possible, turns her against on the southern door again as Vincent moves up. Keeping the arrow nocked and drawn, she says only one word so not to disrupt her breath battern:Ready
Business as usual...upon the door opening, shoot any enemy behind.

Uninterrupted by giant insectoid creatures, getting the door open was a relatively straightforward matter.

This elongated, octagonal chamber holds several glass cases, each big enough to contain a large dog or halfling. A solitary workbench rests on the floor to the south with two unusual diagrams affixed to the wall above it. As you moved into the chamber, a small metallic creature scuttled out from under one of the desks and pointed at one of the cases. A bit of fire on its 'tail' flashed, blasting the case open - without even a moment's pause, the liquid inside flowed out... then started moving towards you, separating into countless tiny globules as it did so.

He kneels down to peer under the table.

"Only if you promise to keep back - I've still got my torch!" the little robot said, the flame coming out of its tail flickering a bit. "...What did you want to talk about?"

"First and foremost, why you'd think we would smash you...were there others before us? And why are you here, in this...facility?"
If he is a construct, it's unlikely he was captured the same way we were...so most likely he is 'part' of the lab crew/equipment, which makes Phai suspicious

Not really convinced the robot is to be trusted, with his first action having been unleashing...something...at them, Phai stands back with a clear line of sight to the robot.
Ready action: If he "torches" one of us or a case, it get's an arrow.

  • Vincent sheathed his sword and stowed his shield before kneeling down to get a better look at the little creature beneath the table. "We are only dangerous because we woke up in a strange place and nearly everything has tried to attack us. We're not sure where we are, we're injured, and we're trying to find a way out of wherever here is.

"BR-N3R? Is that your name? I'm Vincent, and I assure you, we don't intend to harm you, as long as you don't attack us," the auttaine said as he held out his empty, mechanical hands. "This is Ooran and Phai and that's Andretta over there in the other room. We rescued her earlier from some of the hostile species we met. Do you know what this place is, or how we can leave? How did you come to be here, and do you want to stay or would you like to get out as well? Perhaps we can help each other?"

    In case it's relevant...

"I was here to help with the research." the small robot said, remaining under the table and apparently nervous about approaching Vincent. "This place is a prison, and you were brought here for medical experimentation because something unusual was detected in samples of your blood. I don't really know what the nature of the anomaly is, but Lomrick was extremely interested in it. The only way out of here is through an interplanetary gate at the top of the prison. And honestly, I'd kind of like to leave - or at least get up top so I can assess the damage and see if we can fix this place."

  • "Do you have any idea why we were ejected from the stasis chambers down below? I would have expected that if it was done intentionally we would have been released one by one, while highly sedated. Did Lomrick have any notes here about what he was studying?

"Since I'm pretty certain none of the participants in these experiments were willing, I'm planning to give anyone I find the opportunity to escape with us. I'd be happy to have you along, as long as you don't try to interfere with our rescue attempt. You could even come with us through the gate if you don't wish to be a research assistant anymore. Do you know where the interplanetary gate leads? Also... what was that?" Vincent asked as he motioned to the sliced and scattered globules on the floor.

The robot's body twitched in a shrugging motion. "It was probably from damage. They sometimes eject people if something goes wrong, because it's usually better to have prisoners alive until the research is done. Doesn't always work, though. I don't know where the gate leads. That thing was an alchemical ooze - I think his notes are on the table there, if you want to read them."

The notes were written in Ultari, though, and quite long and dense - it would take Andretta about half an hour to read through them and properly translate. A look-through also found three useful-looking bottles in a crate under one of the other tables - one potion of spider climb and two potions of cure moderate wounds.

"Vincent, you seem very friendly with this...thing. Which just admitted that it's job here was to help experimenting on us. I don't care if it wants to tag along if that betters our chances of getting out of here, but I don't want it in my back where I cannot keep my eyes on it! It may suddenly decide to rather be loyal to this Lomrick and prevent us from escaping even at the cost of it's own way out of here-", Phai is clearly not happy about this newest addition to the party...before adressing BN-N3R again: "If you really intend to help and leave with us, give us a short overview of the floors and layout of this facility to the best of your ability!"
In other words, feel free to remove (some) black from the maps and have less work, we may not know details of rooms, but the basic layout could be something it knows about

"Very well, why don't you tag along BN-N3R. We will be heading lower for a bit to check on some other prisoners. It's a tough climb. Will you let Vincent carry you?"

BN-N3R appeared to consider this for a few moments. "Lower floors are for prisoners. Upper floor is the control area." It eventually explained. "I haven't left this floor very often, but it's pretty simple when you get down to it." Moving cautiously, the robot clambered up Vincent's arm to perch on his shoulder.

    It weighs about 20 pounds.

"Whats over there?", Phai asks as they prepare to leave the room, pointing at the last location they had not checked on this floor, "Any nasty surprises we should expect?"

who will pick up the potions? Ooran could drink one right away if he wants, but I suggest we keep the spider climb for now and see if someone will need it to climb the shaft...

  • "Don't worry, Phai, I'll keep an eye on him. Just because he worked for our captor doesn't mean he's necessarily evil by association. I prefer to give everyone a chance to make a better choice and judge them by their actions when it comes to that." Vincent points out several scars on his body and a long scratch on the inside of his bulkier arm as he smirks, "Sometimes, that decision comes back to hurt me, but I've made a few friends in the past that would have been enemies if I never gave them the chance. Besides, BR-N3R and I aren't so different, I think."

Several of the inscriptions on Vincent's arm began to glow faintly. After a moment, the images seemed to pulse, then rise out of the surface of the metal, emerging as small floating gems of various size. A few of them seemed to form a simple face, two brightly glowing amber stones for eyes, and collection of smaller duller stones for eyebrows, as the creature leaned and peaked around Vincent's head to see the other creature on his shoulder. Suddenly, the swirling stones stopped and collapsed to Vincent's arm, becoming a simple inscribed image once more.

  • "Ah, don't be alarmed. That was Axis, he's a friend from quite some time ago. He's a bit shy at first, but he's pretty curious as well, and he's helped me get out of some tough spots before. "I...may be a bit on edge...I usually judge others by their actions as well, but the only thing so far I have to go on with this robot was unleashing that ooze on us. I'm in a strange place and aside from you guys and Andretta, everything in this place has tried to kill me...I'm...afraid, I guess, is all."

Seeing Axis for the first time, Phai attempts to smile at it, as well as she manages in the current situation. "Hey there, Axis"

  • "I understand your apprehension. Especially since you haven't had a chance to meditate, you must feel especially vulnerable. I'm confident we'll make it out of here though, and hopefully we'll have a few new friends and allies to show for it."

Phai wasn't sure, but she thought she noticed the inscription on Vincent's arm contort a bit. It could have been the "eyebrows" crinkling into a smile, or maybe it was simply a trick of the light.

"Over there? Oh, that's one of the research rooms." BR-N3R (or just Burner, for a more casual form) said. "I can unlock the door, if you want."

"Researching... what, exactly?" Andretta asked cautiously.

"Mimics, I think. Lomrick was looking into ways of sneaking life forms onto other planets so they could get biological samples and bring them back for study." the little robot said proudly. "...Wasn't working too well, though, but science takes time."
