"I don't know about homunculi in general," Zaijka answers Nisany, "but apparently he can't, at least not right now. But he does want to show us something, in the telescope..." With no small sense of wonder at the intricacy of the equipment surrounding her, she moves to sit in the chair settled next to the telescope's eyepiece.

"Wonder if the little guy was involved in his maker's research. Most likely," ruminates Khardir. "Heck of a telescope. I wonder where he got the lenses. Definitely not around here."

I apologise in advance...

The telescope is a true mechanical wonder: ingenious pedals and levers integrated into the construction of the operator's chair enable the occupant to spin the telescope and chair platform a full 360 degrees to view any part of the sky, to manipulate the telescope's angle and focus, to adjust the seat's height and angle, as well as to open and close the shutters. Its only apparent demerit is the fact that the cold, hard wood-and-brass chair is quite uncomfortable to recline in.

Or perhaps it would be, if the seat did not also house a devious trap: as soon as Zaijka sits down, she is struck by a jolt of electricity running through the apparatus, a thoroughly unpleasant experience resulting in burns and painful muscle contractions. Flashes of lightning arc from the contraption across the dome above, and the air fills with the smell of ozone. Though the initial shock is mercifully brief, the seat continues to hum and throb with the promise of continued electrocution.

Lodo looks at the spectacle with delight, its wicked grin underlit by flickering energy. From the looks of it, the homunculus is trying to clumsily manoeuvre its over-sized wand towards the rest of the group. The sight would be rather humorous, if the thing was not so obviously intent on causing more mayhem.

Zaijka takes 9 electricity damage from being shocked.

We are in initiative: Khardir, Nisany and Syksy go first. Lodo is currently 15 feet off the ground above the telescope, out of melee range.

Syksy's javelin hits the homunculus in the chest, tearing a visible hole through its torso as it passes through. Yet, there is no blood, nor are there bones or organs visible through the opening: just more greyish, clay-like flesh. Lodo spins in the air, its four wings struggling to keep its rotund body airborne.

Once it comes to a stop, the homunculus levels its wand towards the group, waves it around menacingly, and... nothing happens. Lodo shakes the implement for good measure, causing a few sparks to manifest from its tip, but otherwise failing to create any appreciable magical effects—much to the creature's annoyance.

"Damned armor!"

In fury he hurls the pieces of shelving at Lodo, but they both go irritatingly wide.

GM Screen:

Zaijka begins her incantation, only to be subjected to another electric shock. Nisany rushes to her aid, reaching out with healing energies as soon as the sparks have died down. Yet, judging by the continued hum of an accumulating current, the chair-trap is building up for another jolt in the very near future.

Lodo jeers voicelessly at Bernard and Zaijka's respective misfortunes, only to be interrupted in its glee by Syksy and Vibenia's barrage. Both bolt and spear tear rough holes into its mottled flesh, which proves to be surprisingly tough and resilient, maintaining its overall cohesion even as it rapidly diminishes in mass. Though it is hard to tell if the creature is injured or in pain, it appears to be slowing down somewhat, its now-ragged wings working overtime to keep its corpulent frame aloft.

Following the onslaught of projectiles, Lodo makes a sudden dive towards the still-sizzling Zaijka, sinking its little teeth into her shoulder. This is followed by a much more floundering ascent as the creature flies up and over the main group of the party, ending up where it started on the lip above the ladder. Following this seemingly petty attack by the homunculus, Zaijka suddenly feels very light-headed, a flood of drowsiness taking the edge off her injuries...

Zaijka takes another 9 electricity damage from being shocked, and 3 physical damage plus 2 poison damage from being bitten, for a total of 14 damage. Nisany heals her in the middle for 8 hit points, stopping her from going unconscious, but Zaijka still needs to make two concentration checks (DC 20 and DC 16, respectively) to not lose her spell. She also need to make a DC 14 Fortitude save against poison, or fall asleep for 1 minute—obviously, this would also interrupt her casting.

All of you are up! Lodo is 20 feet up, and has cover from the lip it was originally sitting on.

Zaijka once again goes rigid as the electricity courses through her veins, and silently curses to herself as she waits for the energy to dissipate. That kind of magical energy in a stored mechanism should have taken at least twenty seconds to restore... The current is almost enough to make her black out, and her movements falter and pause, but then she feels a wash of warm, comforting energy and a small hand on her shoulder. She flashes a toothy, shaky smile at the gnome behind her before pushing herself up from the chair, fighting through the strong wave of sudden fatigue that threatens to overcome her. Stepping away from the (gods-forsaken, thrice-cursed) chair, she reaches into her satchel and thumbs through a stack of parchment.

Touch of good on Bernard; +1 sacred bonus on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws for 1 round. That should bring his Climb check up to 20 and his attack roll to 21.

Maps | Monsters | NPCs

Sorry, I should probably have clarified this after the last round, but there are no shelves in the room—only tables and the telescope, as described here. That's why I called out the telescope, specifically, when asked about things to climb. Even if there were shelves, I don't think Bernard would be capable of leaping up to where Lodo moved during its last turn (20 feet up and 20 feet to the west from where Bernard currently located).

You're free to re-do your actions based on this knowledge, though the they will only come to effect after the following.

GM Screen:
Lodo's Bite Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Lodo's Bite Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Lodo's HP: 12/32

Much like a rabid animal that has been driven into a corner, Lodo lashes out in mad desperation. The homunculus leaps down, braving the second barrage in a most suicidal fashion, only managing to avoid most of the damage due to its natural hardiness: Syksy's attack only scrapes its hide, and Vibenia's bolt is deflected without even piercing the skin. Fortunately, the force of the impact is enough to break the bolt's class middle section: acid seems to be affecting the creature as one would expect, corroding holes into its oddly homogenous anatomy as it is released from its glass vessel—it looks almost like dry mud, melted away by the rain.

Having survived the oncoming projectiles, Lodo dashes through the air to take another nibble at Zaijka. Nisany's newfound talents soon take away the pain, but the poison is already coursing through the half-orc's bloodstream, once again threatening to lull her into a deep slumber. The homunculus flies back up to its perch.

Zaijka takes another 2 damage and 2 poison damage, and needs to make a DC 14 Fortitude save or fall asleep. Nisany takes 5 of Zaijka's overall damage, but since the ability only redirects the hit points at the start of Nisany's next turn, it doesn't stop Zaijka from taking the damage, or protect her from the poison (which would not work if she was not actually injured). I had assumed the ability worked more like shield other, since there haven't really been situations where the timing mattered.

All of you are up!

The third barrage is almost enough to drop Lodo from the air, sending it into a wild spiral as it tries to correct its trajectory. Bernard, now positioned for a counterattack, promptly cuts the disoriented homunculus in half as it dives in for another attack. The two pieces hit the ground with a wet splattering noise: all that is left of the creature are scattered clumps of clay, a handful of black stones, and a pair of hollow ram's horns. The wand it was holding clatters to the ground nearby—it is an arrow-straight brass implement, seemingly matching the construction of the telescope.

Oh, actually... I've got an idea!

As you depart the wizard's manor, the sun is finally nearing the horizon. Though the sweltering heat of the daytime is only a distant memory, the blazing orb seems intent on making the night-time as brief a respite as possible. Waiting near the edge of the estate, accompanied by a neatly dressed servant bearing a parasol, stands Arnholde Devy. To Zaijka's eyes, he seems like an old man, even older than Hunclay: he is bent-backed and leaning on a wooden cane, with thin white hair and a short wispy beard. Despite his advanced age, he is dressed in surprisingly youthful fashions, his expensive clothes bearing an brown-and-green oak motif. The half-orc recalls seeing the same heraldic device on the tabards of the town guard as she arrived earlier.

"Oh, thank Abadar you are unharmed!" wheezes Arnholde, his wiry frame wilted by the summer temperature. "I have made a discovery! While the servants were feeding the birds you brought in earlier, I was there to... well, to observe. It is extremely rare to see estrildid finches this far north, not to mention such a variety of species in one place. Quite extraordinary! Uh, a-anyway, I noticed the largest of the birds had this attached to one of their feet..."

The nobleman holds out a tiny silver charm, shaped like a clef. Only now does he notice Zaijka's rather imposing presence, immediately blushing and dropping his gaze to his feet in an oddly juvenile manner. "Oh, um... greetings. My a-apologies, I do not b-believe we are previously... acquainted."

Arnholde blinks hard at Syksy's newly coined nickname—he does not seem entirely unpleased, though he is clearly not used to such familiarity. The nobleman manages to perform something like a dignified nod in Zaijka's direction, appearing to accept Syksy's explanation without much contemplation.

Arnholde nods, smiling nervously. "Ah, yes. Hidden in plain sight, uh... a-as it were. The finches were caged in Hunclay's parlour, if I understood correctly. I do not think the servants would have thought much of the charm, e-even if they had found it. But I have been, um... personally affected the wizard's more d-dangerous possessions, and I thought it b-best to bring this to your attention. Hopefully, it is of some use to you..."

"It likely will be, thank you for bringing it." Vibenia replies with a nod. "There are only a few more things that need clearing as far as we can tell, and this could resolve one of them."

"Cool!" Syksy lets out as she watches Zaijka fiddle with the "key". "Thanks again, Arnie."

The future baron of Belhaim smiles widely, sincerely elated at having been able to help you in your quest. "I will inform my mother of your success. Please, um... do us the honour of dining with us tomorrow—i-if and when you feel like you have accomplished your task, that is!"

He is then carefully escorted back up the hill by the parasol-bearing servant, hobbling away at an agonisingly slow pace—multiple pauses the required along the five hundred feet or so between Hunclay's estate and the Devys' ancestral manor, on account of his frailty and weak constitution.

A quick dip back into the late wizard's lair proves most fruitful: with both the key-ring and the clef-shaped charm in hand, the iron bookcase and the locked chest yield their contents readily. You soon find yourselves all but buried in books, as tomes of all descriptions fill every inch of both containers: most of them are relatively mundane, dealing with astronomy and magical theory in more practical terms, while others are utterly indecipherable without in-depth knowledge of the arcane.

Appraise DC 20 (Library Lot):
There are 16 valuable tomes in the iron bookcase, 3 of which are magical. The remaining 13 are extraordinarily rare books on subjects related to astronomy (worth 100 gp each, for a total of 1,300 gp). The rest of the books in the library are all shelved on the wooden bookshelves: they number over 600, and are worth 800 gp in total.

~

Once again, to speed things up, feel free to try the following two times per attempter:

Detect Magic and Spellcraft DC 25 (Individual Book Lots):
The iron bookcase contains a normal book of extended summoning, a flesh golem manual, and a manual of war, in addition to 13 non-magical tomes. The former will almost certainly be sold as separate lots, on account of their value and specialised nature.

Read Magic (Hunclay's Spellbooks):
Inside the locked chest are Hunclay's six spellbooks. This collection of neatly catalogued tomes contains all cantrips, and a number of higher level spells: 25 1st-level, 22 2nd-level, 17 3rd-level, 13 4th-level, and 11 5th-level spells. Taken as a whole, the spellbooks are worth a whopping 19,800 gp—justifying the increased security.

The book containing Hunclay's 3rd-level spells includes secret page. A gloss in the margin on this page has four words noted, all of them crossed out save for one:

Eox
Aucturn
Carcosa
Dominion

On fire!

As the books stack up around her, Zaijka settles into the desk chair, entirely within her element. She examines and catalogues book after book, relying heavily on her magical sight and ability to translate runic writings where further secrets reveal themselves. Zev even assists in the search, flitting about from shelf to shelf and croaking out potentially noteworthy titles. It isn't until her stomach rumbles loudly that she realizes she's squinting to read in the dimming light - the sun has nearly set outside and fatigue has her almost cross-eyed. Rising from the seat (and favoring a left foot set to pins and needles by her long work), she pushes forward several small stacks of books.

"The ones from the iron case and the chest are the most valuable, unsurprisingly," she explains. "These in the left stack are exceedingly rare texts on astronomy - I remember Hunclay asking me to look for them, and how unlikely he thought it that I would succeed." She had found Esoterica Astronomica, though, she remembers as she runs a finger over the smooth leather of its spine. He'd been proud. "The three in the center are even more valuable - they are enchanted to magically assist the reader with certain tasks. And the right stack are the most valuable of all, his spellbooks. A spellcaster could learn much from examining the incantations in them; he was a man of great arcane ability. I do not expect to ever be capable of even half the spells scribed there." But it does give me a few ideas...Zev, I'll need your help later tonight.

Picking up the top spellbook again, she rifles through and turns to a page, examining a note in the margins. As she reads, Zev flits over to land on her shoulder, looking over the page intently. Then she starts to flip through the pages again, murmuring a series of four words under her breath as she pauses on each page. Eox...Aucturn...Carcosa...Dominion...

GM:

Knowledge (arcana) - Zaijka: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Knowledge (something) - Zev: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Does either of them know what the words might mean (aside from their possible connection to unlocking a secret page spell)? I the player have an idea, but that's cheating. ;) If the check doesn't fall under Arcana, Dungeoneering, Planes, Local, Religion, or Nature, Zev's check will be three lower.

For Zaijka:
You recognise both Eox and Aucturn as being planets in Golarion's solar system: sixth and eleventh from the sun, respectively. Known as the Dead Planet and the Stranger, both of them are considered ill omens in various astrological traditions. "Carcosa" does not mean anything to either of you, but something about the name makes Zev feel vaguely uncomfortable—another celestial object, perhaps? "Dominion" does not ring any bells, whatever it is.

Impressed by the sheer magnitude of the collected materials, Vibenia listens to Zaijka explain her findings.

"That's pretty incredible, the seller should be pretty happy to hear that." she says with a smile. Looking at the imposing tattooed sorceress her expression softens a bit as does her tone.

"Look I can't imagine how hard this must have been for you, he... clearly meant something to you, despite however much of his true nature he kept hidden. For what it's worth I'm sorry for the loss." she says extending a hand to grip the half orc's forearm.

"First round's on me," grins Bernard, and then turns to Zaijka.

"Listen, you really helped us in there. Thank you. As the others have said, we know this must be hard for you, learning what a monster Hunclay was... but you're here for now, and unless you have any plans, I'm sure the duchess would appreciate being able to thank you in person for your assistance. Perhaps even share some of the reward for the task. In the meantime. Would you care to come down to the local tavern, be introduced around?"

His smile is warm and friendly. "Might make things easier for you if people associate you with us, and don't go wondering what you're doing here without that context. Oh. Do you have a place to stay?"
