In the war-torn nation of Nirmathas, far from the battlefront, the sleepy little town of Phaendar is rocked by the sudden appearance of an overwhelming foe! The heroes must flee their homes, saving whatever friends and supplies they can, as the monstrous Ironfang Legion and their insidious General Azaersi begin carving out an empire of monsters from the dregs of Nirmathas and Molthune alike. The heroes must guard their band of survivors in the wilderness, challenge a troglodyte tribe for safe haven, and face the brutal bounty hunters dispatched to end their flight to freedom

Guys you're the experts not me but does this work? As currently stated, we have no dedicated front line. This looks unbalanced to me.

There's no point in planning out what level 20 looks like, if we are not robust enough to survive the journey.

We need to put some thought into optimising the team vs optimising each individual build, if we want to make this AP a success.

Ideas anyone?

Sariel Patrick Cornelius wrote:

hey Arun, JP and I have been discussing that, Sariel will be designated frontline, I will keep him a paladin, so he won't hit as hard as some people *looking at you JP*

When I made Sariel he was originally Aasimar, I've asked GM Mason If I could switch him back, to an angel-kin, if not I will go with Brunner Hammerfell, who will be a 'Stone Lord' Paladin.

Either should be a good enough frontliner to keep everything off of you squishy types...

Guys let's move this conversation to the recruitment thread from here on in. Then it's all in one place only.

So Paladin + Druid + Khaz up front, Zen Archer + Cavalier raining arrows from behind, squishy mage in the middle? Sounds good. Thanks for being flexible.

In which case, since we have two ranged damage dealers, Arun's role has to be battlefield control / utility / face skills. That works for me.

Is there anything else we're missing? I think we're capable on most things now.

Let's go!

Ok, so after looking into the Stonelord dwarven paladin archetype, I've decided to try something a little different.

Sariel, having had a pleasant conversation with Brunner, is going to hang out in Falcon's Hollow and see where things go with Laurel. While Brunner, here, having learned that Khaz Dourblade needs some assistance finding a thief, agrees to go to Phaendar with the party. Which in his words:

"'at will gezz a chance tae help th' radical gie his religion reit."

I don't often play dwarves or paladins, so I hadn't looked at it before either, JP recommended it.

Or should I say.

I'm expecting Arun to be sequestered away in a room at another tavern for most of the week, after his 'conversion' to sin magic via the charms of ReZorza. He'll be feverishly copying scrolls to his spellbook and scribing new ones. He'll emerge blinking to the light at the end of the week, a changed man, seeking his adventuring buddies to apologise for leaving them so abruptly.

Hey GM Mason, how much time will there be for crafting? Looking at craft as a background skill for flavor. But if it would be prohibitive, I may do something more functional.

I have the same question; I was intending to go that route myself at later levels. Arun (and Khaz too) has blacksmithing covered, plus arcane scrolls for when the Bloodrager can use them.

Similar question: GM have you decided whether you'll be using the Downtime rules fron Ultimate Campaign?

Brunner: I am not sure yet on the crafting. I am investigating it. As far as roleplaying. I am going to have you starting in Phaendar. You will not know anyone in the party. I've got some ideas for you, but give me a little backstory on your character. There is an NPC female dwarf smithy that I want to link you with. She is from Glimmerhold. (Glimmerhold is a small dwarven city located within the borders of the human country of Nirmathas. Situated in the Mindspin Mountains by the border with Nidal, Glimmerhold is near the banks of the Gjurn River.) ***And you may have to translate in ooc like you mentioned because I am having trouble understanding.*** ;)

Jean-Pierre: Are you keeping the same character...just a different crunch? If you are changing the character, give me some background details.

Khaz, Arun, and Fergal: I will have you starting in Falcon's Hollow. You will be guarding the merchant caravan headed to Phaendar. Some on the local NPCs will be with you.

Bahram: I'll have you starting in Phaendar. Give me a reason you would be there. Do you want to be previously in the Nirmathas army? Maybe you know one of the military NPCs? Or maybe you are just traveling through? Give me a hook.

As soon as you let me know the above, I'll get you character going in the gameplay thread. I don't want to lose momentum. I am very excited. The start to the AP is super exciting.

(Note: This PC will be fairly use-impaired in combat until level 3...)

Crud, had several paragraphs typed and my computer froze up so I am starting over. I will get Burnner’s background done as soon as I can, but for now can we go with this?

GM Mason wrote:

That’s perfect. Is it possible that he was part of a caravan that was taking or buying goods at Phaendar famous Market Festival?

Short background, I am off Wed. and Thur. I will finish full background no later than then
Brunner is of the Kraggodan Hammerfell’s famous smiths and crafters in metal and stone. While Brunner is still involved in the family business he became more involved in serving Torag and has developed a strong relationship with stone.

Using traveling for family business as an excuse, Brunner has spent many years above ground learning and helping where he can. Due to the siege of his home Brunner has stayed in the counties nearby helping dwarven communities, especially smiths where he can. He also spends much time fighting the natural enemies of dwarves: Goblinoids, Orcs and Giants, when he can.

If it doesn’t make sense to keep the two crafting skills he will change then to knowledge: geography and appraise. The biggest reason for the crafting skills is I would like to continue using dwarf weapons and have stoneplate, so the easiest way maybe to make them himself.

Since everyone is actively posting, I may try to do block initiative instead of party. I would roll everyone's initiative and then any player before the first enemy could go. For example:

Arun
JP
Brunner
Khaz
Hobgoblin Scout
Bugbear
Fergal
Worg
Bahram

Arun, JP, Brunner, & Khaz could go in any order. Fergal would have to wait on the hobgoblin and the bugbear. Bahram would have to wait on the Worg.

We will give it a try if that's ok. With all six of you (plus pets) going at once, it makes coming up with encounter challenge harder. You can wipe out an encounter quickly all going together.

That's what I'm used to to be honest. It has worked pretty well in my experience.

It also stops the temptation to meta-game, shuffling player order to min/max combats.

Should work well with this group.

Just working on my story, be up in a couple of hours

Yes, well, be careful with how much you tweak the encounters; don't count on us being *quite* as challenging as last time around... after all, Jean-Pierre certainly is (currently) a shadow of his former self...

With only a +2 to hit, and no Precise Shot, I ain't effective...

Bahram's story is done, sorry for the delay.

------------------------------
HISTORY
------------------------------

Story:

Bahram was a low ranking military commander in the Keleshite military, operating mostly autonomously with a band of approximately 100 horsemen. That is until he was summoned to an audience with the high seer in Qadira. A great threat to the nations of Golarion had been foreseen in the future and Bahram was to intervene, the signs pointed to Nirmathas and so Bahram set off, with his men in tow.

After several weeks on the road they reached the border and quickly found themselves embroiled in running skirmishes. They eventually sought supplies in a nearby town but found the place in such a state that they remained to help rebuild and defend, forming bonds with the townsfolk in the process. Time passes, Bahram receives a summons to Tamran to report and, fearing that the town would fall if the Keleshites left, Bahram elects to travel alone, leaving his horse warriors and their allies to defend the town.

Bahram finds himself in Phaendar travelling through on his way to Tamran...

10 Minute Background:

Five concept capturing points
1) Bahram is a Keleshite military commander, his troops/companions are his first priority. The only exception is where this clashes with his oaths. Bahram treats his oath/order with religious fervour, the fate of the people outweighs everything.
2) He is a big man, people are often surprised by his grace and dexterity. He is happy to not be just as he seems.
3) Bahram believes in the superiority of Keleshite culture, he speaks Keleshite whenever practical and is disdainful of what he sees as the plebeian habits of other peoples.
4) Bahram is a militaristic follower of Sarenrae, his personal belief in her redemption remit is that this is redemption of the soul, not the mortal shell. He remorselessly dispatches fallen foes.
5) He has been sent to the Molthuni front by Qadiran seers who have foreseen a great danger. In the course of the war he was summoned to Tamran and, leaving his soldiers to guard a small town they had been protecting, made his way north, passing through Phaendar on the way.

Two character goals
1) To reunite with his band of warriors on the Molthune border.
2) To learn more of the threat foretold by the seers and act to counter it.

Two secrets
1) Bahram was the only one of his warband told about the foretold threat, at a private audience just before they left Qadira many months ago. He is not forbidden to tell others what he knows but, should he talk, he will be held responsible for any outcome of that choice.
2) His orders to return to Tamran were falsified by Molthuni agents. The day after he left, a force of Molthuni militia razed the town, forcing the remnants of his force and the citizens they could rescue into hiding in the Mindspin foothills.

Dramatis Personae
1) Ahrimo Bahram’s brother. Oversees the family estates back home. The two are very close and Bahram misses his council when away from home.
2) Karakt Half-orc inquisitor of Pharasma. A priest wandering Nirmathas. Bahram and Karakt have met a number of time in the course of the war and have a mutual respect and trust. Karakt has promised to support Bahram’s men while Bahram is away.
3)Haaro Haaro is Bahram’s second in the Kelish band. There is no man that Bahram would rather fight beside, his absence is sorely felt.

Three key memories
1) The meeting in Qadira when he was given his true mission. Bahram has mixed feelings about this. He is a driven man and thrives on having a calling, but until that evening he had never hidden anything from his men. This secret, which he sees as duplicity, sits heavy on his shoulders.
2) Taking his Oath. When Bahram arrived at the Nirmathi frontlines he was staggered by the deprivation, despondency and signs of depravity he found. After but a moment of introspection he raised his voice and made his oath.
3) Leaving Haaro, Karakt and his men to journey to Tamran. This tore Bahram up, but he understood his duty to report to his superiors.

…and a fear!
1) Spiders. Bahram is an arachnophobe

CAMPAIGN COMPLETE HP (55/62) Rage (2/3) AC (18) Insight, Intimidate (+1) Perception, Survival (+2) Stonecunning (+3)Tools (Smith) Barbarian (4)

Khaz comes from Clan Dourblade, a dwarven clan of priests that reside in Janderhoff. Located on the southern end of the Mindspin Mountains. The city is known not only for its smiths, but also for its' large human population. Khaz' separatists ways came about because of his father's reluctance to deal with the human population of the city, and his insistence that Torag is a dwarven god and that humans should stick with their own. To Khaz, his prayers to heal injured humans work just as well as his prayers to heal wounded dwarves. Very loud and heated 'theological differences' between the young cleric and his father impelled him to begin his wanderings and his search to 'see the works of Torag' outside of his home.
