Tyrek hisses and his muscles suddenly swell, standing out in huge corded ridges. He charges forward with a roar.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 2 + 2 - 2 = 20 Damage: 1d12 + 4 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 2 + 3 = 18
Enter Bloodrage and charge... AC is currently 15, Str 20, Con 18.

Looks like the shadow came out and blocked the entrance before we even got into the room. Tyrek, looking at the map I don't think you can get at the creature.
knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
"It's a shadow! You need magic to hurt it! Fall back!"
Guys, I don't think we can fight the shadow in a 5'wide corridor. If you fall back and it follows us out then we can surround it.
Morthak steps back from the doorway.

![]() |

Once most of you entered the room, suddenly you spot something rising from the fire. An incorporeal creature attacks.
GM: according to your description, we should be in the actual room, not in the corridor leading to it. Is this correct?
Vivan and ticktock stay back... their job is to play doctor, not to get into combat. She holds her wand at the ready just in case though.
With her wand, Vivian is one of the few characters that can hurt an actual shadow.

![]() |

she will wait by the door, unable to actually hurt the creature
Don't you have Smite Evil?

![]() |

Since I can't get into combat - save the bloodrage.
Tyrek hisses in frustration at not being able to get to the combat and waits, swinging his axe in short, vicious blows at an imaginary foe.

Grazyra wrote:she will wait by the door, unable to actually hurt the creatureDon't you have Smite Evil?
Sadly, smite evil doesn't do squat against incorporeal... it's one of the only things it doesn't bypass.

Well then, I put everybody somewhere in the room. Since Tyrek and Karlos did not mention to enter the room, I put them at the hallway.

Vivian steps forward a bit, shooing tick tock back and holding up her wand of healing, trying to not let terror show on her face. She seems unwilling to get closer, but prepares for the inevitable rush of the creature.

BTW, GM: did you have any specific things I would have known with this knowledge check? I just assumed the basics.
Morthak steps forward with his mithral dagger, darting to one side of the shadow. He swings his dagger, trying to distract the shadow to give Asgoro a chance to attack.
Aid Another (Asgoro), -4 fighting defensively: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 6 - 4 = 12
"Okay, Asgoro, it's all yours."
Asgoro gets +4 to hit the shadow. My touch AC is currently 17.

Yes, Morthak knows something. I missed the roll, sorry!!!
Morthak knows that it's a shadow, an incorporeal undead which draws strength from living creatures. The creature resists energy channeling.
Vivian moves closer and prepares to touch the incorporeal creature with a healing wand while Morthak distracts the shadow so Asgoro gets a chance to it the shadow.
The shadow attempts to touch Morthak with its long shadowy fingers.

Str. damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Oh, man. Two points away from Paralysis. I haven't done the math but I assume I am now at a heavy load. There better be some potions of lesser restoration in here!!!
Morthak stumbles and nearly falls. He steps back several steps.
Making the withdraw action.

![]() |

Even worse, it's not paralysis, shadows kill upon draining a victim to 0!
Vivian steps back a smidge, still holding her wand out, not interested in getting any closer to the shadow.
Perhaps I can recommend we try a different route? Say, any direction at all but this one?
Still holding the readied action for if it gets close.

![]() |

If Vivian gives me the wand I could smack it for a while - as long as I manage to use it... it also burns curative magic quickly... sadly being a bloodrager doesn't help here at all!

![]() |

A weapon you have to succeed at a 20 UMD on a swing while the baddy attacks your str score is probably a bad idea. Since your not trained in it, I don't think you can use the wand at all...

![]() |

unless its part of his spell list he can use he would need to UMD, then attack with it to hit, and not get touched, if it is part of his spell list then its just attack and not get touched
Like paladins and rangers, a bloodrager isn't considered to be a spellcaster until he actually gets spells at 4th level. So he needs to use UMD even with a wand of a spell that's on the bloodrager spell list.
However, remember you can hold a charge with a touch spell. So you can activate the wand while out of reach, and then move in and touch the shadow with it your hand. You don't even need to be holding the wand anymore.
Morthak has his own wand of CLW and would be willing to pass it to Allure if she wanted to use it against the shadow. It looks like she is the only one with ranks in UMD. Allure's Painful Stare ability also looks like it will work against the shadow (for 1 extra damage per round).

![]() |

Problem is still then 1 on 1 against a shadow, and Vivian is NOT going to risk that. Vivian with withdraw with Tick Tock out into the hallway, and hope the shadow doesn't follow.

"We can come back and hit it later." Tyrek agrees. "Maybe I ssshould lead thisss time?"

![]() |

Thanks for the PM! Now everything makes sense!
Tyrek and Grzyra lead the group to a staircase. The stairs lead down and up on the other side, ending in a room.
One half of this lofty chamber has a lowered floor, with stairs on either side to reach the bottom. Standing opposite the door is a tall wooden statue of Kassen grasping a gigantic wooden shield in each hand. One of the shields is inscribed with the word "home," while the other reads "family."
The statue is a construct.

Move to stand and move to get into combat... stupid 4!
