Wow, that is rough. Hopefully you're able to recover anything you need.
Also: I forgot this guy had stoneskin. So a lot of that damage from last round got soaked up. That'll make things a little more interested then....
Sahrek takes a bite out of the giant and Gregor works his way around the arena taunting the atamahuta. Not liking Gregor's attitude, the giant turns its blade upon the inquisitor!

Yep, my mistake! Didn't see your post there, Faldoc.
Boomer is unable to bite the creature's thick hide but Faldoc's arrows break through the stony exterior of the eastern ettin and leave it bleeding severely. Some of its wounds regenerate as it tries to cast a spell from the ground.

For your final test, the Emissary assesses your mental capabilities instead of your physical prowess (uh oh), which has been well tested throughout the Ruby Phoenix Tournament. In this test, a stone pillar is placed in each corner of the fight stage. On each pillar is carve d a line from a riddle; you must read all four, place them in order, and solve the riddle to pass the test. The Emissary grants you 2 minutes to solve the riddle.
Whoever goes to read each column:
However, embedded in the words is a symbol of stunning! DC 20 Will save or stunned for 1d6 ⇒ 4 rounds.
However, embedded in the words is a symbol of fear! DC 19 Will to negate or panicked for 11 rounds.
However, embedded in the words is a symbol of confusion! DC 16 Will save or confused for 7 rounds.
However, upon reading the words a mind fog is released! DC 17 Will save or take a -10 penalty on Wisdom checks and Will saves while within 20' of the column and 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7 rounds after.
I'm not going to be too strict about timing it out round-by-round but failing some of the 'tests' will eat away at your time to share the information with others and solve the riddle obviously.

![]() |

Oops, forgot about that small detail.
Faldoc will tap the fallen inquisitor with his wand a couple of times.
CLW: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (4, 5) + 2 = 11
If that's not enough just assume I tap you again and roll.

![]() |

Gregor stumbles to his feet...looking a bit embarrassed. He considers the unconscious body of atamahuta for a moment before taking out his own healing wand; nodding a thank you to Faldoc as he does so.
CLW: 20d8 + 20 ⇒ (8, 2, 1, 8, 3, 7, 5, 5, 1, 1, 2, 2, 7, 3, 5, 4, 8, 4, 3, 8) + 20 = 107
"Might need to grab a new one of these before the day is out..."

![]() |

"Tests of mental ability, eh? Abadar help us..." Gregor casts Guidance on everyone...including himself. He will refresh it as needed.
Walking up to the first column..." And every one of me you cherish."
Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Fighting off a stunning chill he moves to column 2.
"You build more of me each day."
Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Gregor feels a shudder but manages to fend of the uneasy feeling before moving on.
"The oldest are the first to perish."
Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
Gregor starts to feel confused but then gathers his thoughts before moving on.
"But with age I slip away."
Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
With clarity of mind Gregor pieces together the puzzle.
"Alright...usually every other word in a poem rhymes. That bit about perishing seems like a good way to end it...which means that cherish should be the second line. Since 'but' is a horrible way to start a poem that must be the third line...which makes the line about building a good place to start."
You build more of me each day.
And every one of me you cherish.
But with age I slip away.
The oldest are the first to perish.
"Assuming that's the order....I have no bleeding idea what they're talking about."

![]() |

Desmond shrugs his shoulders. "Yeah, the order sounds good to me - didn't learn much 'bout poetry on the farm, but my mother would read some to us and this seems right."
Desmond mutters the lines, trying to reason out the answer. "What's something we build more of each day?"
"Memories?"
Not sure if that is right. I can only think of when my dad passed away two years ago, someone made up a photo album that says 'Cherished Memories' on the front. So, seeing the word 'cherish' in the poem triggered that for me.

The Emissary begins to clap and the crowd soon after applauds at your ability to withstand the mental strictures of the columns and still solve the riddle in time!
---
The championship round is set to take place shortly after your final test. You may make whatever preparations you want but there is a 30-second window between your last opportunity to cast preparatory spells and the start of the fight.
The roar of the crowd and the beat of a dozen large drums fill the air; the energy and excitement in the Grand Pavilion are palpable. The winner of this match will be crowned Ruby Phoenix Champion and gain access to the vaults of the legendary Hao Jin, and in so doing, become legend as well.
The hobgoblin Gomwai has thus far fought on his own and made it through the tournament on his own merit. But by some missed wording in his entry to the Tournament, he (legally) enters the arena followed by three companions. You recognize the familiar tattoos marking them as Golden League Xun assassins.
Commence prepping and we'll start the tournament match later today!

Shinkeer quietly scibbles notes in his journal, documenting his companions physical and mental prowess.

Is there time to make a quick purchase or two? I may want to nab a couple of scrolls.

Haha, did they just switch the M and the G from Mogwai? Don't get him wet!
Desmond looks the hobgoblin up and down, sizing him up. He turns to Shin. "Hey, I think Faldoc and I can take care of those three Golden League bastards pretty quickly. I'll send Sahrek in to try and trip up this Gomwai fella. You and Gregor can get in there and get a pounding in on him. Then Faldoc and I can turn our bows on to the hobgoblin."
Desmond takes a look through the potions and trinkets they've earned so far. He takes one of the potions of bear's endurance and has Sahrek drink it. He then taps Sahrek with his wand of CLW a few times.
