All of you have come to the town of Torch in the land of Numeria for reasons that are varied and sundry. Some have been in town for days, some for years, but your current situation has seen you come together for one reason: to find Khonnir Bane. The purple flame that gives Torch its name has gone out, and he mounted an expedition to find out why. He returned after a few hours with a strange metal man he found in the caves below town after a few hours, returning to the cave to find out more.

That was two days ago. More expeditions have gone, only to vanish in the same way. The town council is looking for more volunteers, and each of you have come one by one to meet with the town council's current representative, Dolga Freddert, an elderly dwarven woman still alive with energy.

Galatea runs her hands over her shirt, smoothing out any wrinkles as she waits for the council to brief them on the disappearance of her foster father. Even with her excellent memory, she struggles to remember the details that her foster father had mentioned before leaving on his expedition. He was always doing such things - it seemed so inconsequential before, really quite beyond what she needed to know. After all, who knew that it would be this expedition that he wouldn't return from.

Of course, she had wanted to go under the town days ago, but the town council dissuaded her. If Khonnir disappeared, she would have no chance on her own. A group would need to be sent - at the very least, there would be enough of a chance that one of them would come back alive with enough information for town council to make an informed decision. Logically, these summons could only mean that the town council had found enough able-bodied people to mount the rescue operation.

Looking around, however, she doesn't see anyone she doesn't recognize.

Umina strides into the Hall, taking in the sights. She sees a nearby woman just some bystander take in her strange appearance and look away swiftly.

Typical, she thinks to herself. Surprised no one's called the guard yet. That didn't go well the last time... Once she would have shrunk away, hiding her bizarre egg-yolk right eye and prominent scar from others. Now, though, she simply scoffs at the woman's reaction. She strides to the front of the room, and takes a seat.

Maybe one of her new friends will show up later?

Hitomi frowned as she hurried to catch up to her tall Kellid friend. She had heard about the town council seeking volunteers to find Khonnir Bane, and thought it would be something to do while she waited to discover more information about those whom had ambushed and killed her father. She was not at the tavern they had began to frequent, no doubt perhaps she had already made her way to the meeting hall. She hurried through the town, The exoticness of the short Tian woman had worn off enough that she almost felt.... at home there.

Hai....There you are friend Umina.

She began offering a precise quick bow making her way to the taller woman. For the moment that seemed to be the extent of her ...desire to make conversation.

Female Human (Kellid) Abyssal Bloodline Bloodrager (Rageshaper) 1

Umina turns at the familiar voice. A small smile breaks on her face.

Friend Hitomi.

She motions for Hitomi to take a seat next to hers.

Sit, friend. Who would have thought so many would turn out to this meeting?

Sandovar snuck into the meeting room almost unheeded. He displayed no particular interest in talking to anybody, though it was clear that he was more than interested in the gathered people themselves. He had known, of course, that Master Baine was a "valued member of Torch's society" - whatever that meant - but he wasn't ready for this diverse group of people gathered before the town council. Fortune hunters, perhaps?

Of course, Galeata was there... fair enough. She drew so much profit from Master Baine's attention, she might as well help bring him back. Not talking to her was not really an option, on second thought. Usually he avoided unnecessary conversations with that superstitious woman. Finding Master Baine had priority, however.

"Greetings, Galeata Earthschild. It is ... ", he struggled for words, first he wanted to say "fitting", but thought better of it, "good ... that you are also here. Hopefully, we will find Master Baine quickly. Do you know any of these other people?"

Harumi quietly looked around the room, considering her options. She was feeling slightly uncomfortable around Umina, but... "If we're going to mount another expedition, I believe it should be in as much force as possible." she mused, talking more to herself than anyone else. "I do hope we'll be able to find the others somewhere inside." That would certainly be for the best, but one could never be entirely sure when dealing with the unknown. At least she had her curse to help keep her safe.

The elderly dwarven woman Dolga Freddert comes in and take a seat quietly. "I thank you all for coming. I'm afraid it will be only me today representing the council, the others are tending their business. As you know Khonnir Baine disappeared several days ago, and the council has offered a reward for his return. The standing sum is 4000 gold pieces, and if he is found alive and well we will also kick in the scroll of resurrection we're saving in case he is...not found alive and well. If in your expedition you discover the reason for the extinguishing of the torch there is also a standing reward of another 4000 gold pieces for the ignition of the torch. Will you undertake this mission for the town of Torch?"

The slender Tian woman frowned a moment tilting her head to the side almost birdlike. She glanced to her friend Umina.

"What say you friend Umina? That is a hefty sum, perhaps a split of it would be more than enough to find leads to my fathers...

She paused and swallowed shaking her head lightly, She didnt want to think about such things.

Honorable Council-woman Freddert, I will certainly undertake this mission to find master Baine.

She began humbly bowing slightly from her waist... Her father would say she was being hasty... she hoped she wasnt being hasty.

Harumi eyed Hitomi for a few moments, then looked back towards Dolga. "That's quite a sum of money." she mused. "However, I think it's most important to focus on who we're getting back, not what the reward is." She'd had... ample opportunity to consider the problems that being selfish was brought - mortal minds just weren't meant to see the kinds of things she did. "This isn't something our town can just ignore, either. I'll do what I can to help."

Galeata nods at Sandovar before speaking. As she speaks, she pushes her white hair behind her ears, and her eyes seem to glow with a nervous energy.

"Yes, it is good that you are here as well. I worry for my father's safety." She looks at the other people gathered and says, "I do not know all of you. I am Galeata Earthschild, daughter of Khonnir Baine. We are well-met, though I wish it was under other circumstances. May our bonds grow stronger through any battles."

Galeata furrows her brow and looks at Dolga. "Councillor Dolga, thank you for your generous offer. You know that I would take on this task for no reward. However, I worry about the task ahead. I know not much about where he went, or why. Can you assist us in tracing his last known steps?"

Female Human (Kellid) Abyssal Bloodline Bloodrager (Rageshaper) 1

Umina's eyes widen at hearing the councilwoman's figure.

What I could do with that money...Upgrade my weapons, my armour...Make a steady base, even...

Umina ruminates for only a moment before standing straight up.

She shouts I, Umina of the Caves, accept your offer!

She then sits back down forcefully, leaning in to Hitomi.

She whispers, more loudly than most Won't this be interesting, friend Hitomi?

Dolga smiles lightly at everyone's acceptance of the mission. "The people of Torch will be grateful that you all have undertaken this mission. In addition to the reward, I can give each of you a writ for a flat 20% discount at the stores in town. I wish I could do more, but that will have to do."

"As to where he went, I can show you myself. Khonnir discovered some footprints going into the Weeping Pond on the day the torch went out, and there were no footprints going out anywhere around the lake. He discovered a set of submerged caves that came up into a cavern network. Khonnir reported some monstrous vermin and some kind of humanoid creatures that had the ability to blend into the shadows. He discovered a strange metal door leading deeper, and that's when he came back to report what he'd found, but then he disappeared."

"A buried metal door?" Harumi asked, her thoughts racing. That was... very interesting indeed, and a wider smile crossed her face. This could out to be something truly fascinating after all, couldn't it? Metal doors generally meant either something important or something related to the great crashed mountain... especially when they were in an unexpected place. One thing she never wanted to do was lie to herself - she was very curious about this.

At the others introductions she waited politely until there was an opening to introducing herself as well.

"I am called Hitomi Tanakai, of the Tanakai clan. It is my honor to meet you all, I hope my blade serves us all well.

Hallit: "Greetings. You speak the native tongue?"

Realized that I don't have Hallit listed as a language for Umina. Seeing as she's a native Kellid, I'll update her profile.

Switching back to Common, "I think I will prove an able companion. I am the strongest of arm, I would wager, and skilled at surviving in harsh lands. Though this one," indicating her fellow Kellid, "might surpass me in that. I have never fought alongside a land-speaker before."

Fortunately, the town's cleric of Brigh, Joram Kyte, has offered to cast a water breathing spell on any who agree to undertake the mission. It will last for six hours, hopefully long enough to get in and survey the area, and then you can always make further expeditions."

Harumi blinked a few times. "That... should be enough to bring people back if we have some who can quickly pull others." she said, thinking carefully. Swimming wasn't one of her strong points, so she'd have to take it slower than others did... but in another sense, that just meant she was more free to move around and help others.

I am Sandovar, student of Master Baine's said the young man, after having observed the exchange in silence for a while.
The sooner we depart, the better. Master Baine is powerful, but who knows what has happened and how urgently he needs assistance.

Hesitatingly, he turns towards Galaeta. Somewhat more quietly, he asks her: Did you ... did Master Baine tell any of this to you? About those monsters, I mean, and that he found that door and caves under water and all that?

For a moment, he seems much younger, very unsure of himself. It is clear what he wants to hear from Galaeta and that he fears the opposite answer.

Female Human (Kellid) Abyssal Bloodline Bloodrager (Rageshaper) 1

Umina glances at Hitomi, and then turns to the others.

"I also think we should begin as soon as possible. I need only to retrieve my weapons."

She turns to the scarred man, giving him a quick glance up and down.

She falls silent and becomes very interested in picking lint off her furs.

Dolga nods at everyone. "If you wish I can summon Joram Kyte to the Weeping Pond so that you can begin the expedition. The sooner we begin the better, I think."

Umina turns and looks down at the councilwoman.

"Yes. Time is critical for the torch," and sparing a glance at Galaeta, "and for Master Baine."

"I will go and meet you all at the Pond, then. Hitomi, could you lead the way?"

She answered setting out the door at once, as long as no one had to stop along the way she would head straight for the pond.

Harumi calmly followed the others, carefully considering her options. The most important thing was ensuring the safety of as many people as possible... and she couldn't get caught up in obsessing over any technology they might find, no matter how much she'd enjoy doing so. Ah, well. At least the Weeping Pond wasn't too far away.

The walk to the Weeping Pond from the town hall was short, and when the party arrives Dolga is already there with the town's cleric of Brigh, Joram Kyte. An older man wearing the trappings of Brigh, he nods at them solemnly. "Thank you for undertaking this mission for the town of Torch. Remember, my spell will only last for six hours, so plan to get out in time enough to return to shore. I can cast the spell every day, so don't worry if you have to make multiple forays."

He pulls a rod from a pouch on his belt, murmuring divine syllables and gesturing at the party. After a few seconds you feel rather strange for a moment, and then the feeling quickly fades.

"There you are. May Brigh watch over you as you undertake this mission."

Female Human (Kellid) Abyssal Bloodline Bloodrager (Rageshaper) 1

Umina had managed to retrieve her weapons before reaching the Weeping Pond with Hitomi's guidance. A powerful-looking hammer is strapped to her right outer thigh, while a curved battleaxe is strapped to the opposite thigh. As before, she wears her patchwork hide armor.

She listened to Dolga's speech, and practically shuddered as Kyte's magic washed over her.

"May we find the answers we need swiftly, that we will not need a second attempt," she responds sharply to the cleric.

Harsh of me, perhaps. This Kyte seems to bear no ill will...I suppose we'll just see whether his magic took as it should...

Turning to the others, "Should I or Hitomi lead? We are the most well-armored."

Standing at the Weeping Pond, Sandovar had started rummaging in his backpack, taking things out here, putting them back in there...

We can breathe water now, can we? But everything will be soaked right through one we emerge on the other side. I hope this scroll case is as watertight as that merchant told me.

Finally having finished, he nodded to himself, satisfied, before a sigh escaped his lips: My scrolls will smell of trail rations for weeks, I fear...

Hearing Umina speak, he answered almost immediately: You are welcome to go ahead, if that is what you mean. I believe with all that armour you will sink fastest in any case.

Ah, a couple of girls diving into water while surrounded by men. Sigh. Oh, well - they had people to save, dangit. With that, she simply dove into the water and began swimming forward, determined to make the most of what time they had. This wasn't an infinite-use spell, and the clock was already ticking... something she understood very well. The sooner they could find the others, the more likely it was they'd be able to save them.

Female Human (Kellid) Abyssal Bloodline Bloodrager (Rageshaper) 1

Umina considers Sandovar's words.

"Hmm. I suppose I will just have to swim well, then."

She gives Sandovar a quick glance up and down.

"If anything, I would think you may have the most trouble swimming. Or do you possess some hidden reserve of strength?"

Seeing Harumi jump into the water, Umina raises an eyebrow curiously.

"She has the right idea. I suppose we'll just have to see how well we do at swimming, then."
