"I know little of their value, but that is also not the goal of our expedition here right?"

GM BrOp |

The corridor to the north continues for about another 25 to 30 feet before turning right and descending into a long staircase going down. No other corridors or rooms branch off before this staircase.

GM BrOp |

Mach carefully creeps down the twisting staircase, descending to a level in-between the ground floor where he entered and the level he just left. As he descends, he can tell from the increasing light that there is another sunrod up ahead somewhere, and he hears the rustle of clothing and a few short whispers coming from up ahead. Whoever is making them is in quite a large room, judging by the echo.
Descending a bit lower and crouching down in the staircase to actually catch a glimpse into the room, he sees that there are at least 5 Tower Girls hidden in the shadows of the room (that he can clearly see with his darkvision, and there might be more around corners) and a single woman standing in the middle of the room flanked by two donkey rats. She is obviously waiting to greet whoever descends.
This is clearly an ambush, as a human would only be able to make out the lone woman in the middle of the room. None of the Tower Girls seem to be aware of Mach's presence, as he is still quite a ways up the staircase, which blocks most of him from sight, in addition to the staircase being in complete darkness up until the last 10 feet or so of its descent.

Standing Bear |

Are we waiting for mach to report back?

Mach Star |

Yep. Sorry to keep you waiting.
Mach creeps back to report what he's seen. "Looks like they know we're here now. One Tower Girl in the centre of the room, flanked by two rats. Probably shapeshifters. I count at least 5 more hiding in the shadows of the room--there could be more. They don't look friendly--get ready for a fight."

GM BrOp |

The major image once a day variety. I figure we can have the hidden Girls break their Stealth if we have an illusion of someone charging the lead Girl, like maybe a Shoanti warrior or something.
Not a bad idea. What do the rest of you think?

![]() |

Um'bala's eyes light up. "I've got an idea," he said, fishing out the horacalcum shard that prompted this entire mission. "I can use the Shard to create an image of Standing Bear here, charging down the stairs towards the obvious Girl. Hopefully, that will draw the fire from the other Girls, springing their trap early. We follow the illusion, maybe thirty feet behind. I'm mostly out of useful spells, but I'll be able to make someone increase in size. Probably Petronicus. Any refinements?"

Petronicus Krupt |

Petronicus nods at the wizard's suggestion. "I like the idea of being big, although that would mean I would present more of a target as well. Standing Bear, have you any healing magics? We might need them in combat."

Standing Bear |

Standing Bear let's a small smile pass over his face. "I can use the wand of needed and I have a different option to offer as well. I can commune with a certain ancestor who can send a couple of them to sleep. I would even the numbers and I prefer not to kill women if it is possible." He finishes with a shrug.

![]() |

Um'bala nods. "I doubt they'll feel the same way about you, Standing Bear, but it's a noble sentiment. Alright, give the image a few seconds to draw their attack, and follow in afterwards.[/smaller]" The wizard studies their Shoanti ally for a few moments, and palms the [I]Shard, concentrating. Shortly thereafter, an image of him in full warpaint and earthbreaker appears, and the illusion begins silently stalking down the stairs.
So, that's the plan. If I understand the spell right, if any Girls fire at the image, they get a Will save DC 17 to disbelieve. I figure we follow about forty to fifty feet behind. After that, we start improvising!

Standing Bear |

It would give Standing Bear enough time to cast a sleep spell with takes one round to cast. dc 14 will or fall asleep, trying to hit as many as possible with one spell.
Standing Bear tries to follow silently behind, his weapon at the ready, and as soon as he comes close enough closes his eyes for a moment. From his body another ancient Shoanti warrior arises, a very old man this time with many feathers in his hair that charges the indicated area and bursts apart in a cloud of smoke.

Petronicus: 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (3) - 5 = -2
Quintus: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Um’Bala: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Standing Bear: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (9) - 3 = 6
The illusion of Standing Bear carefully makes its way into the barely-lit room where the woman is sitting on the floor, petting the two donkey rats squatting next to her. Careful to make the correct sounds, the illusion casually waltzes into the room, coming to stop at the foot of the stairs.
The woman in the middle of the room stands up. "Ah, Standing Bear, I see that the intruders have freed you from your prison. Sadly, they brought you down here to die, unless you all leave the Crow immediately. This is your only warning."
Back up the stairway, the now 8 1/2 foot tall Petronicus is unsure in his footing. He stumbles on the relatively small staircase, and loudly clangs his guisarme into the wall.
The woman's eyes flash with anger. "And the rest of you can stop trying to be quiet up there" she shouts out. "[b]We have more than enough Tower Girls left to finish you all off. Leave now."
Map has been updated. Tower Girls are in shadows and can't automatically be seen unless you have darkvision.

Mach Star |

Mach sighs in resignation as Petronicus gives their position away. "If we turn back, we might trip over all the other girls we took out to get here. I'm fine with taking our chances."
He then whispers to the rest of the team. "Let's stay on the stairwell so they can't surround us."

Quintus Valdemar |

Quintus readies himself for combat though he does try to solve this diplomatically.
"Look, we just want to explore this place a bit and then leave. We don't want to really fight you and we have no reason to stop your activities here. We haven't even killed any Tower Girls here instead we just knocked them out for a bit. Do you mind letting us through?"
Diplomacy?: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23

GM BrOp |

The woman in the room makes a low chuckle, but does not seem to be in a joking bood. "My, aren't we posh little Magnamarian explorers! 'Just knocked them on their darling little pates, have we?' Leave now while you still have your lives. My rats are hungry."

Standing Bear |

Standing Bear nods to his friends and advances down the stairs to hold the position at the bottom of the stairs. He holds his weapon in both hands and stands defensively.
Full defense for now, untill the ladies come close, then they can expect a sleep spell ;)

You might have forgotten that there's already an illusion of you standing at the bottom of the stairs and talking to the Tower Girls. It was supposed to be the distraction. Does that change how you want to proceed? Otherwise I'll just roll for initiative.

Standing Bear |

I'll wait until the illusion moves forward. Is it dark enough to hide down there. I'm assuming the darkness affects the tower girls as well?
-Posted with Wayfinder

Quintus Valdemar |

"Well I'm sorry, but we can't do that. So we'll just have to knock you and your friends in the shadows down there on your darling little pates."
Quintus then looks at the others.
"Well let's hope that provokes them."

GM BrOp |

ROUND 1
INITIATIVE:
Mach: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Petronicus: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Quintus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Standing Bear: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Um’Bala: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Tower Girls: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Pack Mistress Karisa: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
You guys lucked out!
The Tower Girls seem indeed to be provoked as they begin converging upon the illusion of Standing Bear.
Initiative order will be: Petronicus, Um'Bala, and Quintus (in posting order), then the Tower Girls, then Mach and Standing Bear (in posting order), followed by Pack Mistress Karisa (the one in the middle of the room with the donkey rats).

Petronicus Krupt |

The giant Krupt moves up protectively behind the illusion of Standing Bear, muttering "Well, here goes nothing" under his breath. He holds out his guisarme threateningly.
Move action, ready attack action (with Combat Expertise) should any of them move through his threatened area.

![]() |

That's a lot of baddies.
As things devolve, Um'bala moves to a position where he can see the battlefield, but has no real target at the moment. He moves to the corner, and pulls a spell scroll from his backpack.
Move to the corner, and pull my scroll of shield. Not much else I can do right now.

GM BrOp |

That's a lot of baddies.
Yup. Remember that none of you currently see the Tower Girls that are hiding in the shadows, although, thanks to Mach, you at least know that they are there. The light source seems to be a sunrod that is lying on the ground in the "first" square of the corridor heading east.

GM BrOp |

Move to the corner, and pull my scroll of shield. Not much else I can do right now.
You would have precast that spell since it has a minute duration. Let's say you have 8 rounds left of it. You can repost your action for Round 1 accordingly.

Quintus Valdemar |

Quintus will move around to see better and then cause four dancing lights to show up around the woman in the middle having the lights act as a torch. Marked the lights on the map using the star icons.

GM BrOp |

Very cool, those will shed bright light in a 20' radius and make dim light a further 20'. Now there is no way the Tower Girls can sneak up without being detected! Also placed sun-shaped icon to represent sunrod. I will wait to see if Um'Bala wants to repost his actions before posting those of the Tower Girls.

Mach Star |

Round 1: Actions
Move Action: Sheathe short sword & dagger
Standard Action: Move behind Petronicus, drawing my shortbow as I go
Grumbling that he doesn't have a clear line of movement to get in the fray, Mach stows his weapons and draws his bow, moving up behind the enlarged Petronicus.

![]() |

I'm good with readying a telekinetic fist for when I have a good line of sight on a Tower Girl. Right now, Petronicus is in the way, and moving into the room seems like a really bad idea. I'll roll the attack and damage, and if it goes off, then we don't need to wait around for me. Additionally, I'd like illusory Standing Bear to rush forward and issue a challenge to the lead Tower Girl, drawing her and her rats forwards, and still (hopefully) drawing some fire away from the rest of us this first round.

ROUND 1 CONT.
The illusory Standing Bear proudly steps forward, proclaiming: "Among our people we have a tradition. An honorable fight between champions! Face me, rat woman, and you will test the mettle of a true Shoanti warrior!"
The Tower Girls are uncertain as to what to do and all Delay. Mach and Standing Bear are up!

Round 2: Actions
Move Action: Move behind Petronicus
Standard Action: Shoot the woman between the two rats!
Mach draws his bowstring back and lets an arrow fly at the woman in the middle of the lights!

Crit Confirm?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Crit Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7

Standing Bear moves closer in the shadows and behind the giant man whilst he starts casting a spell.
Starting with sleep, is a full round spell so can move and release next round

ROUND 1 CONT.
Mach's arrow catches the leader of the Tower Girls off-guard, digging deep into her shoulder and causing her to cry out in pain. "Treachery has revealed itself! Kill them all, girls!"
At their leader's exhortation, the Tower Girls attack, focusing their efforts on Petronicus and the illusion of Standing Bear. Tower Girls come off Delay.
TG3 steps back 5' and draws a hand crossbow and fires an arrow at the illusion. This draws an AoO from Petronicus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10,damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 1) + 6 = 8, miss; TG3 then fires the hand crossbow: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17, damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1. Having interacted with the illusion, she now gets a Will save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7, failure.
TG4 draws hand crossbow, takes 5'-step, and fires it at the illusion: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18, and gets a Will save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20, success! The Tower Girl shouts, "That Shoanti is an illusion, ignore it!"
TG1 draws hand crossbow and moves up next to her companions.
TG6 draws her hand crossbow and moves up next to one of the donkey rats to get a clear shot.
TG5 draws her hand crossbow and moves up next to her companions.
TG2 5'-steps, draws hand crossbow and fires it at Petronicus: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19, hit! Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4. This triggers Petronicus' readied attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10,damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13, miss.
TG7 draws hand crossbow and moves up to get a clear shot at Petronicus next turn.
Back in the corridor, Standing Bear begins casting his spell.
The Tower Girl leader points at the giant Petronicus, shouting "Swarm him, my lovelies." The donkey rats surge forward. The first draws an AoO from Petronicus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7,damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 = 9; they both then attempt to bite the Chelaxian: DR1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17, damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4, hit! DR2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17, hit! damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
The leader attempts to shift herself into hybrid form as a full-round action: Con check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6, failure.
ROUND 2
Petronicus, Mach, Um'Bala, and Quintus are up!

Petronicus Krupt |

Petronicus cries out in pain as the hand crossbow bolt lodges in his arm and the rats bite him. "Argh, rats, I hate rats!" He takes his hand off his guisarme and smacks at the nearest dire rodent, knocking one of them unconscious. spiked gauntlet attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20,damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6; Fort saves vs. filth fever disease from dire rats: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22, 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17, success!

Standing Bear |

I think they all still need to roll will saves but with a +4 bonus since someone else said its an illusion. sucks for them, but that's how I learnt to work with them ^^

GM BrOp |

Well, they could still not target the illusion if they were told it was one, even if they themselves still believed. Also, Petronicus is literally a bigger target.

![]() |

Fair enough. Ghost Bear did his job, anyway.
Um'bala frowned as the Girls quickly saw through the illusory Shoanti, and quickly changed tactics. He summoned a fist of telekinetic force and launched it at the remaining dire rat, hoping to clear the entry to assault the Girls.
I didn't get moved into the corner, like I requested, so move me there.
Telekinetic Fist, ranged touch, -4 cover, -4 melee: 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (8) - 5 = 3
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

GM BrOp |

Um'bala's view is blocked by the enormous Chelaxian in front of him. His magical attack happily misses Petronicus, but unfortunately also the donkey rat he'd been targeting.
Mach and Quintus are up!
