Martha nods repeatedly as Karsa speaks and casts his various spells on her, finding his sudden change of heart surprising but welcome. When he finishes, she simply says, "we will come back."

She follows the wizard sorcerer to the water's surface, where she crushes the fragment in her hand and allows its sickly green light to embed itself in her and removes her gloves to reveal a new layer of webbing between her fingers. She takes a deep breath, and submerges.

Karsa and GM:
The fighter follows Karsa, though she forces him to swim slower than his he is capable of. When the two find the scepter, it only takes a simple gesture from Karsa before Martha has both her hands on the piece of rusted metal, pulling it with all her might.

Strength + Bull's Strength: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 2 = 12 Pretty sure Heroism doesn't apply because this isn't a skill check.

Assuming 12 is not enough, Martha fails to move the scepter, not used to manipulating her strength underwater. Thinking quickly, she points at the rope Karsa is holding, then at the scepter, and makes a motion with her hands as if tying a knot.

For the GM and Martha:

Karsa winds the rope into a knot and loops it over the rod. He also casts a spell over the rod, rendering it greasy and hopefully easier to shift.

The immediate room rumbles, and the waters ripple extraordinarily.

Martha/Karsa:

12 is actually enough of a check! As such I've switch your positions assuming Martha is doing the pulling!

The altar is not trapped, per say, but it is definitely unusual that the sceptre is blended the way it is. It is likely going to cause something to occur, but definitely not a "trap". No disable-device for this part really.

As Martha removes the sceptre, the waters violently shake, you realise the portcullises are quickly descending, and new ones are starting to emerge! Black is on longer there, White is there, but since white is visually challenging to see, I will draw it in.

[ooc]As you can imagine, we will do it in combat rounds now. As you've reacted first on initiative, when you find your way back, you will have figured there is a secret door that is about to release some ugly looking humanoid creatures. Kn. Local to identify. If you want to tug the rope, i'll treat it as a move action.

Round 4

Anybody outside the water planning to do anything? Or still just wait, at this time the rope has not yet been tugged.

Normally interested in elemental immunities and resistances and special attacks if I get anthing.

Adjusting his position Karsa drops the rope so he can cast a spell and levels the strange metal rod at the creatures. He intones a spell and a ball of bright blue energy leaps forward, engulfing the alcove and crackling out from it but missing him or Martha.

5' step followed by casting empowered fire ball, substitued to electrical damage with the rod. He has both metamagic feats which reduces the spell level to 3 allowing the rod to work.

He targets the back of the secret room so, as a burst, it wont hit anyone else.

His caster level is 10 due to varisian tattoo. If they are actually immune to electricity he will do something else.

Damage: 10d6 + 10 ⇒ (1, 6, 1, 3, 1, 2, 5, 6, 4, 3) + 10 = 42 multiplied by 1.5 for 63 damage.

visibility rules still are in effect, so you would have needed to move ten feet within creature before realising. Although with enough move speed it’s reasonable to swim pass them and be back enough to target them. These are sea hags , no elemental resistance or immunities but they do have SR. I'm going to take some liberties in the narrative to keep the game going and avoid an unnecessary combat.

After taking a quick swim around the perimeter, Karsa reacts immediately to pull Martha and himself out of potential danger through the use of dimension door. Magically, they reappear wet and soaked, in the altar room. Turning back, the sorcerer quickly yells to the rest of the Pathfinders waiting along the edge of the waters. "Get out! What ye waiting for?! Grab the sceptres!"

The group hustles and waits not for what lies in the water to emerge, running back and taking off the placed sceptres. Luckily for them, the creatures below spend some time searching for a missing water elemental. With the sceptres removed, the door slowly closes again, trapping whatever is left behind.

When they appear with the scepters, Juhnavi startles, and says, "Oh good, you're back! That was sudden, did you encounter some danger? Thank you for getting this," as she looks at the scepter to translate the markings on it.

"Well, I'm not familiar with this word, but transliterated phonetically, it would be 'Irian'. Perhaps the name of his first wife?"

Liberty's Edge

Mosquito Witch Handouts

Actually the sceptre does not have any markings...The written word Irian is on the altar. Also, there is no slot on the side of the walls, you are just meant to hold them to touch the walls.

As the wall is translated and the mechanism of the corridor explained by Juhnavi (who spend a good amount of time studying it earlier!), Kramac believes he has figured the puzzle. The panels on each side start to glow as the they come into contact with the appropriate sceptre and soon a loud clicking noise is heard. With immediate effect, the blades slow down and retreat into the walls and floor revealing the next set of blades.

I'm going to go ahead and give you both sets in advance to speed it up! Again, these are all in Ancient Osiriani, so Juhnavi really has to translate this all.

Second Wall:
The eastern panel reads, “My right hand”.
The western panel reads, “The bringer of faith”

Third Wall:
The eastern panel reads “The desert flower”
The western panel reads “The luxurious one”

And at the end of the corridor, a plain stone door. (Unlocked, and looks like it can be opened)

Seems like I forgot to upload a map! Doing it now along with a pictorial of the last sceptre you found.

With help from one of his friends, they'll touch the second wall east panel with the Kiranna sceptre and the west panel with Iltorian. If that works, on the third wall, they'll touch the east panel with Elea and the west with Shasha...

Liberty's Edge

Ingrge easily figures the solution to the puzzles and leads the group in coordinating the scepters. And like magic, when they come into contact with the wall panels, they glow and soon follows the immediate halting and retracting of the wall of blades.

Confident that the door is untrapped, Ingrge gives Juhnavi the green light to push it open. The door slowly swings open to reveal a large chamber made mostly from the same sandstone that dominates this place. A strip of black marble runs from an altar on the east end of the room, through the floor, to a throne that sits on the west end of the chamber. Behind the throne, another stone door but this one looks unable to open through normal physical means.

Resting on the arm of the throne is another, scepter. This scepter is made of simple sandstone and appears older than all the rest. An inscription on the throne in ancient Osiriani reads:

“The throne of the Merchant Prince—those who would seek audience must sit and judge the worth of all things.”

On the east side of the room is an altar made of the same black stone as the strip running through the room and the throne on the opposite side. Atop the altar are seven depressions, each one large enough to fit any one of the rods. On the left side of the altar, just outside the row of depressions, is a small piece of quartz, embedded into the stone. On the right side, opposite the piece of quartz, is a beautiful diamond.

When I find out how much damage Karsa took, I'll use some charges on him since I caused it...

With Juhnavi casting Resist Fire on him and as he's back at full health, Ingrge will make sure everyone is out of the room this time, and have another go at it...

Disable Device: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33

I'm assuming that the first attempt resulting in a catastrophic failure would result in the next two attempts being obsolete...if not, feel free to use them instead...also assuming that no one has to sit in the seat for just disarming the trap...

The 32 roll will be able to disarm the trap, and the 30 would have been moot but not low enough to trigger the trap. Was pausing with regards to see if you would have healed or done something differently after knowing the first attempt failed miserably.

Although, with regard to the earlier damage, the scenario punishes you when you try to bypass the trap, in fact, attempting to solve it would have resulted in a less severe impact as the number of flames that attacked would have been dependent on how many were wrong. The fact that there was no sceptre's in the indents, cause all flames to go off!

Karsa's actions depend on whether or not he is able to take an immediate action when the trap goes off. As we arent in initiative the rules are unclear but if you can't it does make things like feather fall rather pointless.

If Karsa can take an immediate action:

As the flames hurtle towards him Karsa waves a hand and casts a spell, smiling enigmatically. The flames leap towads the throne and splash harmlessly against an invisible barrier which is revealed by the fire.

Nice try you murderous old git but you need to do better than that to deal with me!

Casting emergency force sphere, effectively enclosing himself in a wall of force. It's an immediate action spell.

If Karsa cannot take an immediate action:

Ow, ow, ow, that bloody well hurt

Resist reduces the damage to 43. He draws a wand of infernal healing and heals himself over several minutes.

Personally I would say yes to an immediate action. It makes sense to me.

Anyone want to attempt to appraise the seven sceptres now that the trap is disabled?

If I use object reading to study them, would it be possible to focus my reading of the objects' history to determine how valuable the owner thought they were?

Based off the object reading text, I would say that you are able to determine emotional worth as oppose to monetary worth. I'm not going to put an order for emotional value, but words to describe the feelings instead.

Sceptre of Alkhet: "Cheaply made"

Sceptre of ???: "nothing"

Sceptre of Iltorian. "Deep respect for"

Sceptre of Osomi "Strong emotions of love"

Sceptre of Kiranna: “Strong emotions, arguably the most respected"

Sceptre of Elea: "beautiful feelings, but superficial"

Sceptre of Shasha "Emotionally neutral "

"Such objects merely symbolise the corruption of the society that held this merchant in esteem. Love. Friendship. Freedom. These are things of value."

Whilst being utterly dismissive, Kiboko offers his limited knowledge of the precious materials used in the sceptres' construction. Take 10 on Appraise checks to Aid Another, for a successful result of 11 on each sceptre.
