Uhvat Balanos
|
"I'm afraid not, Gadrielle." Uhvat turns to Chinchi. "I understand you have some talent with mechanical devices. Would you be able to open it?"
Galonor the Mighty
|
"What is starmetal?" Galonor asks, as he studies the lock. "Stand back! Let us destroy it and open if nothing else!" He readies his greatsword and awaits the word.
If nothing else, I will forcefully destroy the lock! With power attack it is a 2d6+9 base dmg
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Since it doesn't call it out, I'll say the lock is a part of the wardrobe. Without picking it (well, whatever the equivalent of picking is to a combination lock - guessing?), there's no way to destroy the lock without destroying the wardrobe along with it.
Petromyscus "Chinchi" Spalaxchi
|
Chinchi tries his hand at opening the lock.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
If that doesn't work, he stands back, trying to avoid any splinters caused by Galonor's alternate method of entry.
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Chinchi's best efforts don't seem to find the correct combination, so the mighty half-orc earns his kindling merit badge and reduces the wardrobe to a pile of rubble. In the wreckage you find a busted chest
containing 450 gp, 1,250 sp, a pouch of six onyx pieces worth 50 gp each, and a Spire transport token.
Also there is a very confused termite. He's not sure what happened, but he's pretty certain it was the end of the world.
Petromyscus "Chinchi" Spalaxchi
|
Chinchi smiles as he sees the treasure, and then his heart melts as he sees the poor termite. Carefully, he picks up the vermin, and few pieces of wood, and puts it all in a small sack. "There, there, little one..."
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Okay, we have loot and a couple unexplored rooms. Which way would you like to go next?
Uhvat Balanos
|
I suggest the room(s) to the south of where we are then work our way back northwest?
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
You move down the corridor to the first door. You can smell an overwhelming scent of animal and hear a cacophony of animal noises from behind the door.
Uhvat Balanos
|
"Some animals behind this," Uhvat whispers, rather redundantly. He moves up to the door, first checking that it is not trapped. Once the rest of the team have given the green light, he swings it wide open...
perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Gadrielle Credenza
|
Gadrielle's nose wrinkles at the odorous smell of animal waste, but otherwise lets Chinchi and Uhvat take the lead.
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The door swings open as the tune begins. This room is full of small cages containing rabbits, mice, rats, cats, and dogs. The din is deafening, and the room smells strongly of animal waste.
A man, wearing dirty robes and accompanied by a cobra made of iron, looks up from the wooden table where he is dissecting a malformed dog. He scowls. "Ah, the intruders making the din outside. I had hoped you'd choke and die before disturbing me. Ah well. Not so lucky today. Still, the gnome might make for a viable test subject, eh Rictus?" He addresses the cobra, who focuses on you lot.
Actions? Anything hostile will immediately move into combat.
Gadrielle Credenza
|
Gadrielle puts her head through the opening besides Uhvat. "If you even sneeze in "the gnome"'s direction, you are going to experience what it's like to not have any teeth." She then shifts her attention to "Rictus". "Rictus, could you inform Doctor Protomancy here that most, if not all his allies slash landlords have either died or run off, and that if he wishes to continue his lab experiments he needs to relocate in the next five minutes? Tell him that rent in Corenthyn is really low this time of year."
Gadrielle Credenza
|
This feels more like a threat to me, although I suppose I'm not directly threatening him...
Intimidate: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Nice roll!
The man pales, then takes a moment to compose himself. "Ah. I see, that's the way it is, then. Well, come Rictus, let us seek our fortunes elsewhere. I think this line of scientific inquiry is at an end, anyway." He edges past you, whistling for the iron serpent which follows him like a dog, keeping its faintly glowing eyes on you as he passes.
Unless anyone makes a hostile move, he leaves without incident, leaving behind cages of slightly changed animals. Some have violent brightly colored fur that nature never created, some have extra limbs and a couple float slightly above the floors of their cages. They look malnourished and emaciated, but not diseased or otherwise dangerous.
Uhvat Balanos
|
Oh, didn't realise there was a room there! Was looking at the one south of Uhvat! :)
Uhvat glances at each of the animals in turn, gradually pitying them more and more. "Um, shall we release them?"
When the party is ready, he'll open the door south of him.
Galonor the Mighty
|
Galonor lags behind the group with his mind preoccupied with otherworldly matters but keep his weapon ready wary should combat break out at any minute.
Judging that the animals can do no harm, he immediately tends to the cages one by one."I see no danger, let us free these unnatural beast from captivation."
Ready for next door!
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Several of the less domesticated animals bolt as soon as the cages are open. The dogs and cats look wary, but unharmed and sniff your hands, apparently looking for food.
The next door turns out to be a kitchen. A large hearth takes up most of the south wall, and there’s a basin for washing up against the west wall. Dry goods, provisions, and cooking gear clutter the space.
Searching yields nothing of much value.
The next door to the north is much more interesting! This room is choked with tables stacked with stills and alembics, flasks, bubbling vats, and crockery. The eastern wall is fitted with stout wine racks filled with bottles of various sizes and shapes.
Perception and Craft: Alchemy checks, please!
Uhvat Balanos
|
After being sure that there are no strange creatures, humanoids or otherwise in the room, Uhvat steps in carefully staring at the various strange liquids.
perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Uhvat notices that each potion and bottle is clearly labeled. However, only two bottles are underlined. They are both labeled 'Bull's Strength'. The other bottles are 11 bottles of wine, five bottles of brandy, eight bottles of vinegar, 14 vials of synesthetic agent; eight vials of antidote for synesthetic agent, three vials of acid, four vials of Small centipede venom, and three potions of cure light wounds.
Black Sun
|
In case there's any more to be done (given that you asked us all for plural "checks")...
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Uhvat hit the big check. Alchemy would have given the same information, but at a lower DC.
Petromyscus "Chinchi" Spalaxchi
|
Chinchi feeds as many of the animals as will stay for it, and then starts inventorying the bottles. "We might as well help ourselves, right?"
Looking around for boxes or crates, he hopes to package up the wine safely, at least... and the Centipede poison - that stuff's expensive!
Gadrielle Credenza
|
Nodding appreciatively, Gadrielle motions back towards the area where the shrine stood. Nearby, a single door lies unopened. "Hopefully we are done with this level of the spire soon..."
Perception vs Shenanigans: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
In a hurry, Gadrielle only give the door the most cursory of glances, declaring: "Looks clear. Galonor, on your mark."
Uhvat Balanos
|
"Yes, I hope we are." Calm descends upon Uhvat as he moves up behind Gadrielle and nods his readiness.
Zifan the Graceful
|
"He probably would have lied." She gives a couple of the dogs a pat and helps Chinci feed the animals, and pack up the wine and supplies.
"Let's keep looking. We may be finished soon."
Black Sun
|
| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"He probably would have lied."
"Why?" Asks Black Sun in an abrupt monotone. "What incentive would he have?"
After an moment's pause, as though wrestling with something within, she adds, "And why apply probability to individuals? We do not determine our actions by the roll of dice."
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
An ancient stone door opens into a dusty old crypt. Five stone sepulchers sit in the chamber’s northern and center portions. Each is carved with an effigy of a masked man or woman. To the south, one large sepulcher lies, its lid secured with iron bands.
Uhvat Balanos
|
Uhvat stares at the sepulcher suspiciously, fearing it might have an undead encased within. He approaches it cautiously and examines it.
perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The bands look sturdy. The other tombs have masked carved on the faces, but you realize they were not part of the original carvings, but added rather recently.
The tomb with the bands on it has faint writing, barely discernible. The name "Kalast Tynal" is carved into the stone.
Zifan the Graceful
|
"This can't be at all bad for us. I don't know much about anything, but I know that a tomb with sturdy bands can't be good." She readies herself just in case something jumps out at them.
Black Sun
|
Black Sun simply stares at some point between/beyond Zifan and the coffin with a deeply bewildered expression.
'Can't be'...'bad'...'don't know'...'can't be good'...what???
Uhvat Balanos
|
"Does anyone know who this Kalast Tynal is?" Uhvat stares at the tomb suspiciously. "I fear to disturb whatever is bound within but I also loath leaving whatever is within who might break out later to come after us unprepared. What say you?"
OOC, I say go for it! Let's clear everything in the Spire! Also, don't want to lose any potential gold. :)

What Knowledge checks would be helpful here?
Knowledge (Dungeoneering): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Failing that, there's also another roll I could make here:
Knowledge (?): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 Let me know if it's worth it, though, and what particular Knowledge other than those first two that would be.
Black Sun suddenly notices the thin, slow trickle of blood the color of assassin-vine berries she has been sporadically trailing behind her for rather a while now.
"Umm...I almost forgot: I am quite damaged. Would someone please fix me?"
Uhvat Balanos
|
"Ah, apologies Black Sun. I somehow failed to notice your injuries. Here."
Do you have your own wand of clw? If not, Uhvat will use his.
wand of clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
wand of clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Gadrielle Credenza
|
Gadrielle inspects the banded sarcophagus. "Lets open this one ... Cautiously." She steps to the side, readying her weapon to come down upon the inhabitant of the coffin.
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
You can remove the bands, though it will take a few moments. Please place your tokens accordingly!
The bands are removed, one by one, until the last remains. It is popped off and the stone sarcophagus is still, not moving. With a last heave, you slide the lid off to reveal a corpse lying in the stone. It's still quite juicy and wears an ornate golden pectoral piece.
Gadrielle Credenza
|
Gadrielle shifts her grip upon the lucerne hammer, ready to bring down her hammer on the creature within. She looks to the others to see if they are thinking what she is thinking.
Any reason we shouldn't Coup de Grace this body?
| Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Gadrielle's raised hammer seems to trigger something as the corpse suddenly opens it eyes and hisses, red lights glowing where eyeballs once rested!

Assuming Chinchi is going to inspire courage and wave banner again, Uhvat delays until he does so. If not, please deduct the bonuses from my rolls below.
Uhvat gasps audibly when the creature arises, although he should hardly have been surprised. He waits briefly for Chinchi to bring forth his inspiration, then brings down his lash upon the undead creature.
