Lorelendral Teklet |
"SOrry, can't help you Grim... my book-learning on religions is extremely limited.... in fact, limited to.. well... none.. " Lore casts a chagrined look at Grim.
Brother Grimdoc |
"Never a problem Miss Lore. You have more divine power than any of the rest of us...so someone upstairs be smilin' upon ye!" Grim chuckles back.
"I am just not gettin' a good feelin' about that room as Ruprecht pointed out. That last fight gave us a good scare and I am not sure if we are equipped to tackle anything tougher if vampyres or ghosts decide to pay us a visit. Any of the rest of you have any experience in this area? Ellis? Yo! Ellis, you've been a quiet one for awhile. Have you gots anythin' to say on the shadowy stuff?"
I am not sure if Ellis has permanently checked out. We would have patched up the goat if it was possible after the last fight.
Ruprecht Antillious |
The elf gulps as he ponders the situation. "Well, we clearly have to investigate the room. A room with an evil feeling like this has to be prominent in this dungeon's design. I'm going in, but I'd be much obliged if you all can watch out for me. When I scream, please come running." He slowly moves 15' into the room.
Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
DrGabe |
Grim can't recall anything from the school lessons he skipped as a child.
Pearing into the room, Ruprecht can't see anything. However, as he starts to walk into the room a horrible beast comprised of shadows materializes and tries to strike Ruprecht!
Touch Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5, but the monster can't make contact with the warrior.
PC's turn. No map right now. Ruprecht is in the room and in base contact. All of the rest are out of the room and not in base contact. Please tell me if you are using a weapon with any magical properties...
Ruprecht Antillious |
"Augh. The shadows are attacking me!"
The alchemist moves 5' back from the monster, and tries to protect himself as best as he can from the shadow.
Total defense action. Touch AC is 17.
Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore casts shield of faith on herself, preparatory to going in to try to deal with the shadow.
Arduino. |
Arduino covers a smile and barks out in a serious voice "Adventurers! Attack the darkness!" Stepping forwards, he tries to pull Ruprecht away as Kin strikes at it.
Kin attack
Bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
No magic.
Arduino tries to Reposition Ruprecht, pulling him away.
1d20 - 2 ⇒ (13) - 2 = 11
DrGabe |
Kin bites the shadowy monster, but her fangs just sink into thin air. The monster doesn't appear hurt at all. Ruprecht's movement puts him back into the hallway and out of the room. The monster focuses his attacks on the bird. Touch Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 Strength Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1 if that hits.
PC's turn
Ruprecht Antillious |
Knowing he had no way to harm the undead, the alchemist continues with his total defense action.
Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore moves forward and casts so as not to catch Grim in the radius of her spell. assuming kin is in the air so won't be hit

Grim is able to touch the wand to the mysterious creature, but it seems to affect it only a little. Lore's flame flashes across the room but the monster moving quicker than light itself dodges the worst of the damage. Only a small part of the creature starts to disassemble.

Ruprecht pulls his wand of CLW and tries to emulate the dwarf.

DrGabe |
The creature is suddenly hit with blasts of magic and it slowly starts to dissolve some of its shadowy form. The monster still maintains its grasp on reality and continues to fight the bird - Touch Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 for Strength Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
PC's turn.... didn't someone get a ghost touch weapon earlier this adventure?

Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore throws her second flame at the creature.

Ruprecht tries again to damage the monster. Id imagine I can 5' step and flank right now.

UMD 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

DrGabe |
I have done this dungeon four times at this point, and I can't recall who got it and who didn't. It was hidden and needed a fairly high perception to get.
Both Lore and Ruprecht unleash powerful magic, the unnatural monsters starts to dissolve. However, it hangs on with unnerving resolve to the material world.
Arduino's turn
Ruprecht Antillious |
Just a note for my own recordkeeping...used 2 charges from the wand. 22 charges remaining.
Ruprecht Antillious |
I'm not sure. I've seen it played both ways, but most of my games have people say its plus one instead of plus three...
Brother Grimdoc |
My understanding is unless otherwise specified, scrolls, wands etc use the lowest level and stat required to cast the spell. So clw is almost always 1d8+1 with dc11. Cmw would be 2d8+3 with DC 13 ( level 2 spell and min 12 stat to cast it.). You can buy or find wands with higher caster levels. I recently saw a wand of Magic Missile cl 5 ( so 3 missiles) which is nice.
Lorelendral Teklet |
yes, wands are at lowest caster level unless you pay for higher caster level, which cost more
Brother Grimdoc |
Grim waits for another shot at the spirit then tries again to stick it with the wand.

Lorelendral Teklet |
We still waiting on Arduino?
Arduino. |
Apologies
The creature's cold touch solidly lands on Kin's neck and she lets out a loud caw of surprise as she feels her strength drain away.
Bite: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Claw: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Claw: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
DrGabe |
Grim, I would rule in your favor. I think you only loose a charge if you fail your UMD roll (need to look that up later today actually). No worries Arduino.
Kin flashes her claw several times, but where she would normally find a flesh to dig into, she finds only air.
The monster continues its assault on the explorers. This time it attacks Grim and the strange device he is holding! Touch Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 for Strength Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
PC's turn.
Ruprecht Antillious |
Ruprecht grits his teeth, and brandishes his wand once more, hoping beyond hope that the shadow could be hit yet again.
Melee touch attack 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 1 + 2 = 13
UMD 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
If activated, damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Brother Grimdoc |
Grim is severely weakened by the blow from the spirit.
"Ohhch...so weak. We must stop this thing as I fear another touch like that and I will be unable to even move..."
wand, touch: 1d20 + 4 - 3 ⇒ (20) + 4 - 3 = 21 damage : 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 dc11 will
Not sure if these can be critted...if so, add in another...
wand, touch, confirm: 1d20 + 4 - 3 ⇒ (20) + 4 - 3 = 21 damage : 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
ah finally after rolling a bucketload of 4's I guess it takes getting drained to bring out the desperation.
DrGabe |
Ruprecht's attempt fails to touch the elusive foe, however Grim takes advantage of the situation and draws off of his own desperation and manages to inflict damage again on the beast. This last blast of holy energy sends the shadow back into the darkness. The image of the monster disspates into a million pieces. When this happens, a small jewel (lapis lazuli) drops to the ground with a clink.
When you leave this room, you are only a few feet from the main room of the dungeon - the room with the door.
Brother Grimdoc |
Grim's eyes light up at the sight of the jewel, but then dim.
"Alas, this bauble may be one of the keys we needed. But I am so cold, I am weak to the point I am not sure I can continue just yet. "
Not ever having suffered the effects before, Grim sits for a rest, waiting for his strength to return. When it does not, he grows more weary.
"I may need more healing than I thought. Arduino, how s Kin doing? "
Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore moves over to Grim and sadly shakes her head... "I have no healing for what ails you, my friend, only time can heal this, or magics more powerful than those I can command. I am very sorry."
SOrry, no lesser restorations here yet...
Arduino. |
Arduino strokes along her feathers and helps pull her wings up into a more comfortable position. "She's weak; I hope we do not fight any more goblins before our business is concluded here. She may be too weak to slice their throats, and could never live that down."
Pausing for a moment, he continues "If we cannot heal... let us move on, but be wary."
Ruprecht Antillious |
"Back at the door again, eh? There must be some way to get through this thing. Let's give it another once over."
The elf steps to the door again (taking 20 to Perception making it a 27), to examine it thoroughly.
Ruprecht Antillious |
"Call me crazy, everyone, but perhaps the stones we have recovered are the keys to opening this door. Which stones will fit in which sockets, I wonder?" If Grim hands over the lapis lazuli, the elf will check to see if there is one place that it fits snugly into.
Ruprecht Antillious |
Sorry, DM. I missed that link. OK, 7 slots for stones. What sort of stones have we found? I haven't kept up that closely with any stones. Where they all the same shade or did they come in other colors? Total metagame here, but due to past experience over the years, whenever I have something like this with 7 openings and possible colors, I always look for ROY G BIV, if it might be applicable.
