"I'll say! Like - fer example - what the hell we do with all this gear? And anyhow - the real question that be vexing me hard is - what the hell did this to all these folk?"
"Because it's a cinch that whatever did it had some sort o' magical power - and if it did - well... Why the bloody hell didn't it - whatever the hell it was - do a little magical detection and take this bloody stuff itself? It should be shining bright and true with that spell like a fire at Yuletide, eh? But it all be left here for any to find," Brett adds.

Yillim Dross |

Taking the plates from the halfling, Yillim nods.
You are correct. If I am to find my way in this world, I must do it with my own senses, and under my own power. I thank you for this food, and know that you will be repaid for your hospitality.
With soft soft and careful step, he approaches the half elf, watching her move, the firelight reflecting off her scimitar, and casting lighter shadows about the camp.
Miss, would you like some food? The halfling over yonder has made some stew, and although I am hungry enough to eat both plates, It would do me good to sit and speak with you while we both eat.
He slowly sits, crossing his legs carfully as he descends, and falters a bit, not used to having his other arms so bound beneath his covering, and offers the half-elf woman the plate awkwardly
May I know your name, miss, or if not that, what you prefer to be called?

Brett Rowan |

"Well..." Brett says with a shrug.
"I guess that the puzzle can wait then, eh? Anyhow - me question was less about that rock that raises dead folk - which sounds right handy, I'll allow - but more about the rest o' this hash."
"Fer example - the seeing stone? Mayhap that be how they done communicated with their lads over in that canyon base? And anyway - what do we do with the loot we got here already? Bronze pieces, gold pieces, rubies - magic rings, swords, knives - all that sort o' thing - and that's not mentioning the pile of bracelets, cups, candlesticks, earrings, armbands, and all that other hash that be in the other chest - and what about the incense - that be worth something, too - not counting the magical incenses?"
"That all ought to be going back in a treasury or something - I reckon - excepting maybe the big pile of loot; ye know, the candlesticks and earrings and such - that aint' be our'n - if I had to guess, it be townsfolk that maybe sold it off fer drugs and other hash in the town. Maybe it be better to return it to them - though I don't know on to find out who it belong to on that account," he adds, eyeing that part of the treasure skeptically.
"But anyhow - all the other stuff - the magic rings, the knives and swords - what be that fer - and what we be doing with it? Seems like pretty good stuff - and I guess if beasties can be crawling about that can wipe out all the folk here that carried this - and be strong enough to do this - and just leave it lay - why.... chances are that things may be tougher out there then I reckoned," he muses.
"We may want this gear - and more like it, but then again - maybe not. Anyone here got ideas on things, or should we done save it fer the council chambers back home," he adds, as if suddenly aware that there are witnesses - and gives an obvious nod to the new folk, as if he is not sure that they should be included in this discussion.

Lia halts in her exercise and lowers her scimitar at the approach of the newcomer and his offer of food. Tilting her head, she studies him with curious green eyes. Lia lays the scimitar upon the earth and stretches out her hand and takes the plate from his hand with a brisk nod of thanks.
Once seated, she matches her body position and crosses her legs beneath her, balancing the plate atop her lap.
"I am Lia," before proceeding to pick up the pork from the stew with her fingers and biting into it. Noticing his awkwardness, she motions to his coverings, "Take them off and be yourself. Be comfortable", once again her stare fixed on his face.
She abruptly cuts off the stare and calls her wolf to her side and shares the succulent meat with Revion. "Blackfang not hungry?", motioning with her hand toward the dozing larger wolf by the fire.
"Do not be afraid of me", she declares openly. "I will not hurt you." Her eyes seem to fill her pretty face. Lia was unused to direct attention, especially from a man, and this one intrigued and confused her.
"What do you seek, more than man Yillim? The sincerity was obvious in her eyes and body language, waiting patiently for him to speak, to answer her.

Ariarh Kane |

I agree it is a puzzle the gods have set for us. For now I believe it should go into the safe hands of our baroness for the time being.
"Thank you, Arasmes. I will hold and protect the Philosopher's Stone and we as a Council will decide what needs to be done with this precious item, as well as the other pieces in our possession, once we return to Saravale."

Ariarh Kane |

"All these questions may be better answered once we return to the capital and the Council has time to consider each piece and apply them to the Treasury or elsewhere. For the time being, we protect the most precious of items and the rest we can bag and carry with us. A number of councilmen are establishing baronies within Praxis and some of these items may be useful to the secondary councils being established in those provinces. Yet, it is too soon and unwise to discuss distribution, out here on the open plains. Let us leave it upon our return home."

Isani Isu |

Arasmes moves over a bit on his blanket spread upon the grass to make room for Isani. Caliphana is laying beside him on the other side resting her head in his lap. His hands running through her long blue mane, he smiles at Isani and says You never need to ask if you may join us, sadiqati. You are always welcome. I apologize for my distance earlier. I was trying to come to terms with what we were seeing. A powerful creature we face...yet again. It almost seems as if the gods are conspiring against us. That maybe they do not want Praxis to succeed. I know that is a terrible thought but I despair at times when I see scenes such as this. Looking around at the group and most especially the newcomers he says What do you make of the new ones? Cali told me she welcomed the wolves but that they did not respond. Perhaps they can only understand and not speak.
Isani nods her head gently in acceptance and seats herself beside Arasmes and the reposed Caliphana. "You are kind, sadiqi and sadiqati", including the lovely planar creature for she had become a new friend.
She sat with her hands neatly folded in her lap, observing the tenderness between Arasmes and Caliphaha and could not help the envy from touching her heart. Being on her own in a new country and feeling unsettled within the community and people had left an undefined ache inside her. Gazing up into the starlit sky, she listens to the sounds of the encampment and to Arasmes' concerns regarding the creature which killed The Black Kota convoy.
When she finally controls some of the more turbulent feelings inside her, she responds,
"Whatever manner of creature killed the cultist leader and his followers it can only be made worse if it is one of the experiments created by Amun and his people. I do not like not knowing what is waiting for us, hidden from our sight." She scans the dark horizon and sends a silent prayer to the Everlight.
"I cannot speak for the gods yet I do not see their purpose in destroying an ideal, like Saravale, founded on good values and ideals. The gods leave us to our labors, sadiqi. We must be wiser in our endeavours."
Pausing to look across to the wolves in their company, the big black one by the fire and the smaller grey by the half elf's side, she answers Arasmes' question, "Like the Lady Ariarh's griffon, I do believe those two can understand certain human languages but alas cannot speak them."
She turns silent again and enjoys the peace beside Arasmes. When Councilman Rowan speaks of the retrieved items from the deceased cultists, she volunteers an opinion, "If there are personal items that belong to those of our community who were led away by al-Kazeem, then I agree that those items should be returned to their families. Perhaps we can ask family members to list any jewellery and alike worn, carried or owned by their kin and we can match them to what we have collected. In this there will be no dispute or chance of greed blurring truth."

Isani Isu |

Cali raises her head up from Arasmes lap and stretches her head forward, lightly touching Isani on the shoulder before saying in Osiriani Thank you again, Bint al'Shams. I enjoy my new form. With that she pulls her head back to resume being scratched by Arasmes.
"It is my honour, Caliphana. A first experience and one I shall not forget."

Ariarh Kane |

”Ah – your pardon lady,” he adds, hearing Ariarh’s words.
”No – it was no intrusion – not at all. I was just watching the stars… You know that next month I am to marry Dasha?” he adds, somewhat absently.
”I confess – I love her dearly, and she means much to me that I don’t have the words for – as I am no poet… yet; I wonder, at times – am I am able to be what she will best need? I have made many mistakes in my life – I do not wish to make another. I know that, despite my education and background – I have slipped from good advantages in the past and fallen in with rough sorts, if you recall?”
”I do not want to make those mistakes again – and, were I to have children – I would do everything in my power to keep them alive and well. Even so – am I… well – am I up to the challenge in that regard? I don’t know – part of me seeks a small cottage with Dasha – possibly a farm – or, if I am lucky – I would prefer to fish, and to have a cabin by a lake – I think that would be grand.”
”At other times I think of the good Squire Kaid,” he adds the last with a growl of frustration.
”I would see him pay for what he did to me – and my family. I think that with Dasha as my wife – I may wish to return to my lands and seek to reclaim them – and force him out as he did my family. But of course – that is not the choice a man who would take a woman for his love so indulge in. I should turn from such thoughts – but, to you I must say that they are a...
"Robert, in your heart you must know that you are a good man. Mistakes do get made and cannot be the only thing we remember about ourselves. It is heartening to hear a man speak of the love he feels for his beloved and how he would protect her. You have conflicted paths and choosing the right road is difficult at the best of times. Have you spoken to Dasha about your need to remove Squire Kaid from your land and reclaim what is yours? I know in the past you have felt she was too fragile to handle difficult situations but I believe that together you may find a solution to this ... So, I would advise speak openly of your worries to her and together make the decision. She is strong enough for this and together you are stronger yet."

"I cannot speak for the gods yet I do not see...
Arasmes smiles when Isani mentions returning the jewelry and how to do it. As ever you see to the heart of the community and seek to help bring about peace and prosperity. I think that an excellent suggestion. You represent the ideals of Saravale better than anyone else, habibty, for you have a hindrance in your dealings due to your heritage as I do. Yet you prosper in this land and are true of spirit and virtue in spite of the manner of your birth. I am truly honored to have met you and I see Sarenrae's light burns brightly within you and it warms me. He stares a moment longer before realizing what he is doing and breaking his gaze, reddening slightly again. Forgive me, I do not mean to speak so familiarly but you seem to draw it out of me. Cali snorts at him and rolling her eyes, says in his mind You are foolish, Arasmes ibn'Fayad. You need not be embarrassed for sharing the truth. She then rest her head back on his lap like a giant cat or dog seeking a scratch.
Changing the subject to hide a bit of his embarrassment, he says I agree with you about Amun but it is this Lutharo that intrigues me. Who is he? Where is he from? What does he want? We cannot go into another battle as blind as we went into this last one for I am not sure we will survive.
Reclining back he looks up at the stars and says In Katapesh as a boy, I used to lay on the roof of my master's home to escape the cries of pain and terror below. I would look at the stars and think what it would be like to travel among them. Thinking myself mad, I would occasionally hear faint whispers of voices as I watched them. I now know I was hearing the voices of beings calling out to each other across the void. Spirit seeking spirit, soul seeking soul, mind seeking mind, across the vast expanses. It is that realization that has allowed me to form connections and develop my...voice...I suppose is the only thing that I can call it. It is through that voice that I began to be able to call upon creatures throughout the planes. Caliphana was the first and strongest to hear my call.

Blackfang will no doubt wake if he is hungry. His stomach is indeed great, but I think he still prefers the hunt.
The shrouded man then returns his focus to the woman in front of him, adjusting his posture. He loosens a bit, looking around the campsite. The others go about their discussions, the outriders at their watch, the other sleeping.
Thank you Lia. It is good of you to try to put me at ease, but I have learned...perhaps only recently, that sometimes one's own comforts must be put aside to the comforts of others. I think that the night is long enough to let me stretch a bit now, while many take their sleep
Yillim carefully peels the blanket from his back, laying it softly by his side and pushes his shoulders forward. Then, still looking around for anyone he may frighten, he stretches all four arms robustly and cracks his neck, making a slight involuntary groan. His pale skin looks even moreso in the firelight, and his blood, visible underneath, like twisting veins of obsidian and jade.

Disregarding the inconvenience, he continues,
What do I want, then?
he responds to the question with a sigh, pondering, as if the question never occurred to him before this moment.
I suppose I want what all men want. I want a good life, a place to live. Also, like many men, I want revenge.
But at this very moment?
then, with a half smile,
I would like to know more of you, Lia, friend of wolves.

Sup, teh waiph has "Returned" I'm not really back, just able to scrounge up some internet time to post.
Garith rides out with the party, under the orders of teh General who has remained behind. He stays mostly with his men for the ride, but upon approaching the scene of havoc and death even his hardened stomach turns. He dismounts and sets about examining the bodies, separating the good from bad-folk as Councilman Rowan suggested, and assists in collecting gear and items.
He orders the cavalry setting up camp, keeping them moving like a well oiled machine and then removes his armor, and joins the meal, taking it easy after such a harrowing experience.
Seeing that all are fed, he takes a meal, greeting Brett. "Councilman Rowan," he says with a nod, loading a plate, and says with a contented sigh, "Another masterful piece of culinary expertise. Honestly, most militia cooks would use the same items, and just pass them out as trail rations. Well, if you don't mind me saying, your council has the uncanny knack for finding strange and powerful individuals, just happening upon this wolf-rider and the other lady with the wolf... It is truly uncanny."
"But after seeing what we did, i guess it is good that the young ones are keeping their spirits up... Living life, as it were," he says paying a particular glance toward the newcomer and the half elf, as well as the summoner and the Priestess.
"I am unfortunately unaware of the full details of what the council has encountered outside of the city, but the men are rightly fearful of the possibility that a dragon is winging about these parts. Now from stories, those creatures like their hordes, so the magical itmes left rather preclude a dragon's presence, unless it was otherwise occupied, so i was able to calm the men. But you mentioned a giant Crow, and the General has discussed with Arsinian and myself something about these great fearful birds at the temple of Erastil, and if such a creature could do such damage to such a powerful force, I am concerned. There is little my men could do that these men could not already. Were the creatures you have previously encountered capable of such magics as this?" Garith is interested in solving the mystery

”I have not spoken to anyone regarding House Kaid – in fact, your are the first. In truth, his removal would not be easy – it would be rather daunting; for he is well situated. Though he is only a “squire” – this title was not earned through lineage – but bribes and pay-offs to powerful nobles who granted him his title out of thanks for his coin, and continued bribes. If you recall - he was initially bribing Kessel and the Stag Lords so he could move goods - and those goods included slaves... Dasha being one of them. My point is – he has connections who want his money to continue. Also, to remove him – he would not only need to die – but his heirs – and his family. And this would cause great unrest with those who back him, and count on his bribes.”
”This is not a pleasant conversation, I would say – and in fact – I doubt overmuch that if we continued with it that the results would be something that even you would wish to hear of. Even so – it is, as I said – a consideration that I know to be dark; and I should put aside. Such paths – be they a need for vengeance, or a desire to fulfill simple joys – they are, in fact – dreams that ordinary folk may puruse. Yet, if we are to be counted “great” – that is; leaders of our people – we must, as I see it – put aside our own neceassities for the greater good of the community. We must not ask what our own private heart may wish; but what would be best for everyone. Otherwise – we would be quite undone, with all manner of men following other courses of action, and not caring for anyone, or anything – other then their own neesds,” he adds.
”As for Dasha – she is more… her desires are different then mine, I think. She is more interested in what her heart wants; her loves, her needs – and, if she had it – her family, her children, her spouse. This is why I cannot share these things with her – for if I did – she may attempt to do something rash, to see me pleased – and though it in fact may please my heart – my mind would know that – in the end – it would not be best for the community or the nation as a whole. So I keep these things from her – for I know she would want me happy, and that cannot be pursued at this time. If I wished my own happiness I should take a horse – ride north – set torch to the House of Kaid – then take Dasha with me and ride far west and south and make a quiet living for myself in the country, and perhaps start a family. But circumstances have called me to other things – and therefore – I must listen, for that – I believe – is my duty.”
He turns to you – giving you a somewhat sad look and a doleful smile.

Licking the juices from her fingers, she studies him. "You care too much what others think, Yillim. And vengeance will break the heart and the scars will stop it breathing properly again."
Then reflecting on the wolves and the cold darkness all around them, "Even with the stars, this night is dangerous for hunting. Better the wolves stay close to camp", before placing her plate on the ground so Revion could finish his sister's meal.
"I belong to the Mingan clan of the Verduran Forest ruled by Andoran. Meerah, the She-Wolf, adopted me, a lone wandering child. I grew up in the wilds with my wolf brothers and sisters and cannot remember much of my young human life. Revion is a son of Meerah."
Revion lifts his head at the mention of his name in the story but settles back down to finish the last of the stew. Lia watches her brother fill his belly with the cooked meal knowing he preferred fresh kill. "Tomorrow we hunt, brother."
Switching her attention to Yillim, she motions her head toward Blackfang. "The sleeping Black one, how did he come to be your companion?"

”Garith – good lad; I’m glad to see someone’s interested in this – between you and I – the whole thing be downright spooky,” he adds.
”So – here’s the straight word; and – as I see it – yer orders.”
”First thing – the chief person around here that be doing any magic investigating is that young blighter Galen – he’s been making notes, testing blast size, checking and rechecking bodies and positions, and cross-referencing his notes with what he’s got.”
"So - talk to him first, as I see it - and maybe Isani - the dark haired lass, ye know; the one that keeps giving me those sly winks and pouty smiles? Well - anyhow - can't help her on that account; after all, it is me... But anyhow - she picked up a few clues on her own, too; she may have some tips fer ye."
”Ask about the camp now – be discreet like – and write down everything ye find out. But don’t bandy it about too much – I don’t want the men knowing what’s what – as ye’re right – it looks like it may unsettle ‘em.”
”Talk to whoever ye think is best in camp now, but over the next day – cross-reference with any knowledge ye can find back at town on beasts – magical or otherwise – that got the power to use sonic attacks. We got the word that was it fer sure.”
”Once ye get this file set up on whatever supernatural attacks are being put together – I want more information. I want a secondary report prepared for my own private examination – but a primary report for the main council – and third report for your boss General Malas’rae back at camp.”
Brett strokes his chin a moment – pondering something.
”Since we got to this bloody place we’ve been bumping into and out of all sorts of poxing devilment that be beyond the realm of normal understanding. I done seen wyrd black rocks of evil intent – alchemical adjustments to flesh and bone – bonding of ghosts and other spooks to living types so that undead forest Drakes can be giving birth to Fey Monsters. I seen strange glyphs that blend Fey and Celestial made on walls that weren’t there when looked first time – and legends that nobody be hearing on…”
”Meantime - fer some reason the Council thinks I be best served to sort o’ spy out this nonsense and do all this sort o’ hash. Lad – between ye and I – I got too much on my plate fer all that, eh?”
”This is what I want ye to do – and yer formal orders; as such – along with all the other hash I just laid out.”
”As ye get them notes, over the next several weeks what I want to see is you put together a team of men – get some lads who have ability to decipher these clues put together. Once they be put together – I want you to compile all the notes ye got – and prepare a full report fer me.”
”I want ye to bloody form a team o’ private invesitigators – not too large, mind ye – a few capable lads or lasses in the town – or some of the provinces that be popping up. I want a team; quiet and small – that be good at getting to the heart of all these bloody “mysteries” we keep bumping into. I want the team made and ready to look over – by the end of the next month. I want them to report to me directly at me own province out west. I want them expert – or near as ye can find ‘em – on being good at sleuthing these mysteries out.”
”Council got a heap o’ work on it’s plate – and this is just one more pestle o’ nonsense to deal with. We can’t be everywhere at once, as it were. So – I need ye to make a team o’ paranormal, supernatural, and otherworldly investigator types – send out some word. Hell – ye don’t even need to be on it yerself – just get the bloody ball rolling, eh?”
"Don't worry about coin, nor a place to meet - I'll get that set up myself - as "Spymaster" - or whatever the hell title they be giving me - it be kind o' my job to figure this hash out. So - that means they be under me jurisdiction - which means I bloody got to pay 'em - which I will; once I see the list."
”Once that be done; them notified and alerted to the plans – I want ‘em ready to go. That way folk with a better head fer this nonsense can answer these type o’ questions – if they want – and folk who prefer running government can do that. It be too much o’ a mess to both, as I see it…” he adds.
”Well – ye got all that – or did ye need me to write it down?” he says, planting his hands on his hips and giving Garith a stare.
Garith – in the extremely unlikely event that you don’t see what’s going on – Brett feels that this nation has way too many “side quests” and “crazy mysteries” that the general party, not to mention the Council – simply doesn’t have time for. He’s asking you to put together a team of folks that are looking to solve mysteries – if I were to use “out of game” lingo – I’d call it a “Supernatural” style mission, meets “the X-Files”, meets “Bones”, with a little more leaning to magic and strange curses. Of course – this isn’t necessarily for everyone – but Brett seems to think a specaility team of people that are interested in solving these mysteries on the side would be useful to the Council – he’s asking you to rustle up some help. If you are prepared to know more – a full description can be offered soon. Just let me know – oh – and in the extremely unlikely event that someone other then you read this – feel free to volunteer as well. The idea is creating a side character to help take the heat of you as they would specifically be designed for mystery solving – and not for the usual needs of a regular campaign. More on this to come – if you are interested; but Garith - I expect to see you RP this up with the others. Now - carry out your orders, sir!

Isani Isu |

You need...
Her right hand, which had moved to rest on the blanket, now seemed to have a mind of its own and the fingers stretched so they could just barely brush the Foreign Ambassador's hand. When she realised her reaction to his kind and sweet words, she removed her hand swiftly and her face coloured against the gentle olive tone of her skin. With an unsteady voice she reassures the summoner, "There is nothing to forgive, habibi. I have not said anything that another may not have thought as well. However, your words warm my heart on this cold night."
Then she loses her confidence to speak and allows the silence to keep them company for some minutes.
"The only one among us who has met this Lutharo can only give us scant details. He sits over there with the wild one the Lady Ariarh has taken in. Perhaps the Council should interview him more thoroughly? He may know more than he believes."
Upon hearing his tale of the stars and voices, Isani cannot help but feel a well of compassion for the boy who thought he were mad from all the disembodied voices. "Finding one's voice in a world where sounds can be overpowering is something to celebrate and rejoice, sadiqi."

Ariarh Kane |

Such paths – be they a need for vengeance, or a desire to fulfill simple joys – they are, in fact – dreams that ordinary folk may pursue. Yet, if we are to be counted “great” – that is; leaders of our people – we must, as I see it – put aside our own necessities for the greater good of the community. We must not ask what our own private heart may wish; but what would be best for everyone. Otherwise – we would be quite undone, with all manner of men following other courses of action, and not caring for anyone, or anything – other then their own needs,” he adds.
"The duty of responsibility is honourable and heavy. That you stand by your honour and you strive for the betterment of the community which you guide, lead and support says much of you, Robert. In essence I do understand keeping such things from the person you love, especially if they have the passion to follow through on words at the detriment of all other. But keeping such thoughts private can be a lonely and burdensome task. I am grateful that you have placed trust in me by sharing these thoughts. And I must agree, Squire Kaid seems to have the support of his betters throughout the land and to take him on would mean to take on the rest. They may even put a reward on your head, Robert. Again. I do not envy the breadth of your thoughts, my friend. Mayhap in time, Squire Kaid will be known for his true face and be rendered powerless and then you may legally claim back your property and title."

Ariarh Kane |

After excusing herself from Robert's side and leaving him to his thoughts, Ariarh notices Galen busily writing and drawing in his book and wanders over to him.
"Good evening, Galen. What has you so occupied and industrious this night? Does it have something to do with the destruction of the land around the perished cultists?"

He snorts in disgust.
"They know what he is - and allow his existence - not for matters of decency and honor - but to gainsay them. If he were replaced by a man of greater honor - then what? Where I to return to my home, would I offer such bribes to the men who helped him? Would I pay him off? I would not... and they know this. Yillim Dross |

His half smile widening, apparently more at ease now,
Perhaps I do care too much. I have cared for nothing other than myself for so long, perhaps I feel I must make up for lost time. There was a time, in years past when I held no life precious, and would call no man friend. Only ally, and then only just.
Then, looking to his sleeping companion, he reaches with one hand pantomiming a scratch at the great creature's chin.
When I was taken...when the slavers took me, I know not how much time had passed. They clouded my mind with all manner of herbs and foul concoctions. Looking back with a clear mind upon that time is difficult. It was a time of both pain and rage. I do remember clearly, though the norther man, Lutharo and the snake-like folk that worked alongside him.
Frowning, he looks over towards the place where the creature called "Ani" by the halfling sits, and huffs.
I think when their work on me was complete, they took less care in my watch. Perhaps the were focused on their "successes", or perhaps they had some yet greater work that drew their attention, I do not know, but when I saw my chance to escape, I took it.
Blackfang there, was also victim to the horrors of these folk, though I can only guess at how he was changed. I only knew that this noble beast deserved freedom. Perhaps moreso than I, for he could have no faults that I could see.
As we ran, he took to me like easily, and were It not for his size and persistance, I think I would have gone mad. We have traveled together ever since, and have become like brothers.

Lia noted the look crossing Yillim's face when he drew his eyes to the snake one beside the short hairy man cooking by the fire. "You do not trust her", referencing the snake girl, "She reminds you of the other snake creatures who changed you, tortured you and the Black wolf."
"There is no shame in running. Your life is your own and no thing has right and control. Your suffering and your wolf brother's was not in vain. Use it productively, hone it and change, grow your spirit. You have strength, Yillim. Your companion is a warrior. Walk the path together with honour."

Diplomacy: 1d20+10
”Naturally,” he mutters up from his notes, his brow furrowing as if trying to calculate something, shaking his head with frustration – then recalculating again.
”In point of fact – I am attempting to discover the nature of the attacks – namely; what type of beast may have done this, if beast it was.”
He glances up at you, a stern look on his young features; Param crawling out of his little box, seeing you – yawning, then returning back to rest.
”The nature of Arcane Magic must be aligned to specific laws, of course. These laws are best observed through the Knowledge of the Arcane, and knowing the way spells are truly crafted,” he says, as if beginning a lecture – though you sense his "lecture" is really just his attempt to clear his own head from the frustration.
”In short – one may gage the power and nature of a Wizard, for example – simply by observing things like the blast radius of a fireball which they have cast – or the range of a spell that they use. Once these variables are computed – we can better take into account the true power of the caster.”
”Once that is determined – we can begin the next step; namely – deciphering what potential power the figure had which cast it.”
He directs you to the blast effect on the earth; most of which has been trodden on and trampled - but enough remains that it presents evidence which makes you believe his notes were likely accurate.
”See here – “ he adds, pointing to the ground ”this earth – the damage that was done to it? It is in a cone formation… and look – the damage… Do you see?” he says, directing your gaze now to his various notes, gesturing to charts of computations.
”Were I to compute the potential average in destruction via the solidity of the earth and the frequency of the assaults – I should then be able to postulate a theory in which Damage (D) to the Earth (E) is equal to the average movement of earth and rock. Therefore – solve: if E = hardness of 5 – and approximately 30 feet of earth and stone were moved with the sonic blast being translated with a variable of a frequent equation modifier of a standard one through six probability (the variable being most common in the majority of Arcane Spell Casters, of course; namely – the one through six mathametical probability)… in which, of course – an average median is defined approximately as 3.5 within the variable – and, of course, with the reduction of 5, for the hardness of the earth before transshipment of earth in the cone shaped variable with a 30 foot push movement…”
He glances at you, as if the findings were a bit disturbing.
”Well – as you can see – it’s quite obvious,” he adds with a grim look.
”The facts, and the numbers; they don’t lie! With an median variable of 3.5 on a range of potential average for a spell which does Sonic Damage being generated on an approximate scale of one through six… Ascribing averages to each of the moved earth… and reducing from said movement a fixed variable of 5 for the solid earth… Well; in layman’s terms – if a wizard were to use a spell invoking some sort of “sonic blast” – then the wizard would be able to ascribe the variable one through six modulator at a power of 10! This would suggest that a spell such as, say – Shatter – the caster would need to be at a rank of 10, via his Level of Education… And even then – the Shatter spell does not result in the cone shaped effect we see here; but rather – a radius spread!”
”This suggests to me that we can likely rule out the spell Shatter – given the current variable I have observed, regarding the Cone, instead of a Radius. Even so – if it was the spell Shatter – I should think that the person who used that spell would be quite powerful – again – a wizard who has achieved at least 10 Levels of Education; no mean feat for our nation.”
”And again – what vexes me most is the fact that nature of the spell – if spell it was – does not conform to any sort of spell I know that does sonic damage. Of course - I have only had time to reference the Arcane spell charts - and have had little time to cross-reference these findings with other potentials from Divine Casters - or perhaps Supernatrual abilities, but, even still - it is a start.”
He glances at you, shaking his head.
”Of course – these are merely preliminary notes I have taken – no doubt others may have gleaned more details… Naturally, I am fairly intelligent, but unfortunately my experience and range of education are not as, shall we say – advanced, or as varied, as others in the company. I have little to no knowledge in the nature of Divine Spells - and only a rudimentary knowledge in the nuances of Supernatural Abilities. Perhaps your companions may be able to offer insight on the few clues I have managed to collect, er – if you feel that they are able to, Councilwoman Kane -er - that is to say - Imperatrix,” he adds the last part, suddenly remembering his manners after he is finally able to get off his chest what he was so concerned with.

Yillim Dross |

You are observant, Lia, friend of wolves he nods
And you are correct, about the she-snake. But as wary as I am, I must remain only so. I must reserve judgement for her actions, not the actions of her kin.
And as for using my new strength, I believe that is something I can now do. Your people here, they have a good air about them, although the tension is undeniable. I have been searching a long time for a new way to test myself and "grow my spirit", as you say. I think this land...Praxis? Yes this place is perhaps a good place to begin.
Yillim yawns, wary from the hard ride, and scratches his head, brushing the knots of tangled black hair from his face.
I think for tonight, I shall sleep and dream of a new life. Of a new sky above me, and cool grass below my feet, and all manner of new companions about me.
He leans over to the blanket at his side, and give a nod of thanks for the loan, and then stands quietly. Dusting himself off, he turns to leave Lia to her own council. Taking steps toward Blackfang, he pivots slightling on one foot several paces away, and calls back in a low tone
Perhaps in the morning, your brother and you will hunt with me and mine?
Reaching his friend, he slumps to the ground, and rests his head on the large black wolf's softly moving belly and nods off to sleep.

Hopefully in range to overhear Galen, if not please disregard.
I have heard about a spell that amplifies the voice to incredible levels that some called a Shout spell. Perhaps that is the one. If I remember correctly it occurs most often in the form of a cone and could have done the damage as you described it.

"One creature is not the same as another of its blood. Blood does not mold spirit, does not abide by honour and principle. Watch and learn her ways. Then balance it against what you feel in the pit of your stomach. Instinct should be respected."
"May sleep clean your spirit, more than man Yillim. And that of your Wolf brother. Yes, we will hunt together on the morrow." Lia inclines her head in farewell.
She was not yet tired and picking up the plate rinses it with a little water from her waterskin. Then retrieving the laid scimitar, she returns the plate to the short, hairy man with a simple "I thank you for the good meal" before returning to Revion and resuming her scimitar exercises, letting the light of the fire glint off the blade, making it seem as though ribbons of light wound about her as she danced deftly with her weapon.

You are able to hear this, if you are around... Galen is clearly happy to have any support in this issue.
"I considered that - but I dismissed it - to be fair, out of, well - let us say concern..." he adds.
"According to my current findings - Shout is not consistent with what we see - it would be more likely that the spell Greater Shout, you see?" he adds, pointing at his findings.
"If we assume the Arcane Variable is defined as one through six - and the average being therefore 3.5 - and subtract an estimated hardness of the earth at - according to my findings - a 5 - then it would mean that whoever cast this would have to do an average of 35; meaning 10 one through six ranks of variables, on average, were utilized during the attack!"
"If that is correct - then the Wizard's Level of Education would be nearly 15 ranks of study! And even then... well; we can see that there are multiple assaults here. If that is correct - then the spell was cast multiple times; and if a Wizard was ranked so highly as to cast it that many times... Sir - I shudder at the possibilities!"
"Still - what is your take on that information? Could it be I missed something? For example - many suggest that average mathematical variable for Divine Casters is expanded into a one through eight variable... not the standard one through six... If that variable is correct then... Well; if I readjust my findings somewhat and presume a total variable of 36, instead of 35... then; well - the average Level of Education - I should think - presuming the variable is one through eight per Level of Education - transformed into a potential of, if I'm not mistaken," he adds making a quick note "Ah - roughly 8 Levels of Education - but I know of no Divine Spells that can do sonic damage with a one through eight variable in a cone effect... Divine casting is not my forte'."
"What do you make of that, Sir?" he adds in some frustration.

I believe that there are several creatures that could have made marks like this. Several types of dragons have that ability, certain aberrant creatures, beyond that I am not sure. My knowledge of divine matters is no greater than yours. You have done excellent work nonetheless, Galen.

"I suspect the most noted variable I have discovered - if I may - is that if we compute the variable at one through six - then the average, being 3.5 - would suggest that a completion of 35 was completed. Garith throws a smart salute to Brett, "Sir, I'll get right to it." He finishes his meal looking surprisingly dignifies, considering how very quickly he devoured it, then moves to find Galen. He listens and observes briefly, then rather loosing track of things in the explanation, catches onto the suggestion that the caster may be divine or a magical beast, he chimes in. "Is there the possibility that the marks were made by a summoned creature? Then even if the cultistd vanquished teh monster attacking them, it would leave no trace, and the summoner could then reveal itself and attack with its sonics?
He then adds, "I can speak with the Priestess Isani, while you further consider the scene."

Arasmes ibn'Fayad wrote:Arasmes smiles when Isani mentions returning the jewelry and how to do it. You need...Her right hand, which had moved to rest on the blanket, now seemed to have a mind of its own and the fingers stretched so they could just barely brush the Foreign Ambassador's hand.
"Finding one's voice in a world...
Turning his attention back to Isani, Arasmes hand feels inflamed from where hers touched his. Strange to be feeling this way after so short a time together. Perhaps the gods are working in my life more than I thought.
Arasmes lays back again, content to merely drink in the moment. These moments of peace and were far to rare to ruin. Turning his head, he sees Isani's eyes catch the light, the different colors flashing beautifully.
He looks a second longer but does not want to embarrass her by staring so he returns his gaze to the sky above and thinks about what could be causing the damage in the area.

"Good - tell the other the details as soon as possible - spread the word. When you gather the crew; let me know - inform them I'll be providing them with a workstation, as well as a modest amount of gear and coin to get started."
Brett is looking for a new specialty type here - the short crunch is a 3rd level type with a 25 point buy; and all other standard rules apply. If you elect to join the crew - you'll be an independent working on special cases. Garith - I leave the explanation of the details to you.

Crystal dragons for one have that ability and would be more than able to cause the type of claw marks we see here. Beyond that I am unsure. Some sort of unique creature perhaps.
"Begging your pardon, sir - but perhaps this soldier may be on to something. Is it possible that your ally Caliphana has unique powers and abilities - could it be that something like her was fashioned that did this? And if so - what would we know about the power of the person who created such thing? Can you postulate any theories on this matter?" Galen adds.
"Regarding "Crystal Dragons" - I know very little about them; if there is more to know - I am certainly interested in learning."

Isani
Garith approaches Isani adn Arasmes quietly, having not interacted with the strange woman with the mis-matched eyes, adn being loath to interrupt such a moment as the two seem to be having, but duty is duty. he walks toward them coughing to announce his presence. "Priestess, pardon me but I wished to speak with you. I apologize for interrupting..." he says giving a salute and bow to the foreigners.
He takes an "at-ease" military stance, and begins, "As it is a possibility that a divine caster was throwing around sonic magics. Do you perhaps have any knowledge of any such powers those who draw power from the gods would have to deal this kind of destruction. Galen and Arasmes seem unsure of what possible magics were used, but perhaps you are aware, as part of the priesthood? And if you have any suggestions as to what sort of magical beasts could have done this kind of damage, beyond those such as dragons, for they to are a possibility."
Teh men that Garith knows best and brought are all his "knights" so they are not really well suited for such business. so would gathering the crew happen back at home, right?

That is very possible for a powerful being similar to Caliphana to have done such a thing. As mutable creatures there is no telling the limits of their powers.

"That is quite unacceptable. We need to get information on this matter - we cannot simply allow the matter to rest on guesswork. Powerful magic users are dead - all of their followers - cultists, townsfolk, citizens; bound by narcotics, sorcery - bribes or blackmail; slaves or manipulated by dark curses from evil folk," he says, dabbing some sweat from his forehead.
"Meanwhile - in the hodge-podge of carnage we have discovered is literally a veritable array of excellent goods and gear - both magical and mundane - and they were simply left to rot with the bodies."
"And while you may be agreeing with my theories - with respect, I little evidence of direct suggestions or input," he says with a somewhat impatient tap of his foot.
"Frankly - we are staring at both a mystery and grim horror - and there seems to almost no interest in this at all, except merely abstractly. I find it quite staggering, actually," he adds.

"Oye - that's enough out of ye," Brett suddenly barks out at Galen's tone and disrespect.
"Ye attend to yer business and show a little courtesy - the smug attitude is getting on me last nerve - and I reckon I ain't the only one. Now - ye got yer notes - study them or whatever - and that be that," he adds.
"As fer the rest o' ye - we got what we came fer - seemingly - so let's sack out and be done with this place. We ain't improving nothing by sitting up all night when we got a town to get back to and let 'em know what happened. So - if ye aren't planning on doing anything constructive in solving this hash - I reckon then ye should sleep it off before we leg it tomorrow," he adds.

Sage advice from Brett!
Brett's advice to the party is taken to heart.
Instantly everyone but the guards collapses into a wonderful sleep which lasts exactly 8 hours - and puts you just before dawn from possible prayers/meditations.
You naturally wake up - and everyone takes exactly the time needed to get done what they need to and get on the road - which you do.
You are on the road with all the above gear mentioned and with you - as well as the bodies of the villagers you have discovered with you.
You return to Saravale with less speed then you arrived - mainly as you have put many of the bodies over the horses, and layered the gear on them artfully so you can take it back to your treasury - which is naturally empty - as everything in town of note had to be liquidated last month to keep things running.
You are at Saravale - guards are returned home - a funerary service is presented for the dead - and a meeting scheduled for later that afternoon.
The Council Meeting will occur - meanwhile - please tell me, if anything - what you plan on doing in the meantime.

Brett Rowan |

Wow - well, that was a quick fast-forward - will there be any time for social RP with the new folks?
Okay - quickly - here is what Brett does.
1. He collects all the folk he needs for his "council" - please examine the sheets I presented for them soon.
2. He speaks to Garith specifically about the orders he made - and demands that Garith formally addresses the Council with a summary of the orders he gave him - and any results Garith may have discovered must be shared, including the recruitment idea.
3. He also checks on the dispatches that he had set out last fall - and the results on them (you said I would receive word on them in Spring - when Ariarh and Sir Bronwyn sent their stuff out - I hope Brett hears his news soon?)
4. Brett will deliver letters to Oleg's also - asking him if he has any folk that may be interested in his province.
5. Finally - he'll tell Galen to leave summaries of his notes for the Council - and not be such a cocky little punk, so we don't have to listen to his mouth for a bit! (just kidding - but seriously - we need a break from obnoxious NPC's for a bit). Toward that end - he'll have Anaitis hang by as his bodygaurd - but orders her to be silent, unless speaking directly and PRIVATELY to him.
Sound good? Cool beans!

Regarding social RP - yes! There is plenty of time to do that while on the way back - it can be done via ret-con - but if two players want to talk - please invite that player to your "Province Page" - and then chat with them.
To Mister Dross - if you are invited to a province page for chatting - they'll set up you up on what needs to happen. Brett would gladly talk to you - he wants to know more about who this north man is - but, likely - we'll just find out soon enough. No doubt the others will have their own quick summaries to toss up, too.
To all: While Mister Dross and Corlia are not Council Members - they were on the plains and may have notes for the party to look over via their observations. They can show up to the Council Meeting - if you agree to their presence.
Also: What - if anything - is the specific plans for the treasure. Please "sum up" your ideas on it - and we can go from there.
It may be useful to just sell everything and get the raw gold for the cities treasury - or, if you prefer - come up with something else. Just let me know what that is, though.
So - good hunting!

Ariarh Kane |

Ariarh will do the following:
1. Hold Council meeting to determine what to do with the goods/items collected from al-Kazeem et al. Return possessions which belong to families within Saravale and possibly sell some things and have actual gold in the treasury. Also try to gain more information from Yillim Dross regarding Northerners with scarlet wyvern crests, especially Lutharo, person who enslaved and experimented on him and others.
2. Will collect all her council members for her barony.
3. Will visit with the relatives of the deceased (who left with al-Kazeem) and pass on her condolences. Isani will join her and take down names and personal items so personal effects can be returned.
4. Check in with Selendria Grear or Kae to see if the party (Khald Mak Morn and Henry Ironhorse etc) who travelled to the Spider's Nest have returned. If not, will have to address that -- possibly send a party out to search for them.
5. Will go into town and take a look at al-Kazeem's property and determine how many Black Kota followers are still in Saravale guarding the property. Decide what needs to be done with surviving followers.
6. Show Lia around the capital, especially where the Shrine to Erastil is.
7. Check in with the various refugees (Chimps, Gorillas, gold and silver kobolds and Yuan-ti) and see how they are settling in etc. Speak with Satoru, the gold kobold leader and also Akiko.
8. Speak to Anaitis nes-Ma'at to get the rundown on why she is so distrusting of Isani and her other fears in general that she has been elusive about.
9. Check to see if anything has arrived from her parents. Pen another letter to them and send courier with letter.
10. Confer with Priestess Patty Ironhorse and get a reading regarding her future barony and the issue of the angered ancient tree spirits.

Dain GM |

Sounds good, Ry - if you are uncertain on what gear the party has collected from the bodies - feel free to check my "favorites" - I took the liberty of adding it for quick reference.
Also - I should note - it may be difficult to return some - if not many - of the items via the "loot" (bracelets, necklaces, silverware) - as everyone in town who wants ready loot may claim a piece - honest or not - the items have no name on it (generally - and if they did, they were deliberately scratched off, or removed - probably by the cultists) - and; finally - you have a hunch most of that stuff was used to purchase narcotics from desperate people.
For example - a man with nothing else may have given al-Kazeem his dead father's ring - simply to get a "fix" - in which case, getting it back to him would be decent - but it may be tricky.
To sum this up - we'll just have a flat diplomacy roll - the DC somewhat astronomical - because you'll need lots of help - and you'll likely fail - even WITH the help - because (in this case) all failure means is that not everyone in town is completely happy - but that makes sense; as they wouldn't be.
Finally - you will receive answers regarding your stuff when I get back from work later.
To all: Need finalized stuff for baronies soon. In response to "Councilman Rowan" - I suppose I'll need to do something for him, too - and put up a sheet for him, also - just so you can get a feel for what I'm looking for.
Except it soon - and I'll talk to you cats, lata'

Suggestions in regard to the loot:
* The mundane gear can be distributed among the refugees for they have nothing.
* Misc jewellery -- if we can find the original owners/families we return but if we cannot determine then we sell them -- convert to gold.
* Stow the second crystal of seeing in the Vault with the other we found.
* Daggers and Scimitars can be distributed among the defense forces (city guards, militia) allocated to the capital and/or baronies.
* Scroll to Raise Dead and Philosopher's Stone should also be protected inside the Vault until we have need of them.
* 2 Rings of Protection: Given to those in Council to wear during dangerous missions, battles etc. The rings can form part of that councilman's share of wealth ... but the Capital still owns the rings.
* Sell the incense inside the damaged chest. What kind of incense is it? The four doses of Incense of Meditation can be distributed among the divine spellcasters ... or we could sell them to some reputable merchant.
My barony prep is taking some time -- sorry. I have had my hands full of late and I'm still working on my councilmen. Will get the information to you as soon as I am able.

Garith is trying to compile a report on the attack, but so far there's just a bunch of questions. What would he need to do in order to get answers to those questions?
So far I'm. Thinking of going to Shaezon if I can, in order to use his "Knowledge gamit" to answer the following questions.
1. What spell could cause this damage?
--According to Galen, it would be something a 15th level wizard would toss around, but there were many castings of it. (Garith wouldn't think of it, but it could be a lower level caster Maximizing the spell, so any sonic that does 6d6 maximized would be possible. If done by a sorcerer, he could maximize his sonics on the fly while sommons are tearing everyone up down there, and with greater Inviz, he'd me pretty safe while doing it)
2. It could be a divine caster of more modest level, so what spells could do this damage?
3. What magical beasts can use sonics at high power, as there is magical damage and clawing... suggestions are crystal dragons, and the "crow" as we don't know what the crows are capable of.
If tha party members could toss checks to make conclusions, Garith would like to compile his findings. He alst takes copious notes and requests a copy of Galen's notes any anyone else's too, if anybody took any.
If the players could toss Arcana checks for 1, religion for 2, spellcraft for both 1 & 2, and for 3, nature checks for magical beasts, arcana about dragons, planes for fiends/elementals etc, and dungeoneering for aberations, we could get a better clue as to what could have done it. I got nobody with more than a +6 to knowledge etc. So others are better suites to that sort of task
When he gets close to town, he will dispatch a rider ahead to Arsinian with a letter giving Brett's orders and Arsinian will dispatch experts and go himself to. Gather Information and track down a team well suited to that sort of work.

I have received word that one of your old allys had been conspiring against us and is gathering forces in Brevoy. I had thought the threat was Hermia, but the nature of the danger seems more mundane. It appears that this individual believes that the council owes him a large sum of coin, and wants to be paid what he feels he is owed.
Do you know who this may be, so I can better prepare for his or her actions? It seems likely that it was someone that left before my arrival, as it would not likely be Bronwyn nor Crovan. i'd guess smendor or the first summoner, as they did not leave on the best of terms based on what I read... So if you have any ideas please let me know post haste!
be safe while you track the cultists. They are a treacherous lot, to be sure

I think that the weapons should go to any in the party that want them first, then the rest liquidated with the exception of the Scroll, Rings of Protection, Philosopher's Stone, and Incense (although that could probably be liquidated as well)
Remember - there are two types of incense.
One is fancy/expensive incense for praying - yay.
The other - if used during morning rituals - maximizes any healing spell - at the cost of using two spells on the same level. You don't have to "burn" a spell slot higher - the spell is simply maximized.
As I read it - it seems like someone could "Channel Energy" for maximum effect - but it would burn "two channels" - if that is correct.
Just something to consider.
