"And anyhow - speaking o' folks that be enemies - didn't these Ustalav folks with the red wyvern be joining up a bit with that southern lord from Brevoy - ye know - the one who hates Drake - the one that has a grudge with him, like - maybe a reason to dislike him - and that lord - what's his name - I don't remember - but he made his corporal a boss at Oleg's - and now that lad looks like he wants to quit the Brevoy lord to join up with Oleg direct - and through him us - which could make someone feel kind o' slighter - I reckon..." Brett adds thoughtfully.
"Are you referencing Squire Kaid, Brett? I was not entirely sure of that nobleman and what Robert has told me of the Kaid family and their history, I do not believe he is entirely trustworthy."

Brett Rowan |

"Well, no - never saw this Lutharo lad - but maybe Sir Dashan did - or at least - he may be knowing the lad's lineage and all that... If they both be from Ustalav and all that."
"Ry lass - I don't trust Kaid - er rather, his son - ye remember that blighter be trying to traffic slave folk - or so it seemed - or at least - he be mixed up in things and taken prisoner when he tried buying his way with a deal to the bandit lord here?"
"Anyhow - he knowed which way the wind blow - he follow us now, as the coin be good - but it's a sure bet he's got folks in town watching our work - though likely it's more probable they be north toward Oelg's - for lot's o' reasons."
"Best thing on that account is to speak to our man Drake - but he's probably busy - what with the wedding coming up and all... tricky business planning one of them things..." Brett ponders a moment.
"As fer the Ustalav lad - nay, their boss weren't Lutharo - and he sure as hell weren't Kaid - what was his name - I reckon it be, um... blast! Where did that letter go we translated - trying to remember - ah - that Ustalavian Baron - Romanov - or something like that. He be the one that runs the Scarlet Wyvern folk - and remember one of their lieutenants came to Oleg's that time - the one with the rotted face, who done try to carry off Dasha - who killed that hag Hermia - and he be all chummy with that lad Lencher and his mates? Well - what be that about? Seems too much o' a coincidence to me, eh? Could be this Lutharo be another captain under him," Brett muses.
"And, if I don't be knowing better - it seems that Lutharo - through them Ustalavians - be connected to the Southern experimenters - through Lencher - and whatever they got be planning here - it all be mixed up in this land..."
Brett ponders some more.
"Well - if and when I get that team up and running - nay doubt they can settle most of this hash easy - while we get things squared away - like getting a border patrol fixed up - and other kind of stuff like that. And maybe doing scout work south to find about this city... Lot to consider here..." he adds.
Okay gang - need to sleep myself - long day today, long day tomorrow. Hope to see more posting, though. Keep up the good work! Hopefully by now you're noticing that things are coming together. In the following "in game" year - you'll see a lot more of that - as clues are put together. Meanwhile - goodnight - and good luck!

"I too was referring to the Baron Romanov, the Scarlet Wyvern Knights. They through this Luthario are certainly connected to the cultists in the south. I was not suggesting that Dashan and Aliento would be connected to these enemies, save by similar bonds of enmity." Kae says, nodding as Brett points his attentions to the Baron.
"Are you suggesting that Kaid is aligning himself with the Baron? that would be rather dangerous for us. Even if commander Tinker remains loyal to Oleg, that is still another faction aligned against us. Where was it that we received this information?" Kae asks, concern in his newly green eyes.
"I think we need to see what this next month holds so we know what sort of resources we have at our disposal in terms of military action, fortification, and so forth. hopefully your team can make headway as we focus on keeping the city and territory in order"

”Oh – I’m not suggesting anything particular like, nay sir! Just be saying – we met up with the younger child of the Kaid House in the beginning. See – he and a bunch of folk were taken as slaves fer some purpose – what it be, we don’t know so much, or at least – if we do – I don’t recollect on it well.”
”We got to Oleg’s at first to be doing business on some sort of letters from Brevoy – to wipe out the bandits and claim the land as our’n. Kaid be one of the slaves we done picked up – and liberated – and he done say he took all the others back to Brevoy to make them free, and pocketed a nice bitty of loot, too – that he claimed was his after we rescued him!”
”But he had something odd about him – odd ways, I reckon – it were right strange the way he done acted. But I reckon he be a small fish in a big pond – trying to play folks against the other – but way out of his game, as it were… ‘Sides – we met only with the son, not the dad o’ that crew. The dad be the one that runs the House formal – the son be the one who tries to be important but ain’t so good at it.”
”But all that aside – we got be practical-like, as I see it, and so does Kae, there.”
”This place done have nearer to 12,000 souls in it – and it be well situated. Ye ain’t go against it without a goodly amount o’ troops. That means that they be needing to mobilize troops too, But they need to recruit it hard – and then they need to know what they be up against”
”I reckon they be spying us – see how tough our lads our – where are walls are – how thick they be; both real and imagined, as were – and that means we got time. Every day that goes by, they done recruit more and more – and get more and more lads – but when they get notes on what we do – that means they need to change their tactics a bit.”
”If they rushed up here hard and fast – we could hold him well at the rivers; this be a bad time o’ year to move an army north with the rivers swollen – we’d have our lads on the far banks, and when they tried to cross – we’d cut ‘em down easy.”
”They’re more likely to attack late fall, I’d reckon – as late fall means that less rains as it closer to winter – I ain’t talking early fall, but later – toward yule. Then the rivers be drier, and the grounds harder – better fer marching and all – rather then the damp in the spring and summer – and the land be more chill fer less disease fer armies then swampy wet rivers – and it give us time to prepare better a nice reception.”
He glances at the group, nodding toward the basic map of your land – which is bisected neatly by several rivers running across the horizontal axis of their southernmost border – to get a few men across the rivers would be one thing – but an army? That would require something else – bridges or boats, and either way – it could be marked and stopped fairly easily. In addition – provisions for the people to make bridges and boats would be needed while they worked. And all of that would need to be guarded while they worked - and that means that while they did that - then they couldn't do anything else at their own city, which means their own city would be un-guarded, and unproductive, while they attempted to attack you, assuming they did this.
Brett glances at Kae with a cocked eye.
”Come on, lad – ye be general – and ye know the disposition of the weather – being that ye can survive in the wild. Ye know the rough location of the enemy, the way the rivers fall and run – as ye see the map – and ye know enough on ways to stop ‘em – or ye should, as the general. And fer the rest of ye’ – well; ye know enough about basic terrain usage and tactics to formulate a working knowledge that ye don’t move armies over water without bridges or boats; neither o’ which be made without us seeing well – and the waters be heavy swelled in this time o’ year, which be a good thing. But the rivers be less swelled, if not frozen over in winter; which mean they be more likely to attack in wintertime, toward yule – which means it done give us months to get ourselves organized, though not forever, that's fer sure – even as we send out spies to find out what they be doing – and watch they ain’t doing it to us now – which be likely – as they got magic – but ye all know how to block that type o’ magic, I’d reckon.”
”Meantime – ye seen the disposition of our capital – ye know how it be laid out and all – ye know where to fortify it best – and what ye think be the best way to do it – like on how to block river crossings and use hills and cliffs that be there – and where be good crossings to put guard types and such… which be good fer trade besides – provided we control the crossings…”
Brett looks at you all, seeing you nod at his obviously rhetorical advice about combat, tactics, stratagems and planning.
”Well – what be yer thoughts on what we need doing now – hey?” he asks the group.

"Oh yeah - best lad fer information on Kaid be Drake - him and Kaid, the younger one, they don't like each other one bit, as I recall - almost killed each other... And Kaid be treating Dasha bad - she were a slave to the Ustalavians, too - and she be from Ustalav. They be able to answer different questions on that - I reckon."
"But don't fret much on that count - I got me team on board already - and they be going north to Oleg's to find out what be going on there - and they'll get to the bottom of this little tussle with House Kaid and House Tyrell - that be Drake's House formal-like, as I recall..." Brett muses, mentioning again his "Team" - the specialists he is recruiting specifically so they can go out and begin to get the answers to these questions settled.

"I do hope the team of which you speak can piece the puzzle together and uncover the major players so we may know what must be done next." She is reflective for a brief time, recollecting something in her mind before continuing.
"I remember the letter we intercepted and decoded. The Lord High Marshall of the Knights of the Scarlet Wyvern, this Baron Vlad Romanov, mentioned they had agents ensconced in Brevoy and that they would also enlist the aid of petty nobles eager for advancement. Kaid's son seems to fit this recruitment. Drake and Dasha are still in Saravale but have plans to return to Oleg's very soon. Should we call them in and ask them some questions? There is also the issue of Mak Morn and Henry Ironhorse and their silence since leaving for the Spider's Nest. We need to send people out to find them."Okay, slightly confused as to the timing of the Council meeting and whether Drake and Dasha are still in the capital. I just presumed they were for the time being. Sorry if this is incorrect.

Actually, you aren’t confused – you’re spot on. Technically Drake and Dasha are still in the capital – just down in the “village” – they are getting ready to return to Oleg’s with Gragakh – who is ready to ride back with them. It should be noted – during your time south – Gragakh has taken a mount of his own – it is also a wolf – but it is actually a somewhat smaller size then average… Gragakh's tiny! He has been speaking to Drake about plans - you have the impression that the three of them have their own ideas on what to do - but they will also be happy to talk to you about their plans, if you ask them.
You do not know who is in your nation, as a spy for Romanov – and even less – who you can trust, or not. Clearly there are likely spies – but given the time frame of Romanov’s letter – it may be that you defeated the spies very recently, though it is also possible that there are more then these cultists. Or they may not be connected to each other at all.
”Well, Ry lass – it may be that team I be talking on could even be stillborn. I be setting up shop – and not even a damn word on any be interested in joining. Oh well – maybe it all be fer the best – folks got lots to do – this project might not be the best thing right now,” he says with a shrug.
”Fer now – I’d like get the fundamentals in place – as it were – so then we can get things going fast and direct. That ain’t happened yet – though I wish it would. I want things to be situated, and well and good – we got a lot o’ stuff cooking, but nay real results – as of yet. Sooner there be results – the better it be, I reckon.” he adds with a sigh.
”We got new lads in town – and we got land to mark and conquer – and we got lots to do… and not many folks be looking to do much,” he adds.
”That reminds me – what exactly did ye find down in the town,” Brett says turning to Isani and Arasmes.
Isani and Arasmes – you guys do find stuff important – but because of the fire and stuff – it will need a Perception check with an assist. The better the roll – the better the finding. As soon as that is tossed up – you’ll know more on that.

Or, If you plan to speak to this woman who perhaps may have some information on the Scarlet Wyvern, I would like to go as well. However, as you are the master of these lands, I will leave it to your discresion. If you would rather I go as an escort to those who would catalog your territories, I would do that as well.
then to the rest of the council.
Naturally, I would welcome your suggestions as well. As master Rowan has stated, there is so much for you to do. I only wish to go were I can be of the most help.

"Your offer of assistance is appreciated and noted, Mister Dross. The woman, Dasha, of whom we speak, is currently in the old fishing village of our capital with her betrothed Robert Tyrell. Dasha is an unusual woman and is not comfortable with nor trusting of strangers so I would not send you to face her alone until formal introductions can be made and an acquaintance struck. However, we shall send forth a messenger into town and request their company in this meeting. You may certainly remain present to listen and share any pertinent information." Dain, Isani posted earlier on the province board and rolled Perception of 22. You may have missed the posting.
Just caught the mishap on my part, the adjustment has been made. Your findings are noted - anyone can make a Knowledge Nature check - via the stipulations on your board.
If you are able to deduce what you can from this creature - more notes will be forthcoming.

Isani Isu |

Isani faces Brett and begins to disclose what she and Arasmes had discovered in the building owned by the cultists.
"We were met by eight of their followers who seemed dangerous but also confused and not functioning in the proper way. We appeared to be on the verge of getting through to them when another came out from the building - the one left in charge -- his name was "Smyth", a false name of course, which he admitted to. He was a cunning creature and while he spoke to us in conciliatory, friendly fashion he had ordered one of his men to set the building ablaze, but not before "Smyth" inserted a knife up into his brain, ending himself before we could question him. The Foreign Ambassador and I summoned two elementals -- one to put out the fire and the other to carry the smoke far from Saravale. One guard perished inside the building possibly due to the blast and fire. We discovered alchemical solutions in clay jars and they seemed to have blown apart like bombs. All the scrolls and documents contained within the building were destroyed except for one page untouched by the blaze which had a scrap of paper attached with information regarding creatures -- an insect indigenous to the deep deserts in the south west of Osirion, closer to Mwangi. Also inside the chamber, we discovered 18 glass cages, 6 inches deep, 12 inches high and 1 foot wide containing 3 inches of sand and tiny, scorpion-like creatures. All but one perished and I undertook healing so it could live and be further examined. We surmised the creatures were important to the cultists or why else would they seek to destroy them all. I have compiled a report and have it here for you all to read. It seems these creatures were forced into the skulls of individuals and used to steal the will of their hosts, turning them into a sort of mindless slave, open to suggestions of the master. Councilman Rowan you may read the findings for yourself." Handing over the report to the Holbyt with a small respectful bow.
The creature is a small Vermin type creature and is carnivorous. It goes into another creature, feasting on its flesh like a maggot. However, it should be noted that if these tiny creatures are deliberately forced into the skull, typically through the ear, sometimes the eye, then the creature will typically burrow its way inwards toward the brain, chewing through the ear canal until it reaches the brain’s cerebral cortex, then burrowing deeper until is able to wrap around the base of the cortex.
There, the tiny scorpion-like creature will continue to gnaw and feast on the brains electronic impulses – it takes power from electric energy and it can gain energy from electricity.
However, it should be noted that a victim, if it is so bonded by one of these creatures, will become extremely open to suggestion. This victim, or host creature, will then be forced to bind all of its free will to the suggestions of the first creature that it comes in contact with.
In short, it is believed that these scorpion creatures have proto-psychic tendencies which can override the mind of a host creature. This power is done by strangling off the ability to reason and devours the part of the brain relating to free will. These wild insects have been bred, specifically for the purpose to be forced into the cranium of victims so that they bond with the brain of said victims and so that the victims are left open to suggestion.
A victim, even if they are so bonded, may be able to resist the suggestion, possibly. But if so, the scorpion-like beast that binds itself to the brain will simply constrict tighter and cause the victim pain.
Once the victim has been Bonded by the first creature it sees, then each time the victim decides to go against decision that is contrary to the will of the master, then the victim must make a Willpower Save – DC of 20 and they may resist that action. However, they must suffer 1d4+1 HP damage each time they resist. This will continue to be done until the creature is dead or the victim. More on how the creature can be killed when it is bonded to a victim may be discovered but not without appropriate research. Conducting this research on the living creature will take time and effort.
Discovering the remaining victims is imperative as is discovering a method of curing them of these parasites.

Brett Rowan |

"Bloody hell..." Brett mutters, reading over your report and sipping some tea.
Thanks Sanny, appreciate it," he adds, thinking a bit.
"Well - I'll get to work on this right away - of course; but the thing I reckon next is - how many o' them can be here? Do ye know their breeding patterns? I mean to say - they be native to south deserts - is it possible that these cultists take their lads and put them bugs in them to get them to follow after them all, eh?"
"They may be got what they brought - or they may be breeding them on the sly to fill up the entire town - could be even now peppered with spies and such."
"Any thinking on how to get 'em out - once they be in? I mean to say - if we got a lad here that got one stuck inside - then what happens to 'em? What if one o' our mates got one o' them in it - how do we get 'em out? They be doomed, or nay? What can be done on that?" he asks the group.
"That said - what do we do with this information next?" he asks the group.

Otherwise we could possibly use either the scroll or rock you mentioned having acquired in order to resurrect one of the cultists. I had said that i wanted to have men keep tabs on the camp, way back when, and compile lists of those acting there, and that are involved with the gang. So there should be records of citizens that regularly visit, although it may take time to fully sift through those records, we should be able to use them to pick out any survivors of the cultist and try to find them, in order to question them. Big Brother was watching, after all.

Kae –
You do indeed have such a listing of the cultists – specifically the living ones in the very camp your men were watching. Remember – formally only two of the “townies” are now dead. Their leader; this “Smyth” fellow – and the man who Arasmes spoke to – and had to rush back inside the building to set it ablaze are the only ones dead. One by the explosion - the other by suicide.
The other six men are are in your custody – they are alive – but they are currently not able to talk to answer questions, or they are unwilling to. All they do is stare blankly with a confused look on their face, as if they under the control of some sort of drug or spell - though you suspect it is the same scorpion-like creature mentioned in Isani's reports.
It is Brett’s opinion that – based on the Intel. from Isani - that these people may have those bugs implanted in to or on the brain. If that is true – then the real issue is that to get the bugs OFF the brain, you’d literally have to cut open the victim's skull, and try to get to the brain itself – and to do that you'd need to remove a carnivorous creature from the brain (not unlike tearing a large tick from your flesh), and pray that your surgery doesn’t kill the person outright – or scramble the brain in a way that would prevent information from being taken; never mind an infection that could occur later.
Brett’s question seems valid; how do you get these creatures away or out of the person without hurting the person itself? Because – if you can’t do that – then the person will seemingly be under the control of the person who imprinted them.
Isani already mentioned the fact the men didn’t even try to stop anyone – or save themselves – once their chief was dead and no longer around to give them orders. They just sort of shuffled around like robots – and would have died, if Arasmes and Isani had not taken care of them by dragging them down to safety.
Point is – you have a few live victims – but you don’t know how to liberate them. At least – not yet…

Brett turns to you and looks at you with a cocked eye.
”Lad – I'm glad to hear your voice on these matters, that's true. But as the general of what army we got here - well; what be our next military move. I mean, just a suggestion - the best thing is – as I see it – is fer you to ride out and try to find our mate Mak Morn and Ironhorse – they be toward that spider cave, I reckon… and nay word on them. Ye think ye can do that – that is – find them and get ‘em back safe?” he asks.
Brett ponders a moment.
”Also – what be yer opinion of the position of the land here – our defenses and stuff – what do ye think we ought to do – what be best, eh? Where’d ye want to put things like watchtowers and all that? Ye be a tough customer – got any plans on hard action? Also – what be yer plans on yer barony and such? That be on our eastern flank – close to that blamed cave – I’d like to be having some protection out that way – ye close to getting a bite on things?” he adds.
”Oh yeah – one other thing – and this goes to the lot o’ ye – even ye,” Brett says, glancing at the diseased newcomer with the extra arms…
”That unit I be putting together – I want it up and running soon as can be. So – if ye got any names fer the hat – as it were – feel free to send ‘em my way soon. I need bloody interviews to start fast – we got a mess o’ hash to deal with here; make no mistake!” he adds.
Still waiting to leave – one of the people who is heading south with us in “real life” is flying to DC first – and we’re picking him up after his plane lands – which hasn’t happened – so I have nothing to do but sit around and wait – except, of course – posting! More on that front soon… and I’ll be answering any “in-game” questions for a while yet – well; at least until we leave – which may be in the next hour or so. Either way – if you got ‘em – toss ‘em up. I’m eager to see as much action as possible. I am now working on a post for Arasmes’s thread – and answering any questions from Mister Dross – if you guys toss them up, that is. If not, and you don't see anything else from me - that is because I missed you via the writing. Sorry about that - I am trying, but I don't know formally when we will leave. Meanwhile, I’ll be back late Sunday night, and we can go from there.

waiph |

I'll be back in action on monday/tuesday, as i'm getting on a plane on sunday to the east coast, so i've been pretty busy the past week. just to mention
kae sent out a message to oleg's first thing when the others went out, asking for news on the men. They should have returned after 4 or 5 days. whenever they get back and let me know what's going on, or if they have no response or are not back in 5 days, then we ride! but i'm giving them 5 days from the time people went south after the cultists. so whenever my messenger arrives, i'll know what o do about Henry and Mak! that said, the people that went after the cultists should have been back within three or four days, so i guess the messanger should have arrived the day after they get back or something. =]
so i'm waiting on that.
also sorry about not having your bloody guy to interview, but I'm trying to deal with getting out of here for my trip.
totally haven't had time to re-work my barony at all yet, or finalize things. still need to get my ruler, and finish my warden build. were you going to be able to get levels and such for the ruler? Silver Kobold Oracle of Apsu, some kind of acolyte to Grymm's sis or something? thought you said you'd get that one out, I can do the final fleshing out and book work after i get it's levels.
now to write the In-character responses and stuff

"To be completely honest, Brett, we need to get out finances settled. If we can't pay for watch-towers or afford to pay our soldiers, then we don't really have anything we can do to defend ourselves. But as you said, now is not really the time to attack a city or move troops, so we have time. Having out Barons situated around the capital keeping an eye on things will help give advance warning for attacks."
"As soon as I have the budget for it, I would like to establish an outpost at the smuggler's cave where we raided the caravan to act as an outpost to give advance warning for forces moving in that area. We should also build a system of roads as soon as possible as they are inexpensive and can greatly improve communication and commerce amont our baronies and the capital. While it is not my place to dictate how we build up our respective lands, some kind fo military presence would be prudent."

This is all rather disturbing.
Looking at the creature, he ponders whether he's seen its like before.
Knowledge Nature 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Then turning to the general,
If I may, sir, perhaps as councilman Rowan suggested, you should send a group to this "spider cave". I would volunteer to see to this task, if you wish. Or if you would prefer, I could help you question these prisoners if you like. I have learned a thing or two about scaring information out of thugs.
There are a great many things to have on one's mind in this time of crisis, and I would like to assist. As for funding, I have some gems and such I would gladly give to this nation If you and the other council members would allow me.
He bows.
I wish only to help.
Then he turns to Lia, and with a stern expression
What say you, Lia, friend of wolves? Would you care to ride to this cave and investigate?
Yillim still has a good chunk of gold in the form of gems, and is willing to donate it to the kingdom to help pay for whatever upkeeps he can help with.

Isani Isu |

Isani listens as Yillim speaks of scaring the information out of the followers.
"Mister Dross, the seven men who survived the blast and fire are safely held in the barracks. They are currently disoriented and we have no idea whether they have been inserted with these tiny parasites but I would hazard a guess and say they have been. If they have, then no matter of learned interrogation or scare tactics will benefit us or them for their will is not their own and forcing them to go against their master's orders will lead to pain and possible death. The best solution is to find a safe way to remove these parasitic creatures from their hosts. Perhaps then we may simply ask these men questions and they may answer us without the need for forceful interrogation. We cannot forget they are innocent people who have been caught up in the lies and deception propagated by the late al-Kazeem and his cultists. I do not believe they had any idea the Black Kota would take away their ability to think and act of their own free will. Quite a tragedy and one we as a Council cannot allow to occur again."
"So, we must learn more about these tiny scorpion-like creatures, and apply that knowledge without delay and cure these innocents."

Ariarh Kane |

"To be completely honest, Brett, we need to get out finances settled. If we can't pay for watch-towers or afford to pay our soldiers, then we don't really have anything we can do to defend ourselves. But as you said, now is not really the time to attack a city or move troops, so we have time. Having our Barons situated around the capital keeping an eye on things will help give advance warning for attacks."
"As soon as I have the budget for it, I would like to establish an outpost at the smuggler's cave where we raided the caravan to act as an outpost to give advance warning for forces moving in that area. We should also build a system of roads as soon as possible as they are inexpensive and can greatly improve communication and commerce among our baronies and the capital. While it is not my place to dictate how we build up our respective lands, some kind of military presence would be prudent."
There was never a moment of stillness in the capital. One issue after another and a responsibility for a great number of people living and working in Saravale.
"I have listened to all that has been brought to the attention of the Council and read Isani's report. Kae, facing her councilman and "brother", there were a number of valuable items found on the deceased cultists which we can sell and raise some much needed gold to start building necessary defensive structures and alike and pay the wages of our militia. To survive and prevail, the town, Keep and baronies require protection and we should create strongholds for it seems our enemy or enemies are clever and will not stop. I agree, roads connecting the baronies to the capital are imperative, as well as connecting the capital to our allies in Western Brevoy. The situation with Breyovian spies connected to the Ustalavians is concerning and I am hoping Robert Tyrell may shed some light on the Kaid heir."
"Now Brett, Isani, we need to examine this surviving parasite and find a group of individuals with the collective knowledge, time and resources to tell us how to break their hold on their hosts. If the community became aware of this manipulation, havoc and chaos would ensue so please be mindful of whom you speak to in regard to this matter. Only those that need to know should for the time being. I do not enjoy keeping information from the people but I have their best interests at heart and so I must presently."
Addressing Yillim,
"Yillim, your offer of aid is accepted. Your specific offer of financial assistance is generous and I ask that you wait until we determine how much gold we have after selling the current items in our vault. I would like to clear those items, except for the most valuable items such as the scroll, Philosopher's Stone and crystals, within the month. If you must go without some of your wealth, we will compensate you once we have refilled our coffers. If you'd like, we can draw up a legal contract so it is fair and above board."

Corlia Lyimro |

Then he turns to Lia, and with a stern expression
What say you, Lia, friend of wolves? Would you care to ride to this cave and investigate?
"I will ride with you to the Spider's Nest, if my Lady wishes it, indicating Ariarh, Yet two people and two wolves do not make a force. We require others versed in caves and underground exploration. If this Mak Morn and Ironhorse are in trouble, it is best we attack the enemy in good numbers." Revion, her grey wolf, huffs beside her. These new friends had mighty troubles and now he and his sister had become involved and invested.

Yillim Dross |

Bowing to Ariarh,
Baroness, I have no need of contracts. In our lands, among honest folk , of which I can say I now number myself, a clasping of hands is sufficient. I am putting faith in your nation, and your council, and have no need of legalities.
Turning back to Lia
Indeed you are correct. If this place is dangerous, a number of others would also be welcome.
He pauses for a moment, and scratches his head, absently using both his left hands for the task. His eyes glint with a kind of fervor barely kept in check, excited at the prospect of being of use. Then, to the council,
Are there others that would go to this cave as well? Perhaps a marshal of sorts, or a few of the guard? I know little of your forces, but I suspect noone would so brazenly attack your capital, and you could spare a few men...

Arasmes ibn'Fayad |

Arasmes is silent during most of the exchange before finally saying The first thing, I think, is to get together a list of our resources in general. We need to make an audit of not only our funds and materials but also our population and people. It would be a great help to our ability to organize if we had such a census. For instance, perhaps there is someone among the populace skilled enough in medicine and healing to attempt such an extraction of these parasites. Perhaps it could be done magically through someone with divine arts. We have some of this information but I think we need more. We do too much ourselves and do not rely upon the people to do what needs to be done enough. That said though, to the specific points at hand. The idea of roads to the baronies is a good one, especially one needs to be created to Oleg's as from there he has access to a trading route already to help with expenses. Also, are we going to continue to call it Oleg's? Have they not come up with a name for their town? I know that they have been of great help so far but have we made formal alliance with any of the nobles of Brevoy, specifically Lord Esserian? If he is still in the area I would like the chance to speak with him. As Foreign Ambassador, I believe I may be able help with securing an agreement with him and his father for the nation. In addition, I think it will be time in the coming months to begin to send emissaries south to some of the realms of the River Kingdoms in order to secure trade routes and allies there as well. One major reason for this is to perhaps secure aid and assistance for destroying the cultists town. The River Kingdoms have few laws but the fifth of the six River Freedoms is that slavery is not tolerated and is stamped out mercilessly. I believe we may be able to secure aid from one of the Kingdoms, specifically Mivon perhaps where lies a large population of displaced Aldori Swordlords I am told, in order to destroy the slavers. I also wish to send delegations to your homeland of Artume, Lady Ariarh as well as the Elven Kingdom of Hymbria and also to Uringen, a land renowned for its Alchemists. What do you think?
Once any answers are given, Arasmes continues.
As some of you know, in the coming months I intend to found a city of learning and knowledge upon the ruins of the volcanic island to the south. My hope is that I can turn that place of suffering and evil to a good and noble purpose. I just wanted to formally declare that you are all welcome at any time and I look forward to building relationships with each of your new societies. To that end, I would propose we develop some sort of network in order to relay information quickly between the towns. Perhaps simple signal towers could be built and manned to relay a call for aid. My knowledge of such things is limited. There are magical effects that could be created as well for such things but sometimes a more mundane solution is the most efficient.

Brett Rowan |

Brett is munching an apple and offers his opinions.
”Hmm – like the idea of a census, but so soon? Mayhap we do that at the end o’ the year – when the kingdom be settled in a bit – and baronies entrenched a bit better. Taking a census is a good plan – for taxes and such – and it can also figure on lot’s o’ useful things. But, well – we do it now – in about the end o’ the month we may as well do it again, as things will change a lot once the baronies got their ground broke proper as were…” he says glancing at Arasmes.
”I also like allies, too – as fer Delain? He done already left before we got back – more’s the pity – he got reports that nasty folk be hitting western Brevoy in the northlands – and had to go back and take care o’ things. But we already got work done on the front o’ getting some contracts done with him – specifically trade deals with me, Ry and Kae – we did that near a month ago – or I reckon ye’d be on board with it – but part o’ the deal was we’re supposed to send lads up to his place in about a month or so and get an embassy fixed proper – maybe when we send ‘em – we can send an Ambassador from yer barony to see if ye can hop on with the deal, too? If ye’re interested, that is.”
”Delegations take a bit to send, though – and may be costly – as they’ll likely need guards and such, and we don’t got our borders watched right – though I like the plan quite a lot – it may need a bit o’ time before it can really take shape, I reckon.”
”As fer the rest o’ the River Kingdom’s themselves? Well… lad; ye’re a southern one – and ye don’t know much about what be going on in the northlands, I reckon – not lately anyhow – just on what local tales may get circulated south now and then – but as fer the rest of the “River Kingdom” – why… going on those tales may not be the best way to know ‘em – I mean, I do like the enthusiasm, damn sure – but, the thing is – there’s quite a bit o’ strange mixing up going about – I reckon them folk that told ye about all these other places never even heard o’ our trouble with the Ustalavian hash – nor the southern attackers – nor the whole deal with the silver kobolds… I mean to say – there could be pretty big differences from the rumors ye hear at the local taverns – not that ye’re notes are all wrong, mind ye – just recommending ye proceed with a bit o’ caution there – feel things out a bit before diving in on what be really going on in the nations around us – specifically the River Kingdoms. Could be that they be a bit… more changed, then ye know about, that’s all. And using what skills ye got to rustle up news on that count first be a good plan,” he adds with another munch on the apple.
”Meantime – like yer plan on the knowledge thing – but I worry ‘bout ye, lad. Ye’re kind o’ at the doorstep fer real trouble – if them southern basterds ride north and all… Ye got plans on fixing up the land and terrain fer protection? Granaries on the island be a good start, I reckon – fer food, if ye get sieged – and maybe sending down some militia on loan from the main kingdom with a guard – just till ye get the borders protected be a good plan. As it is – yer barony got a lake around it – which be a nice big “moat” – but once ye start building there – there ain’t much arable land fer yer folk – I recommend we send out some troops there – just to keep an eye things – make sure ye don’t have any trouble – ‘course – that means we got a bit less funds fer the capital – but I reckon it be worth it. Also – Kae here wants an outpost at the smuggler’s cave – good plan indeed – but can we afford that now, too? And if so – what be the priority – I say Arasmes first – the watchtower at the cave can come – but fer now he just station a few likely lads with some basic supplies at that cave, it be fair defensible fer a time, but nothing too much until we get the resources; but sure by the end o' the year! Then toss ‘em up. Anyone object?” Brett adds, looking around the table.
He then glances over to Dross – and ponders a bit.
”I agree them folk be overdue – best send some lads – but I reckon that some who be sent are handy with solving clues and such – I don’t figure it being a straight fight – or at least – don’t hope fer it – last time it were ugly. But when whoever goes to go there gets there – they need to keep an eye on things good – and be careful not to mess up what they find. That could fluster the whole operation – as is. Meantime – I got a few names in a hat o’ folks back at my place that could go along – hope at least they got a way o’ cracking clues and mysteries, and such… But I reckon they do…” he adds.
”Anyhow – yeah – that Oleg thing? I mean to say – it be his land formal – he joined with us – but I reckon he’s open to new names – if ye offer him any – give him a few, he’ll likely pick the one that sounds the likeliest, if ye understand me?”
Brett then smacks his head with his hand.
”Damn – them lads I be recruiting to crack mysteries - they may be already on loan to Ry – she needs them to look over them buggy things – bleh! Hate bugs! Spiders are the worst… even so – the folk I be getting to solve mysteries may be helping Ry, and not the caves now - Still, Ry – what do ye say – ye want the new folk at the cave – or at the bodies looking the bugs? The bug thing be worth seeing, I reckon – but then again – I’m also wondering what happened to ol’ Mak Morn and our good buddy Ironhorse. Still – if anyone got a good way of deciding – I know ye will,” he concludes with a sage nod.
Then – he stretches his hands over his head – and yawns, waiting to hear if anyone else has anything to add.

Arasmes ibn'Fayad |

Ah my mistake then about the River Kingdoms. It seemed these were facts of general knowledge insofar as the Kingdoms remain somewhat the same. If there is such upheaval that the realms themselves are different than what I have heard, then indeed there is much to worry about. I plan on sending delegations anyway to see what can be discovered about them as we need to know more and develop good relations with the River Kingdoms if we wish to prosper as well. As far as my future towns proximity to the southern slave town, that is unfortunate and I hope to find allies to wipe it's blighted presence from the map at some point in the near future. For now, additional guards and troops will be welcome. I will say that once this magical enclave I intend upon building gets moving...well let's just say attacking a city of magic users, craftsman, engineers and scholars would not be the best idea. For instance I have already identified a local dwarf with some expertise in siege weaponry to design defenses for Calignis. It is looking promising.

Ariarh Kane |

Between Arasmes and Brett they could fill a room and heads with a thousand questions.
"I could send a letter to my family in Artume, Arasmes, and gauge the situation there before a delegation is sent. However, in theory I do like your suggestion regarding accessing more allies across the River Kingdoms to put an end to this southern, expanding slavery trade. But we must be cautious for others may try to usurp our lands and control. One thing I have learned over my time here is that allies are not always what they seem," silently referencing Hermia and this unknown old ally who even now raises armies to overthrow them.
"Brett, I think your special department should concentrate on the vermin situation. It is imperative we find out how to cure the hosts of these parasites and sooner the better. Lia and Yillim have offered to ride to the Spider's Nest with a contingent of others versed in cave exploration and I think we are covered there."
Remembering something she turns back to Arasmes, "You are right, Arasmes, the Council take on too many duties and responsibilities and we spend much time outside of the capital. It would be good to have a ready supply of community members we can delegate and entrust tasks to. Please arrange that soon, Foreign Ambassador."
"So, I take it we are all riding to the Spider's Nest to locate Mak Morn and Ironhorse? Well except for Brett's special department who will discover, I am hoping, a cure for these little will-power sucking parasites. By the way, Brett, who is in charge of this unit when you are not in town? I would like to be introduced to these folk before we leave Saravale."
Then remembering Kae's concerns regarding the wages of the militia, "Are our armed forces paid up for the year and still loyal to us? Can we secure their services by other means while we convert commodities into coin?"

"Arasmes, the lake around the island is quite a good defense mechanism if you remember the previous guardian, the dire crocodile. Mayhap you could employ such a "guardian" of your own? Not necessarily a dire crocodile but something allied to you."

Yillim Dross |

"Brett, I think your special department should concentrate on the vermin situation. It is imperative we find out how to cure the hosts of these parasites and sooner the better. Bowing to the Baroness, Yillim places one of his left hands on the hilt of his khopesh, and brings his right fist to his chest.
We shall indeed ride to the cave, then, at your order.Suppressing a smile, Yillim looked to the half-elf who had been for the most part silent, no doubt pondering the importance of this all, and taking in the hustle and bustle of the council chambers, chaotic as it was. His skin literally twitched with excitement, finally a purpose!. He thought back to the days of his wasted youth, spent wandering the sands of the south, looking for "adventure", or rather, opportunity to gain coin, with barely a thought for who he was with or the livelihood of his allies or those previous owners of said coin. This was the new start he so yearned for, and a feeling welled within his chest at the thought of putting his carcass to a good purpose. A small start perhaps, but this was the beginning of being part of a community.
Turning to Kae, the one the baroness called "brother",
You are the general of this nation of Praxis, yes? Perhaps you have men in mind to come with us to this expedition at the cave. I suggest you take the lead here, as you know your men, and no doubt are versed in the ways of war. I await your call as to when we leave.
Clutching the pomel of the weapon at his side and adjusting the shield strapped to his back, he turns to Corlia,
Are you ready, Lia friend of wolves? It seems we have our first "quest" as it were. and with somewhat stifled chuckle
I hope our brothers don't mind caves.

Corlia Lyimro |

Lia continued watching and listening inside the meeting chamber, occasionally looking down at her wolf Revion who was becoming restless enclosed within walls and this small room. In low wolf speak she says to him,
Her attention is caught by Yillim addressing her directly,
"I am ready, more than man Yillim. We will need supplies and gear for cave exploration. I do not believe Blackfang will be happy inside tight cavern passageways for he is too large."
Directing her question to the Lady leader, "Ariarh, err Lady, how tight are the passageways and ceilings of the Spider's Nest? Can the wolves travel below without distress?"

Ariarh Kane |

Ariarh watches the interplay between Lia and Yillim. Even saying their names in her head made her want to chuckle at the tongue-twister.
"There is a drop down to the floor of the cave and then are tight crawl spaces, if my memory serves me right. And there is also water down there, a lake of sorts, and a fell creature which swims and guards it. Mayhap not the best place for wolves."

Brett Rowan |

"Forces be paid up fer about another month - until we pay them again - which better be soon - Kae's got the notes on that. Meantime - Ras' - I ain't too worried about ye being attacked specifically - but being seiged. I mean - if ye want to eat - how ye going to feed a whole town o' folk? If ye don't got the food fer them - then what are ye going to do? And if ye send fer help - all it needs is magic users on their side to sink the boats - then what? Nay - best thing fer it is to stop them from coming - but if I be right - then we likely got at least several months before that happens, hopefully."
"And Ry - if ye be asking who my second-in-command be? Well - truth to tell - I hadn't got that far ahead - fer now I just be reviewing applicants - some of them seem promising - but I'll keep ye posted on that front."

"I can't say for sure, Brett. And who's to say there isn't another one guarding the black altar ... We need to be prepared."

Ka'etil Malas'rae |

To Ariarh and Arasmes conversation abotu eliciting aid, Kae adds "To be sure, some "Allies" are not friends at all. From what I've heard of the nation of city states, it seems to be a less than stable area, and informing that there is a fledgling nation coming into being may be an invitation for another invasion. If we contact them from a position of slightly greater strength and stability, we will not only have more to bargain with, but be less of an inviting target."
"Now I do believe that the Serpent was destroyed, although my memory of that battle is admittedly somewhat hazy," taking a moment, Kae recalls having leapt upon the creature as others attacked it with magic and such..."but there could be another creature having taken it's place. Now loath am I to miss out on a fight, I worry that the entire council taking this trip, and leaving the Capital once again lacking leadership could be dangerous."
I believe Drake is still around, right?
"I would be more comfortable if some of us remained here to oversee matters. I can continue to manage things, but I am sure Clari and Garith along with a small contingent of riders will join. Arasmes, once you get your letters written, it will take time to receive any response, so you will likely to be at liberty."
"I can afford to send a small contingent south, but we are certainly in dire need of income to keep the soldiers paid properly for the coming months. Hopefully the taxes on our Baronies will help with that."

Brett steeples his fingers together – considering the points Kae brought up, and others.
”Kae lad – I like yer policy on moving from strength before ambassadors be sent out. But I reckon we got time – I also got a hunch that pretty soon months will feel like days around here – and we can do it, in a few months or so – nay doubt Ras didn’t be meaning he wanting such folks be sent out at the end o’ the week – hell, or even month. But we ought to start preparing for it, though. Ye know – for in the coming months – once we get things feeled out.”
”Now – Drake be here – sure as hell; but here be the thing – I don’t reckon that leaving the folks alone again so soon be the best o’ policies. Tell ye what – why don’t them that wants to check out the cave volunteer – I’ll stay back with Drake to keep an eye on things – not to mention the new crew I’m getting set up.”
”Then – while them that heads north handles that – I’ll stick around here to keep a familiar face about – and have someone the new crew be reporting to can be familiar with. Sound good to everyone?” he asks.
So – here’s the straight skinny: for those of you who want to go to the Spider Cave to go exploring – you are free to. Volunteer by hopping on the “Combat Thread” – oh yeah; there will be blood…
Meanwhile – those who want to stick around Saravale can social RP on the main thread – and those of you who have ALT characters in the S.I.D. – we’ll keep things rolling there – hope to see you soon – but just let me know when I can see you and where – and who is going where – on each post. In the next few days – the good times will roll!
One last thing – I’ll need a basic list of what buildings you intend to build in the first month of your Barony – that’s actually more important to me then the Council at this point – because it will effect what happens in terms of “story” – for example; as Arasmes is building a Wizard’s Tower – he’ll be getting different news then if he built a bunch of houses and a dump. And Ry is getting different news with a temple instead of a series of Watchtowers and a barracks. That will make a difference to social RP.

Arasmes ibn'Fayad |

Brett is correct that I did not expect to send out delegations immediately. These things need to be handled delicately. Also the River Kingdoms can be treacherous but unless the entire area has descended into anarchy there are several kingdoms that could be useful allies to us. I plan to send to these places first. Places like Artum for example. In any case, it will not be occurring until I get suitable delegations to send. I am in the process of doing so but it will be a while before I can have a diplomatic corps of sufficient strength and reliability.
Now as to the Spider Cave to the north...I would like to go as I think that Caliphana and I could be of help but I am of the same mind that I would not like to leave the city without council...again. If no one else from the council goes then I will, perhaps Isani would be willing to accompany me as well. If others are planning on going then I will remain here as I can continue work on stabilizing Saravale and also finding those who wish to journey south to Calignis. I leave that in the hands of the council as a whole depending upon who wishes to go where.

Ariarh Kane |

"Arasmes, I will stay in the capital and will attend to any matters or problems faced by our community. Lia can assist you, as well as Revion. Yillim has volunteered his services. If Isani joins you and mayhap some of the guards, then I think you have a sufficient detail to sojourn to the Spider's Nest. Remember we also have the Anumi and Isani is adept at commanding them. If you require other resources, please let me know."

Isani Isu |

Excellent. In which case we should leave as soon as possible. They have been gone too long and as such we need to make haste.
Turning to Isani he says سيكون من دواعي سروري ركوب الخيل مع لكم مرة أخرى
** spoiler omitted **
Isani bows before Lady Ariarh and hearing Arasmes' words in their native tongue, smiles gently and blushes.

Ka'etil Malas'rae |

"Patty is indeed rather distraught. As soon as you can, please send us here word, so i can tell her the news." Kae asks those leaving.
"I shall contact Clari. I she'll be helpful if she is willing to go, I'm sure."

Yillim Dross |

After listening to the words of all the council members Yillim nods. Adjusting his cloak and hood, he comports himself in a manner more bundled as he makes for the door of the council building. He smiles to himelf, and glances back at the Corlia and Revion, motioning them to follow.
I shall gather my things then, and Blackfang an I will wait at the gates for our journey, and thank you for this opportinuty. I will do my best to assist the others at this task you have set before us.
Outside, he checks his gear, opening up backs and checking to make sure he has all he came with. Then, seeing everything in order, he goes over the straps on Blackfang's armor, making sure they are tight, but not so tight as to restrict his friend's circulation. Blackfang bumps bim firmly with his large head, and Yillim stifles a chuckle at the large wolfs gesture.
We will be off soon, friend. he says and scratches Blackfang roughly behind his ear, waiting for the others.
off to the combat thread!

Lia sees the gesture to follow and with a quirked eyebrow concedes and chuckles under her breath. More than man would lead. I shall allow it this time.
Exiting with a nod to Ariarh and the remaining council, she follows Yillim out and then with Revion by her heels, heads to her own chamber to collect her gear. She stops in her rush to send a quick prayer to Old Dead Eye. The Spider's Nest did not sound like an easy cave to traverse. They would need to combine their strengths and wits and pray that the men who travelled there from their town would still be alive. Need to ensure we have enough ropes, she mentally reminds herself. Brett Rowan mentioned an Undead serpent ... Let us hope we do not find any such creature waiting for us, guarding this cave. Yet Lia knew no amount of hoping could change a course if it were already set.
Moves to combat thread.

In the dim recesses of your Council Chamber your party has gathered to consider best their options now.
During the foray to the small tunnel from whence the spider cave was first discovered you had found dark markings and things of ill-repute that disquieted you all.
Your companions – who you had searched for – where found in one of the deeper chasms – a tunnel craved in solid rock to lead into the bowels of the stone below.
And so it was that you each descended, to find the bodies of your slain allies – their limbs and flesh hewed by many dark strokes of wicked blades.
With swift and action and bold purpose you had managed to seize their corpses and so swiftly return to the surface.
The thousand grim eyes of evil filth which surrounded you were trapped well beneath the stone – for as you charged forth – the elemental power called forth by your Summoner drew out servants of Rock and Stone to collapse the very walls of the stairs of said tunnel behind your desperately retreating footsteps.
You reached the surface and took forth the outriders - traveling back to the very city which was beacon to your growing nation.
When you returned all funerary rites were given to the fallen comrades who had served you well – Unless of course you want to use those potions to resurrect them – in which case, you are able to, if you so seek that choice.
Meanwhile – a breath of good news had reached your ears, even as the preparations had been started –
Good News
A special unit of investigators was established to seek answers to the riddles which plagued you all so much. That unit was successful in its first venture – and you are now confident that the Southern Cult which infiltrated your town is now eradicated – except for a few idle words in the form of mere curiosity, which – if ignored – would expire in roughly a month.
Second – the land set aside for you baronies is worked well on – and the folk on your respective lands have been working diligently on preparing the land under your instructions; even now the buildings are being designed in the way you see fit.
Third – scouts sent south have revealed that there has been no enemy activity on southern frontier. For now – it seems empty of threat – at least no threat was seen north of the entire length of the river which bisects good Arasmes’s province.
Forth – continued additions to the modest shrine to Apsu go unusually well –largely because another mysterious donations was made during your absence. No guard saw where the wealth came from – again; anonymously, almost as if it was magically sent – but it is clear that wealth was indeed deposited and is now being used to extend the boundaries of this Shrine to Apsu. This is well supported by nearly all of the kobld people – both silver and gold; though there is less support from some of the older members of the silver kobolds, not the ancient ones who were in a trance – but some of the older ones that are less pious who are with you. Even so – though they do not overly support the shrine – they certainly do not tolerate others disrespecting it.
Fifth – the people seem to take the presence of the new races with mixed opinion. Southern escaped slaves have – for the most part – made their homes in the capital; creating a more clean and distinct version of what your “tent town” used to be. Streets are now better contrived, and the citizens – though separate from your main folk – seem to do this out of cultural nuances, not any specific prejudices.
It should be noted, however – that the more “bestial” creatures (the apemen and the Yuan-ti) have not been as welcome. Many of them are seeking places that they can be comfortable. Much of the apemen prefer to live near the forests – and seek the lands of Ariarh – and possibly Brett or Kae.
The Yuan-ti are not so eager to return to the forests; preferring more cosmopolitan culture – and though they are less comfortable with the capital – they will also gravitate more to Arasmes’s terrain; or even Oleg, if he will have them (ironically they do not care for Brett – as he has taken a comrade who, to them, was like a traitor).
Therefore –
There is much afoot after your return. Your baronies are progressing as good as can be expected, and you are free to do what you wish on that account.
Specifically – roll your dice for your Economy – your DC is 35. If you succeed, you will be getting a lot of BP – if you fail, you will still be getting some loot via taxes. Taxes over 10% will actually add +1 to your Economy DC for every percentage point. Taxes under 10% will subtract 1 for 1, all the way down to 5%. If you have no taxes, or less then 5% - it will not matter. Remember, too – if you beat your DC – you will be getting quite a lot of BP. More on that can be discovered later.
This roll for your economy would occur roughly half-way through the month in “real life” – it is at this point that you are collecting everything, and by the end of the month – everything you have built is built – the first of the month, you start building your new stuff with your new BP – it won’t be finished until the end of the month, so your first 2 rolls will have the same DC for Economy, because you won’t have the new buildings finished after the first month done in time.
After that – depending on what you build, your Economy's DC goes down.
Remember, too to consider your population.
Okay – good luck – and also – check the Discussion thread for more details; including your plans for social RP each month/turn. Except a turn, and results to take more than 2 days in real life – we’re trying to get your barony, and your nation – cooking fast – so you can get back to trying to rule the world!

How does the tax thing work?
There is a system where taxes are ranked as such
None: +0 econ +1 loyalty
Light: +1 econ -1 loyalty
Normal: +2 econ -2 loyalty
Heavy: +3 econ -4 loyalty
Overwhelming: +4econ -8 loyalty
So how do these two rules interact? What's the difference between 10% and 15% in terms of consequences to the barony?
Just need to understand how the house-rules actually work before i start making decisions and rolls.
Also why is the DC now 35?
Initially it was 30+size, which is 10 more than the kingdom DC, but now it is a flat 35?

For the first in game "year" I'm making it a "Year of Jubilee" - hence, very easy, very fast, and no penalties for failing except you don't gain BP.
Basically - to determine how much income you would earn via taxes - consider the following.
An average family has 4 people; 1 wage earner.
So for every 4,000 people you have, that is 1,000 wage earners.
(You are not likely to have 4,000 people to start yet - however. Remember each little square on the map you have built on grants you a total of 250 citizens. So for every 4 little squares - that is 1,000 citizens).
Take your wage earners and give them a "take 10" on their profession check - which means they should have a total of (roughly) 15 - as they would generally be level one.
Then - consult the book for weekly earnings for a 15 - take the weekly earnings and multiply it by 4 (4 weeks in a month).
So - for example -
Profession of 15 earns the family 15 gold a week - or 60 a month.
You take 10% - or 6 gp pieces.
If you have 4,000 people; that is 1,000 Families of 4 - or a total of 1,000 GP.
This means you earn yourself a cool 600 GP.
You can earn more than that by raising the taxes by 1%, but that means your DC for BP checks goes up by +1 for every 1% you raise it.
Conversely, it goes down by -1 for every -1% you lower it.
However - you cannot lower the taxes beneath 5% to gain a benefit. That is, if you lower the taxes to 0% you still only benefit by a -5 from your BP DC.
You do not get a benefit from any of the buildings you are building on your BP roll for the first month - they are not finished.
You will however get taxes for the first month.
Don't worry about such details as "Stability" and "Edicts" now. We can do that later - after the first year is done.
Okay - hope that helps - let me know if you have any other questions.
Quick Follow Up Questions
1. Yes - this suddenly makes things like tenements very useful - at least for taxes. But only for the first year - after that; it will change very much.
2. If you have a secondary group in your town (like the land granted to Ariarh's golden kobolds) - they have their own BP - so can Ariarh tax them?
Of course! They are still formally her subjects/vassals - they still owe tax - even though their own BP is distinct from hers.
3. Meanwhile - while I save up BP for something special - like a cool fortress or something - what else can I do with the money on the sly?
Good question (why thank you) - you can use that money to create armies - troops - and even special agents.
More on that later - for the first month - remember - your Base DC for Economy is not effected by the buildings you are making now - they aren't finished yet.
You are likely to loose that roll - so keep that in mind for taxes.
The NEXT month - those buildings are finished, and it will improve your Economy Roll.
REMEMBER: This strategy is only good the first year - after that Loyalty and Stability will be very important! So don't spend all your loot on just Economic Buildings - keep in mind that by the end of the year, when things go back to "normal" you will need to have to remember that Loyalty and Stability will matter.
What about the kingdom as a whole? The capital?
For now - same rules apply - however - you guys have to vote on what they build in the capital. More on that to come.
What about taxes to the capital?
Ah yes - good point. Remember - 20% of all your taxes for the first three months go to Saravale to build with. So take that into consideration when you build - don't worry - things get real easy - real fast.
You have a whole year of 12 "turns" - there is not much that will mess you up, and no penalty - except to the nation as a whole. Even then - the only real "penalty" is that your nation will simply shrink quickly in formal borders until it reaches a manageable level.
But then - at the start of the new year - you'll be able to expand those borders again - if you choose to.
Good hunting, and I'll be watching the boards!

OK, so now we don't have our buildings for month 1?
Month 1: we have no buildings, or edicts, nad need to make a flat DC35 to make any BP regardless of size.
we also don't have to worry about consumption at the moment, i take it? or do we?
Are the taxes to saravale just the money that we get, or does that also include the BP we make?
What about magic items? If we make the Econ roll to sell the magic items we generate, do we get BP for them (if the are worth at least 4000 gp) as noted in the section detailing how your turn works
Step 3 - Sell Valuable Items: You can attempt to sell items that cost more than 4.000 gp through your city's markets to bolster your Treasury; these can be items yu recover during your adventure or they can be magic items currently held by any of your cities. to sell these items make an Economy check (DC 20 for minor items, DC 35 for moderate items, and DC 50 for Major Items).
where do i post my rolls?
For the first year, are we limited by the number of buildings allowable based on the size of the Barony?
If we follow that limitation, then we get 1 building, 1 road, 1 farm, can claim 1 hex, and and make 1 city in our barony each turn, and and as we remain size 7 at max, it stays that way through the game?.

1. Month 1 -
You calculate the Base DC normally, but one of those variables is the size of your town. Remember - if you have a very expensive building, it may only occupy a small amount of squares, meaning you have a lower population.
Your buildings are there for social RP - but the first month you don't the bonuses for economy - that happens next month. You only get taxes, unless you roll really well. Of course - this is modified by the stats of your council
Remember: You don't need to worry about edicts, or anything like that for the entire year. All you need to do is roll a standard Economy Check - and you can take four "social RP actions" each month (one a week) that are all at natural 20's. If you use the same action two weeks in a row - you can gain a "+2" aid check. So, if for example you want to put the full resources of your Council on a Knowledge Check to find out a detail - take your most knowledge council member (regarding a specific check) - then you can take a "natural 20" on it - you can even add to that roll a free +2 for everyone on your Council who chooses to "Aid you" that week an can roll a normal aid check (but they must have the skill).
Basically - you will auto-succeed at your skill checks; if you have a high enough total to beat the DC of the question - it comes down to "What question do you want to the answer to?."
Also - if you fail - I'll tell you what you need to do "next week" to get a better roll.
Also - you're not limited to Knowledge Checks - if you want a "Diplomacy Roll" to create a special contact with a minor Crime Syndicate - you can do it. If you want to create a special military unit - you can roll "Profession Soldier" (if you have ranks in it; or have one of your "officers/council members take 20 in it) - and you will begin to recruit with auto-success. And if THAT isn't good enough - I'll tell you what to do to make it better.
2. Regarding national Taxes and selling magical items
Remember 2 things - one this national tax thing lasts 3 months only, until the council meets again to put things to a vote. Sadly - it goes to all earned coin - including BP. So if you earned 4 BP - you "technically earned" 16,000 GP - which means you have to pay the taxman the percentage of that BP - leaving you roughly 3 BP and some coin.
Magical Items can be sold, if you have the means to make them - but ath only happens once every 3 months - as per book standard. Also - I am the one who rolls what magical item you get to sell.
Meanwhile - you guys cannot lose! If you fail your monthly economy rolls - there is no penalty, except that the nation as a whole simply shrinks. If you succeed and improve your town - you have much more creative flexibility to make it happen.
Where do I make these rolls?
The rolls are made on your "discussion page" for your barony. Simply put up:
"Month one Economy roll
Week one Skill I want to use -
Week two Skill... and so on.
If you have any questions on what skill to use, who in your council can do what to help you - feel free to ask.
Based on your skill checks - you can get more gold, if you ask the right questions. Since you can't get wrong answers - this will give you the chance to be creative. Creative answers are rewarded with gold and BP.
Number of Buildings Based on Size
Ah - now you know why a Barony needed to claim 7 hexes! Remember - formally you have cleared the land for one hex. But you can build on (in time) all six hexes which surround your barony.
The rules state that you cannot expand a "city" beyond the first 36 squares until those squares are completely filled up. Then, you can expand your city to a second "grid" of 36 squares - but only if you have another "hex" claimed on the map.
The rules say you cannot expand beyond the first "36 squares" until they are all filled up. You can do that - but it may not be a good plan to do that quickly.
However - if your BP grows well and fast - you may be able to expand past the first 36 squares of the first "section" of your city quickly.
Remember - the mechanism for city building is a bit odd.
You have a 36 square grid - which grants you (if filled) 9,000 citizens.
You can then build a second grid, if you claim a second Hex - when this is done, you will be able to fill that up, too - for an additional 9,000 citizens.
Since you cannot expand a city, unless you claim an additional hex - that means that your barony (as per standard city rules) can only cover 7 hexes - for a potential total of 7 x 36 squares - and a total of (potentially) 63,000 citizens (if you get that high).
Remember - things will slow down a lot after the first year - but for now, this should get you safely on your way.
Remember too; building a Farm, Road, or claiming hex (including clearing it) all cost BP. You may wish to conserve that BP for now...
How can I get more?
Well - you have some bonus BP you've already earned from the last quest.
Also - depending on how "pretty" your barony is at the end of the year - you'll get some more BP. So if you have a pretty map of your barony - and neat details of your town - like Waiph's icon for his barony - that will go a long way to helping you out.
Also - if you want to create "characters" for your council members - that will grant you bonus BP, too.
However - all those bonus BP will only come at the last month. That way, you don't know what the bonus is, and you have to assume you have no bonus and play it strategically now. The last month if I say "oh, and in addition what you roll - give yourself an extra 6 BP" - that is a surprise which you can use to add on and make things work well, but - it is supposed to be a surprise.
Okay - whew - a lot of information there. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.
Thanks!
