Hi all. My "swamping" has not yet ended, it seems, and it probably won't until tomorrow afternoon at the least. I'm guessing we're about to head into combat so would Sully or somebody else please run Rani for me? Or, say she stayed in camp with the flu or something. Haven't even had a chance to update her to 2nd yet. :(

I'm sure we can run her for you if need be. I assume you were just planning on a 2nd level of Cleric? We wouldn't want Rani to miss out on a temple of Erastil, no would we?

Harther Medvyed wrote:
"Do you all hear that?" Harther quietly asks his companions. "A low rumble coming from the mouth of the temple, there." Harther raises his bow and points it at the temple entrance.

At Harthers' prompting Tyr again strains to listen, though his hands do draw forth his sword as his companions have also drawn their weapons.

Perception:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

"Aye, I hear...something"

"If it's just coming from inside the entrance, perhaps using an illusion as a decoy might spring any ambush the creature has prepared."

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Why not simply enter with a summoned creature leading the way?

Try it anyway? I'm cold out here and tired. The decision's in your hands.

Tonight is the last day of studio recording, then my evenings will be my own again. If I'm not too wiped, I'll try and update when I get home tonight. Otherwise, it will be tomorrow.

"Couldn't hurt, especially if what Harther hears is the bear Jhod told us about back at Oleg's." Karthas says to Eseldra, while unsheathing his greatsword,

*Bear?* Thinks Tyr at Karthas' comments. He too draws his great sowrd.

"Um...if this is a shrine to a nature god...should we be killing a bear?" Tyr asks now slightly nervous.

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

"Jhod said something about a legend of a great bear that guards a lost temple, and the tales speak of this beast as being crazed with rage and pain. If we end the guardian's suffering, perhaps Old Deadeye will once again grace this shrine."

Turing his head towards Rani

"But not being a priest of any sort, I could be way off on that assumption. What do you think, Rani?"

"But not being a priest of any sort, I could be way off on that assumption. What do you think, Rani?"

Tyr opens his mouth at Karthas explanation. The shuts it again, clearly nonplussed as to the ways of the gods. He too looks to Rani for her council.

"The priest seemed to want us to find the lost temple to Erastil, and I can't believe that he would want us to find the temple for him, only to be eaten by a bear. I got the distinct impression that we were to deal with the guardian if we found it."

"Very well, I will summon a creature, but we should do it from right near the opening, so I can send it in immediately. I will summon a celestial fire beetle, as it will give off its own light that we may see by."

Once everybody is ready, weapons set, actions readied, she'll begin summoning the fire beetle. It will last for 3 rounds after it appears.

Initiative for Eseldra in case you want it: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Berenkor defers to Eseldra, and walks a little behind the fire beetle as it enters the cave, crossbow at the ready.

Initiative Roll

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

Tyr shrugs, hefts his sword and follows.

"Um, Berenkor? Should you be so close?" Tyr whispers.

Initiative:1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Hmm... I suppose I can hang back a little more. the Gnome whispers back, walking alongside Tyr instead.

Human Psychomancer

*dotted*

As soon as Eseldra finishes her spell and the summoned creature comes into being, an absolutely massive grizzly bear steps into the dim light and roars, sending flecks of rancid drool splashing onto the party and nearly deafening the Chartered Six.

Berenkor - 13
Eseldra - 11
Grizzly bear - 10ooc]

Karthas - 1d20+2=3

Rani, Tyr, Berenkor, and Eseldra! The bear is twenty feet directly in front of the party.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Berenkor immediately fires his heavy crossbow at the grizzly in front of him.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
1d8 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + (4) + 1 = 6

Fear not the grizzly bear brave comrades, for steel and sorcery shall slay this beast like any other! perhaps rather foolishly, Berenkor stands his ground after taking the shot, dropping his crossbow and drawing his longsword. (For AC purposes I have the buckler out still.)

Man i'm on a natural 20 spree at the moment... Although to be fair this will be my first crit in Kingmaker. Morghrim's obviously rooting for his little buddy Berenkor. Roll to confirm coming up...

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
2d8 + 2 ⇒ (7, 8) + 2 = 17 Extra damage

Wow... two 20's... Sully I am expecting Berenkor's face to get somewhat chewed after this!

Bah, I know that but in my insomniac state I was mentally seeing that as 'adding x2'... Its 3AM. Can't edit it now so just use the first dice roll- 8 extra damage, for a total of 14 from the shot overall.

Round 1:

Eseldra's fire beetle "Glow-y" will attack the bear.
Glow-y's attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Eseldra will throw a grease spell under the bear (Reflex save DC 16 or fall).

I will be out of town most of this weekend starting like now. I may or may not have internet access, so please feel free to NPC my character. Sorry for the short notice - hope everyone has a great weekend!

Sully, Harther will fire an arrow on his first round if possible (plus he has Precise Shot now). On subsequent rounds he will either continue to shoot arrows or close and attack with greatsword (your choice). Thanks!

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

Sully, with Harther out for the weekend, I'll take care of a map for this battle if you want one. Also with Rani leaving the group, can I assume that we will keep her around for this battle and until we get back to Oleg's at least?

On Behalf of Rani

Rani says a short prayer to Erastil, hoping her aim is true to end the guardian's suffering

Attack (longbow):1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage:1d8 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 Oh goody, a point of non-leathal

Ok, given his hot streak, maybe I should have let Berenkor handle that...Hey B, you've got Rani the rest of the way ;)

Huh? Rani's leaving? I thought she was just unable to post much for a while?

Edit: Well I just saw the discussion thread. Bah...

On the bright side, the bear's AOO probably ganked the beetle, rather than hitting you :)

My apologies for being a terrible DM these last couple weeks. I went on a spontaneous camping trip this weekend that came up last weekend. Will post in the morning. Promise!

I owe you guys an explanation. Work has been absolutely pounding me the last couple weeks. That paired with a good friend of mine being on leave from the military has almost frozen my posting. I will be out of commission until this Friday. I don't want you to think I'm abandoning the game, because I'm certainly not, but I don't want you all hanging on thinking I'm gone for good. Posting, and quick posting at that, will return on Friday. Thanks for your understanding, and we'll get back to the game soon.

It's ok buddy, it's given me a window to make that epicly long first post the campaign I started needs :P have a blast and i'll look forward to Friday. If you do get a chance though, finding a replacement for Rani while you can't post means they have time to stat out their character in the downtime.

Edit: Just seen the new topic, nice tagline :P

Rani's arrow flies true, but bounces off the thick hide of the bear, drawing another frenzied growl of surprise and anger from the massive beast. Tyr quickly advances and swings his greatsword in a high arc, but slips on one of the moss covered steps and nearly loses his footing.

Berenkor sends a crossbow bolt in the direction of the grizzly, burying the bolt to the fletching in the bears flank, the flame enchantment singing the fur and filling the air with the rancid stink of burnt fur. The bear shrieks in pain but remains standing.

Eseldra's beetle "Glow-y" (clever!) tries to attack the creature, but it's mandibles fail to pierce the bear's hide. Eseldra mutters a few words and covers the ground under the bear. After a few moments of slipping and sliding, the beast is able to maintain its footing. Roaring wildly, and with a crazed look in it's eyes, the grizzly swipes two claws at Tyr, rending his flesh and attempting to pin the warrior on his back. Both claws dig into Tyr's shoulders, but the bear fails to knock the man off his feet. Tyr takes a total of 19 points of damage.

You're up Harther! I'm glad to be back!

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

My posting over the next few days is likely to be more infrequent, and limited to the evenings (San Diego, CA time) due to a bit of business travel. Feel free to take actions for me if needed to keep the game moving.

Assuming the bear is still up when my turn comes around, Karthas will tumble into postion to pick up a flank from Tyr, Rage, and strike at the beast.

Acrobatics:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

Attack:1d20 + 6 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 2 - 1 = 9 (flank, power attack)
Damage:2d6 + 1d6 + 7 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (5, 4) + (2) + 7 + 3 + 1 = 22 (sneak attack, power attack, dirty fighter)

EDIT: Nice time to roll like crap...must be rusty :) Welcome back Sully!

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

WB Sully. Poor Tyr!

Rani's round two action

Will be to move to Tyr and cast Cure Light Wounds. I don't know what spells Rani had prepared, but she'll have at least 3 level 1 spells to convert.

If Rani cannot cast safely because she is in a threatened square, she will use Selective Channeling to instead channel healing into the party, especially if Karthas takes an AOO. Please advise on Rani's initiative count Sully.

CLW Dice-1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Channel Dice- 1d6 ⇒ 6

Really hoping the bear is right up in Tyr's grill so Rani was forced to channel... lol.

Round One:
Harther calmly draws back and releases the arrow he had nocked on his bow, sending the missile whistling toward the bear.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4
Note: Harther now has Precise Shot, so no -4 penalty for firing into melee.

Man, I really need to get a mighty composite longbow to add to the archery damage...

Welcome back, Sully!

At the terrific mauling from the bear, Tyr drops to 11 Hp.
He grits his teeth against the pain from the beasts claws and fights back.

Pwr Att:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Confirm Crit:1d20 ⇒ 11

Dam Roll:2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9

Berenkors' healing lifts Tyrs' spirits and staunches the worst of the bleeding (+6 Hp brings Tyr up to 17 Hp)
Edit: Sorry, kind of lost my place there. *bows*

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Just because i'm lazy and don't like having to keep scrolling up- Round 2's Initiative again

Initiative -
Rani - 1d20+2=17
Tyr - 16
Berenkor - 13
Eseldra - 11
Grizzly bear - 10
Harther - 1d20+5=9
Karthas - 1d20+2=3

Rani's declared action is above, need Sully to tell me which of her two proposed actions happens though (dependent on AOO's).

Berenkor steps away from the beast, moving behind Tyr and supplementing Rani's healing magic with his own, casting Cure Light Wounds and sealing many of the vicious claw wounds that nearly downed the strong warrior.

That bear's no match for your sword my friend... the Gnome mutters to Tyr as he lays a hand upon the warrior. Cut the beast into bits! he says encouragingly as the spell finishes.

May or may not be in a threatened square; if I am Tyr is still providing me with soft cover and I have my buckler strapped on so my AC should be pretty good.

CLW= 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Erm Tyr; you had 15HP max at level 1, I know for a fact you must have more max HP than the 19 damage you took even if you rolled a 1 on the D10. Also, at 0HP your disabled, not dying; and still standing by the time rani's healing magic puts you up by 6 or 4HP.

Also dude you really have to get Tyr levelled to Level 2 already... Take the average of 6 on the dice or roll a d10 :)

Male Kellid Human Barbarian 2 / Rogue (Scout) 2

Round 2: (Assuming both the bear and I are still up when my turn rolls around)

Karthas continues to flank the angry beast, swinging ferociously at the crazed guardian.

Attack:1d20 + 6 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 2 - 1 = 24 (flank, power attack)
Damage:2d6 + 1d6 + 7 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2, 4) + (5) + 7 + 3 + 1 = 22(sneak attack, power attack, dirty fighter)

Harther's arrow finds its mark, sinking deep into the chest of the rearing bear. Karthas is not so fortunate, as his strike fails to connect with the massive beast.

Start of Round 2
Karthas and Tyr have taken up flanking positions. The bear is still standing, and Eseldra's beetle is alongside the bear also pressing the attack.

Rani asks for a quick blessing, and the party feels their wounds begin to knit closed. She channels to avoid the AOO.

Tyr launches a vicious counterattack, opening a huge gash across the beasts throat. Miraculously, the beast presses the attack! The bear swipes his paw at Berenkor as he begins his spell, but the nimble gnome easily avoids the attack and finishes his spell, bringing more relief to Tyr's grevious wounds.

I'll give Eseldra a bit of time to post, then I'll come up with something for her. :)

Round 2:
Eseldra will go for the sure damage of a magic missile.
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Glow-y attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14; damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Tyr buddy, if your taking the average of 6 which it looks like you have done, remember to account your Con into the HP you gain. You should have a max of 23HP.

Also, loving that you took power attack- but on a two handed weaon its a minus 1 to attack rolls and a +3 to damage instead of the normal -1 for +2; so power attack greatsword is a whopping 2d6+7 damage :). On a minor note, in your skills heal and sense motive are based off Wisdom.

Sorry, I just plugged quick numbers in on the fly. Still, close to the mark and not 'over doing' anything. Thank you for the pointers.

Round 2:

Att Roll:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Crit Confirm:1d20 ⇒ 6

Dam Roll:2d6 + 7 ⇒ (4, 3) + 7 = 14

Round Two:
Harther drops his bow and draws his greatsword as he moves to engage the wounded grizzly in melee. The ranger attempts to take up a flanking position with the celestial beetle.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 2 = 7 (please subtract 2 if not flanking)
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 1) + 3 = 5

EDIT: Evidently Harther tripped on all of the blood from the previous round of the battle!
EDIT 2: Wow, three 1's in a row! Is that a record?

Eseldra launches a bolt of pure magical energy, striking the beast on its snout and drawing yet another roar of anger. The grizzly continues mauling Tyr, striking the warrior with both claws, but again fails to grab hold of the mighty fighter. Tyr takes another 15 points of damage.

Harther, obviously rattled by the creatures crazed demeanor, pulls his strike at the last moment, skipping across the beasts matted fur but failing to draw blood. Karthas has more luck, running the beast clear through with a powerful downward stab. The marauding beast shrieks with insane rage, but still fights on!

Start of Round 3
The grizzly still fights, though flanked on both sides. Bleeding from multiple wounds, the fight has to be nearing the end, doesn't it?

Round 3 action time! Go ahead and post.

Round Three:
Shaken by the bear's insane behavior, Harther tries to regain his composure and attempts to stab the crazed animal with his greatsword.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 2 = 26 (includes flanking bonus)
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 1) + 3 = 10

Critical Hit Confirmation:

Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 2 = 8
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 4) + 3 = 10

Male Halfling Cavalier 1 (Honor Guard, Emissary)

Round 3 Rani

Seeing Tyr almost taken down by the bear once again, Rani desperately channels; once more excluding the beast from her blessings.

1d6 ⇒ 5

Tyr and anyone else woundded, gain 5HP.

Round 3 Berenkor

Not wanting to risk another swipe at him while spellcasting, Berenkor 5 foot steps into the melee to complete the four-way flank and stabs at the bear with his longsword, tiny in comparison to the gigantic weapons wielded by his fellows.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

1d6 ⇒ 1

The strike neatly cuts across the bear's throat, but Berenkor pulls his sword back too early and the blow scratches the beast instead of felling it.

Wow I rock at channeling. 6 and a 5. Anyway Tyr, you should be at 13HP after that blow and this round's channel, as I got my spell off last round.

Round 3:
Glow-y attacks:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21; damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Eseldra launches an acid dart: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 - 4 = 4; damage (in case of a really bad touch AC): 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Glow-y crit confirm: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
