Carrakas |
"Depends on if there are still people there, or if they are gathering at the bottom of the stairs to come up here. If we can jump past the bulk of the remaining cultists, we might avoid some fighting."
DM Puppet Master |
It may not be clear from the map, but just wanted to point out that the room with the stairs down is kind of a 2-story tall room. Meaning from Carrakas' current position on the map, he could tell you that there's no one currently at the bottom of the stairs. It's kind of like there's a balcony along the sides of the wall on the 2nd floor that looks down onto the main worship hall.
Marzela |
Since the stairs seem clear she says I think we should take the stairs. Carrakas, will any of these robes fit you?
She makes sure she has a mask to cover her face and her "signature" rapier out, and walks to the top of the stairs. As soon as the rest of the party are close enough to her so that she can include everyone in the channel, she does so, twice (figuring she can do the second while everyone is walking the rest of the way).
Channel Positive Energy: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5) = 11
Channel Positive Energy: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6) = 14
Everyone gets 25 hit points back.
Then she waits for someone who has the ability to lie to take the lead, and hopes no one will ask her a direct question.
Carrakas |
Carrakas puts on one of the robes as quickly as he can, then picks back up his shield. He puts on a mask, shuddering lightly as he does so. Bloody masks, hope this one doesn't try to suffocate me too... As he joins Marzela, he too waits for someone else to take the lead. "Not much of a liar myself - never found it necessary. Someone else better take point."
Jaed Zandorias |
Jaed adjusts his mask and walks past Carrakas and Marzela. "No worries, I have told some alternative facts to this guys before and they believed them, they are not very smart."
He will descend the stairs when everyone is ready and if everything is clear then head towards the door.
Millsy the Cat |
Finnrick dons a robe and mask and follows Jaed, ready to reach out and touch him with enhanced diplomacy. He also casts it on himself as they leave.
He hasn't had a chance to process his transformation yet or the fact that it seemed like Millsy spoke to him, but that will have to wait until they get out.

DM Puppet Master |
Jaed walks down the stairs and looks around. The main worship hall you're in appears to be empty with the double doors to the hallway leading outside closed.
What's the plan? Head towards the courtyard and attempt to bluff any cultists you run in to? If so, who's wearing what color robes? About all I can gather is Marzela is wearing black and pretending to be Rennec.
Marzela |
I was hoping for an easier exit on the first floor on this side, but if that isn't an exit (the others know the building much better than Marzela does... she just saw the doors and assumed), then yeah... that sounds like the plan. Get to an exit and out of here the quickest way possible. Also, I kind of thought the other group members besides Carrakas and myself were already in robes from their previous bluffing efforts, but ??
Jaed Zandorias |
Jaed is wearing a prestidigitared black robe, now probably soaked in blood but that should not be a problem. Are the double doors locked? If so Jaed will attemp to unlock them. If that doesn't work, I suppose there is no other option than to head towards the courtyard.
Disable device: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
DM Puppet Master |
Everybody gathers around the door downstairs, ready to bluff their way past any challengers. Taking a deep breath, Jaed opens the unlocked door...and is immediately met with short swords and a mini hail of crossbow bolts from the five cultists on the other side. There are 4 guys in white robes, one of whom Jaed, Lily, and Finnrick recognize as their fellow initiate Evlar, and one gray robed guy

"What do you think you are doing!! Lay down your weapons now and you won't be too harshly punished. Just this little bit." Jaed tries to give his voice a deeper tone to sounds more like Egarthis and so it cannot be easily identified by Evlar.
Bluff: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

Cultist: -3, bleeding out
With a cry, the white robed cultist in front of Jaed falls. The gray robed cultist reloads his crossbow as does Evlar, both keeping their weapons trained on the rogue. "Then why didn't you say the password before entering? Where's Krant?" The gray robed woman makes a gesture towards the other white-robed crossbowman, who steps forward and begins administering a potion to the fallen cultist. The still standing cultist with a short sword likewise holds his weapon at the ready.
Entire party is up
Marzela |
Will Save (if needed): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Marzela responds to the questions asked calmly:
We don't have time for passwords right now. Didn't you hear the fighting upstairs earlier? Krant is dead, and we barely made it out ourselves. We're going to talk to someone about this break-in. Now clear the way for us so that we don't have to kill you on the way.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (15) + 18 = 33 <--only 29 for any non-humans

I tried to word that so that it would work whether I am forced to tell the truth or not, but GM ruling on whether it is enough.
Jaed Zandorias |
"Beware of who you are talking to, I don't like that tone. Krant gave his live for the Living God, watch you are not next." Jaed tries to sound as intimidating as he can.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
which is not much...
"Now move aside. As she said, we have urgent matters to attend. Our temple has been desecrated. This cannot happen again. Praise Razmir."
Bluff: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Millsy the Cat |
Finnrick begins to say something but thinks better of it. For not being able to lie, that cleric certainly came up with a convincing story. he thinks to himself as he ushers Millsy behind him.

"We have strict orders from Faltore not to let anyone through without the password until the intruders have been killed. If you want us to disobey his orders, you'll have to speak to him directly. I'll have Samael fetch him."
The white robed cultists who had been feeding their fallen comrade a potion steps back, reloads his crossbow, and joins his companions in pointing it at Jaed. The prone cultist then proceeds to wobbily get to his feet and move off to follow the gray robed one's instruction. This provokes 2 AoO from Jaed and Carrakas, if they choose to take them
Party is up again
Marzela |
Do you really need to go count the bodies up there to SEE that they all have been KILLED? Is it not OBVIOUS since we are standing before you?
... That's fine. You go get Faltore and waste your own time. In the meantime, we'll kill anyone who stands in our way. Nothing personal. You're just under orders, I understand. The loss of life is a shame, and I wish that I could spare you, but if you can't think for yourselves...
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (9) + 18 = 27 <-- minus 4 for non-humans
Marzela draws her Scimitar.
Kill them.
This walking through the interior thing is such a bad, cramped idea, which I apologize for, but the map looked like those external double doors were an exit to the building. Unfortunately, I have no ranged weapon or any spells and I am in the back, and these Razmirian idiots apparently will not listen to reason, so I think, once again, death is the only option. We do have an unidentified wand. If things get bad, maybe I will try that, though if it were an attack-type wand, it would probably already have been used on us, so... not sure that is a good idea either.
Carrakas |
At Marzela's command, Carrakas begins to move, ignoring the nearest cultist with the short sword. He simply moves around the man until he is behind him.
Going to eat the potential AOO from the mook with the short sword. Potentially two AOOs if he has combat reflexes.
Once he is in position behind him, the masked tiefling will again form his kinetic blade, dirt and earth rushing toward his hand until his double-bladed axe is formed once more, and then he will take a powerful swing at the one cultist blocking the exit in the south half of the hallway.
Kinetic Blade Earth Blast with Power Attack vs Evlar, choosing slashing damage.
Attack, PA: 1d20 + 10 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 10 - 1 = 29
Damage, PA, Slashing: 2d6 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2, 6) + 5 + 2 = 15
Woot - potential crit! Confirming.
Confirm Crit, PA: 1d20 + 10 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 10 - 1 = 14
Crit Damage, PA, Slashing: 2d6 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 5 + 2 = 12
If that drops Evlar, that potentially leaves the path open for others to run past and out. The crossbowmen won't get any AOOs unless they have unarmed strike, and the mook with the sword hopefully already used his AOO on me. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Jaed Zandorias |
Ok, so we are continuing the massacre then... :P
Jaed shrugs afeter Marzela's words and not trying to hide his real voice anymore he adds: "Well, you've heard the lady. Time to die."
He then takes a step to the side to flank the cultist with the short sword and attacks him.
Right short sword: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
Left short sword: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
If I interpret the flow of events correctly, I think we cannot take the attacks of opportunity because we decide to engage when Marzela talks, which is after the cultist leaves. And Marzela, no worries, it will be easier to find the exit once we are the only ones alive in the temple :)
DM Puppet Master |
Well, you say "won't listen to reason" I say, "You're all very clearly lying and only Jaed's high bluff and their low sense motive had the cultists second guessing themselves". ;-)
As soon as hostilities resume, more blows rain down upon Jaed, but only the short sword manages to land. Readied actions
Short sword 1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Crossbow 1 Evlar: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 3 - 4 = 15
Crossbow 3 priest: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 6 - 4 = 5
Damage on Jaed: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
AoO on Carrakas: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Yes, you are correct that you can't take AoO if you resume hostilities when Marzela talked.
Carrakas moves around one cultist, who's blow bounces off his armor, and scores a solid hit on Evlar that falls slightly short of being truly devasating. Meanwhile Jaed soon gets his revenge on the sword-sword wielding cultist as the man falls. One cultist down, Evlar is still up though
Finnrick and Lily still have actions
Marzela |
Well, you say "won't listen to reason" I say, "You're all very clearly lying and only Jaed's high bluff and their low sense motive had the cultists second guessing themselves". ;-)
Ha ha. Definitely wasn't a criticism of your DM skills, or saying it was an incorrect way to play it. Marzela likes to be able to talk anyone into anything. But if they are determined to die, then we'll accommodate them. Just not sure why they aren't running. If the little white cloaks believe us, then we are going to kill them for being slow. If they don't believe us, then we are going to kill them for being in our way. Either way, stay and die... but maybe this guy Faltore is scary enough that they think he'll save them, or kill them for running, or ... they really are that dedicated to Razmir. ... The tenets of the religion aren't great, but if they feed you and no one else does, I suppose I would likely be loyal too. I just wish there were a less-Murdery solution. Going back to the temple and reporting how I "helped" people today is likely not going to go well. :)
Carrakas |
There was a mook between Jaed and I, Jaed killed him with all his flanking sneak attackiness
DM Puppet Master |
@Lily: Yes, Carrakas is correct. Jaed killed his foe, so I deleted him from existence. Or at least from the map. In case you were waiting for that answer before deciding on what you would do, you can still post this round's action, and I'll retcon it in.
Attempting to take advantage of a relatively clean shot, Finnrick pulls out his sling and aims at Evlar as Millsy leaps into the fray soon after, attempting to bite and trip the man.
Finnrick sling, into melee: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 5 - 4 = 10
Millsy bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Unfortunately, the mask slips down Finnrick's face, causing his shot to bounce off the ground and forcing Millsy to jump back to avoid it before completing her attack.
As all pretense is dropped, Evlar immediately recognizes Jaed's voice and his hands begin to shake in anger. "You! I knew you were villainous scum, but now this?! Of course you would try to skip straight to the top. Always thought you were better'n all the rest of us. I bet this week was the first time you ever did any real work, but I guess that was too far below you."
He looks like he's about to throw his crossbow past Carrakas at the rogue when the gray-robed cultist's voice interrupts him. "Evlar, enough of this nonsense. Go warn the others." There's a brief pause as he clenches his fist around his weapon before complying and withdrawing and running out the front doors. Withdraw action, so no AoO
The gray robed cultist steps forward to take his place, dropping her crossbow as she does so to instead pull out her rapier. The white robed man next to her does likewise with his sword sword. Looking between the heavily armored tiefling and the small cat, both concentrate on the small cat.
Short sword vs AC 18: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Rapier vs AC 18: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Confirm short sword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Damage on Millsy: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
In the distance you can hear Evlar and the other white robed cultists shouting, no doubt to raise the alarm.
Round summary
- 3 dmg to Jaed
- 5 dmg to Millsy
- Jaed killed one white robed cultist
- 15 dmg on Evlar from Carrakas
- Lily still has an action this round + next round's action
Party is up
Carrakas |
Carrakas growls at the retreating Evlar. That's not good - time to leave! He reaches back and forms his blade yet again, swinging it forward at the white-robed cultist. His swing is a little more careful this time, and seems to have a little extra weight behind it.
Using a Pushing Kinetic Blade Earth Blast, choosing slashing damage, which will cost me one burn. If I hit, I get a free bull rush attempt against my target, substituting my constitution mod for my strength mod (actually worse for me, but the infusion doesn't make it optional unfortunately).
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (4, 5) + 5 = 14
CMB Bull Rush attempt: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Assuming that works, the white robed cultist should be knocked 5 feet west, clearing up a path for escape through there. What follows assumes that the bull rush was successful or the guy is dead - if neither of those things happen, I'll take a 5-foot-step southeast instead to clear the path for Jaed to engage white-robe.
Seeing his foe take a vicious hit and get sent rushing back, the tiefling takes the opportunity to rush forward. "Move, now!" he calls to his friends, as he moves tidily around the cultists and out the same double doors that Evalr went out., before turning back toward the cultists in the hallway with his shield raised.
Using a move action to move to the square 20ft west and 5ft south of my current spot. This should trigger AOOs from both cultists and their cute little swords. Not actually moving myself on the map, as I've made some assumptions here, so wanted to make sure everything worked before doing so.
Marzela |
In response to Carrakas' yell, Marzela sprints for the street exit.
I can move myself to do that, but waiting to see what things look like after Carrakas' action.
If his action *doesn't* work for some reason, she might have to pull up short, but she is committed until she sees something horribly wrong.
Finnrick |
Millsy attempts to leap past the cultist and give chase to Evlar just as she leaps off Finnrick brushes her fur "May Sarenrae guide you. Go get him girl," He casts guidance on Millsy while droping his sling and drawing his scimitar.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Millsy will use acrobatics to "tumble" through the enemies square which if successful should not incur and AOO. (I could be wrong on that) She can then move half her base speed. The check is 5+CMD and if I fail I lose the move action, but I believe that I would then be able to attack I'll stick a spoiler on from the SRD
Situation Base Acrobatics DC1
Move through a threatened area Opponent’s Combat Maneuver Defense
Move through an enemy’s space 5 + Opponent’s Combat Maneuver Defense
DM Puppet Master |
Carrakas slashes at the white robed cultist, easily pushing him back and almost dropping him. He then quickly dashes past as both people swing their blades at him.
Sword sword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Rapier: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
However, both blades clack useless off of his armor. Millsy takes the cultist's distraction to also dash past.
Everybody who was waiting on the result of Carrakas' action can now move their tokens. I updated Carrakas' position based on his description.
Marzela |
Marzela runs up to the doors, looking to see if the gates are open.
I can still run all the way out if they are, but I am guessing I'm not that lucky? I stopped by Evlar just in case... entered a threatened square, but didn't exit it, so he can hit me on his turn, but no AOO (unless running automatically gives you one (?))
DM Puppet Master |
Running by itself doesn't provoke AoO. Also, Evlar is currently carrying a crossbow. In front of you, you see a pair of heavy, wooden double doors that are currently closed.
Jaed Zandorias |
Jaed seizes the opportunity and moves behind the white robed cultist. "Move people! To the doors! Carrakas and I will cover you."
In an attempt to keep the cultists busy he attacks the the guy next to him:
Short sword: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Crit confirm: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Looks like the Jaed really hates these cultists.
DM Puppet Master |
Jaed slashes out, cutting down the already badly wounded white-robe next to him.
I think we're just waiting on Lily to move. If she hasn't done so by tonight, I'll just bot her and move to the next round.
DM Puppet Master |
"They're here! They're here! They're trying to pass themselves off as priests and heralds!" Evlar begins shouting as he drops his crossbow in favor of his blade.
Attack on Marzela AC 16: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Hearing the warning, two of the new guards on the ramparts look over and also join in. Not quite sure who's who, they aim at Millsy, who is at least an obvious enemy. Unfortunately for them, the wily cat simply jumps out of the way. A third acolyte also pops up on the walkway and looks around, a bit confused over the sudden action as the one who had been about to enter charges forward, drawing his sword and looking generally menacing without doing anything just yet.
Crossbow 1 vs Millsy AC 18: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Crossbow 2 vs Millsy AC 18: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Still inside the temple, the gray robed priest looks at Jaed and Carrakas looming behind Lily and promptly turns to attack Finnrick where he stands alone.

@Finnrick: I think you forgot to add in the 25 HP from Marzela's channel earlier.

Everybody is up again
Finnrick |
"Jaed, help" Finnrick yelps as he pummeled by the cultist he raises his sword and makes a tentative swing at his attacker, worroring more about self preservation than actually killing him. AC 18

Jaed Zandorias |
"Hey you, leave my friend alone. Go back to your books and sermons. I'm getting bored of killing y'all like flies." With his words Jaed tries to attract the cultist attention away from Finnrick.
Short sword: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 10 + 2 = 31
damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 6) = 10
I'm posting from my phone so if someone could move Jaed to the square to the West of the cultist attacking Finnrick that'd be appreciated.
And one more critical threat:
Crit confirm: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 10 + 2 = 24
damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
DM Puppet Master |
The combined efforts of Jaed and Finnrick are enough to take down the priest harrying the druid. Meanwhile outside Marzela takes a large chunk out of Evlar, who cries out in pain but remains standing. Milly tries to imitate her companion, but the cultist seems ready for any attacks and dodges out of the way.
I'm guessing Carrakas was waiting on answers from discussion before doing anything, so he's the last person to take his action this round. Also, moved Jaed on the map.
Carrakas |
Carrakas looks back at his companions as they drop the last cultist inside. he gives them a quick nod, then says "Someone should see if any of these doors lock, to cut off reinforcements." He then begins to move forward, coming up between Marzela and Millsy. His eyes glint through the mask as he looks at Evlar. "Weren't able to run fast enough, eh boy? Heh. Let's see if you can hit any better than you run away."

Evlar snarls derisively at Carrakas as he approaches. "Ha! Now I know you're friends with that lot. No doubt you also think four on one is a fair fight, just like the rest of them!" He lifts up his mask to spit at the tieflings' feet. "Nothing but a bunch of bullies, the lot of you! Bullies and traitors!" Evlar then steps back and quickly quaffs a potion.
The other cultist on the ground, not liking the position he's in, moves to have the stable at his back and attacks the cat.
Sword sword vs Millsy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Up on the wall, the gray robed priest yells down as the acolytes aim their crossbows at different people. "Remove your masks and surrender or face the consequences! This will be your only warning!"
Everybody is up again.
Marzela |
Seeing that the Stabby boy isn't trying to gut her anymore, Marzela turns and tries the door. If it opens and she can get out, she definitely gets out.
Guessing it isn't going to be that easy and that they've done some nice prison renovations, so if the door doesn't open, or there are other impediments to our escape, she does this next:
Carrakas, the door is locked. Time for your backup over the wall plan. I'll be right behind you.
Change "locked" to whatever is actually stopping us from getting out if that is something different.
Marzela pulls out two vials, looks at one longingly, but applies the other to herself.
Marzela disappears.
From the room downstairs we had an oil of invisibility and a potion of gaseous form that we had identified. She wants to go gaseous right now, and slip out a crack in the door, but Lily has the evidence, so she is going invisible, plans to get the potion of gaseous form to Lily, and then get out.
DM Puppet Master |
As soon as Marzela makes a move that isn't to take off her mask and surrender, another hail of crossbow bolt rains down on the team. However, all the bolts miss.
Crossbow vs Marzela: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Crossbow vs Carrakas: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 3 - 4 = 6
Crossbow vs Millsy: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 4 = 11
The door is unlocked. However, on the other side is an iron portcullis that is currently down.
Carrakas |
Carrakas nods in response to Marzela. He moves away from the cultist he is engaged with (taking the AOO) and moves up to the wall east of the door. Without any hesitation, he reaches out his hands, and they seem to meld with the very stone of the wall. He begins to easily climb up the wall, seemingly just as easily as walking, and quickly arrives at the top of the wall next to the cultist. Once at the top of the wall, he forms another earthen axe and swings it at the cultist.

AoO on Carrakas: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
The cultist desperately attempts to whack Carrakas as he retreats, but once again, the blade merely bounces off of his armor. The tiefling then smoothly glides up the wall, leaping up and attempting to hit the priest at the top. The priest however, sees the man's approach and dodges.
Lily, Jaed, and Finnrick all have actions. Marzela is also currently invisible (added a yellow boarder around her icon to attempt to remind myself.
