As Nebbin moves south he sees more cavern with some passages naturally formed. He hears some more slithering, skittery sounds towards the east and he sees more of the insect like creatures on the ground...in a torpor of some sort, perhaps because they are newly hatched.

The gibbering larvae fly up towards the tunnels leading away from this part of cavern. Their droning buzz drives into your skulls, Thom and Nebbin especially. They shake their heads after a moment, but the disturbing sounds continue to drill into the sanity of any near enough. Nebbin cries out after he shakes his head, and moves back towards the group calling for Thom to follow.

Saoirse comes up next to Nebbin, putting her small hand against Nebbin's broad shoulder to help steady him, watching closely to see how fast the swarms are moving in. Now that any chance of stealth is over, Saoirse turns to ask a question to Lucius, "Do you have any ideas? We can't fight swarms with swords and hammers."

Lucius chants again in Infernal, calling an ice slick down on the nearest swarm.

Vescavor Swarm

Turook's arrow flies true, but harmlessly, through the swarming mass of demonlings. Lucius' spell fires off but the swarm is not affected (close).

The flying demonic larvae swarm over Thom, crawling all over his body, trying to find ways into inside his armor and mask.

Swarm1: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6
Swarm2: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8

Thom Fort Save 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28

As the first swarm chews away at him, he fights through a nauseating feeling, but when the second swarm begins chewing at him, he begins to feel nauseous.

"Get off him!" Nebbin yells as he pulls a vial -- stamped with Iomedae's sword symbol -- from a pouch. "Go pick on someone your own size!"

He moves closer and tosses the holy water toward the creatures, hoping the splash will drive them away from Thom, though most of it seems to end up on the floor. Not sure if he'd have to move adjacent as if it were incorporeal or if I can throw it, but he'll do whatever's required.

Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 sigh; so much for my only vial...

I think retreating's our only option at this point, or trying to go around them. We can hopefully get alchemist's fire from above, or see if Aron and Nurah can help, as Lucius suggested.

Thom manages to shake off the vescavors crawling over him and he runs back towards the cave entrance.

Yep. Not sure where else we would retreat to. And yah ... not sure how to deal with that. Did we leave the rope in place? Maybe we can call the folks topside to help pull Thom up?

"Here, Thom, take my ring," Nebbin urges, pulling off the magic device that helps him climb even better. "I don't think I need it!"

That should put him at +2, and it's only a DC of 5 with the rope.

He sets up a guard stances between the rope and the swarms, waiting to make sure his companions have safely ascended before following them.

Let's retreat upstairs. We need something other than we have or to go around these guys.

OK, let's make a decision here -- Lucius, you have the ability to cast three flurry of snowballs? We could do that and deal with these things or since they're apparently not following us, simply try a different tunnel and leave them here for now. We've already spent about three weeks making a decision, though.

The swarms get pelted by the snowballs, and more than the damage caused itself, the surprise of such a cold attack and their newness in age causes them to shrink back towards where they came, eventually dispersing into cracks in the walls.

"Oh, good job, Lucius!" Nebbin says, happily ... or at least as happily as he says anything since he entered the Worldwound.

"I guess we should see what else we can find, right?"

He heads back into the cavern, keeping toward the northern top wall, and then the eastern as he heads for the southeastern passage.

Nebbin as usual needs guidance and doesn't want to determine what way we go, but I want to keep us pushing forward so am having him be a little more assertive.

Multiple passageways within the walls and ceiling provide access to a large cavern. Its resin-encrusted surfaces gleam with slick layers of translucent slime, reflecting a pulsating purple glow from the southeast tunnel. A very large winged insect, reminiscent of the swarm of larvae you fought, is doing something towards the eastern wall.

Unless Lucius's info reveal shows this to be a bad move, buff (prot from evil) > destroy > hope the swarms get dispersed when their queen is destroyed? As for how to "destroy" ... no clue.

Then Thom waits for the assault to begin in ernest, at which point he'll hustle forward.

Nebbin's hammer SLAMS into the vescavor queen, rattling her hard carapace and drawing forth a scream. The sound of a thousand insectoid voices lashes through Nebbin's head.
