Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Perception DC 25: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Ser Armithia wakes early enough to spend an hour in prayer to Helm.
After that, the Gold elf prepares breakfast for the group. As he is pouring coffee, he looks out over the horizon to notice the dust cloud.
Looks like the show will start in a bit. Anyone got plans for how to ambush them without alerting the Outpost?
The Paladin then laughs.
I could stand alone in the middle of the road just to see what happens.

DM Fang Dragon |

The outpost is a dot on the opposite horizon. They'd need a telescope, magic or a patrol to see what befalls. All three of those are possible of course, whether they are likely is another matter entirely...

Azarra |

Azarra looks in the direction that Ser indicates.
Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (3) + 17 = 20 (fail)
She doesn't see anything, but she trusts him.
At his question, she looks towards the opposite horizon.
Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (14) + 17 = 31 (pass)
Well, I do see a patrol from the outpost that might get within a mile or so, but if we just move behind that small hill, they shouldn't see us at all.
She nods to a nearby hill, and urges everyone behind it (at least from the perspective of the outpost). Then she gets her weapons ready to face the oncoming orcs.
She asks Ishta
What's the range on one of those fireballs? That might be a good way to start... hit them all hard while they are still in a group and before they can hit back, and then mop up after?

Ishta Khosiv |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Ishta follows and takes her position behind the hill.
"I can hit them from more than five hundred feet away. That doesn't mean I have to - if they have defenses against it, we could end up too far away to fight properly."

Kardas Rasalas |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Kardas grumbles. "We need them closer so that if anyone survives, we can jump on them. With no anchor points, my web incantation will be useless out here, and I have no other spell that could be of use here."

DM Fang Dragon |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |

For the most part Kardas is 100% correct about there being no anchor points, however in the immediate vicinity there are a few scrubby bushes and the occasional boulder which should suffice.

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Ser Armithia could have relocated boulders, bushes, shrubbery around to accommodate a Web spell?
Actually not a bad idea; we could have arranged an area a bit further down the road toward the Outpost that Kardas could Web; if they try to take off to the Outpost.
Ser Armithia stands ready for the oncoming battle.

Azarra |

Good point Ishta. Maybe don't hit them *that* far away. But it still might be a way to wear them down a little maybe just before they get to us, and then if you have more than one, save it in case one of them gets past us, so you can hit anyone that flees? Your call though, of course... what do you think? Shall we start bombarding them from, say, 100 feet out? I'll start shooting when I see the fireball go off?
After they decide on a basic strategy, Azarra casts Message on everyone so they can talk even when hiding, and she moves up the hill to get a better position from which to snipe, although she stays lower than the very top of the hill so that she isn't silhouetted against the sky. Then she hunkers down to wait, trying to hide in the rocks and brush as best she can.
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (14) + 14 = 28

DM Fang Dragon |

Azarra finds a good hiding spot in the shadow of a shrubby bush through which she can unobtrusively observe their approach. Perhaps quarter of an hour later they're close enough to see, although they're still out of bow or fireball range...
Azarra reckons she can see ten orcs, all spread out in a ragged line, seemingly tired but heavily armed. Unless they bunch up, Ishta would only be able to incinerate three of them at best.
They're approaching and it appears they haven't seen you yet. Now's the time to post readied actions or buffs etc...

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

I shall cause them to bunch together. Just wait for my signal.
He looks directly at his friends.
May I suggest that no offensive action be taken prior to my signal. Kardas, can you turn Invisible and join me?
Once the band of orcs comes within 100' of the group, the golden armored Paladin begins walking calmly in their direction.
Ser Armithia will walk casually. He wants them to come gather around him. Once within 30' he will begin Initiative by doing Dazzling Display to Shaken them for Ishta's Fireball.

Azarra |

No buffs from me for now. Staying hidden, but might sing/cast haste later.

Kardas Rasalas |

Kardas utters a Nar word of power and weaves a magical shield to protect him from what's to come. He then readies the necessary words in his mind to turn invisible and nods at Armithia. "My illusionary spell barely lasts a minute, if that, but ok. Do not dally."
Cast 'shield' for +4 to AC for 8 minutes

DM Fang Dragon |

Ser Armitha stood there on the path patiently awaiting the oncoming orcs. They approached at a fast trot, but remained spread out. Just outside of bow range the lead orc raided his armoured hand, the formation stopped and he conferred with his lieutenants.

The bigger of the trio pulled a slender yard and a half blade made of some dark metal which had six softly glowing elven runes carved along its length. You're pretty sure you saw this at the auction, scoffing he spoke to his companions.
The smallest of the orcs had a well patched midnight blue cloak, she reached out to stop her companion and grunted a dismissive sounding response.
The third orc looked rather familiar, Eratz the Black, the slaver from the auction. On his back was a familiar looking bow, the one that was sold to Waylan the Short... Eratz nodded and tore a vaguely hound shaped badge off his cloak and threw it at the ground. There was a sudden peal of thunder followed by an unearthly howl!
A gaunt long-limbed hound appeared next to Eratz, floating in the air. He barked a word of command.
The floating hound's bark was more primal howl than anything, setting you all on edge. It's huge, soulless eyes surveyed the scene and then it started sniffing and approached, moving with a lean predatory grace...

@Ishta & Kardas I've placed you on the map. Note the orcs who are off the map are much further back.

Azarra |

Azarra is frustrated that they've let them get so close without hitting them, and weirded out that they are talking to each other and reaching our to stop each other from thirty-five feet away, but she figures they must just have a healthy fear of ambush. It was just too bad for her own group that the ambush they tried to set up seemed to be impossible.
However frustrated she is though, she stays hidden and waits for Ser's signal.

Ishta Khosiv |

Kn Planes: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
Ishta suspects the demoralising display Ser is about to show won't have much effect on the hound, so she starts making the arcane gestures of her favourite spell... and holds the command word until the Paladin gets his chance. She calculates she would be able to get the dog and one of the orcs in the fire, and gets a grip of her wand in case she is about the damage her friend.
Readied action: release the Kraken Fireball when Ser finishes his turn, whatever he does (hopefully demoralise everyone).

DM Fang Dragon |

Ser's readied action hasn't fired (yet), Dazzling display is limited to 30' and they haven't come close enough. This is because they're suspicious of the situation, they saw a single elf (their natural enemy) just walking towards them in the middle of nowhere as ten of them approached. Once they where close enough to recognise him (you're quite well known in the Phlan area) they added two and two together.
Anyway happy hunting, they have cool things :)
The orc with the adamantine curved blade (Red orc) impatiently watches the hound sniff around. The female orc with the cloak (Blue orc) starts a very provocative dance that seems to be mocking Ser Armithia with come hither motions, blown kisses and pelvic thrusts! The other orcs snigger at her antics.
She's started a bardic performance.

They seem to be 35' apart from each other...weird...lol.

Ishta Khosiv |

As soon as Ser does his thing, Ishta shouts the arcane word and launches a frozen sphere that explodes near the weird hound.
"Ruspal!"
I think from the right point the explosion can hit yellow, green and blue, am I right?
Intensified Coldball, DC 22 Ref for half damage: 14d6 + 14 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 1, 3, 6, 4, 5, 3, 3, 6, 5, 4, 4) + 14 = 66

DM Fang Dragon |

Fireball is a 20 ft spread, so while you can hit green and yellow you can't hit blue too (it's 35 ft away). See this for a visual guide.
The sun glinted off Ser Armithia's mirror polished armour and sword as he advanced, completely unfazed by the orcs. The smirk was wiped off the female orc's face and replaced by a concerned frown. She's demoralised for 3 rounds.
Ser I think you can move another 2 squares closer if you like, by my count you've only moved 20'.
Ishta took this as a signal to strike, she tossed a ball of intense blue white air towards the summoned hound which detonated with a bone shattering KRUMP! The area immediately around the detonation was converted to a winter wonderland with frozen shards of ice and a thick coating of frost!
Eratz the Black took the full brunt of the blast, his skin turned white and he groaned as he tottered a few steps before screaming as the frozen top layer of skin on his arms and legs shattered and fell off! He's surely not long for this world.

That rock can grant cover but I used a ruler to see and it seems you actually have line of sight (just) to Eratz the Black (green).
Eratz was only just visible between the bush and the bounder, and quick as a flash Azarra had a pair of arrows in the air. The first shattered his frozen left ear and the second his right, leaving what remained of his face a contorted mask of pain and rage!
Ishta uttered words of power and her form shifted and suddenly there where five Ishtas dancing around so quickly that nobody could be sure which was real and which was fake.
Battered by spell and and by arrows, Eratz the black stumbled before snarling "NO!" To Ser Armitha's disgust he snapped in a terribly disrespectful accent the elvish word to "Attack" his bow shimmered with a golden aura and started floating by his side, and as it began to sing an elven battle song it shot arrows at Ser Armithia!
The shorts where fast and dismayingly accurate, the first one narrowly missed the opening in his visor and the second one snuck into a gap between his vambraces creating a messy wound! The third arrow shattered on Ser Armithia's gorget.

Eratz swayed on his feet before snatching a potion from his bandolier and downing it one although he still looked in terrible condition as if a swift breeze would fell him.
Azarra so very nearly killed him, only orkish ferocity kept him going. Re action economy, he has the potion glutton feat (swift action potions) and worships a disgusting goddess.

If he is using rapid shot, all of those attacks should be at -2, and deadly aim is -1 to all attacks as well (or more, depending on BAB). Maybe you factored that in, but just wanted to mention it, as an archer, because I don't see it listed in your attacks.

I'm under the impression the +3 to hit from shocking grasp only applies while the charge is held so attack 2 & 3 did not benefit.
With a word of power, Kardas's blade becomes charged with lightnings and he invokes the wrath of Auril as he plunges it into the orc's abdomen! There was a flash and a ghastly pall of smoke rose from his hair, eyes nose and mouth along with a ragged wail. With blistering speed Kardas tried to follow up but his strike scraped harmlessly along the Orc's chainmail. His third strike snuck underneath the mail scoring deep into the orc's cauterised belly, eliciting another grunt of pain!
In the distance the orcess with the cloak kept up her lewd dance and started a song about how unwilling paladins where forced to father half orcs. As she did this, she took several potshots at Kardas. The first missed but the second shot slammed into the meet of his left shoulder where it sizzled as if it was glowing poker not an arrow!

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

I heard that fable already! Why not come closer, so I may end you!

Ishta's rage exploded with such force that little ragged bits of the berserker and the hound where found a hundred yards away, still smoking and charred. Kardas would have been burned to a crisp too but somehow Ishta contrived to prevent the flames from touching him, even so it was uncomfortably warm for him.

Azarra's bow thrummed as she lifted a trio of arrows at Eratz, the first lodged into his neck and he staggered back, the next slammed into his chest and her final one whizzed over his body as it hit the dirt!
The female orc made a beckoning gesture with her arm and the remaining orcs advanced in two groups, all of which seemed to be archers.

Still trailing a bit og goo on his golden boots, Ser Armithia inches a bit closer.

Ishta Khosiv |

"Sorry for leaving you without targets!" the Thayan half jokes, talking to Kardas.

As one the eastern trio of orcs downed the contents of a vial and their outlines started shifting and wavering!

The swordmage moves forward and barks out a challenge to the remaining orcs. "Auryl will have your souls! Come forth, and honor Her!" With that said, and hopefully their attention now being on him and not Ishta, Kardas casts one more spell and shifts into a white-furred goblinoid: a bugbear.

Karda's form ripples in a most nauseating way as his body melds into the monstrous shape of a bugbear!
The female orc laughed at Ser Armithia and blew him a kiss before withdrawing a fair distance to the west.

Ser Armithia begins kicking grass!

Still singing, Azarra takes one step to the side to get a better shot and fires off three rapid shots at Black.

The female orc retreats from Ser Armithia... only to be caught into the big lighting storm created by one of Ishta's spells!
Lightningball, DC 22 Ref save for half: 12d6 + 12 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 3, 2, 4, 3, 2, 2, 6, 5, 6) + 12 = 50
Should catch Blue and Yellow-dash in the area.

Ser Armithia-Seendren |

Ser Armithia watches as Ishta's magic engulfs the retreating cowardly orcs.
I really need to consider a career change!
